I was very disappointed with my experience at this location compared to the wonderful experience I had at the Pleasanton location. First off, the customer service was poor right from the beginning. The young men never greeted me or asked what I wanted. It was very awkward. Next, I told them I had two large orders that needed to be payed for separately and they were not able to keep the orders separate so this caused mass confusion when it was time to pay. Also, when you are waiting to pay, the grocery store shoppers keep breaking in line for their groceries to be rung up. I would think they would make them pay at the regular check out lanes, but the BBQ check out is right by the door, so I guess that is why they come here. That is very irritating and takes so much longer to get BBQ orders processed timely. This HEB is just too crowded to allow people to pay for groceries here. It was almost a fair like atmoosphere due to the large number of people shopping. Just too crowded to enjoy coming here. Now for the food. The brisket bark was very hard, chewy, and had to be pulled off. It was served room temperature. The sausage was dry. I'm not sure if it was old or if it had been microwaved a long time. Other than that the flavor was good. The meat did not taste fresh at all. I did enjoy the creamed corn and macaroni and cheese. I also tasted the pulled pork sandwich and it was perfect, very very good. If you want to know how good their food can be, I suggest you go to the Pleasanton location. I doubt I will return to this location and I live in San Antonio. Like I said, disappointing. read more

First let me say that I did not even know that HEB had catering. We were looking for an athletic school function meal for athletes and their parents when we were given the info for HEB. We got into contact with Mr. Steven Lopez and he assisted us in getting the best menu items within our budget. He was very patient with us as 1, we had a budget and 2, we had not tasted or used HEB for catering and our event was in a week. Mr. Lopez offered us to taste the BBQ before the event to ensure we would be satisfied. It was one of the best pieces of brisket/turkey that I have tasted. For our event we had a quarter piece of chicken, brisket, brisket beans, and potato salad. It was a hit! And within our budget. That was back in October and we have used them ever since. They not only have awesome BBQ, we had tamale plate in December, pasta plate in March. We even use them for our director's meetings now. They have a variety of food to choose from and so far they have all been delicious. We couldn't be happier with Mr. Lopez and his team's services. read more

The food was decent. I'm giving a low rating because of the service. The Caucasian woman at the register quickly and respectfully serviced everyone in line before me; however, I was the only person she made "prove" I had an order. Gave her my name just as everyone else did, spelled it, and told her what it was - but she wouldn't give me our food until I showed her the order in my phone. By far this is the best bbq in San Antonio! The brisket melts in your mouth. Then on top of that the manager named Steven who welcomed us very warmly! He spoke to us for a good 15 minutes and then gave us free bannana pudding! All in all San Antonio isn't known for its bbq but this place will definitely get us on the map! read more

The food was good but it wasn't anything to write home about. The marbled brisket was tender but it was SUPER salty. So salty, it was hard to eat it with BBQ sauce. I had a brisket sandwich and the brisket topped frito pie. The frito pie was just chips and shredded cheese with oily brisket on top. I was really disappointed with the frito pie (the photos made it look awesome). The prices are kinda expensive and the sides only looked average. The best thing was the banana pudding they give you for free when you check in on yelp. I spent over $40 but no one left satisfied. It would be diffucult to justify going again. read more

I bought their smoked turkey ( the best) brisket beef bbq (excellent). Cream corn and fried corn VERY good! Mac and cheese was ok. LOVE their banana pudding! Meat ball Hero's are a great lunch item. I heard about True Texas BBQ from my coworker, so I decided to try it. We arrived around 6pm. I stood there and watched the young lady slice some brisket. First thing I noticed was a lack of smoke ring on the meats. She pulled some lean out to slice and it looked dry. She was slicing pretty darn hard putting her shoulder into it. She then took the rest and threw it in a pile for chopped I believe. It was a good size piece. She even knew at that point it was scrap. I'm surprised she even served those two slices. We all prefer lean (flat) as long as it's moist. So paying $18.99/lb for what looked like ovenish baked dry brisket was out of the question. I can only review based on appearance and not taste. I'll stick to my Central Texas heavy hitters that most are less expensive per pound, and they've been Q'ing for decades on real pits. Sorry, will not be trying your BBQ. read more

First things first: lean brisket and smoked turkey were moist, juicy, and flavorful. I thought better than Smitty's. I didn't order sides, but they have sides. They will let you sample too. The order came with onions, pickles, a loaf of bread, and BBQ sauce. The sauce was spicy, but delicious! Second, I ordered online! You annotate the day/time you want to pick up. Lesson learned: pick up close to your gathering/party. I selected an early time, so I had to put in fridge and reheat an hour before event. Pre-heat oven @ 170 degrees and set to "warn." The brisket and turkey still were moist and juicy. So if your event is at 6:00, pick up at 5:00. Everything was ready on time. The staff even offered to hold my order for me until my event, but I just brought it home since I was already there. If you order online, you get 20% off. I called before ordering to get the "code" since I didn't see anything at checkout. Finally, the staff was great. They called me to tell me my order was ready. As I mentioned above, they were willing to hold my order until later. I will definitely go back again. read more

It was pretty good brisket but the pinto beans were mixed with pulled beef and were more like a soup or something. I did NOT like the pinto beans that are required eating with BBQ. The service was very attentive. This is all in a huge HEB but the eating area is separated nicely from the store. All of the in-store eating is up front in the store. read more

Food *** Value * Compared with other BBQ places I like, I would say this place is about 30-40% overpriced. It might make sense to eat here if you are shopping at the H.E.B. grocery store this place is part of; however it is definitely not worth a trip there by itself. I ate here based on a glowing review in the San Antonio Express-News. The food was nowhere near as good as I was led to believe. I had the fatty brisket (they were out of lean), the sausage, pinto beans and green beans. The brisket was fairly bland and way too greasy, even for fatty brisket. The sausage was the star of the meal, nice and spicy and not too fatty. The pinto beans and green beans were run of the mill for the sides, nothing spectacular. Peculiarly though, my beans seemed to have more meat scraps than beans in the serving. Overall, the meal was mediocre except for very good sausage, but I can get good sausage other places. read more

My family and I decided to give this place a try. It was our first time so we didn't know what we wanted to order. The staff was extremely kind and patient and also explained the variety of ways we could order. Both my husband and son-in -law tried the brisket frito pie and seemed to have enjoyed it because it was all gone. Both my daughters tried the loaded bake potato with brisket and stated it was good and filling. Both the frito pie and the loaded potatoes had a generous serving of chopped brisket. I ordered the 3 meat plate with moist brisket, which was ok, but had a little too much fat. They had explained that to me, so I should have gotten the lean one. Next time. Another meat I ordered on my plate was the ribs, which by the way were amazing and very tender . The last meat I tried was the pork sausage, it was good. For my side I got double beans with brisket. They were delicious, and had a spicy taste. Pam was extremely friendly. I asked her if I could sample some banana/pinacolada pudding because I wanted to taste it, but was to full after that plate to buy a full cup. They were both good. My favorite was the pinacolada one. For the overall experience I give it 4 1/2 stars, only because they didn't have beef sausage like other locations offered. Prices were good for a family of 5.
