We walked into this place--which is absolutely stunning, cute, and adorable--but sadly, the baked goods we tried didn't quite live up to the vibe. With so many options to choose from, I was easily razzle-dazzled by the confetti cookie with buttercream frosting (thanks to the website and Yelp photos), but honestly, it was nothing like the hype. My friend picked two cookies that she actually enjoyed--which is great! So maybe it was just me. But the ones she chose, IMO, weren't flavorful at all. One of them had peanut butter and sounded absolutely amazing, but it ended up being just as flavorless as the confetti cookie. We also tried a cookie with Craisins and something else inside... but that one just didn't hit the mark either. My friend said it was more like a breakfast bar, which wasn't really what I was going for. Everyone else seemed to be ordering cupcakes--so maybe that's what I should've gone for. I might come back to redeem myself, but honestly, with so many great bakeries in Vancouver, I'm not sure. That said--try it for yourself! Maybe your taste buds will be on point. First time ordering from here. I had family visiting from out of town and wanted to order a cake they requested something with pistachio. It was also my birthday. I ordered a 5" cake description "Chocolate cake base, pistachio flavoured buttercream icing, and encrusted with pistachios along the sides" it cost $51.61. When I picked it up, it was a cute cake. They had to correct the greeting. When I arrived home I noticed the cake had no pistachios on the side as per description just some sprinkled on top. It's still a cute cake but for the price. I contacted the bakery to ask them about it. The person working said she will forward the message to the manager, I was never contacted. The cake tasted ok, super sweet. The cafe itself was cute. Beautiful cafe on a quiet street with an assortment of baked treats, drinks and cakes. This can be a place to find a gift on the sweeter side or to catch up with a friend in a beautiful setting. I've been here a few times and it definitely caters to a sweeter tooth. They offer plenty of flavours to choose from for their cookies, cakes, cake pops, cupcakes and bars, but only 1 daily changing flavour of muffin and scone. There was no price tag on some items and I actually only realized the price of the scone ($5.95) after I got my receipt. The cupcake I got was not dry, and the butter cream was indulgent. read more

I got 2 cupcake as a treat for ourselves yesterday. They both had a tall stack of butter cream on top. The butter cream was thick, dense and rich with a hit of heavenly buttery saltiness. However, I was rather disappointed that the cake itself was quite dry and crumbly. I first visited Butter Baked Goods close to 15 years and it had since been my go-to bakery for cakes. The cakes were moist and the butter cream has always been devine. They were so good that when we returned to California 10 years ago, they had always been the benchmark for every bakery we patronized in the Bay Area. We moved back to VAncouver earlier this year. We eagerly returned this past late spring for a few cupcakes and other goodies to try out. They were as good as we remembered. However, the texture of the cupcakes we got yesterday was so off that I wondered if they should have gone to an end-of-day or a next-day $5 discount packs. Ok. Hmmm. I come in to your hoity-toity high falutin place with a few expectations. I guess I don't look worthy to visit your establishment because NO ONE and I mean NO ONE behind the counter greeted me. Even though there were three of you. It was more important for you all to share info with each other, and occasionally look over to stare at me, as if to hope that I would leave without service? Why? I'm dressed as nicely as your other patrons who arrived before, during and after my arrival. What is the reason for the cold shoulder? I walk around, trying to puzzle, should I sit down and wait for service? Do I order at the counter? Perform cartwheels for attention? Finally one of you decide that you can't ignore me any longer and decide to acknowledge my presence. Well, it's hard to not do so as the place, at the moment has only two other people present, and they are seated. I order breakfast. And a cookie. And the request to take the cookie to go is met with confusion. I can't figure out why, because later on... another woman comes in to order and takes away a box full of baked goods with no confusion. I also order coffee. A latte. It arrived to the table and scalded my tongue. It was hot, hot HOT. Irrationally hot. Ok. The saving grace is the breakfast was really nice. Simple oatmeal, with fruit and honey. And a dusting of sugar. The person who brought it out seemed to exude more humanity than the three behind the counter. I might return. Went there again to grab some Earl grey marshmallows (which were expensive but excellent) ... but the one star comes from the following interaction my friend had: My friend bought one of their bottled juices(?) and before we stepped out she noticed it had expired on Jan 6, 2022. The date we went was Feb 6, 2022, so an exact month had gone by. The girl went into the back to grab one that wasn't expired and come out empty handed and stated that all of their juices are expired and if she'd like the refund. So this isn't why I'm giving a 1 star rating... I'm giving a 1 star (frankly it should be zero) bc the girl had to ask someone for help to process the refund, which was fine, but I guess at that point my friend and I both see another employee checking the expiry date of some of the juices in their display with what seems to be the owner or manager. It's then that the owner/manager comes up to the till and says to my friend while showing the expiration date of the juice she had in her hand "this one is recently expired, do you want it for half off?". The expiration date was Feb 3, 2022! My friend was nice about it and just said "no thanks, I'll take a refund", but as soon as we left we both said "did she just offer to SELL you expired juice?!?". How stupid do you have to be to offer your customer "recently expired...at half off" as an apology for just selling her juice that expired A MONTH AGO! Wow. Just wow. Walmart and Superstore have a better policy for checking their shelves for expired product and a small store like this had been selling expired juice for a month and none of the staff noticed! read more

A friend was coming to my home for lunch and bringing lunch from Butter..dessert as well. Loved both the sandwich and the dessert, so decided to go to the store and purchase both again as a treat for myself a few days later. I have been there before and had a favourite desert, kinda a peanut butter marshmallow square, so decided to get that as well. My order came to just over $35 and I handed the girl at the register two 20s. She stared at the money and informed me that they 'don't accept cash'. I stared back at her in disbelief. As we were figuring out how I was going to pay, another server came up behind her to inform me that they only take EXACT CHANGE if they are to take cash, and that they hadn't taken cash as a form of payment for approximately 2 years. As I routed for exact change, my first server said, "Just give me $36." Huh? Finally someone found change for a 20 and I was 'cashed out' and told where to stand to wait for my sandwich and a small cup of soup. While waiting I spotted some amazing looking Cinnamon Rolls and would have liked to have bought 4 of them...however, the fiasco with not taking cash prevented them from getting a further sale. My sandwich was eventually brought to the counter by the second server I had originally encountered, placed on the counter (behind other stuff on the counter) and she took a phone call as I waited to be told that was for me (the food, not the call). After she got off the phone I asked her if that was for me and she said "Oh yes" as though serving me was an afterthought. (It was.) As I was leaving I mentioned that I would have like to buy the cinnamon rolls, but because they didn't take cash I would have to do without...and because of the policy I probably wouldn't be back. She offered up the F U line 'Have a great rest of your day!' as I departed. More importantly, their $16. sandwich can be bested by a $12. sandwich half a block away at Tracy's in Windsor Meats. Wander over and bring your cash. As I finish writing this I recall that just yesterday AND today, during two of the busiest shopping days of the year at Christmas, there was a huge failure of credit card processing machines (MONERIS) and MOST of the stores in Vancouver closed for the rest of the day because they couldn't process sales. People in Kerrisdale were irate! Of course the stores (including London Drugs) LOST the TOTAL profit of TWO of the BUSIEST days that would have helped their year end. We stopped in to Butter Baked Goods Bakery and Café (based on a friend's recommendation) for Friday afternoon treats. And we were not disappointed. This is a lovely shoppe - as pretty as it is delicious. We enjoyed some walnut brownie piece samples that they set out. There was so much to choose from, it was hard to decide. Ultimately we went with the S'mores bar and the Bajillionaire bar. Butter, sugar, chocolate; incredible. We were only there to choose desserts and leave. We found the counter staff to be pleasant and helpful. Butter will be on our list again the next time we are in Vancouver. read more

We tried their sunday high tea service at $30 per person. It includes 6 sandwiches, 4 scones, 7 sweets and unlimited pots of tea. We couldn't finish everything and had to pack most of the sweets to go. Their cookies are the best and their bars are best sellers as well (just too sweet for me). Sweets could do with a bit more variety. Their website advertised a lemon loaf as part of the high tea but we didn't receive that. Interior is really cute but it is slightly cramped so if you want more room, this may not be the place for you but for the price it is a lower-end high tea option. I've been wanting to go to this place for long time since but was not able to visit due to the location. I finally tried out today!! It's a lovely small little cafe. The space is small but decoration is very cute I ordered butter cookie and donut muffin. The butter cookie has the right amount of sweetness... not to sweet and i like it! The donut muffin is amazing... definitely taste better than normal muffin. It probably means more calories but good food has high calories :) The service is also great too. I had their baked goods often but for the first time I had sandwich. So delish! I was confused how to order. I mean at table? Or in front menu board? Or at cashier? Drink menu was at cashier but food menu was on the other wall. It's not so convenient :( Anyway I had proschute, brie cheese, pear and walnut sandwich in hard crunchy baguette. Butter is always a favourite for dessert treats and hot drinks! I recently came here to try out their hot chocolate for hot chocolate festival. They had two to choose from: London Fog Afternoon and the Bajillionaire. I tried the Bajillionaire, which is a Carmel dark hot chocolate served with a Carmel dipped chocolate cookie. 3.5 stars We came here for an afternoon tea at 2:15pm on Sunday. We called a week in advance to reserve a table for four people. We checked on the menu on their website. It looked good and the price was reasonable. We gave it a try. When we were seated at the restaurant, a menu was right in front of us. The menu showed 6 blended tea and 3 afternoon tea sets that we could choose form. The 3 afternoon tea sets were: Traditional Afternoon Tea at Butter $30 per person Butter's Demilune Afternoon Tea $18 per person Children's Afternoon Tea $22 per person Obviously we wouldn't order the children's afternoon tea. We told the server that each of us would like to order the Butter's Demilune Afternoon Tea, because we ate brunch earlier in the morning and we felt we would be very full if we ordered the Traditional Afternoon Tea (a full set of savoury and sweet food). Unfortunately, the server said we did not order the Demilune Afternoon Tea on phone when we reserved a table. The server who took our call also did not mention anything about the food or menu. We felt it was a ripe off because the website did not list the Demilune Afternoon Tea. All of us did not know that we must preorder what we wanted on phone. If we did NOT mention what we wanted on phone, it was a DEFAULT that the traditional afternoon tea would be ordered for everybody. This is very misleading!!! We were kind of pissed, but since we had already decided to come and try the high tea here, we had to go with the Traditional Afternoon Tea. We highly recommend their website should list what their high tea is included, so at least people know that they have options and they should specify on phone about what they would like to eat when they call in to reserve a table. We would be much appreciated if the server told us clearly on phone. We tried the savoury and sweet food. All of them were just okay or average. We did not have a "wow" impression on the food. We actually liked the high tea at Truffles Fine Goods in Van Dusen Garden. Their sandwiches and pastries were great and their price was cheaper than Butter Baked Goods. We also felt it was much more comfortable sitting at Truffles Fine Goods. They had tables inside and outside the restaurant. More spacious. Where we were seated here was next to the counter or a bar table. People or servers walked behind us very frequently that two of us were very uncomfortable that we had to be aware of someone or people who walked behind all the time. Having high tea on a weekend should be enjoyable, but obviously this one was not. However, all the servers here were friendly and took care of all customers. If we would like to have high tea again, we would not come back here most likely as there are good ones out there. read more

My sister, mum and I came here for brunch but didn't realize it didn't really exist! They do have the most amazing baked goods though and the scones are light, flakey and as their name says, 'buttery'! They do serve lunch around 11:30 am ish onwards and the daily specials pop up as the creative chefs in the back kitchen dream them up. Since we arrived quite early we decided to do some shopping then head elsewhere for lunch. The decor is cozy, bright country chic and the assorted day old cookies are delish! I bought a couple of those and my boys said they're the best! They also make fresh marshmallows which are very tasty and addictive! Next time I'm plugging in a whole fruit pie and more cookies and a few other tasty cakes and treats. They serve high tea on Sundays and you must reserve. It's unfortunate when a successful business is sold and under new ownership the tried and tested recipes change. I have been a long standing customer of the original Butter under the ownership of Rosie Daykin from the early days of the bakery on Dunbar Street. My first time back to the bakery since the ownership change and was sadly disappointed. The famous "Oreo" cookie was lacking icing, the Hello Dolly bar was dry with something missing and their loaf cakes were significantly smaller and unappetizing in appearance. Could this be an odd bake or possibly a change in staff? Please bring back the original recipes and quality that made the original Butter a success. read more

Came here for Hot Chocolate Fest - cute little bakery, and by little, I don't mean quaint, I mean it is CRAMPED in there, and there is little seating available. On the one side of the bakery, you have a row of tables, and a display case. There isn't enough space for the servers to go around you as you look at the cakes in the display case. I was kind of annoyed that most of the tables seemed to only seat 2, and we came as a quartet.. including the big table where two grumpy old ladies were holding court, surrounded by empty chairs. But whatever, we came for a sugar high and we weren't going to let some table hogs ruin our mood, so we stole a couple of chairs from the grumps sitting next to us and crowded around the small table. Our hot chocolates arrived fairly quickly and looked very much Instagram-worthy. Taste-wise however, we found it pretty watered-down and bland. The birthday cake hot chocolate was too sweet, declared a friend. I personally thought that if you mixed all the toppings together, it helped mellow out the sweetness. We ordered a few food items - the lemon meringue tart was recommended by a coworker and was DIVINE. One of the best lemon meringue tarts I've had, in my opinion, although it's a little hard justifying the cost of $5 for a tart no bigger than the palm of my hand. Not too tart, nor too sweet, and, as Goldilocks once said, it was just right. Next was some sort of chocolate coconut square that we all found to be too rich and sweet; only good in small nibbles. The cheese quiche was very good - light and fluffy with a buttery, flaky pastry shell. The accompanying salad was disappointing - it looked like just greens straight out of a bag, and nothing to go with it other than sparsely applied vinaigrette. We bought a bunch of marshmallows to go ($8 for a bag, $2.50 for one of the daily cuts). They have a bunch of cool flavors like birthday cake, violet, and maple. Two thumbs up for the birthday cake marshmallows - omg, it's like eating a slice of cake, but in marshmallow form. That must mean it's less calories, right? At least that's what I told myself today when I had 2. They sell a variety of items here, suited for any sweet tooth - cakes, cupcakes, loaves, squares, cinnamon buns, and cookies. I didn't mind the service, although my friends complained about one of the cashiers being unfriendly. wedding planning discussions with p, m and c. m is a bridesmaid whereas c is on the same boat as me - we're helping out :) the minute you walked into the cafe, everything's very pastel and floral-y. def a place that's good for instagram. there is street parking for 2hrs for free and it was pretty easy to find a spot so. the cafe itself is pretty small, hence why they only do high/afternoon tea on sundays and 2 seating times. you def have to book for the afternoon tea. there are cute signs that says reserved for the books that are for the tea so it makes you feel quite special. as for the tea itself, unlike other places, there isn't a large tea selection. plus the descriptions were really...explanatory; as in, they don't really tell you much abt the tea itself and tbh, it leaves you half-confused. i got the kabuko's sencha, which is basically a mix btwn normal sencha and genmaicha as i got a hint of the roasted rice flavour in my tea. m and p got the sunset sencha, which has a hint of citrus; c got the cream of earl grey. service was decent as they did come around once asking if we wanted more hot water, honey, milk/cream etc. for $35/person, the amt of food that you get at the tier is a good deal. you get 4 diff sandwiches, 2 diff scones and a 4 diff types of desserts. for our tier today, we had the cucumber, the egg salad, the tuna crunch (basically tuna salad with potato chips for the crunch), ham&cheese and the waldrof. i have to say out of the 4 - i liked the cucumber and the waldrof the most. the waldrof was in a croissant and it was delishhh. the cucumber was very light and refreshing. the brioche that the tuna crunch was in was too dense and dry for my liking. i only had the raisin scone because by the time you finish all the sandwiches, you're in a carb coma. the devonshire cream and raspberry jam was very nice. as for the desserts, there were 2 diff types of bars, 2 diff types of cookies, a macaron and a lemon meringue tart. i nibbled on the shortbread cookie, which was very good and it wasn't too dense/heavy. the lemon meringue was...quite the palate cleanser as the lemon was very tangy. basically we all packed whatever was leftover home lol. they were very nice to also pack the cream and jam for you, if you ask for it. they also helped us take a group pic when the tiers and teas were all sitting nicely on the table. overall, a solid afternoon tea - only downfall is the space of the cafe and the limited selection of tea. also, the paying part was a bit cramped as you have to pay at the cashier because their card machine is a desk unit not a detachable one. read more

* Girly * The decor is girly with flowered wallpaper, and lots of green and pink tones reminiscent of Limoges porcelain (although they don't seem to use any porcelain at all). The selection of treats was girly with a wide selection of fancy cupcakes, marshmallows, cute cookies, and the like. I detected a few girly giggles from the semi-open kitchen as the staff seemed to enjoy their work. The jumbo housemade "oreo" didn't really look like an oreo, was a bit less sweet (thankfully) than a typical oreo, and was filled with a higher quality buttercream than a typical oreo. Attended an event where the treats provided were bars from Butter and I must say, they are a scrumptious, indulgent and buttery delight! I tried out a few including the lemon bar, the butter tart bar, nanaimo bar, the dream bar and the dunbar. I found that they were all quite sweet and very filling but hey, the name of this place is butter! My favourite was the dunbar with a crumb topping and oatmeal base with chocolate chips, pecans and dulce de lece in the middle. The crumb topping and base were my favourite as i found the dulce de lece too sweet. The nanaimo bar base was also very good but again, the custard middle was too sweet. Similar findings with all of the fillings, there is just too much sugar but their shortbread, oatmeal and chocolate bases are all wonderful! I totally adore the goodies from Butter on Dunbar, so imagine my thrill today when I walked by the new building on the corner of 33rd & Mackenzie today and saw ... another Butter! Bigger! Better! It has a cafe! I felt astounded and delighted and hungry, all at the same time. In a genuine improvement over the tiny storefront on Dunbar, this new location serves coffee (La Marzocco machine), and has tables (6 darling marble-topped) for sitting and relaxing while enjoying a small piece of heaven. According to the (friendly and efficient) staff, they just opened two weeks ago. This location is open Tues to Sat, 8am to 5:30pm, and promises to become a neighborhood gathering-place in no time flat; I stopped by around 4pm and there were several people lined up for take-away yummies, and several tables were also occupied. The ambiance is completely fantastic: everything you love about Butter, but with more space. It's a light and airy, open-concept design, with even a couple of windows into the kitchen to watch the bakers. Sadly, I was there long after baker's hours, but a morning visit would most likely be more entertaining in that respect. The colour scheme is still the signature cozy, country-style green, pink & white, with darling display stands showing off the delectable wares, just like the flagship operation. The tables are completely adorable (I think I mentioned that already, but it bears repeating because ... it means that you can sit down and enjoy your treats in-house!), and there is a welcoming (painted cast-iron) doggie keeping watch over the cream & sugar table. I didn't have time to get a coffee today, but the La Marzocco machine promises goodness on that front as well. I did get a Coney Island bar to snarf on the way home, and it was a dream of homemade marshmallow-ness covering decadent nut-studded chocolate all based on a crumbly, buttery-tasting chocolate crust. The middle layer was perhaps a tad stiff for the softer base and topping, but that did not interfere with the scrumptious taste at all. Yum! This review is based on the High Tea alone. I've been a fan of Butter for the last 10+ years when it first came on the scene. Perfect cakes and buttercream icing, beautifully decorated and always a hit with everyone. I'd give them 5* on their cakes and cupcakes (ok and maybe their dream bar and chocolate sandwich cookie). I love High tea, its nostalgic for me being from the UK. I've tried almost all the places in Vancouver that offer them. Because of my love of Butter Baked Goods over the years a dear friend of mine offered to take me for my birthday. Its a very pretty, quaint, although very cramped setting but we were pretty disappointed with the tier of food and a couple of annoying service actions :( Even though the portion was plenty and I think good value for $ (we left very full), some of the sandwiches were quite bland and boring, they provide whipped cream for the scones instead of the standard devonshire cream, which is a must for High Tea and the macarons tasted boxed and like they'd been frozen...there were other disappointments but you get the point. Lastly, we had a reservation for 12-2 with another booking coming in for 2pm. At 1:15, a server came around to place a 'reserved' sign on all the tables for the 2pm booking, 45 minutes before we were to leave! But then told us 'no rush' ....every table beside us shared the opinion that it was in really bad taste. I'll continue to get my cakes from Butter, as they are consistently fantastic but for High Tea, I'll stick to the one place in Vancouver that in my experience, never disappoints! read more

The service here is EXCELLENT! Such a cute, fancy place for tea . I went here for a friends birthday which was such a great experience. I would highly recommend this place to anyone! The decor and the food was great. The only downfall was that there was no air conditioning; and on a hot day it matters (but I get it, it's Vancouver)! I love love love the decor of this place! This place is my happy place and even though I've had a few disappointments, I can't help but still give them 5 stars. My absolute favourite bakery. I was actually first introduced to this bakery by their beautiful cookbook. The first thing I tried here was their famous "Oreo" sandwich cookies. Didn't disappoint! Soft and rich - they are huge too, hard to finish! I also ended up baking them myself from their cookbook and they turned out the same. Super happy about that! I tried their peanut butter sandwich cookies and now I'm addicted to those. They were so soft with the right amount of sweetness. Every time I'm here I debate either of those sandwich cookies. I've had a couple of their bars and they are great, the millionaire, their newest pink marshmallow chocolate bar with coconut (so good)! I want to try their salads here as they looked like they had a delicious peach and goat cheese one this summer. They also have a selection of small bags of candy here too and some cute cards too. I also saw some ladies having high tea here and it looked amazing! I've had two disappointments. A box of macarons - the macarons were cracked and very dry. Possibly of the worst macarons I've had in Vancouver. My first attempt at macarons were better than these. I haven't tried them since, though I have a feeling that was a horrible batch. If I didn't live so far away, I would've tried to get a refund. I didn't like their sprinkle cookie sandwich either - I wasn't expecting it to be dry and crumbly and the buttercream was way too sweet (and I've never said that about anything before). Pretty sure it was sweeter than the buttercream in their recipe books which I make all the time. I also wish they would update their social media streams with photos of treats that are actually currently in stock in the bakery, rather than pretty professional photos. I've had some disappointments and never got to try their campfire bar this summer, despite two trips out to their location which is a bit out of the way! The interior is the prettiest I have ever seen for a bakery. I have to hold back from walking around instagramming everything. Sometimes it can be hard to find a place to sit. I like that there is some seating outside and it's in a relatively quiet neighborhood. I can hardly imagine how busy it would be in a more popular area! I'm pretty excited they recently changed to be open on Mondays as well - 7 days a week now! Review of the Marshmallows only: So, Christmas morning is always a total sugar-fest since there are lots of sweet things in my stocking, and this year I found 4 bags of Butter's marshmallows. I LOVE marshmallows, whether they are plain, in something, on top of something, under something.... you get the idea, and had never see these before, so I was excited to try them. The first two flavors I have tried are just "OK". The gingerbread, oddly enough, doesn't really have a flavor. They are nice and squishy, but no real flavor. Weird. The mint are fine, I might just plop one in some nice cocoa. Probably expected much more from these considering the price (Santa accidentally left the price on)... $9 a bag in the US, and I looked at their website and it looks like $7 a bag there. I wish Santa had found the toasted coconut as I would have liked to try those. read more

Went there today and there was a line up out the door (Mother's Day). Place looked well run and definitely had a small family business feel to it. We tried the famous "Oreo" cookie, Kitchen sink cookie and a eclair. You can definitely taste the high quality ingredients that went into these products, however, I thought that execution was lacking, especially at this price point. The Oreo cookie was great, but the kitchen sink cookie lack components considering it should have everything including the kitchen sink. The eclair was not stuffed completely as it was only half full of pastry cream and the other half full of air. Overall, solid neighbourhood bakery / cafe. read more

What a lovely place! Details to the decor transport you to another world. Wonderful selection of baked goods, where do you start? There were samples at the counter, bonus! Bags of day old baked goods at the counter, $5 for 4 muffins, can't beat that! The fresh lemon blueberry muffin was perfect! Texture was amazing. Chocolate cherry scones were nice, great to pair two delicious ingredients together. Yogurt granola was healthy and filling. Small seating area. Only about half a dozen tables for two and a couple of larger tables on the side. The place looks large, but it's mostly counter space for displaying baked goods. Beautiful single restroom. Order and pay at counter. Staff need a class on service, no smile or greeting. Corner location, lots of free street parking. read more
