I was on a business trip visiting San Antonio, from Florida, and I got to pick the type of food for lunch, so of course I had to say "I'd like to try something that is Texas", so off we went to Rudy's. Once there, it was love at first site. A nice, casual atmosphere, everyone working so attentively, and moving a rather long line fast. I didn't want to get stuffed and get sleepy, so I just ordered a 1/4 pound brisket and two sides. The meat was cooked perfectly, so tender and tasty! For the side, I just went with traditional pinto beans and Cole slaw. The sides were fresh and tasty too. The beans were not undercooked, and the sauce was added a nice touch, but the meat so good it didn't really need sauce. I used some anyway because it was so good. My only regret is that I wish I ordered more because when I finished, I wanted more. I hope to be back again soon and next, I'm going to try much more. This is definitely a repeat. read more

10/10 the worst BBQ in Texas. The moment you drive up, you can smell the wood burning and the BBQ cooking. The line is deceiving so don't get discouraged if you see your wrapping out the door! It moves pretty quick and it's well worth the wait. Chopped with potato salad is my go to and the combination is My husband always gets brisket and a slice of the sausage - not my preference, but he said it's one of the best he's had in San Antonio. I specifically asked for lean cut of brisket and half of the 1 lb order I got is nothing but fat. I'm pretty sure my wife got sick because of the brisket being too fatty. The only reason I gave this a 2 star because the corn is what keeping this place open. I also ordered a pint of Mac and Cheese for the first time and it wasn't cheap. $9 and they chose to use huge rigatoni pasta which filled the container with only about 20-30 pasta. Service is great and staff are very fast at getting your order. Most of the seating is outdoor and bench style seating. Thankfully, it was not as hot. The bbq we had was all very juicy and had a nice Smokey flavor. The meat was a bit bland but they had season and sauce on the tables. I wish they had a spicy hot sauce and maybe my sandwich would have been better. The banana pudding and Oreo was good but sadly, the banana bread was very dry and sold only by the entire loaf. I'm going to be as nice as possible because I have fond memories here. 10/15 years ago this was the place. I remember ordering catering, bringing family. This place no longer resembles anywhere near what we remembered. Let's get to it. We kept it simple. Brisket, turkey, jalapeño sausage, cream corn, and beans. The only thing we agreed on was the turkey and bbq sauce are still as good as we remember. The brisket was tough, dry and under seasoned. The beans were under seasoned, and the cream corn was just ok. The jalapeño sausage was just ok as well. Nothing great. I remember it used to always be crowded. There wasn't very many people there. I'm so perplexed as to why it is so different. I don't know if it has anything to do with the pit masters? I'm not going to go as far as to say should have gone to bill millers across the street...but was pretty darn close. Also a little expensive. Again bbq, great bbq you don't mind paying. I saw a Rudy's and I went in and ordered beef ribs. The gentleman that were cutting the meat were talking and not listening. Well I had ordered beef ribs. I paid $28. I did not get sides. I did not get beef ribs when I got home I noticed that they were pink and they were not beef ribs. They were pork ribs and I had ordered beef. First time at this location. The layout of the restaurant is interesting, very first Rudy's. I only ordered 3 jumbo brisket potato's. The guy taking my order laughed when I asked for extra toppings on the side for them. From previous experience the potato gets dry, so it's just my family's preference. He continued by telling his coworkers 2 separate times still laughing at us and looking at us. He was preparing our food so he was right it front of us. This Rudy's seems a little outdated compared to the other ones in regard to the spacing when ordering your food and the menu options. The line was crowded and it was hot outside. Overall, the service was good and everybody seemed happy to be there. They were all helpful and kind. I specifically wanted the cream corn, but was left with disappointment. When I arrived, they stated that they didn't have any which was fine because I was okay with waiting for it however when I got home I quickly learned that the cream corn was not of good quality. The cream was very watery and you could tell that the corn was not cooked in the cream long enough -- you can't rush greatness! Their BBQ sauce is yummy in my tummy. Pudding was ok but the corn and meats are a must. We ate outside and were able to see the sea world fireworks from there. Lots of space and sitting for so many with our big party that came in. The inside was chilly so pretty much why we chose to sit out. Parking is in the back and the side. Entering in to sit is in the front and back. There was a different area to order but I didn't get to see where because family went and brought the food out. The setup of this restaurant is very unique but it works. The staff is so friendly. We ordered pint size sides, they said it was good for 2-3 people. And although I think that's correct, I think we could have done fine with the smaller size. The 2 of us ate the cream corn and Mac & Cheese sides but with the amount of meat that we ordered that was too much. They have sides like jalapeños, onions, pickles, etc inside for your enjoyment as well. Don't let the fact that Rudy's is connected to a gas station deter you from making this restaurant a choice. The beans was the only food with the pickles I ate. My kids said the chicken was good. I did not try the chicken because I was so upset with the brisket. Rudy's is iconic in the SA area, great story behind the brand. Walked in, greeted with a smile as we perused the menu. No combo plates here, everything ordered ala carte, which is fine by me. Ordered half pound of the brisket, half pound of the ribs and half a jalapeno sausage link. Wife had the beans, but I had to try the cream corn. Plenty of picnic table seating outside under a covered patio. Brought our order out and tucked in. Brisket was moist, tender and full of smoky flavor. Ribs were small but very tender and smoky. Some pretty good authentic barbecue. I had a very rare craving for barbecue the other day and stopped by Rudy's for the first time in eons. The place was extremely relaxed with a small-town country store vibe, complete with a small merch section at the front of the business, and had both indoor and outdoor seating with large tables set up in a cafeteria style with plastic checkered table cloths and fold out chairs for seating. If you are allergic to burning cedar like I am, I highly recommend sitting outside to mitigate the reaction. I think they were burning a mix of wood and not just cedar alone as I dealt with some watery eyes and mild discomfort for the short while I was there, but I wanted to mention this upfront as it did affect me. The back half of the indoor seating area smelled like a brisket smoker and was so strong that I ended up having to immediately throw my clothes into the wash and shower when I got home as the smell clung to the fabric and my hair. With all that said, the food was pretty good. You order outside right in front of a smoker and pay by the sides, desserts, and weight of your protein. The smallest protein serving size is half a pound and comes on parchment paper, while the sides come in styrofoam cups or concession stand paper food trays. It's a little messy, but you should be able to contain everything to the large serving tray they stack everything on. Be advised that if you order a fountain drink, it costs a little more as they're reusable plastic cups you can take home. We ordered a half pound of Brisket, half pound of Chicken, Mac-n-Cheese, Beans, and complimentary ButterKrust Bread. The Chicken was a little too on the fattier side for me but practically fell off the bone. The leaner parts were pretty good but the amount of bones in the meat made it difficult to eat. The Brisket had a good seasoning and was the preferred of our two proteins. It wasn't all that fatty, a little dry, thus benefitted from their bbq sauce, but really good nonetheless. The Beans were solid at best by themselves, but went exceptionally well with the Brisket and ButterKrust Bread. Last but not least, the Mac-n-Cheese was phenomenal and we wish we'd gotten a bigger side of it. We would return to Rudy's purely for their Mac-n-Cheese. I'm not one to normally go crazy over or really get excited at the existence of mac and cheese on a menu but Rudy's Mac-n-Cheese is worth getting excited for. We were a little confused at first to see that they used a thicker penne noodle in lieu of a 'traditional' elbow pasta, but the creamy Alfredo sauce and cheese sauce had us fighting for the last bite it was so delicious. From prior experience, I can say this place is good for family gatherings as the space is massive and the price is good for large quantities of food. If you have bad cedar allergies, let others order for you and sit outside. Maybe consider taking an allergy medication. Rudy's is good barbecue, more authentic than most places, and gets a solid 4 star from us. read more

Really disappointed with Rudy's this time around... I've been to Rudy's a dozen plus times when visiting San Antonio, and it's always been good/reasonably priced BBQ. Boy, has it gone downhill since the last time I visited in 2019 (maybe, they're like every other restaurant that can't find good help since the free COVID give-a-way?). To start, we went on a Monday night and there were 7 people in line... We waited nearly 25 minutes to get our food - It was a complete charade and a clinic on restaurant mismanagement. There were 6 employees working (one taking orders and 5 cutters, servers, etc.), and all were moving as quickly as Brandon going up the stairs of Air Force One... Not to mention there were employees cutting meats and eating in the food line in front of customers (major health department violation). As for the service itself, it was okay, but not great... The lady at the counter was pleasant, but rather disinterested. Onto the food... Simply not good. The BBQ was average at best (the meats were overly smoked, dried out, and seemingly not fresh). The sides were equally as disappointing, as they were ridiculously salty to the point of nearly being not edible. The best of the food was the smoked chicken... Not bad, but certainly nothing to write home about. I have a sneaky suspicion that the food (to include the meats) are smoked/prepared off-site and shipped to the Rudy's locations, as the meats were dry and the sides were dished out of plastic-like tubs. Maybe I'm wrong, but I grew up working in restaurants and can tell when food is made ahead of time and not fresh... But I digress. We ended up spending $70+ (for 2 people), which is absolutely outrageous for the portion size and quality of food... Clearly times have changed over the years at Rudy's. Lastly, and probably the most alarming issue were all the rat traps placed along the outside of the building... Not only gross, but a huge health concern. I certainly hope management makes necessary changes to customer service and instills some necessary quality control and leadership, as Rudy's is in dire need of an immediate/major overhaul. read more

So disappointed it's Easter 2026. I ordered more than 300.00 worth of food plus tips on for separate orders. First rain was already a factor and live far. Am disabled and I was alone. Another customer helped me. Not employees. They offered me a box. I added another order while I was there. Tipped four times. Four orders. lot of food tried to check everything. Had my online receipts. Got all the way home. One Quart of potato salad was missing and one quart of cobbler was also missing. Tried to call. Got like dispatcher who transferred me to store. Came here for dinner take out to enjoy with family members (5 of us altogether). A bit difficult to find the front door; accidentally went through the gas station inside market- where all of the seating is. But again, no clear marking as to where to go to order your selections. Once we found it, you go in cafeteria style to order what you want. As you tell them how many pounds of whatever meat, they cut to order and wrap it in lined butcher paper. They give you many slices of bread and little cups of bbq sauce to go with your order that you can either take out or go back into the market store where the main eating tables are or the outside seating area. All service personnel were polite and patient and treated guests with respect. We order 2 sausage links (those you order by the piece), a pound of brisket and 2 pounds of ribs. They weighed everything and made sure we knew the exact weight, as the slicer approximates. If you don't want the overage or change your mind on how much you want, they don't make you feel guilty about not taking it all. The brisket was so juicy and tender; we loved it. The sausage was a good medium texture and flavorful. The ribs were flavorful but they were not fall off the bone and we felt slightly under cooked. We parked out in the back and entered two large air conditioned rooms filled with dining picnic tables. Seating is plentiful and apparently this is the country store as well, selling various bottled beverages and their homemade rubs and sauces. At the front of the store as you leave, on the right side, you'll find the line to order. Line can be long, but moves steadily. Meats are ordered by the 1/2 lb and sides by container size. While waiting in line, hubby and I were given a tasting spoon of creamed corn. Yummy, but unfortunately I'm sensitive to dairy. All the employees were friendly. Meats were served on parchment paper and sides in paper containers. All meats were cooked to perfection. 1/2lb Baby back ribs- tasty, meaty, no fat 1/2 chicken- could use a little more seasoning, but went great with the table side BBQ sauce. 1/2lb chopped brisket, pork, chicken- hubby enjoyed this on the white bread with pickles. Rudy's, BBQ side, IMO is a spot for tourists or folks that want an alternative to Bill Miller's but pay more. I've eaten Rudy's inside the store and to-go, with the overall experience being nearly identical. Here the side items are the shining stars, compared to the meats. Brisket is always dry, but oddly not tough and the turkey is warm deli counter slices. Sausage is solid though and I'd stick to that. The side items are great, with cream corn and potato salad being awesome. I'd actually pick these up to take to a BBQ. On my most recent visit, we got a the 15-person order, which was room temp and the lady working the register (store side) was not just rude but hostile for some odd reason....to the point of almost being confrontational. I wanted to change (1) of the gallons of sweet teas to a unsweet and was barked at to sign for the order being that could happen. Okay, it's not like I was going to steal the tea or try to get one over on Rudy's since the order was paid for previously and confirmed in-store.
