Cool to visit but probably will not come back. Let's start with service - very weird. They have a text option available on Google so I ask how long the wait time is for 2 people (Monday night). No response ever, but no biggie. I go in person and get added to the waitlist and am told it's about ten minutes. I come back after ten mins and getting the alert, only for the waiter who added me to the waitlist to look at me like I came from a different planet and as if we did not speak only ten minutes ago. Had to re explain how he already added me to the waitlist and I got the text. Don't know why he was so confused. Then we got served water, had a hair in it so we got another cup. Then we ordered and another table sat next to us who seemed like friends of the same amnesiac waiter. We waited about 25 mins for everything in the photo including the appetizer and somehow the table that came after us (his friends) received everything within 5 mins despite sitting/ordering 10 mins after us. When the curry kurage arrived, they had the spoon handle completely submerged in the curry so we had to ask for another one. Waved down the amnesiac and he said "oh yeah I saw that, let me get you another one." If you saw the spoon was unusable, why did you wait for us to wave you down? Service aside, the curry tasted very inauthentic. Was watery and tasteless. The creamy udon was also kind of mid. Tamago was alright, but mixing all of these intense flavors was interesting - gave us both stomach aches. read more

Ttan is a great spot for a good lunch deal. Around $20 gets you plenty of food. The décor is cute and playful. They apparently have a self-serve sake vending machine, which I somehow missed but it sounds pretty cool. If you are dining solo, they will most likely seat you at what looks like a bar - though they don't serve alcohol here, so it functions more like a designated spot for parties of one. I honestly was not a big fan of that setup. Of note, service was really friendly. As for the food, I ordered the gyudon. It was a delicious beef bowl in a sweet and savory sauce, served over rice. The lunch came with soup and five small side dishes. I wasn't familiar with some of the sides. I could identify pumpkin, tofu, and pickled vegetables among the mix. Overall, 4 stars for the gyudon, cute decor, and pleasant service. read more

I came across this quaint izakaya while scrolling "hot and new" on Yelp, took one look at their mentaiko egg bites and chirashi don and booked it to LIC the first free afternoon I had. To my slight disappointment, these and several other dishes I was excited about are not served on their lunch menu. While their lunch menu felt somewhat limited, what I did have felt filling, flavorful, and beautifully plated so I will definitely have to return for dinner soon. I was in Japan several months ago and can attest the ambience here matches many of the restaurants you'd find in Tokyo or Osaka. Some folks trickled in for take out but my friend and I were only one of 3 occupied tables on the Thursday afternoon I visited, and so the food came out pretty quickly. For lunch, they focus on rice sets. I enjoyed the karaage rice, which came with miso soup and some tiny accoutrements, like kabocha squash, radish slices, spinach, and tomago (egg). We also ordered their tofu and eggplant appetizers. Like many other Japanese dishes, the flavors here are somewhat subtle, which is nice because you end the meal feeling sated but not heavy. Their beverage selection felt limited which I think is a missed opportunity but I see that they are focusing on just a few menu items right now. I wish they served more of their menu during the day but I will definitely be returning, specifically for their mentaiko egg. read more

I ordered a chirashi don for $29 during lunch and a cucumber rice is what I received. I understand that quality might not be the same as the uber eats pictures but this has like 5 tiny fish pieces in it. This is ridiculous for the price I paid. read more

Came during soft opening and everything was pretty good. Some items ran out but I'm assuming things have been sorted out since then. Ttan is always packed. Highlights are any of the apps, calling out the truffle tofu and mentaiko tamagoyaki. Still need to try the beef tendon and daikon with high hopes. The miso soy milk udon was different in a good way. Excited to try the shrimp mentaiko udon and karaage curry next. Unagi don and premium donburi is exactly as it sounds. Nothing too crazy, probably wouldn't get these items again. Wanted to try the warabi mochi but they were out so we got the ice cream cake, which is more like a flan pudding but creamier with a subtle sweetness. The top is super fine crumbly texture. Good as an Asian not-too-sweet dessert but not as satisfying as ice cream or cake if you know what I mean. read more

The donburi is fresh and flavorful, but not very filling/not much protein, even though it was the premium one; it was a bit disappointing that it is actually mostly rice. Highly recommend getting dinner reservations if you have a party of more than 2 people (otherwise you'll just be seated at the bar counter). Met a friend here for dinner and seeing this place on social media! I tried the chirashi bowl and the fish was very fresh. My friend got the sushi set and she said it was very good (the rice is also seasoned with soy sauce so you don't need extra). Service was very good - everyone was friendly and attentive. Shared the plum ramune tomato, kaarage, and miso soymilk udon. Plum ramune tomato was creative and a good dish for the hot weather. The kaarage was one of the better kaarages I've had in a while, juicy and tender with a crispy batter. Paired well with the mayo sauce. I went yesterday to TTAN, though I know this place opened about a month ago. Since it's only a block away from me, I decided to try my luck with a walk-in. On a random Thursday night, the wait was about 30 minutes, which honestly wasn't too bad. The staff were all very kind and welcoming. The space itself is on the smaller side, but they manage to fit quite a few people comfortably. The menu is also relatively compact, which actually helped me since I'm super indecisive. I ordered: - Mentaiko Tamagoyaki ($9) - Creamy Shrimp Mentaiko Udon ($21) - TTAN Signature ($38) - Brown Sugar Warabi Mochi ($6) The mentaiko tamagoyaki was really good. I loved the sauce and how neatly everything was presented. The creamy shrimp mentaiko udon was definitely the standout for me. The shrimp were cooked well, and the dish itself was warm, comforting, and tasted incredibly homey. It's something I'd absolutely order again. The TTAN Signature was good too, though the portion was smaller than I expected for the price. Same with the dessert. The brown sugar warabi mochi was definitely smaller than anticipated, but the flavor was delicious. The brown sugar taste weirdly brought me back to childhood memories for some reason. Overall, I'd definitely come back. The location is super convenient for me, the staff are lovely, and the atmosphere makes it an easy neighborhood spot to return to. read more

TTAN has such a fun retro vibe. The whole space feels playful and nostalgic without trying too hard. From the decor to the little details, it made the dining experience feel extra memorable. Everything we tried was honestly really solid. The mentaiko udon was probably my favorite -- super creamy, smoky, and packed with umami. You can really taste the torching on some of the dishes, which added a nice depth of flavor instead of just feeling gimmicky. The tamago appetizer was simple but so good, especially with that lightly torched smoky finish. The TTAN signature set was also great value for the quality. The fish tasted fresh, the portions were satisfying, and it was a nice way to try a variety of pieces in one order. Came for lunch on a weekend and highly recommend a reservation - this place gets busy! Their lunch menu/special was a delight! We ordered their premium set with the different sashimis which was super tasty. The little side plates that were included were a nice touch. The chilled eggplant was good - unsure if I would have gotten it if I knew it was going to be included in the side plates. The sashimi tarts were disappointing though, super small and bland unfortunately - would not order again and not work $12. Japanese cuisine in a spot of LIC I hardly hit up. TTAN was giving all the izakaya vibes. The bathroom glowed red and was spotless. The staff were attentive and gracious. But the food, the food was the star of the show. And their lunch special comes with so much. You get a tasting of different sides with your main. My main was the Gyudon and it was phenomenal. The rice and beef were season perfectly. The favs out of the sides were the eggplant and, surprisingly, I loved the truffle tofu. I would definitely one back for dinner! I came here with a group of friends to try out some of their food. The waitress was polite and took our order. We got the chilled ponzu Celtuce $8, chilled eggplant $7, shrimp mentaiko udon $21, karraage curry rice $18, and the seafood donburi $23. The presentation was beautiful for all dishes and they all generally tasted good. My personal favorite was the seafood donburi, although the salmon cut was a bit smaller than expected. Just found out that this place had opened this week! We went for lunch, and there were limited menu items - no appetizers or additional sides. They were also out of the gyudon when we came an hour opening. The server said that they will be adding more menu items and more stock and was only limited to not overwhelm the staff! Would come back for dinner and when they add more menu items. The food was great, and I loved the sides they provided. The sides came with spinach, egg (tamago), pumpkin, radish, and eggplant. We also got the braised beef tendon and karaage curry rice lunch sets. I wish the amount of food was bigger, but it was still delicious. The restaurant itself was cute. Not sure if they were having issues for the soft opening but the udon took so much longer than the other mains, everyone else in my group was done eating by the time we got the udon. When it did come, both bowls of udon were pretty overcooked. They did offer us free dessert because of the wait, but the fact that they didn't acknowledge how long the udon was taking until we asked multiple times on the status was tough. I hope they figure out the bumps for the full opening but after waiting for over a half hour for overcooked udon, I was kind of disappointed. read more

What a disappointing experience - we left utterly dismayed. The restaurant was out of many menu items tonight, our server submitted the wrong order, and we waited so long for the correct dish that we nearly canceled it altogether. The food left on the table was equally lacking in bussing service since when the server came by to refill our water, the empty bowl from our finished unagi don was ignored not once, but twice. As for the food itself, the unagi don was genuinely good, but the shrimp mentaiko udon was pretty saucy that we wished it had come with a spoon and some bread to mop it up (otherwise, equally good). To their credit, the server apologized for the limited menu and offered us a shot of sake (and later on, dessert) on the house. We declined both -- we don't drink, and by that point we weren't in the mood for dessert. I do want to give the server the benefit of the doubt, since serving is a tough job, but it's hard to overlook a wrong order, a poorly bussed table, and a final bill with nothing comped or discounted, especially when our displeasure was obvious throughout the meal. I just don't think the service was up to par since your customers shouldn't be leaving so disappointed. Overall, the staff came across as inexperienced and the prices felt steep for what we got. Grand opening troubles, indeed. read more
