That gas leaks are only consistent and would not happen only when it was hot. We were told that we must be wrong. We felt like we were going crazy. Until we called Bay Area Water Heaters and Dave came out (with a whole crew). He took the time to inspect our heater and said yes, this slight gas smell on hot days is something he had heard of. It was likely due to an old valve within the control panel. He walked us through our options but ultimately suggested replacing the entire heater. His team was able to do the job right then and there and at a reasonable rate. It was completed within the hour. And sure enough, no more gas smell in our garage. I understand that cancellations impact a schedule, so I remained completely calm and polite throughout the conversation and paid their full cancellation fee immediately without hesitation or dispute. Despite complying with their policy right away, the owner became hostile. He lost his temper, raised his voice, and berated me for how much the cancellation hurt his business. A cancellation fee is meant to cover lost time--it is not a license to yell at and lecture paying customers who are speaking respectfully. Handling ordinary business interactions with this level of aggression and emotional volatility is completely unacceptable. I would strongly advise against dealing with an owner who treats customers this way.

I had a very easy experience getting an on-site quote. I received 3 quotes for this job. 2 quotes, including this one, came in around $7100. I went with a third one at around $6700 (which included an additional mixing valve) and am very happy with my decision. Overall price was not a big part of my decision, but brand of water heater was. After doing some research online, the most recommended brands are AO Smith and Rheem (GE). Both higher quotes were for Navien, which has only been making heat pump water heaters for 1 year, but I was told that it is the most reliable brand. I did not understand how this claim could be made, given how short the duration of evaluation for this product. Even the worst appliances usually work for at least a year. So I requested a quote for AO Smith or Rheem, which I did not get. I'm not sure why my brand request was not honored, but it made me question whether I should go with a company that either has communication issues or maybe some type of deal with Navien that I was not informed about. Many water heater installers are preferred installers of certain brands, which means they can get better pricing, etc. I did not want to be a guinea pig for Navien.

Not only did they not listen to my needs, the whole time they offered solutions that cater to what they want instead of what I want. 1. They recommend dual zoning which cost about the same amount as installing a new mini split. I have a single state HVAC which isn't recommended for dual zone install. 2. They keep pushing for fixing/upgrading central instead of installing mini splits. 3. They keep asking for my budget (red flag), talking up high end units (red flag), talking down low end units (red flag). Look, we all know Mitsubishi and Daikin are the top of the line. However, the cost of DOUBLE of the price of lower end models isn't due to just superior quality and technology. Heat pumps and mini splits are not new technology. One isn't vastly superior to another. Yes, it may be better, but not double the price better. The cost are always due to the commissions and kickbacks for these installers. That's marketing and salesmanship, but please be more transparent next time. Finally, I asked for quotes and options so I can decide. The person walked away disappointed and I suspect they think they lost a sale because of the way I did not want the highest end models and stayed firm with my mini split request. I sensed the guy walked away disappointed. Yet I still expected a courtesy quote like the other installers. They never sent it. I was not surprised. In the end, I decided that a whole system upgrade to mini-splits (30% more efficient just from being ductless alone) with rebates made more sense instead of add ons to existing system.
