I've been here exactly once so far, but will soon be a repeat customer. I ordered takeout of two items. The first was sweet and sour soup and it was very good. The second was a chicken dish that is part of a secret menu and named after the owner I think. It was so delicious that I felt compelled to text a local friend about it a couple bites in. EVERYTHING about Tsing Tao is amazing. Between eating with family and my friends, I honestly eat there 3 times a week. I have friends that drive in from the city to eat here. The food is incredible. I strongly suggest Mongolian Beef, Christian's Chicken (different version of Princess chicken), and Richards chicken. Actually the whole menu is great. EVERYTHING is homemade. Love their shrimp toast and their Wonton soup is one of the best there is. (I also love the Hot & sour as well) Most important, their food is always consistent. OMG, I can't forget their pot stickers!!! Besides the amazing food, the best part of going to Tsing Tao is the service! Richard, Robert, and the entire family are truly amazing people, They will honestly go out of their way to make you happy and no special request gets denied. they are extremely attentive, friendly, and have amazing personalities, which honestly had led to a life long friendship with them. This has been our go-to Chinese restaurant here in Wilmette for over 10 years, but recently I've noticed the quality of the food has been declining. One of my favorites has always been their Chinese chicken wings appetizer, which were actually chicken legs prepared so that the meat was all tucked at one end of the bone, then fried. It was a real bargain, too--6 "wings" for about $3. But over the past year I've noticed the meat has been getting scantier, and the last time I ordered them they turned out to be real chicken wings, separated into two pieces (the part that looks like a miniature chicken leg and the other part with two bones and not much meat). So the "6 piece Chinese chicken wings" is now apparently 3 regular chicken wings. Most recently when we ordered from them, I asked for their curry chicken, which I'd had in the past and was very good--good curry flavor, a nice mix of meat and vegetables, and not too spicy. This last time what came home was a large amount of nearly uncooked onion, a smattering of other vegetables and chicken. When I called to complain, and mentioned that I'd noticed a change in the quality of their food, the woman I spoke with actually told me that they'd been in business for 30 years and nothing had changed. She continued in this vein when I pointed out the obvious change in the chicken wings. If she had acknowledged that they had been forced to adjust some recipes in order to keep their prices from climbing as fast as food inflation, I could have at least understood that. But to deny the obvious in the face of blatant evidence made me completely lose my taste for this particular restaurant. read more

Lunch special is very nice, with soup to fortune cookie included. The fried rice is probably the best in the area, the shrimp and vegetables had plenty of shrimp, and the vegetables were good. The food was served good and hot! I really like the chicken wing that came with it, and the tea appeared without having to ask for it. The hot and sour soup is every bit as delicious as someone else here noted. And there are white tablecloths! For a spur of the moment lunch on a rainy day, a complete meal in a relaxing atmosphere with good food, lunch for two with change back from $20, and money to put back in my pocket after leaving a good tip, who could ask for more? read more

I really love this place. It has been my grandmas favorite Chinese choice since I was a child. It's family run and they have some excellent menu items. Their orange chicken is possibly the best that you will find and the rest of their menu is packed with fresh tasty options. I've seen reviews across the board for this place, but it reminded me of my favorite Chinese restaurant from the south suburbs growing up. From the menu to the types of plates they used, it reminded me of my childhood so this is admittedly biased. Honestly the mooshoo chicken and mongolian chicken were fantastic! I have been eating at this restaurant since I was a little kid. I've eaten almost everything on the menu and I've never had anything that I didn't like. Their food is wonderful and they have the best hot sour soup I've ever had... and I've eaten a lot of it! I've taken many friends and family here and everyone has loved it. They are handy with the tea and if you run out and ever want more, just tip the lid up. The bu bu tray is delicious and the presentation is pretty cool! read more

If you are looking for old Cantonese classics and cheap, strong cocktails, then you will be happy. Great service, good food! I was not expecting much when we walked in--the space is a bit dingy. But we were so pleasantly surprised. Our waiter was very sweet to our small children, chatting with them and bringing them "chopstick helpers". The food is American Chinese, so don't expect a Chinatown experience. Nasty. Mushy lo mein, slimy corn-starchy beef and broccoli, and flavorless mushu! How can you screw up Mu shu? Even with the more sketch Chinese food spots you can usually count on the veggie Mu shu. Kind of OK. Not nearly as good as I remembered it being. Tasteless vegi egg rolls, good hot and sour soup. The only flavor the Hunan beef had was the dried peppers (good heat level) and the soy sauce I added. The Schecwan Green Beans were tasty but needed another vegetable or SOMETHING. We had been looking forward to going back. That itch is scratched and we can't imagine going out of our way to eat there again. I take my family here often. Personal service (they remember your name after a few visits), along with special dishes off the menu. Ask for Richard's Shrimp. Also, their pot stickers are the best. They are extremely accommodating of special food issues too. My father in law has celiac spru (wheat allergy). When we first moved to the North Shore from Chicago, we kept going to Chinatown for good chinese food. Once we found this family-run gem, however, it became our Chinese restaurant of choice. Twenty years later, and living back in the city, it's still my favorite. They get to know their regulars and truly appreciate your business. Very reasonable lunch specials too. The majority of their business is probably take out it seems, but the customer service is great and friendly for sit down. We generally sit down and have their brewed tea with dinner. If you're looking for some super fancy place, don't bother coming here, but if you want some good, classic, comfort Chinese food, try some of these favorites: Richard's Chicken (not on the menu, but ask and you shall receive! absolutely delightful) Mu Shu Pork (This is fun as it's wrapped up table side.) Mongolian Beef (Kid friendly. When I was a kid, it's all I'd eat.) Pork Fried Rice (no white onions) Crab Rangoon EGG ROLLS Note: Their egg rolls are SO fantastic, they've ruined egg rolls everywhere else for me! Sometimes I swing by and get some to go for a snack when I'm in the area. The chicken lo mein is one of my mom's favorites. Tsing tao is a great place to eat. It's been in wilmette for 33 years I think. So I love food, and my favorite thing to start off a meal is an order of egg rolls. Very crunchy and great flavor. I love to add some sweet and sour sauce to it. I could eat them everyday. ( also a tip order egg drop soup and ask for some crispy noodles and put them in the soup. It's really good.) Now main courses everyone needs to order Richards chicken. It's a lightly battered chicken done in a sweet sauce. It's not on the menu, but order it and you won't be disappointed. My next favorite after that is the Mongolian beef. Add some steamed rice and I'm on my way to heaven. As for drinks I love getting Mai tai they are so good I wish I didn't drive so I could have more than one. Also if you like whiskey they have a couple of choices. Like red label black label, makers mark. I saw a bottle of Jameson black barrel reserve, which I have to try the next time I come to eat dinner. Just had carry-out--wonton soup, mong. beef, shrimp w/lobster sauce. Haven't been here in a while (maybe a year) and something has definitely changed. Soup was watery and there was not a single molecule of meat, pork or shrimp! I don't even think the broth was a chicken broth. We did not order a vegetarian version. Both mains were kind of bland. I rarely add soy, but this stuff needed it. New chef? New economies? Very disappointed because this place was always reliably good [sad face]. read more

This review is only based on one order, so I may try some of the other items some people mentioned another day. What I can say is that my food was delivered very warm (yay) but for a dish that says it's spicy, there was NO HEAT AT ALL. I ordered the Tsing Tao Chicken (per menu has all same stuff as the Cashew Chicken but without cashews and with the addition of red peppers. It was so bland, it almost had no taste. Not even a brown sauce taste. It was pretty dry, and the contents did not seem to have been cooked in a flavored sauce. Another buzz kill was that the chicken was tiny specks, whereas many good Chinese restaurants offer larger pieces of what seem to be high quality chicken (cooked in a yummy sauce!). If the quality of what can be offered is being impacted by what's going on in food delivery chains right now, maybe Tsing Tao should let the people ordering now what's recommended and not their top recommendation based on current product availability. Tsing Tao is the Chinese food of my childhood. Every celebration, milestone, birthday, we chose (and choose) Tsing Tao. Even the rehearsal dinner for our wedding was there. The eggrolls are made fresh, by hand, and are delicious (I've learned many a place buys frozen eggrolls and then fry them). Our favorites include mongolian beef, moo shu beef, lo mein, princess chicken, and lemon chicken. The egg drop soup varies depending on who is cooking that day (sometimes it needs a dash of salt). Three generations of my family love Tsing Tao, and I'm positive we'll take our progeny there. For me it is as close as I've experienced to the mythos of Cheers, everybody knows your name and they are always glad you came. read more

I dined here December 23, 2016. The food and ambiance is classic American - Chinese which I would classify as comfort food. They have all the Chinese food staples you would expect, and a bar with a modest cocktail menu. The quality is value oriented, and the food was OK, nothing extraordinary, and the service was attentive and direct. I appreciated the dated interior, which puts you in somewhat of a time capsule and I argue, goes well with the menu offerings and overall vibe. However, eventually I noticed the cleanliness of the restaurant is poor. The fish tank has scum on the inside, the framed art on the wall has greasy smears, and the ceiling tiles and air vents are caked with dirt. One gets the impression the owner gave up on appearances a long time ago. If they plan to remain for a long time to come, I believe a refresh of the interior should be top priority. Other than that critique, I wouldn't discourage anyone from checking this place out if looking for an old school Chinese restaurant. read more

I have eaten here a few times since it is close to where I work. There are 3 areas that I would like to address. First the service, If I was rating only on service they would get a 4.5 to 5. They are friendly and while they could be in my opinion a bit more personable, they do well in this. Second, the food is mearly average, there is absoutely nothing remotely interesting about the food. I really don't mind the americanized suburban Chinese, but use more fresh vegatables and don't overcook them. Lastly the decor. When you walk in this place you feel like you have a doctors appointment. When you get to the main dining room, it is soo outdated 60-70's that it almost has a quaint kitchy vibe BUT everything is falling apart. They have a white room divider that is missing parts, the seat cushion in my booth was unattached and moved around during the whole meal and they had supply boxes stuffed under some rarely seated tables right out in the open. The owners are really nice people but they need to step up and clean up this place. If it wasn't so convienient to my work I probably would not eat here ever again. read more

And let me tell you, Wilmette is one of those ritzy suburbs, where people are picky,and arrogant. So if you can survive for twenty years you must be doing something right. I mean it is tough to find white table cloths at this price. I know because I have stolen over a dozen and still get compliments. It is tough to do, but well worth an arrest. Anyway, from Beef to Chicken to Ribs to... are the best. They even have top shelf champagne. When you enter Tsing Tao, you will be greeted by two beautiful ladies. No one knows who they are, but they seem to be related to the owners. Look this is the best real deal on the North Shore. And if don't believe me, contact me and I will buy you a beer and then tell you most likely do not live in Wilmette, because you just don't know quality. How does this place not have more stars? My family has been going here for at least 20 years, and I make sure to visit ever time I visit my folks in Wilmette. This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants ever, and hands-down the best for Americanized Chinese. The egg rolls are made in-house and are extremely delicious. The Mongolian beef is a must, and we always enjoy the empress or princess chicken (which are similar to Kung Pao chicken). Their sizzling rice soup and egg drop soup are also notable.
