Haven't been for a long while so today after a walk a good friend and I sat down for tea, half decaf Americano, strawberry rhubarb pie and chocolate pecan pie. The fruit pie looked like home made crust but a canned filler. The Americano tasted like old decaf sitting in a crafe for hours. Not good at all. Server never checked on our order took a long time then came and told us the pies got lost from the paper slip and are coming. Server eventually delivered the pies, never checked back on anything and left dirty plates sitting there. It was fairly busy but there were two on. Chocolate pecan was very chocolate flavoured less pecan. Big disappointment overall. read more

A shame that it has been nothing more than a "last resort" cake house in this neighbourhood. West Enders will know that they are often inconsistent when it comes to quality. When I first discovered this place, novelty played its part and I raved about this place. It was also right down the street for me. However, after a few birthday cakes, I realize that it was not worth the convenience. Getting a slice is probably not wise, as it can be pretty expensive. The cheesecake is still OK. It's the only cake we'd order out of desperation. Even then, the setting of the cheesecake is never consistent. Often times, it was carelessly prepared, much like it was homemade. Having the flavour of a homemade cake may be a good thing, but having the look of a homemade cake may not be so. Especially not when I'm paying what they charge for it! I have had a slice of the chocolate mousse. Rich as it is, it was not worth the price! The tall cakes are attractive, but it's unfortunate that they look better than they taste. Customer service has been good so far. I don't go there enough to comment further on that. It's a choice dessert place because of its hours, location and atmosphere. Did someone say dessert? OMG. The cheesecake here is like nothing else I've ever tasted.The Strawberry and Blueberry ones are my favorite. And you know what the best part is? The cheesecakes are gluten free!! That's right folks! They're crustless!! They even have some chocolate cakes that are gluten free! I'm not even joking... Any dessert here if purely divine! And they have an amazing selection of after dinner drinks such as specialty coffees and a crazy big selection of mighty leaf teas (my favorite is green tea tropical). Yum. read more

I think some of their desserts are great, others not so much. I try not to bother with the said overpriced cake slices; looks tiny and $8.50 for that? Naaah, no thanks. Their cheesecakes aren't my favourites either. I had the oreo one and I didn't taste the oreo at all. :( But a HUUUUUGE YES to their toffee pudding bread. *drool* I had that with a glass of soy milk (instead of milk), and mmm-mmm-mmm-mmm-MMM, it was just delicious!!!! If you've had a really, really bad day, and you need a BIG piece of something very high sugar to get you through, this is the place for you. Alternatively, if you need a cake for whatever occasion, this would be another good choice. But, for an after-dinner dessert ... it's good, but it's just too much. I'm deeply disappointed. This cake was for my mother and the delivery was delayed for 2.5 hours. I did not receive any proactive call informing me the delivery will be delayed, nor did anyone follow up with me after the cake was delivered late and just left on the front door. I find this whole experience deeply disappointing and quite frankly just rude. I had to phone them twice to get an update on my cake. The least they could have done was reach out and apologize - even offer to refund my $20 delivery fee. This isn't how you support your customers. read more

This place was pretty good. My boyfriend ordered the cheesecake with raspberry sauce and I ordered the devils cake which was pretty amazing. The price of this place is a bit too much for what it is. It's good but 9$ for a slice of cake worth it? No not really. Coffees and lattes are def not very good. Not too bad interior, not too bad service, not too bad selection... Hmm... but the dessert itself, not worth mentioning. I had a devil's cake and my wife had a cheesecake. The outer layer of my devil's cake tasted stale and the inside of the cake is a bit dry and tasteless. Wife's cheesecake is... cheesecake-ish. Well, I would rate this as a 2.5 star but because of the price they charge for what we had, it's a 1 star. The over-all experience was so-so and it cost us over $20 for this... I placed an order for a tiramisu cake for my husband's 50th birthday. This was supposed to be delivered on Aug 11 between 12:00-3:00pm. However, by 3:15pm the cake was still not delivered. I called the store and the lady told me that the delivery guy left the store at 11:30am. She also mentioned that the store owner should be calling me as he just took my contact information. At 4:00pm still no delivery guy with the cake. I called the store and requested a refund. The delivery guy arrived at 4:42pm and delivered a warm cake. He took the cake out of his car trunk. No explanation from the guy (Steve). I have yet to receive a phone call from the owner. read more

The cake and pie are well done.but the inside is in desperate need of renovations. The 1976 decor is not cool or new ...it's the original thing.I pointed out the lamps filled with bugs and the cobwebs hanging from the lights. Also the nasty display case where they keep the cake. The glass looked so dirty it had a hazz over it..when I pointed this out to the waiter they said they would tell the owner.....not clean it .not sorry... I will have to pass on the plastic patio furniture that has clearly had its day..Wake Up management and see what everyone was commenting about....when we last visited. I so did not enjoy the cake. I left feeling duped and betrayed. I've actually been quite excited to visit True Confections as I love a good slice of cake or pie. Reading through the menu, I opted for the Buttered Almond cake as it didn't seem to have the custard filling or other floofy fodder found in some other cakes and it used buttercream frosting. I wanted pure cake and buttercream. And, with the promise of cakes baked fresh daily, I could hardly wait to get the super-sized slice I've heard so much about. Ok, so the slice arrives and I was underwhelmed ... nearly $9 for such a thin sliver seemed scandalous. Then I tasted it and the betrayal set in (and I was then happy that the slice wasn't any bigger). Buttercream? I think not. I'm not even sure butter was in there. It had the slick feel of vegetable shortening and lacked any richness. The cake was ok on its own. When I reached the top/outer portion of the frosting, I cringed. It had the refrigerator taste of a thousand different foods. Seriously, it was wickedly gross tasting. I take baking seriously and found this place misleading. If I had to make a guess, I'm sure they do bake cakes every day. Do they only serve cakes made that day? I don't think so. I can only assume by the refrigerator taste of my cake that it had at least hung out over night, if not longer. The frosting was not a true buttercream which is made primarily of butter and powdered sugar. I think they throw around the word buttercream a little too loosely. It's dense, creamy, and super rich. Anyone who has been to Butter Baked Goods will know what truly righteous buttercream frosting tastes like. I have satisfied my curiosity about True Confections and I won't be back. It just didn't deliver a truly good cake. As the two star rating indicates, I've experienced much better elsewhere. read more

I recently ordered the 12 inch devil's food cake and was sadly disappointed! There are supposed to be 3 layers of chocolate cake and 2 layers of chocolate mousse. We were disappointed to find a regular 2 layer cake with 1 layer of mousse. The cake was dry and crumbly with the texture of sawdust, the mousse didn't reach the edges of the cake by at least an inch and a half and he marshmallow icing was so thin that some parts of the cake were barely covered. For the steep price for 69.00 per cake, I expected much more. Having eaten at the TC on West Broadway, I assumed the TC on Denman street would offer the same quality. This is not so. With the TC on West Broadway closing down next year, is this all we're going to be left with?? read more

Ya know, I really liked this place. After my cousin and I biked around the Sea Wall in Stanley Park, we decided to get dessert! It's just up a couple of blocks from the bike rental store. We ordered a strawberry shortcake since strawberries were in season. And Oh. Ma. God. So good. The strawberry sauce was homemade, I believe. It was just too good to be from a jar. The cream was delicious. The cake was rich and heavenly. It's a huge serving (the cakes are massive) so my cousin and I shared. I also ordered a peppermint boozy moo. It's like a milk drink with 1 oz. of liquor. They have a chocolate banana, peppermint, khalua, and some others that I can't quite remember. It felt like it needed something else in mine. Bad Service! I went there last night with a friend of mine. We walked in the store and saw the sign which says wait for our host. According to my knowledge that sign is telling customers to wait for the servers' help to be seated. OK, we waited, and waited and waited for about 5 mins. There were 4 servers running around the tables and I was DAMN sure two of them saw us waiting but they didnt help us with the seat and didn't even had a greeting to us. Is it TOO HARD to say HI to the customers???? So we just found a table and sit down ourselves. The waiter walked by us twice without even asking if we were ready to order. FINE. I stopped him the third time when he was gonna pass by us and we ordered the strawberry cheesecake and white chocolate cheesecake with res berry. NOW THE FOOD...........wasn't that bad, but bad enough to make me only have half of the it. Cheesecake is my favorite dessert and I usually eat all the the slice. This time......I had to make myself to eat half of them because when I had the first bit I was gonna quit but I didn't want to waste my money. The cheesecake was too creamy and too thick. One bit of cheesecake, tons of water need to be with. Anyway, I didnt like it. I know what the cheesecake tastes like. I asked the same waiter who took our order to get us our bill. It took longer than the usual. My friend said he must forget the bill thing. I mean, there were not many customers, and there were four servers why closing a bill was that hard? hard enough to make you forget it???? I am a waitress too and work in a very busy restaurant. I understand that under the busy environment sometimes you forget customers' request. But in true confections, I didn't see the reasonable excuse to forget our request. Probably my favourite spot to get cake at a good price and with big portions! The ambiance is nice and it's great to go on for dates or have a chat with friends. The service is amazing as well too! Always super friendly and they come back to check if you ever need anything else (where as some places check on you once and leave you alone). Favourite is the Napoleon cake, their carrot cake and their strawberry short cake!! My recommendation is to have the sauce on the side if you get the strawberry shortcake. read more

REFUSED SERVICE 45 MINUTES BEFORE CLOSING BY RUDE STAFF. My friend and I went to True Confections last night for dessert, and were refused to be seated and served at 11:15pm, 45 minutes before closing. They sternly told us that they are only doing takeout orders. The restaurant policy only states that takeout orders are only available within 30 minutes of closing, as we have been refused in the past. Sometimes we were there exactly 30 minutes before closing, and still refused service. This time we were there 45 minutes before closing, and they still refused to seat us. There was no apology or explanation. This is a dessert restaurant that serves cake and pie, no cooking has to be done. How hard is it to serve a piece of cake on a plate? 45 minutes isn't enough time for them to do this for a customer? It is pretty clear that the staff was only interested in packing up and closing down the restaurant, so they could go home early. I feel sorry for the owners of this location, as they has no idea what their employees are doing behind their back. This is not the first time that this location has done this to us, but after 20 years of patronage, this is the last time we will visit True Confections as they do not respect their customers. A great place for dessert night, for all sorts of cakes. Cheesecake, trifles, chocolate cakes, pies and tartes.Right on Denman Street, this location is always busy. My all time favourite here is the Mocha Buttercream Cake-layers of mocha sponge cake, mocha buttercream and Kahlua.This might be too sweet for some people, so I usually get a tea to accompany it. A little overpriced for what it is, but at least you know that you'll find at least one dessert that you want here. read more

I lied. D and I said that we had to be good because I need to fit into a dress in a couple of months. Since we already had goodbye Mousse Cake, this was cheating. It is so good. I love their mousse cake. It's rich and so smooth. Like those perfect little truffles you get from Costco, but lighter. The service is always wonderful. My guy friends tried to persuade me that this place got one of the best cheesecakes in town, which completely failed since I don't even like cheese cake. Nice try boys. But somehow they succeeded in making me go anyways saying that they got other delicious cakes besides cheesecakes. The boys ordered the White Chocolate Raspberry, Black Top Marble and the Chocolate Caramel. I tried a bite of each hoping it might change my dislike for cheesecake. It didn't at all. My girl and I ordered a piece of the Mocha Buttercream. This cake definitely has that WOW factor. It was 6 layers high with mocha buttercream smothered in between it. It wasn't overly sweet just how I like it. The only thing I didn't like was how dense the spongecake was. I guess I'm too use to the light airy sponge cakes at those Chinese bakeries. True Confections was a nice place to end an evening with something sweet. The restaurant was not packed she we arrived, so we didn't have any issues getting a table. Service was fine and the pie and cake selection was good. Costs were a bit steep at $8/slice, but the slices are pretty big---- I could only eat half. Although not a great business model, I WISH I could get a half slice since my date is a fan of the fruit pies and I just want chocolate and peanut butter! It's a bit chain-y and not in an easy location if you're not a local, but is perfectly nice place for a slice of pie after dinner. read more

TC reminds me of my high school days...this was THE where all the cool kids went for dessert. 20 years later (ouch), I don't think it has the same appeal (probably because there are so many other dessert places to choose from), but you can count on TF to still make your eyes water with hunger from their display cabinet alone. The cafe itself is definitely dated, and could use an upgrade. Prices have gone up definitely, but hey, when you have a craving, you have a craving! I'm a pie gal, and their banana cream pie hits the spot! It could use a few more actual banana chunks in there, but a banana cream pie, is a banana cream pie. No complaints here. read more

We had a big dinner, and wanted to walk around and grabbed dessert. The name of this place was catchy so we went in-- the service was quick. They were out of decaf and had a new pot brewed up right away. The cake slices are on the thin side, and i found both our desserts to be too sweet. Their chocolate hazelnut cake was very good, but let me tell you about their shortcake... Simply amazing.

We stopped here on a Monday night after having dinner nearby. We ordered the Black and White cake and a coffee to share. The cake was alright, but I would expect more from a place specializing in dessert. I will say that my preference is usually for a light, airy, subtly sweet style of cake and smooth, rich, velvety chocolate; if you are into dense, heavy cake and icing, this could be your place. read more

Pecan pie - The pie filling is sort of light a buttery soft caramel but not as sweet and sticky. It was creamy and rich with salty aftertaste. The pecan were nice and toasted with a crunch. Hazelnut Mousse - . It is smooth, creamy and rich. Not overly chocolate-y and has intense hazelnut flavours. Imagine the centre part of a Ferrero Roche but lightly, airier! *loves* The flourless dark chocolate cake at the bottom is dense and gives the mousse a nice bitterness. They r pretty pricey for what you get but definitely great quality and delicately put together cakes. I ordered it to go so I didn't have much experience with the service. The guy who tried to give me suggestions and introduced their cakes was pretty knowledgeable and nice. The lady who was packing my dessert and passed it to me looked like she had a loooong day and hated her job, so who knows how the sit down service is. read more

Whats great about this place it that it's open late. They also have a plethora of choices when it comes to cakes, pies, and everything in-between. There can be a line at times, even at 10pm at night. But it moved pretty quick, taking about 10min. Sadly, the flavors of the various desserts we chose, and there was 6 of us, 5 dishes; were all pretty lack luster. too sweet of a frosting, not enough of a certain flavor, each cake/pie/cheesecake had something missing to make it memorable in a good way. Basically things fell flat for us, but it's nice to know at the very least that there is a late-night place to get your sweet tooth cravings fixed. read more

I've been here twice due to all the hype from my friends. Once for the Chocolate Banana Cream Pie. An okay experience, I've never had banana cream pie before so I thought it was decent. Although the cream gets a little heavy in the stomach afterwards because the portion was pretty big for one person. The other time for the Tiramisu. I love love loved the flavour of the tiramisu, warning, you can definitely taste the alcohol. I was a little disappointed that it did not come with any lady fingers. The menu said it would be surrounded by lady fingers and I got none? The staff wasn't that approachable either, they just mostly stood behind the counter and chatted -- maybe because I went at a not so busy time. Both times I kept on glancing at the counter because all the cakes looked so good! But I decided against ordering another slice since no one was paying me any mind. read more

Love, love, love their cake slices. My favourite is the Diplomat cake with the sponge layer, puff pastry layer, custard and butter cream. What's not to love about it? Their cheesecakes are to die for especially their white chocolate raspberry. I am never disappointed by the quality of their offerings. My family adores it when I bring any of their goodies home. This also a great place to go for dessert on date night. The low light and intimate atmosphere makes lingering over dessert a great end to a fabulous evening. read more

I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. I went here with my two friends on a trip to Vancouver because of a rave review in a travel book and we all got a piece of cheesecake and tea. The cakes in the cases were stately and looked beautiful, but the cheesecake was not good, at least for this price. The cheesecake doesn't have crust, and honestly, that's my favorite thing about cheesecake. On the menu it describes the texture of the cheesecake as being quite dense, but that was definitely not something that appealed to me. It was overly dense and not fluffy in the slightest. It needed some sort of textural contrast that a crust could have provided. I got Oreo cheesecake and it was nothing special - basically a vanilla cheesecake with hardly any cookie flavor. I could (and will) make better at home. Plus, our service was terrible. We were one of two groups in the shop and it took forever for our waitress (who I assumed was the owner) to bring the bill and to pick it up again after she dropped it off at our table. We kept trying to make eye contract and wave her down, but it was obvious she was purposefully ignoring us. When my friend went up to her with our credit cards to ask if she could charge us separately she was extremely rude and needless to say, we did not tip. read more

I was looking forward to going to True Confections. Seeing pictures of their cakes and seeing my friends hype it up on Facebook, I came in with high hopes. It was okay. Our server was really nice and attentive, but I thought the cake was meh. They ran out of chocolate cake so I settled on the Devil's Food Cake with marshmallow fluff frosting. It looked gorgeous on the cake, but that was about it. I felt the cake was a bit on the dry side and when I think of Devil's Food Cake, I think of a rich, dark, chocolate flavour enhanced by the addition of coffee, but this it wasn't like this at all. I felt a bit ripped off paying $8.75 for a slice. My boyfriend ordered Strawberry Rhubarb pie. That was also meh. I think the local bakery here in Port Coquitlam makes a far yummier strawberry rhubarb pie and charges the same price for a whole pie that TC charges for one slice. All in all, I would give TC another chance. Perhaps I need to try their other desserts. read more
