Ouch! It really pains me to write a 1 star review, but often, it's a necessary reality check. I've been coming here for many years. Unfortunately, the quality of their desserts and service has declined over the years. The desserts are overpriced, the portions are small, and the service is appalling. For a place that charges over $8 for a slice of cake, people expect more. We went here for a friend's birthday party, and I was shocked at the level of service that we received. I slipped my credit card to one of the servers and gave him instructions to charge the bill on my card at the end of the meal - a common request. For whatever reason, the server approached our table while we were STILL eating and asked that I go to the cashier at that very moment to pay for the meal. We weren't even done our meal! So embarrassing. And it gets worse! I emailed the management about the situation.Instead of an apology, I received a forwarded email from the server with a list of excuses and blatant half-truths about what happened. So I followed up with the management to give them a second opportunity to rectify the problem, but I have received no reply to date. Why the indifferent attitude? Frankly, it just annoys me that restaurant management in today's age believe that they can brush off an unhappy customer. Given the proliferation of social media and review sites like Yelp, it's a plain no-no. You just end up just shooting yourself in the foot. Given its high prices, mediocre desserts and indifferent attitude to customer service, I wouldn't bother coming here again. While driving through the West End on Sunday Night at 10PM, we noticed that True Confections was open -- this made me super happy because that meant I was able to avoid having a McFlurry for dessert. True Confection's service hours is their biggest asset -- it seems like there is no other competition for a sweet bite, cocktail, or coffee on a Sunday night. I ordered their Triple Chocolate Mouse cake, which the table next to us excitedly referred to as the "Tuxedo Cake." For $8, I felt it was okay, a bit pricy for the small sliver of cake. I came here for a little dessert bite after being at the Wolf & Hound (just up the street) with friends. Having lived around here since I was 13, True Confections has been around since I've been in Vancouver. They have slightly revamped their decor so that the prices of the desserts is not reflected except on the menu or in front of each dessert - they used to have all the prices listed on their chalkboard above the plating area, which they erased to put up special hot chocolate prices. I know their hot chocolates are not going to be anywhere near as good as Cocoa Nymph (having had them before in their Denman location, where they were watery and powdery), but I wanted to see if their desserts would be good. So I ordered a slice of tiramisu at $7.95 for takeout. What a disappointment. At $8, I would expect for takeout a large slice of cake, which True Confections is originally known for. This thing is the slice of a brownie and is actually smaller than most orders of tiramisu I've had in places, including at Don Francesco and the like. Also, the quality on the dessert is poor. The cream has a weird artificially sweet taste to it, like it has been over-sugared. The chocolate is dry and slightly grainy - unlike Cocoa Nymph again (which is also, coincidentally, cheaper for a whole chocolate bar), the quality of the chocolate is inferior and has that store-bought chocolate taste. Finally, mascarpone and kahlua are only evident in fleeting sensations. In a way, it was like having a cake that had incidental sprinkles of kahlua and occasional dabs of Kahlua. The cake itself was a bit dry and not perfectly moist, and since it was cake, it's not true tiramisu since those demand lady finger biscuits. If you want a dessert you can take out in this area, go to Baru. Go to La Ghianda or Aphrodite. Heck, even go to Rajio, because tofu pudding is going to most likely be steps above what this place advertises. And all are comparable in price, perhaps even cheaper (I know Rajio's at $2 would be). I am not going to recommend this place to people anymore since I know there are so many better alternatives, whilst this place has stagnated and rested on its former laurels. I remember days when I loved their cakes and when they were reasonably priced; now, they are more expensive to reflect supply, but the quality has also diminished. It's 11:30PM on a Friday. The last time I went to True Confections, it was a few years ago and my stomach didn't feel good for two days. Last night I went again with a friend and we shared two of their cakes, the Dark Chocolate Mousse Cake and some other cake. Again, the cakes were just ok, nothing great, not worth the money or the time to go there. True Confections reminds me of a sad superhero story. You see this kid with tons of potential and solid foundations ending up wasting their talents on holding traffic signs instead of saving the world. Sure, a cake spot might not have saved the world anyway, but this place could've been one of the hottest spots in Vancouver. Their cake recipes are irresistible. Case in point: hazelnut mousse cake. I have it every year for my celebration of birth because it represents everything I want out of my next year: DECADENCE. (Lol my aspirations are a little more virtuous than that but still.) Their caramel cheesecake? You can only inhale it. But the service is a big whomp whomp whomp. Getting a few slices of cake cut is drawn out for a stupidly long amount of time, and the servers generally fail to engage the tables in any sort of conversation at all. Last time when I asked for the rest of the cake to go (because, decadence) it was just wrapped hastily in parchment paper, so it looked like a delicate turd, and thrown into a brown bag. The environment also feels super dated and feels dreary rather than intimate. Some new trendy IKEA furniture (this place doesn't strike me as the kind to drop any money on atmosphere anyway) and some colours other than black and mauve should do the trick. This place tops all the other dessert places' trophy case of cakes. The cakes are all sooooo pretty!! But did they taste as good as they looked? Definitely! The mud pie a la mode is what every chocolate brownie/cake should be like -- moist and completely chocolatey! (None of that cake mix nonsense) Service wasn't as good as I would expect for a place like this -- For at least 4 employees (that I could see) working in the small space of no more than 10 tables, service was slow, and at times, hard to come by. But back to the selection, cakes, cheesecakes, pies and ice cream oh my! I wanted to try more cakes, but after my humongous slice of Boston cream pie I was stuffed. Despite the luring light reflecting off of the Devil's Food cake in the display case, I had to pry myself away from the place before I order another slice and die because of a heart attack. There's nothing too extravagant about the pastries and drinks at True Confections. They are arguably overpriced with flavours passable as average. Nevertheless, I make a 25 minute trip out to Alma every once in a while when I desire/crave late night dessert. The best attribute about True Confections is that they open late - a bonus for a city that is notorious for sleeping early. They also offer a selection of alcohol infused coffee beverages if you ever choose to wet your whistle. It's a great place for dates, but, just to reiterate, it's nothing special. So I was looking to find some dessert that could be delivered to my home as my guests felt like having something sweet. I looked up delivery options and found True Confections on the Foodora website. I assumed that I assumed that the pieces would be substantial from the pricing on the website. We were looking forward to dessert. When that delivery person brought our desserts, the bag seems small. I opened it up and there were two boxes in the bag which was weird because we ordered for desserts. As we open the two takeout containers True Confections had stuffed all four deserts into two small takeout containers. The more fragile desserts with the whipped cream were destroyed. I assumed at almost $10 for one piece of pie, the least that they could have done was package it properly for delivery so it didn't look like somebody had vomited into the container. True Confections - I want to swan dive into your cheesecake. There was a good three year episode in my life that I gave the fresh fruit cheesecake to anyone and everyone celebrating a special occasion - birthdays, babies, promotions, bad Tuesdays - I was the cheesecake Queen. Hint: when you gift a cheesecake, you often get to EAT said cheesecake. Since then, i've panic called this little Kits location 48 hours before my mother's 50th birthday party begging for a 50 person, True Confections sized lemon heaven cake within 24 hours... and they delivered. High fives to you TC - you saved my butt! So why the three star? Well - take out: 5 star all around. Heck, five star and a shimmy hug for good measure! But my dine in experience hasn't been as spectacular. The last time I was in, our server was very laissez-faire, didn't pay us much mind and we left with a bit of a sour taste in our mouths. Advertised gluten free cake options which is the only reason I visited. When I visited the cafe, I found out that absolutely none of their cakes are gluten free - even though it was on the signage with the cakes. I was told the "top half of the cake is gluten free, but not the crust." ‍ For someone with an allergy, it's really frustrating when businesses don't understand how sick a person can get from gluten contamination. Maybe I'm accustomed to cheap eats but True Confections don't float my boat and I am sweet-tooth Queen! When others squint their eyes and comment on the sweetness, I sketchily look around and agree when secretly I want to take the dessert home and eat it all! Which is what I did the first time I came to True Confections several years back. And guess what? I went into a sugar coma! Yep, bypassed the sugar high and went straight into crash-mode. The first time I went here with a friend, we had amazing service, our server was outgoing, and willing to go the extra distance to make everything enjoyable. However when we came back a couple months later, the server we got was completely opposite, she was rude to my friend and charged her for the whole meal even though we split the bill. My friend wanted to discuss this issue with the manager but as it turned out, our grumpy server was the manager. True Confections is the place I like to go to when I'm in Vancouver and in need of a sugar hit at 11pm, or maybe just a place to sit and chat and enjoy some warm drinks with a special someone. Their cheesecake is of the dense, rich variety; I tried the mandarin orange version that is on special right now for the holidays and it was tangy and decadent at the same time. Their chocolate hazelnut cake is also sinfully rich. Girlies, you know how like maybe 52 weeks out of the year you are probably craving sugar and chocolate and carbs like crazy? Come here. All the chocolateness that your hormones are crying for is neatly packaged in tall slices of cake and pie. I wish I had a slice magically appear in front of me every time I have a craving for it. To go with my Choco Banana Cream Pie, I had the Polar Bear Express Hot Chocolate, which had peppermint Schnapps in it. It was sooooo good! Made me feel all warm and tingly inside. Wanting a late night snack late one warm night, my girlfriend and I decided to walk down to True Confections as it is one of the few late night food places that isn't serving pizza or beer around midnight. A pretty good place for just desserts. The cakes are of the massive diner variety, usually exceeding 5 layers. That means one slice is plenty for two people in most situations despite being sort of slender. The exotic and well crafted cakes keep me coming back. Some of their options rival what most people are capable of baking at home, so it's definately viable when time and inclination are an issue. I like coming here for take-out, but the beverage menu amost succeeds in enticing me to stay every time. The pies appear to be a lot closer to regular sized than the cake and are mostly seasonal. From my experience, their cakes are really hit or miss, no in between... I went there once about a year ago and I was extremely disappointed! Chocolate Mousse Cake was huge, and full of sugar! It's a good place for cake. They have a good amount of varieties. However, at this location the service is bad. They close at 12 at night. If you go there after 11:30, they would constantly remind you that they are closing soon. I was reminded for 4 times in 15 mins which was very annoying. Plus, you have to spend 10 dollar for each person in your party, so I couldn't just share one dessert with my bf. Well their service was rude but I still like their cake, such as coconut cake. I ordered the cake to go very recently. When I opened the box, that piece of white chocolate raspberry cheesecake was like a joke. It was so tiny. If you are serious about dessert, then you must check this place out. This place is my go-to destination for cakes and desserts in Vancouver. Yeah, it's a bit pricey. Yeah, the servings are huge. But the selection of cakes, pies and cheesecakes are soooo worth coming back for again and again. The warmed chocolate pecan pie is one of my favourites, so is the seasonal strawberry shortcake and turtle cheesecake... delicious! Perhaps since I go back and forth between Vancouver and Toronto, I truly appreciate sit-down cafes that just focus on desserts as a great thing (Toronto has few excellent, affordable dessert cafes). This is a nice place to go to with friends after a *light* dinner, or on a rainy afternoon with good company, or for grabbing a few take-out desserts to take home to a dinner party. I've been to three of their locations - West End, Point Grey and West Van - but I've been to Point Grey just recently so I'm including my review for this location. In my years of dessert experience, all desserts and the dining experience have been consistently good. (You may have to wait quite a while at the West End location on a busy night). The only reason why I'm giving it 4 and not 5 stars is because you really need to have some extra room to finish a serving so we typically plan ahead, or share a dessert between two people. My friends and I have always talked about just going out and having cheesecake while we catch up. We've always wanted to go to Cheesecake Etc, but after passing by the place we decided it wasn't really the place we wanted to be. So my friend suggested True Confections; it was probably one of the best last minute, late night, impulse decisions we've ever made. True Confections is a tiny, cafe-like establishment that serves desserts and is open late. I've never actually gotten a table there because we always grab it to go, but from how we were greeted by the staff, I'd say I could definitely see myself sitting down and ordering myself some treats. They are very friendly, accommodating, and are knowledgeable in whatever question you have about their desserts. As I've mentioned in my previous reviews, I'm unable to consume chocolate (fml) but from the desserts I've had, I was quite happy. Their banana cream pie is one of my favorites. The fresh bananas are wonderful and the filling is so tasty. I can't have enough of this. I also love their blueberry and strawberry cheesecake. It's dense and rich in a way cheesecakes should be. From friends' reviews, the chocolate banana cream pie was delicious and the whipped cream was a great addition to it. The chocolate caramel cheesecake was a bit heavy, but tasty nonetheless. After introducing this to my family, this has been a favorite whenever there's an occasion. My family loves it, especially my mom who has a sweet tooth (I'm sure I got my sweet tooth from her). The classic chocolate cake is my family's favorite. The chocolate cake is moist and fluffy. Overall, recommended for any chocolate lovers out there. They also tried the chocolate mudcake; this was a bit of a disappointment for my brother. He said it was dry and the staff recommended that he should heat it up and eat it with ice cream. He said they said this makes the cake moist and adds flavor. I don't buy this at all; cakes shouldn't rely on ice cream to make it delicious. These cakes should be able to stand up and be tasty on their own. The fact that it needs ice cream for it to be moist is a sign of inferior production. I love this place but my biggest issue is the price. It is WAY over priced for a slice of cake. Sure it's delicious but paying nearly $30+ for 4 slices of cake is just absurd. This is why I'd only go here if there was a special occasion. $7 (average) for a slice of cake? Unfathomable. Parking is also an issue. The parking lot is small, so you'd have to find street parking if you're one of the unlucky ones who can't park there. Would I go back there? Possibly once every 2 or 3 months, when there's a big event and people are craving cakes (and we're in the vicinity of course). $7 is just too much for a slice of cake. A desert den of delight. Student approved. If in need of a piece of cake and a pot of tea, this is the place - they ONLY serve sweets and drinks. I highly recommend the Chocolate Hazelnut Cake and African Nectar Tea although I am sure any combination will be just as satisfactory. True Confections was hopping when we arrived on Saturday night. Despite the crowd, the service was fast and efficient. The cake and decaf coffee we ordered arrived within just a few minutes of being ordered. The Lemon Heaven cake was a little on the dry side and the frosting wasn't very flavourful. It came with a lemon sauce that was tart, sweet, and tasty, but without this sauce the cake itself probably wouldn't have stood up on it's own. The decaf was so strong that it most of it was still in the cup when I got up to leave. Not the best coffee or dessert that I've had, but not worth writing off either. This place is clearly popular. You're losing my love, True Confections! Arrived on a Monday night with a group of 7 people. Had to wait for a bit, and finally got seated. I haven't been to this location in a while, and I did notice that they are now being run by Korean people. There's no more dim, romantic atmosphere and instead replaced by bright halogen lights. Not really liking it. I got one of my favourite cakes here, the Toasted Almond Cake, and the Mighty Leaf White Orchard tea. Our desserts arrived quickly, along with our drinks. The cake was a whole $9 for a thin slice, but it was good. Layers of almond sponge cake, toasted almond buttercream, toasted almonds and Amaretto. The texture of the cake was a bit hard; I wish it was fluffier. This portion should be shared, as it is a bit filling with the buttercream. Service was alright. Hot water was refilled upon request. Is bigger always better? Like others have mentioned the slices are huge and can easily be shared. After working in cafes where cakes were stored in refrigerated units I was concerned that the cake would be dried out. I was pleasantly surprised as my piece of chocolate cake was still quite moist. I was having a chocolate feast so I ordered a hot chocolate as well which was actually pretty damn good. I don't think the cakes were anything special however, and felt perhaps the gimmick was the size rather than the taste which is a major faux pas in my book. True Confections...ahh my true love! LOL. Well, this review maybe biased because going to UBC and living in the area, it defiantly became one of my favorite places for a late night sweet treat. I think they do cakes really well and I am A HUGE CAKE FAN!! The parking around the place is defiantly a hassle and sometimes I find it's best to just park on the street and walk over to True Confections. The seating inside inst the greatest, given they are normal chairs and tables. The decor meets the bare minimum requirements of a coffee shop. Don't get me wrong, the cakes and everything else is amazing but they could definitely use a decor update. Now onto the food! My personal favorite here is the Diplomat, I love the pastry end of the spectrum of cakes and the crisp flakiness of the Diplomat balanced with creaminess, which is not overbearingly sweet. I love to couple the Diplomat with an unsweetened Earl Grey! and if it's late, a decaf Earl Grey. Pro tip: Banana Leaf followed by True Confections hits the SPOT!!!!!!!!!! read more

This little dessert spot is known for their wide variety of decadent cakes. Good selection here, probably 30 different desserts: cheesecakes, mousses, pies, and many types of standard cakes. Many of my friends rave about True Confections; however, I can only conclude that these people aren't particularly discerning with their desserts. Personally, I find the cake to be pretty average and, like most dessert places, they make up for quality by jacking up the amount of sugar. With a homemade cake or one from a good bakery, you can use much less sugar and have the flavours of the other ingredients shine through. That said, while not spectacular, the cake is certainly satisfying and I appreciate the huge selection. Slices aren't very big and prices are a little on the high side, ranging from about $7-9, which means over $10 with tax and tip for a slice of cake! I like to think of myself as a modern woman, and thus, have no problem asking a guy out on a first date if I feel he's too chicken to and/or isn't aware that he wants to date me yet. I'm gonna let you in on a little secret about where I like to take guys out on a first date: True Confections. (Ok, so it's only happened twice. I don't make a regular habit out of asking guys out). Dessert is, to me, the perfect first date spot. It's not as cliché as going for coffee or a movie, and not as formal (or long) as going for dinner. The latter is the main reason for me. It's easier to get out of it and cut the date short it isn't going well ("Er, I have to get to bed early because I volunteered to bathe cats at the pound at 6am tomorrow"). And, if you it turns out you don't have much chemistry, you can save face by playing it off as just asking a FRIEND out for dessert, not an actual date. True Confections is a great date spot. If you have to wait, you can ooh and ahh over the gorgeous display of their cakes. My favourite are their cheesecakes, especially their tiramisu and chocolate peanut butter (one of the BEST sweet/salty food combos ever). I also love that they serve chocolate banana cream pie. Banana cream pie? Good. CHOCOLATE banana cream pie? GOOOOOD! I can find banana cream pies at a lot of places, but not many will have the (superior) chocolate version. Haven't tried their cakes (or trifle) before but they look really pretty. Ugh this place is so yuck. The cakes and desserts taste like the cheaply made crap of Save On or No Frills. The icing was like cardboard and the cake stale. I would be shocked if any foodie claimed the desserts were tasty here. Huge servings and decorated to the nines upon arriving to the table: It was full of nerdy students when I arrived for a late night snack with my boyfriend. One word.... DIRTY! The floor looked like it had t been vacuumed in months!! I was there at 5:00 pm so I know it wasn't like they had a huge rush that trashed the place. There were so many chunks of what used to be food and dirt in the crevices of the table stand I'm sure it's never been cleaned. I saw empty cigarette packs discarded on the floor of the patio and dirty forks that fell on the dining room floor and never got picked up. If that's what their dining area looks like I shudder to think what the kitchen looks like . I had the trifle (which wasn't good at all and it's my go to at the denman location) and it tasted old and coconut cake which was unbearably sweet. I would gladly next time drive farther to the denman location and pay for parking for a cleaner restaurant and better tasting desserts. read more

It has been so many years since I had been here til this last visit. True confections is a great intimate dessert spot! The cheesecakes here are amazing. This time I tried the chocolate raspberry cake and it was drool worthy perfection. read more

I am a bit picky when it comes to desserts... so this place carries cakes that are all similar to each other and mainly a bit dry or too oil/creamy It's close to UBC and has nice seating area with nice window view so I give it a 3 star! =) read more
