I'm so glad I finally tried True Confections. They had a large selection of cake slices and whole cakes available. My slice of White Savannah Cream Cake was amazing! It was so soft it was almost like pudding. The cake wasn't overly sweet, the whipped frosting was fresh, and the strawberry sauce tasted very vibrant. It was like a fancy strawberry shortcake. Although the slices aren't cheap, they are HUGE and totally worth it. I look forward to trying more! Nothing really remarkable about the cafe decoration, but it's kept clean and I thought the essential oil diffuser was a nice touch. The baristas were nice and helpful with questions. read more

True Confection or True Disconnection? As I recalled from memory lane, this used to be bumping and the place to be for good desserts and drinks, both locations were packed and lineups. Honestly, I even had one of my businesses sell some of the desserts back in the days. What happened?!? Fast forward it to nowadays, the service at the West Broadway location was horrible and the Denman location, extremely slow and barely passable when there was only 3 tables of customers. Plus some drinks were out or too late to make it when it's an hour before closing?? Anyways, here were the food that I was able to order; 1. Mixed berry cheesecake. It was okay, I remember it was better? And a bit bigger with the portion or am I wrong? 2. Chocolate caramel pecan pie. A little bit doughy on the under crust. 3. Orange soda. All the other drinks weren't available besides a soda, tea or water. Overall, I visited both locations and the services just weren't like before. The atmosphere was similar to wandering around an abandoned mall and the food just not it when compared to similar bakeries nearby. I guess just like many thriving businesses, got too comfortable with its success and didn't put in the effort to catch-up with time until it's too late. So this store opened its door in 1889 and its family owned. Its Gem of a place and has two locations. For sure denman street cafe is more chic and cosy compared to casual ambience of broadway one. Either ways the Café s are adorable. With no line up to wait, the moment we stepped in , we were sitting in the busy,wondrously aromatic restaurant. sorry sweet aromatherapy place. Lol I mean really, my eyes ogle out looking at the sweet n smelling all sweet in there. Good choices on thr menu. So u can pick a whole pound or two or more cake or a slice coupled with a drink. I have been buying cakes at True Confections for years. I would buy by the slice for myself or for a friends Birthday as they were always delicious and they presented well. The last few years I notice the customer service has truly been lacking and for 10.00 a slice? Not really worth it considering I'm not getting restaurant service, just buying the slice of cake. I live a block away from this location and I hadn't been there in a year but I thought I would buy a slice for my husbands Birthday this November. As usual when I came in the bakery I'm ignored by the people who work there, when I did get service the price of the cake was now $11.00. When I got home I noticed the slice was half the size it was before. Unbelievable! Bad service and a skimpy slice of cake that is not worth the price. Please people, save your money and go to Puebread a few blocks down Broadway. Excellent customer service and the pasteries are half the price and delicious. read more

While I'm not a huge fan of dessert normally, True Confections is a decent choice in this city. Parking is available in the strip mall parking lot (limited spots), as well as the side streets. The interior is dim and quiet. Great for conversation. It can get a bit full on the weekends though. The cake slices are quite tall, and can be too much for some. Sharing is recommended. Some of the flavours of cake can be a bit too sweet. Best to stick with some of the lighter choices if this is the case. Of the 3 I tried, only the chocolate hazelnut one was too sweet. The fresh fruit cheesecake and banana cream pie were just right. While I still personally prefer Cheesecake Etc., this place is still worth a visit. read more

I'm torn between giving this place 3 or 4 stars, so I'm rounding up. If you like cake (and, let's admit it, who doesn't????), this is a decent place to visit. They have a large selection of cakes baked on-site (while I was recently here, deciding on what cake slice to bring home, the door to the rear bakery area was open and I saw the bakers working at this massive floor-mounted batter mixer of sorts. Cool!). The selection of cakes in the display was noteworthy, and all of them looked amazing. Deciding on one was difficult. Unfortunately, the guy behind the counter was of little help to me. He was robotic in his mannerisms and barely looked at me at all (while I was at the display for a LONG time, too, trying to decide). He preferred to turn his back on me and work on cleaning the coffee machines and counters and he didn't talk to me at all. Even after I asked him for his recommendations, he simply said he prefers the strawberry shortcake but it's a personal preference, all are good, and he turned his back on me to continue his cleaning. (I was the only customer in the restaurant at the time). Two men were chatting behind the cash (I assumed they were the owners or managers) and they glanced at me at times but neither of them talked to me or offered any insights on the many cakes or any recommendations. I ended up getting a slice of "birthday cake": white cake with chocolate icing covered in colorful sprinkles, with sprinkles in the icing layer inside. Not exciting but basic. The size of the slice was generous, and I liked the cool box they boxed it up in. (One slice cost over $9, FYI. So....not cheap). Later that night, my kid and I shared the dessert. It was large enough for 4 portions. It was good, some might say very good, but yes, I've had better cakes. Ordered true confections from skip the dishes which delivered from the broadway location and I have NEVER had an experience like this from the downtown true confections -ever-. Downtown has higher standards but come on, this is not ok. We got two cakes, the banana one the icing had gone bad, literally. My mum has a cold and couldn't smell anything but she said it tasted really off and handed it to me and it literally smells like rotten milk, super nauseating!! The icing was literally crumbling off that's how rancid it was. The strawberry cake was insanely dry and the inner part that's supposed to be fresh with white cream and strawberry slices was a soggy mush like it had been in the display for a few days. I really like this place, I've ordered cakes from them before but I have never actually gotten just a slice from them before. On the Friday night I went there was only one person taking orders and cutting all the cakes for the people in takeout and in the restaurant, which meant that the service was a bit slow, disappointing but understandable. I got the chocolate raspberry cake and it was delicious, $9.50 is a bit expensive for one slice of cake, it was a sizeable piece but I'm not sure if it's worth it. We opened the box containing 2 slices of strawberry shortcake to find strange black powder on the bottom of the container and a hair! It will run you about $7.50-$7.95/piece and worth every freakin' bite!! It's a nice and heavy, New-York style of cheesecake, that isn't too sweet and is super creamy. Pieces are a good size. I have also tried their Hazelnut Chocolate Moose cake which isn't bad. It's light and fluffy with these dramatic shards of pure chocolate heaven dug into the cake. I found this cake a little lack luster, but decent. I feel it should be richer is flavour. True Confection also has a liquor license if you dine in. Coffee and teas as well. I love love love the white Savanah. Its to die for. I wad craving for sweets and had to ask my husband to drive from West 12th and Cambie to West Broadway and Alma. Not a short drive but well worth it. But dont you wish dessert places would offer something savoury in the menu? Maybe its just me but after eating something sweet I want something salty next. Maybe they should have garlic fries and chicken fingers lol! This particular location plays some really nice music. I had to wait for Zedd's Clarity to finish before taking off. I have to say nothing really changed much here in terms of decor compared to 7 years ago. Last time I was here I was with a group of friends and yesterday when I came again with a group of friends. The setting or atmosphere is great for small group meetup. He place is not loud. Desert wise it's not bad. We ordered three items and shared it. THe toffee pudding was really good. I ordered the terimisu and that was yummy. I got to try my friend cheese cake, it was very fresh. All desert were freshly made. Best part is that they are in my hood. Plenty of parking at night. It was my Father's birthday and he was visiting town, so I decided to splurge and get us some fancy cake. Three kinds appealed to him - so I said, let's get three slices! Really was a financial splurge for me, but it was a special occasion so I felt great about it...until we ate the cakes. Coconut: while the flavour of the custard between layers of cake was very nice and coconut-y, the cake was awfully dry (as if it had been there for a couple days) Diplomat: I was especially excited about this one, as I've had diplomat cake from elsewhere and loved it. This one was okay. The flavour - sweet. Not any particular flavour, just sweet. It was okay. But the pastry layer was not crisp (which is really essential for a good diplomat cake). Salted caramel: this was the best of the three. The cake was a tiny bit dry, but not as bad as the coconut. And the flavour was nice. All in all, I was really disappointed and felt like I'd been ripped off for my $26 for three slices of bad to mediocre cake. The desserts all look amazing. Portions are also huge - at least for the cakes. Cheesecake and pies are a bit more on the normal size. The cakes we have tried have all been okay. I wouldn't say they have been great but sometimes they have looked better than they taste. The cheesecakes I have tried have all been really good and what you would expect them to be. Pies have been hit and miss. If you sit in you do have to spend $10 a person which if you are just sharing a dessert, you will need to add something to drink to get you to your $10.00. This has been here for what seems like forever. In the case of my darling KTB, it's been here before she was even a zygote. They have busy days and average days and the cakes and servings are always very very large. For me, I am not the usual dessert type and will mostly frequent places like this for the coffee and conversation and may a fork of cake or pie. I can't give it a better rating than I would like because I find their cakes to be a bit on the dry side. Over the past ten years or so, I've gravitated to Asian style cakes which are smaller, dainty and presented like how a cake should. Pretty, delicate and delicious but not too sweet. True Confections seems like a throwback to my college days from the ummmmmmm 80's and 90's........omg. that's so long ago in terms of Millennial lifespans. For me, it's kinda nice to come back and try something....ummmm old school in terms of desserts. A good thing is they haven't changed much and consistency is always something I admired if the recipe for success is right. True to their backgrounds, this has got to be one of the longest running operations in town and for good reason. ....but for me, I'm old and have to watch my diet and waistline. As for the younger ones that like to come here who either drag me out screaming as I'm forced to tag along like an old sea hag and my only option is to sip my coffee while I glare at them enjoying their sinful confections with envy. I have to admit, this place gets some credit from me because I can trace good memories back to the early 90s here, before I was really into food. I discovered the Hazelnut Belgian Mousse. I always want to try something else, but can't tear myself away from this and end up ordering it. Get this item! I have, however, had the chance to sample other people's choices and I'd have to agree with another reviewer that said the cakes are their weakness, but cheesecakes, pies and trifles, are pretty good (though I don't recall the prices being this high - not worth it if you consider a high end restaurant's desserts sit around this price). This review, however, is for my most recent visit, with my 2013 finances and palette,.. and specific agenda,... My fiance and I noticed that they do wedding cakes,.. and specifically one we were thinking would be what we want to serve our guests: The Diplomat. Now perhaps I had high expectations because I knew if we went with this for the wedding, it would be $230... (though that is actually quite reasonable with a big wedding cake),.. but true to form,. the "cake" was unimpressive. I found it tasty, but nothing like other diplomats I've had (such as Notte's bakery). The icing had a bit of that oily taste that I associate with Safeway cakes (but still much better). The cake was nothing special, and the signature diplomat custard and pastry was only so so (and only one layer of the pastry) for a wedding cake,.. a fail. As I said, I still have a soft spot in my heart for this place. Maybe go every 2 or 3 winters on a dark night,.. but get the Hazelnut Mousse, or at least steer away from the cakes. read more

There are not many shops that serves mainly dessert with plenty of seating. This location is much better compared to the downtown location because the parking lot situation is better. The cream pies looked particularly scrumptious as the banana did. This rhubarb savannah pie looked pretty rich and had a lot going on. They certainly had a ton of variety with a wide assortment of pies and cakes to choose from. The traditional chocolate cake was beyond decadent. The pecan pie seemed like a solid alternative. OMG!!!! I'm from the States and we just don't have "Dessert Resturant's!!!!" So this place has home made amazing cakes, pies, coffee AND..... Cocktails! That's it!!!' All of my favorite things in one place! Cake, booze and coffee!!!A.K.A the best place on the planet earth!!! We asked the lovely lady what is their most requested cake. She recommended the chocolate devil cake with chocolate frosting. She was pleased to tell us we are getting the first slice from a freshly baked cake! I've been to the True Confections on Denman and this place feels a little bit less intimate. The portion sizes seem similar to their other location, from my experience. The two scoops of ice cream were quite small but reasonable for the price. Terrible. Just bloody terrible. What the Hell happened here? True Confections was once the crowning glory of desserts for me, and so damn good it was worth shelling out $8 for a slice of cake. Last time I was here the cakes were poorly decorated--the hazelnut cake had a huge smudge of missing icing on the side and the Savannah cake looked like a clumpy hot mess. In fact, it looked like the cake ate itself, vomited itself up, and then somehow managed to reassemble itself into what it thought a cake might look like... It looked like a can of chunky cat food that's just slipped out of the can in one giant, sweaty mass. It, it was terrible. TERRIBLE. I'll tell you honestly that this wasn't enough to deter me. I still bought two pieces of cake but god damnit if they weren't both awful. The Diplomat cake was dry and was cut so thin that the inner edge of the cake was missing a huge chunk. The cheesecake was ok, but resembled cheese a little TOO much in the sense that it had a plasticky rind on it like it had been left out to age for several months. Is this a fine aged cheese or a CHEESECAKE? Get your shit together, True Confections. FINALLY, as we are waiting to place our takeout order, a server stood in front of us having a conversation with a fellow coworker behind the counter. When we were finally noticed, he was rude. If your looking for the best desserts in town look no further, they have amazing cakes. Personal favourite is the White Savannah, soft fluffy a definite sharing plate. Now here comes the Negative this place is completely understaffed for a Saturday Night with one server handling the whole place. I did see 2 other people in the back and they count care any less about how busy it was upfront. I ordered 2 drinks and didn't get them till our dessert was done. Luckily I wasn't that thirsty. True connections can do a lot better than this with customer service and only for this reason alone I have to give it one star. read more
