This review may be premature as we just ordered two custom made walnut beam mantels. So far service has been great and Joshua was very helpful in assisting us while making a decision on the type of wood that would work best for our fireplace project. We paid an additional $25 for 4 sample finishes so we can decide what finish we would like. From there they will stain the mantel accordingly and then it is ready for installation. I will update my review once the mantels have been completed. We were told it would take 7-8 weeks. read more

Short story: wood options here are plenty, but unless you want termites in a couple years, don't buy wood from here. Owners will not provide store credit for their termite infested wood. Long story here: We purchased a wood beam from this store and had it installed over our fireplace as a mantle in late 2019. About 1 month ago, we noticed a significant amount of termite poop and wood frass on and inside our fireplace, along with an active termite eating away at the mantle right before our eyes. We had no other active termite infestation in room nor elsewhere in the house. Six different termite/pest control companies inspect our home this past month and the mantle. I explained that the beam was reclaimed wood from this store and was fumigated/treated for pests before entering California to be sold, etc... Their shared opinion was that these drywood termites were localized to the beam and that it's extremely likely these termites infiltrated the beam while INSIDE THE SHOP. I wrote to TAG of the termit issue and provided pictures of the termites in mantle and providing information that we had taken extensive measures to prevent termites since we bought the house 8 years ago (house tented after purchase, remodeling, new windows, new roof, new exterior paint, replaced fascia boards, etc...). We had monthly house cleaners since 2020 who would vacuum and wipe down the fireplace and that is likely how these termites were able to flourish for 3.5 years without notice. This is what I also explained to TAG. TAG finally responded with, "Nope" and wouldn't provide even a partial store credit. We now have to throw away this [expensive] mantle and replace it with a new piece of wood (I'm definitely not purchasing repurposed wood again). Don't buy repurposed wood from here, you'll get termites. read more

Bought some of their California Coastal reclaimed planks for a wall in my room (around 100 square feet) from Ganahl lumber in Los Alamitos. $1000 bucks for a bunch of crap with holes and mostly unusable, I think they purposely sell their garbage to stores like a Ganahl lumber. Their display in store is not indicative of what your getting, customer service was useless when I emailed them and told me to go back to Ganahl lumber. So many choices of wood and they even have samples of wood with certain finishes (walnut finish etc) to choose from. The samples on the floor made it very easy for me to pick the particular wood for our fireplace mantle. Turnaround was about 6 weeks but I absolutely love our mantle! I would give 5 stars but I wish they had called me to follow up on the status of my order and slight delay by a few days. They've had their hands on many different pieces of my house including a fireplace mantle, accent walls, accent ceilings, cabinet installations, custom tables and shelves, a sliding barn door installation, even a wall demo. Tom and Angel and the entire team do an amazing job. It's rare that I'm able to use a contractor this consistently with zero issues but they deliver every time. Had high hopes. Visited this place and found they have amazing looking wood beams and appeared to do amazing work. We ordered a mantle and was provided a quote and timeframe. We waited for weeks and weeks which was understandable for handcrafted quality work. However, after waiting when we went for pick up the color was completely different than what we ordered. They attempt to corrected and then told us after several weeks the color was the best they could do and if we didn't like it they would just refund us. Nice offer I suppose but the whole experience was strange. We decided to live with the color and picked up the mantle. We waited to install it as we completed tile work. When we went to install we noticed the mounting bracket was a thin piece of wood that was splintered and cracking. There is now way the thing would hold weight and further this meant there would need to be holes on the top of the mantle that would remain visible through the nice finish. We thought there had to be a mistake. We called the company and they explained that the bracket should work and that we should use headless nails to hold it to the thin bracket. - We remain confused how the proposed approach would hold any weight. Not too mention having nail heads across the top of the mantle visible. Overall the experience in purchasing a mantle from here is more than disappointing. Prior to visiting this place we searched online and considered a lot of online options. We decided to stay local and spend money local. At this point we regret it. And, we should have accepted their offer of a refund when they offered it. Have called a local handy man to see what options we have and make use of the mantle. If the handyman solution does not work the mantle will become fire wood or trash. Such a bummer. read more

I ordered a door from them in May of 2022 through Doheny Builder Supply. Owner Tom, my door installer, and I decided on Tom's idea of a 2 1/8 thickness. The door arrived to Dohney 1 3/4 thick. I went over 2 days in a row, calmly and respectfully, to discuss what could be done to correct. The women in front wouldn't let me talk with owners Tom or John and on the second day they told me I need an appointment to see them. I left my number for my "appointment " and never heard back. I accepted the door delivery and it was 37 inches wide instead of 37.5. It was curved shaped like a banana. Even if you flipped it over. Impossible to install. I eventually got my money back. I can't speak for previous customers experience but based on mine do not expect any communication or after sale service and for goodness sakes don't have them make you a door. read more

Colin is a great dude and TAG was a great experience! Ran through different ideas for an accent fireplace wall in my home to keep with a rustic/modern feel. Considered doing used brick, but it was a bit labor intensive. Thankfully, I stumbled upon TAG. Walked in with no idea what to expect and Colin guided me into the right direction with wood panels for my wall. He has it down to a science; give him the square footage, colors and panel sizes you want and he'll mill out the right amount. Even though it's fool proof, for a most un-handy man like me, Colin will take the time and go over how to install with you! The store and Colin give off a down to earth, small town wood shop feel. All sorts of woods with various grains, textures, and colors from all over good ol' US of A. In fact, I picked me up a 2x7(ish) piece of reclaimed wood for my mantle too! Price was fairly reasonable, especially when you take the service and overall experience into account. This place is pretty rad with tons of wood from old mills and barns etc. from the 1900s even some going back to the late 1700 according to their signs. We grabbed the plank of wood from Montana from 1906, grain mill that looks fantastic for just $25. They had pieces of wood and hardware you could use to redo the mantle on your fireplace they said they even have done entire walls in customer's private homes and businesses. read more

Made my first trip to True American Grain today. I wish I would have known about this place sooner. My family and I walked in and were immediately greeted by a friendly employee and then by Colin. He told us about the show room so after looking at some very cool boards of super old barn wood, we made our way over there. OMGosh! They make some beautiful stuff! I was in heaven! I want everything in that showroom! Came back out to look through more wood and explained to Colin a few things we were hoping to do, he showed us some things and told us about the milling process and was super helpful. He even gave me some wood to practice on! I've read the reviews for other places, but this place had the best reviews and I can see why. Don't waste your time anywhere else! Holy Mollie. Our company is an established Outdoor Environmental Construction group for over 35 years in Laguna Niguel and surrounding area. Reclaimed lumber is quite the rage on some of our projects, especially with the Modern Farmhouse designs. But we recently bought 15 feet of 2x8 reclaimed boards and were charged $326.00 for the 2 boards. That's 300% higher than Austin Hardwoods charges for cleaner, straighter material. 300% more!!!! Gennie stated that they ship their lumber from the East Coast, but unfortunately her husband had already told me it was from Oregon. And it was Pine, not Oak. Beware of this place. Ganahl and Austin have 100% better material and are not at RIP off prices. One star to much... read more
