Unfortunately, my latest experience was such a letdown that I have to average that into this review. My usual order here over 10+ years has always been their Kaisen Don, which had some of the better quality sushi rice available in Queens. If you don't think sushi rice is important, then skip my review. If you do, then know that my preference is slight warm rice that does not clump together, with a nice touch of vinegar. Hibino seems to get this part right regularly, but not this past Sunday. It was cold, clumpy, and super light on seasoning. Furthermore, as soon as the bowl arrived, I was a bit skeptical since it's not the usual square box filled with premium goodies. Instead, it was a smaller round bowl with relatively common pieces of sashimi. In the past, there were toro, ikura, uni and scallop, but none were present on Sunday. The only premium pieces I received was the spotted prawn. The rest were salmon, yellowtail, bluefin tuna, sea bass, and arctic char. More importantly, some of the sashimi pieces were somewhat mushy and slightly fishy, not the best quality. On the other hand, we also ordered their Chirashi, which had seared toro, yellowfin tuna, salmon belly, yellowtail belly, shrimp, and flying fish roe. Between the proteins and rice is a layer of shredder egg. Sadly, rice was still cold and lacked flavor, but the egg did help a bit. Though I prefer the thin slices of sashimi in the Kaisen Don over the chunky pieces of fish in the Chirashi, I did prefer the latter on that day. Bottom line, I will give them another chance, but the downgrade on the quality of rice and premium seafood in the Kaisen Don was a major disappointment. We picked for the entire table Omakase with the uni upgrade and fatty tuna with scallions and ikura. The appetizer did not seemed appealing. As we want to just have raw fish-no cooked protein. The size was small, good quality fish, the uni was sweet, the toro was good for the price. We got the upgraded omakase for $63 per person and it was worth it. Hibino is one of my favourite restaurants in LIC. I love that they offer their lunch specials even on weekends. I always order their "obento box", which comes with a choice of an entrée from their daily-rotating list (so cute how they write them on a few chalkboards that they move around the restaurant for whoever's ordering). Everything I've ordered has always been delicious, from the various fish dishes (salmon / arctic char are particular favourites), the stir-fried pork, and their sushi rolls. The salad is invariably so fresh, and the small side of obanzai is always a treat :) Price point is unparalleled -- I think the bento was priced at $12 when I first came a few years ago, and it's still $12 now. Such a lovely cute restaurant -- service is fast and friendly, and the interior, while a bit small, is definitely very cosy and has that unique rustic Japanese aesthetic to it (including a lot of their tableware). Was in the area with some friends and decided to grab a late lunch. We weren't the only ones enjoying a late lunch. The service was friendly and efficient. We comfortably sat at the center communal table. We got a couple rolls to share, and we each got a different seafood donburi. The Kyoto Style Futomaki had a great balance of flavors. The rice and seaweed held together well considering the size of the roll. The Negitoro Roll had good quality tuna and crisp scallions. It was a good ratio of ingredients. I opted for the Harasu Don (Torched Salmon Belly), which came with a miso soup and salad. The Miso Soup had one big chunk of tofu. It had good miso flavor. The Salad had crisp greens and a salty sour dressing, maybe salted plum? I enjoyed it as I like that flavor. The Harasu Don had a good amount of salmon atop shredded egg and rice. The salmon was lightly torched and fresh. The egg added texture to the dish. The rice was seasoned well, and they give a lot! After a failed adventure at nearby Culture Lab where the overpriced "Fest" vendors weren't cutting it I suggested to my friends that we grab lunch at this place. It was a solid choice that I believe we were all happy with. We all opted for chirashi or don for our meals and ordered a couple of rolls to supplement. The negitoro roll were a treat with fatty pieces of tuna in nicely seasoned rice. The Kyoto Style Futomaki is a crowd pleaser generously stuffed with tuna, shrimp and eel - it really hit the spot. I had the chirashi and could not be happier with my assortment of sashimi floating on nicely seasoned rice. The fish laid on a bed of shredded egg, which I've never really seen before, but it added good sweetness and flavor to entire dish. The service was efficient and friendly despite it being a one person show. She deftly handled the lunchtime crowd. I am going high with a full five stars because Hibino is type of sushi/Japanese spot I believe is becoming harder to find in NYC. This Japanese restaurant has been on my list for a while, so I was excited to finally check it out--especially since my friend was in the area and suggested we go. I had bookmarked it a while ago and was curious to see if it lived up to the hype. The vibe was great and it definitely had that cozy, local vibe. We ordered a solid mix to really get a feel for the menu: the Blue Crab Roll, Hamachi Salad, Beef Kakuni entrée, the Hibino Sashimi Plate, and for dessert, we split the Taiyaki and Zenzai with green tea ice cream. The Blue Crab Roll was fresh, and the Hamachi Salad was very light. The Beef Kakuni was super tender and comforting, kind of like a cozy bowl of rich, slow-cooked goodness. "I don't think that word means what you think it means..." So when it came to reading and writing about places I've eaten and visited, someone will inevitably abuse the word "authentic" which is wielded by the unimaginative alongside inane cliches "diamond in the rough" or "hidden gem". Every time I see that I wonder just what was the intent of using it, and do you actually mean what you think it says? Both me and the missus love the concept of Japanese breakfast teishoku (定食) set meals - broiled cured fish, raw egg on rice, pickles and miso soup and ate plenty while in Japan, but I can literally count on a single hand the number of places in NYC that can serve one up, and unlike Japan where it's ~4 to 600 yen at any given Shinpachi or Nakau Shokudo within the 47 prefectures, you are looking at 35 bucks per person at 4 places in Greenpoint/Billieburg - the flipside of transplanting an experience away from its origin is an inflated price tag. So, how many truly authentic Japanese restaurants are there in NYC? Does the crew say "Irasshaimase" when you walk through the door, hand you an Oshibori to wipe your hands down before you eat, serve you an otoshi (a table charge appetizer) upon sitting down, refer to their set menus as teishoku and serve up roasted meats without referring to it as teriyaki (the term is not all that common in Japan outside of fast food burger joints). The guy cooking the items will likely be closer in origin to Ciudad Hidalgo or Hangzhou than Hachioji but it's attention to detail that sells an experience. Even Japanese owned and managed places like Acre, Machida shoten, Ootoya or Menkoi Sato will change their practices once stateside and adopt to local tastes and customs, either out of local cultural considerations or a matter of practicality. So, that out of the way, is Hibino authentic? Well, it's definitely a place serving Japanese cuisine in LIC (just like Sushi-of-Miso down the block), but it's certainly not one that transports you to Naka ward in Hiroshima or Meguro in Tokyo - so it's authentically a typical NYC place serving Japanese cuisine. In fact, I would argue that the other sushi place serves up fresher nigiri based on the 2 pieces of Tamagoyaki Nigiri that I ordered as an appetizer - the rice was cold and so was the egg. Then there's the bento that me and the missus had on Saturday - for me it was sliced pork in a black vinegar sauce (not quite kuro-su an teishoku like ones served at Ootoya) but it tastes more like Shogayaki but without ginger. For the missus it was the miso broiled mackerel, which didn't tastes like it came off a fish broiler. The obanzai was a bit...lacking, and the tsukemono (pickles) felt like it was just a bunch of white kimchi - the dressing for the green lettuce based salad was shisho based and there were flakes of ume on the rice. I mean, for 13 bucks it was inexpensive, but it was kinda low on the value-for-money-or-interest scale. If you compare the offerings here versus their Brooklyn Heights location, it felt a bit...short. Paying 40 USD on a weekend brunch here for 2 on a Saturday afternoon isn't bad per-se, just...*meh*. So yeah...it's okay, I guess. Not terrible but also not the best Japanese cuisine in the area. If I want something that feels like a teishoku in Shibuya I'll hit Ootoya in midtown, but if I want something cheap and tastes Japanese...eeeeh, Ashbox on the other side of the bridge? read more

We wanted good quality sushi and I was so glad I found this place. The food here is phenomenal and the prices are very reasonable! I had the kaisen-don and the fish was so fresh!! I enjoyed every bite. The fish was good quality and you can upgrade and add uni or Ikura or both. I added the uni and it was so good. We also had the Agedashi tofu and that was also delicious! I ordered the Hibino Chirashi with the shrimp shumai. The chirashi was fresh and the flavors were decadent! I was a bit unsure about the shredded egg at first, but it ended up being one of my favorite additions to the dish! The rice was seasoned well and the portion was respectable! Food and service was outstanding. We tried the fresh tofu and edamame for our starters. The fresh tofu came in a jar and was served with scallions, ginger and soy-dashi sauce. I have never experienced tofu like this and it was amazing! We proceeded to order 5 different sushi rolls starting with the panko-crusted eel roll off of the special list. It was incredibly crunchy and the ingredients were fresh. At the conclusion of our meal, we were offered dessert and then complimentary hot tea. The ambiance was upbeat and chill. Solid spot in the neighborhood for sushi! The place is on the smaller side so it might be wise to make a reservation if you can. We ended up sitting on the counter off to the side and it was a wee bit cramped so that would ideally be avoided with a reservation! We got: - kamo salad 6/10: while it looks appetizing in photos, the duck was too tough and just didn't taste fresh. - hibino sashimi plate 9/10: i thought it was a pretty good portion and the quality of the fish seemed great. There were many empty seats and they said most tables have reservations. They ended up seating me and my dining companion at the center communal table which had terrible stool seats. It was uncomfortable but we made do. Hibino is still a solid place to go to for Japanese flavors. The food is Japanese home style and it is priced appropriate for what you get. Great sushi in a nice ambiance albeit a bit rushed. My bf and I came at 7pm on a Friday night - we were able to call ahead for a reservation the same night. We both had the $40 omakase course and thoroughly enjoyed! The only caveat is that it doesn't come out piece by piece like a normal omakase, it comes out all at once. In my opinion this detracted from the experience bc we ended up finishing our sushi pretty quickly. Regardless the fish was fresh and rice was cooked well though it was a tad too acidic for my taste.
