Plenty of food for your money! Fried appetizers were delicious! Entrées you can taste the fresh vegetables (esp. the veggie fried rice); however, 4 stars due to somewhat bland taste. Leftovers had better flavor after marination. I don't usually use the sauce packs, but I added some soy sauce, and this also helped. To my surprise, they gave us about half-dozen fortune cookies. Great food, affordable prices, friendly owners and staff. What else can you ask for? I've been here twice, and everything I've tried has been really good. The moo shu pork and orange beef were some favorites. Even their lo mein, which at many places is kind of dry and bland, is very flavorful here. I like that they have some sort of vintagey cocktails. Want a Rob Roy with your food? Yes you do. It was just a little hectic the last time we were there, even without a full dining room, but really it wasn't much of a problem and it did even out after a short rush. I'm new to this area and was looking for a dependable hole in the wall Chinese place and this just wasn't it. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing but I just wanted impressed. The garlic beef was very sweet and not at all spicy, despite my request for it to be extra spicy. The egg drop soup was very watery and didn't taste like much. I also got vegetable fried rice which had a bunch of water just sitting at the bottom of the container. Giving it 2 stars because the crab rangoons were good. Wouldn't recommend though. read more

I tried ordering on Sunday night around 6:45 PM for pick up which was still early since they close at 8 PM. When I tried calling no one answered and got a recorded message about the number not being available to try later. Kept on calling every so often no luck, then proceeded to order online, and as soon as I picked an item got a pop up window stating that pick up service was not available to try later. Called back again and their line transferred into a fax line, what gives?? Being that I didn't have any luck via phone or online, proceeded to go into the restaurant just to totally be ignored by their wait staff. So I asked the girl at the front desk that I was waiting for some one to seat me and she right away looked at the clock (it was 7PM) and then with an attitude tells me "to just stand there and someone will get you" like I waited for 5 minutes and after seeing their wait passed by me without even eye contact but rather, totally being ignored I simply left because considering that they had customers they could have still accommodated me or tell me that they're no longer taking orders but not ignore a long time customer that has been coming for years is down right unprofessional! My family has been eating here for over 20 years. Not because there are no other Chinese restaurants. This is because the food has always remained consistently good year in and year out. The menu is very extensive and I think that anyone could find something that they would like. Recently they have made aesthetic changes to the front of the restaurant, which give it more of a modern vibe. This is the place that i compare all other Chinese food to, and in the north Chicagoland area there is no place better. When going I would recommend trying the egg drop soup, or any of their soups for that matter cause they are fantastic. They make real Chinese food here... So don't order crab rangoons or chicken wings. Instead try their pot stickers or the bu bu platter because they are incredibly well done. As for the entrees, there are plenty of options to chose from. As I am regular I recommend trying the Hunan Beef, Princess Shrimp, Curry Chicken, or my favorite, which is an off the menu specialty of the chef, Richard's chicken. Seriously though, that last dish has to be tried when dining here because it is absolutely delicious. This place is the best Chinese food restaurant on the North Shore hands down. For a reasonable price, you get a lot of really great Chinese food at Tsing Tao. I've been going to Tsing Tao for literally years, maybe close to 12, both with and without my parents. The dishes are traditional Chinese, family run and owned. The service is prompt, and tea is served, as well as water. Appetizers are really reasonable, unlike some places that charge 9 or 10 dollars for one. We ordered the Crab Rangoon, which is my favorite appetizer ever, Chinese or not. It comes out slightly crunchy, but completely soft and yielding when it hits your taste buds. Highly recommended! Tsing Tao makes the best ones I have ever had. For about 2 dollars, I got a cup of Egg Drop Soup, also a Chinese classic. Although it is a rather simple soup, it is extremely flavorful and filled with yummy egg goodness. Simple isn't always bad when it comes to soups. Entrees were Fried Duck and Mushu Beef. Since I've been to Tsing Tao many a time, I knew exactly what to order off the menu. My date let me choose, as it was his first time there, and was pleasantly surprised with just how fantastic the dishes were. He preferred the Mushu, which are thin pancakes filled with various vegetables and then beef, served with a plum sauce. Delectable! The Fried Duck isa personal favorite of mine; I enjoy ordering things that people normally shy away from. Duck is certainly on that list, but when prepared properly, it is amazing. A side of fried rice was ordered, and it was good as well, but fried rice usually is. Though according to my date, it was the best fried rice he had ever had, so take that as you will Overall, Tsing Tao is a hidden gem tucked away in suburban Wilmette, but worth finding. My newly minted 4-year-old requested Chinese fir his big day. We ordered a ton of food. 1. The chicken curry: I didn't care for it. I was so disappointed because I love curry. The consistency was too watery. The spice was weird. It had a bite, but not I. A good way. 2. Beef lo mien: My husband said it was good, but he's had better. I liked it, but it was too saucy. I like it dry, not a ton of sauce. 3. Combo fried rice: my mother said it was dry. My son didn't touch it. So I'd give it 50 percent. 4. Egg rolls: They were not tasty, according to my dad. He's a man of few words, so he left it at that. 5. Sweet and sour chicken: Any battered food is good. I thought the chicken was a tad too dry. My dad liked the chicken, but said the sauce wasn't delicious. He didn't expand, so there's that. 6. Egg drop soup: My son LOVES egg drop soup. BF had orange chicken, which he liked, but I did NOT. It tasted like they added too much cornstarch and had almost no actual chicken pieces in it. Lots of breading, not my bag. We got sizzling rice soup without the rice. Last time I checked that was kind of the point of the soup. Pot stickers were ok, a bit greasy but if you like that thing, go for it! If you're in Wilmette and you have a craving for Chinese, I would say you will probably get a decent meal here...but nothing special. read more

The most egregious failing of this restaurant is that its COMPLETELY inaccessible to someone in a wheelchair. The restrooms are in the back down a lonnnnnnnnnnng, narrrrrrrrrrrrrrow flight of stairs. The soup was meh (wife called it slimy and pushed it far away). Carry-out menu calls Tsing Tao Shrimp "A very special exotic dish!" I fell for it. The dish includes peas and carrots that looked and tasted as if they came out of a can. Get a clue everyone the sign outside the restaurant says Mandarin. And everyone is complaining about this food not being Chinese enough. Have you ever had Chinese food in China? There's probably one thing on the menu you would recognize and Order. That being said when you come here order the orange beef, Richard shrimp, Mongolian beef, or the princess chicken. Find the Mandarin or Szechuan dishes and they are top-notch. Order Cantonese and you get Cantonese which does not have a ton of garlic or spice. The service is great the food comes out hot. This was the first Chinese restaurant we tried after moving to Wilmette. We came from having NO good Chinese restaurants in the small Oregon town we lived in, so this was pretty good. However, I would NOT recommend the Sweet & Sour Chicken. The sweet & sour juice was just a liquid, really runny, and did not taste good. The egg rolls were really good, as was the Mongolian beef that my wife got. So, we'd definitely try it again, but I would never get the Sweet & Sour Chicken again, which is a bummer, because that's normally one of my favorite dishes. read more

EVERYTHING about Tsing Tao is amazing. Between eating with family and my friends, I honestly eat there 3 times a week. I have friends that drive in from the city to eat here. The food is incredible. I strongly suggest Mongolian Beef, Christian's Chicken (different version of Princess chicken), and Richards chicken. Actually the whole menu is great. EVERYTHING is homemade. Love their shrimp toast and their Wonton soup is one of the best there is. (I also love the Hot & sour as well) Most important, their food is always consistent. OMG, I can't forget their pot stickers!!! Besides the amazing food, the best part of going to Tsing Tao is the service! Richard, Robert, and the entire family are truly amazing people, They will honestly go out of their way to make you happy and no special request gets denied. they are extremely attentive, friendly, and have amazing personalities, which honestly had led to a life long friendship with them. My choices: egg roll (average; better with a lot of hot mustard) hot and sour soup (amazing - was the highlight; would love bucket of this to take home) fried rice (average/bland) sesame chicken (slightly above average - pretty heavy on the sauce). All averages accounted for, it's still an awesome deal for a quick lunch. It really did hit the spot for a cold windy winter day work day lunch.
