We first tasted the tempura in a sushi roll and had to get it as an appetizer in our next visit - that was how great it was that a cold tempura shrimp in a roll made us return for more! The sushi rolls are good too. We go for two roll special - I think it is combination A. They are huge and the fish tastes fresh. The restaurant is a bit dark inside and has twinkly fairy lights. Always noticed this sushi place tucked away close to Target and have been meaning to check it out. It was surprisingly a lot bigger inside that I had expected but ordered some sushi to go. Ordered the Kenny roll and dream boat roll. The dream boat roll had a creamy mayo sauce baked on top so each bite was super creamy and saucy in a good way. The Kenny roll also had a good amount of sauce ratio and each bite was so delicious. Both rolls were solid that it made me wanting more. Will definitely try some of their other rolls in the future. The salad dressing was disappointing, but the miso soup was pretty good. The eel Don was also super pretty. Eating the radishes after sushi cleansed my pallette, which I thought was very thoughtful of them. The eel itself had a lot of sauce and isn't super tender, but it was still good. So I'm standing there in front of the restaurant waiting for my food and see at least 10 people walk in and get there food while I'm waiting and trying to keep a 2 year old occupied for an hour while they prepared my meal. After 45 minutes of waiting, I went in and told them to just cancel the order and magically, the food was ready right away. I can only guess they were filling all the Uber Eats and Door Dash orders ahead of a customer that was waiting at the restaurant, just awful. We have had the gluttonous pleasure of gorging on their buffet in the past. For $15, it was yummy and satisfying. The servers were great! They made sure dishes were cleaned off the tables and water glasses filled. There is a large selection of sushi at the buffet. Remember it's a buffet and the food fills your belly! They had Salmon Skin rolls that were better than other dine in locations! I enjoyed my share of those crunchy rolls. This place offers a variety of Japanese dishes; Sushi, udon, ramen, teriyaki, katsu, tempera etc., and to be honest, I've only ever had the sushi and tempura. I've been going here for years (usually for the lunch buffets), and the food has been consistently good. The sushi and the sashimi are fresh, which is definitely what you want in a sushi restaurant. I had read some reviews previous to my order and tried the Rudolph roll; it was quite good and with a little kick. I ordered to pick up and my customer service experience was less great. The front lady was rude and slightly snippy from the start of walking in the door. One of the servers almost ran into me on my way in and although I apologized, she did not reply. I've been going to Tsunami restaurant since I moved into the area in 2018, and have learned to love it. The food is great, with the biggest problem being just making a decision. The menu is vast with not only a wide assortment of dishes, but also numerous ways to enjoy them. Prices are good, relatively speaking. I tend to go there for a late lunch (2:00-3:00), so it's never really crowded. I get excellent service. Only problem I ever had was when I ordered Sukiyaki. I have been able to visit Japan several times and fell in love with Sukiyaki. The first time I ordered, it was excellent. So a few weeks later I took a friend and ordered it again. That time, not so excellent. I asked the waitress about it and was told they have two chefs, one really good at Sukiyaki and one...not so much. Kinda wish they had mentioned that. But it was okay, just not great. Tsunami has now become a regular lunch place for meeting special friends for an enjoyable dining experience. read more

Okay..i"ll be honest... Tsunami deserves a 3.5 and the here's is why. 1 Sushi roll matters and that is the Oyster Roll. Deep fried oyster, cucumber and fish roe. Okay I'll admit $5.50 for 6 rolls and your getting half a piece of oyster in each piece of the roll. But its the perfect bite. My cousin had one of my pieces and after he tried it he had to order 2 more rolls because it was that good. Other rolls that we tried that were just okay were the spider roll, rainbow roll, California roll, Chameleon roll and a spicy tuna roll. All just tasted like the usually do just generic nothing special. We also ordered. Beef teriyaki which came with miso soup and a side salad. The beef was tender but really chewy...teriyaki sauce was a bit too sweet for me. The salad the ginger dressing wasn't too bad not watered down like it usually is at some restaurants. Overall..Tsunami deserves 3.5 only for the Oyster Roll. Without it probably wouldn't get so much praise from me. Service was okay. Rolls took a while to come out though. I can only speak for takeout as i Door Dashed a meal from here. I checked the prices on the app against the ones on their website and the difference wasn't that great. When I can I like to order directly from the restaurant than through a third party app but this time wasn't big deal. I got the salmon lover combo which was pretty good despite the travel. I will say I think it's a bit pricey but since it's in a popular shopping center it's not surprising. I know that getting Japanese food to-go already lowers the quality compared to eating it freshly made in the restaurant, so I won't comment on that. What I am peeved about is that the kabuki roll is described as "shrimp tempura, crab, avocado and cucumber" - I shouldn't have, but I did expect real lump crab. Not the imitation crab. That should be specified on the menu. Sushi was decent, nothing spectacular. Ramen was not good. Noodles were clumped together from the takeout - I have had good homemade ramen takeout before that didn't turn into a pasty mush when I brought it home. Broth was not the typical ramen broth I was expecting - it was watered down and doesn't have that richness you'd expect from a good bowl of ramen. The toppings: a regular hard boiled egg placed inside without much thought, some measly strands of boiled spinach and bean sprouts. Not an authentic Japanese place - I can tell they're owned by Koreans. Overall, it's decent for takeout if you have a Japanese food craving. Two soup options and just a wide variety of sushi and some sides. My concern was that none of the dishes, except for miso soup and veggie tempura had name cards. There are vegetarian sushi options, but you carefully need to look for it. The waitresses were kind and help you with anything you need. Their buffet has no deserts. You need to purchase them separately. Mediocre sushi, good service. Buffet is priced at $15.99 per person which I think is pretty pricey for what you get. I have a lot of respect for this establishment. I have visited it many times over the years. The atmosphere is cozy for a little sushi place. The staff is very friendly. They make a point to see how I have been and remember me each time I visit. The food is fresh and delicious. There is an option for buffet lunch. Keep in mind that buffets will always loose a bit in quality. I have not seen a buffet that does not take a tiny hit in quality since the food is not prepared for you and waits in the window for the taking. Keeping that in mind, I thought it was absolutely delicious! Plus I appreciate that even at 2:15 with buffet closing at 2:30 they are still making fresh sushi and ensuring all the stations are refilled. If you are visiting the establishment for the first time, I recommend trying the Tsunami Roll and avoiding the buffet so you experience the quality. If you are ok with buffet definitely go for it! I am extremely picky with where I get my sushi from. I'm a huge fan of miyagi in McLean but decided to give this place a try since it's close to my house. I'm really glad I did because their sushi is phenomenal! My friend and I got the tuna and salmon sashimi along with a baked salmon roll. Everything was so delicious! The salmon and tuna was so fresh tasting and the baked roll was also very good too. The only thing I didn't like about the baked roll was that it came with some mayo (I think) on top of the rolls and it was a bit much. I will probably opt out of the mayo next time I go. This place is insane. My friend took me on a Monday night, and there was no wait. Totally unassuming on the outside, and I would have missed it if he didn't point it out, but the inside is very cute! He's been here before and recommended getting mostly nigiri, so we got a bunch of different things: different cuts of salmon, eel, yellowtail, etc. He definitely knew what he was taking about, the fish to rice ratio was beautiful with thick slices of fish and little balls of perfectly seasoned sushi rice underneath. We also ordered a Kenny roll which was delicious too! It is kinda pricey, but I think good quality sushi has to be pricey so it's definitely justified.
