Food was good, had the steak (bistec) because there was a limited menu and we were told the only options were those on the serving line. Had the choice of chicken, steak, white rice, morro, pinto or black beans, potato salad or regular salad. We were told they also had empanadas so I got a steak and a beef one. Empanadas were ok, not worth the money at $5 each but ok. I was looking for more honestly after reading the menu I was ready for some true Dominican food. Ambiance is still under way, as it came off as somewhat of a cafeteria style but in transition. What a gem of a restaurant! I came in with my ethnic dinner club and we all loved our food and experience! I was raving about how much I love tequeños (Latin version of a fried cheese stick) and before I knew it one of the ladies brought us 4 on the house! I was blown away. How kind! We tried a variety of foods: Dominican version of an empanada Venezuelan version of an empanada Corn pancake with cheese (cachapas) Arepa (corn cake stuffed with beef or chicken) Ham and cheese stuffed bread (I can't remember the name) All of it was very tasty! My favorites were the arepa with beef and cheese --the garlic sauce on the side is amazing, the Donovan empanada and the tequeños. At Tu Casa Latin Food, you'll find a mix of Puerto Rican, Venezuelan, and Dominican cuisine. From mofongo to empanadas, they've got it. The front case features all of the food so you can get a peek before ordering. They offer two types of rices and two types of beans. The arepas are soooojuicy!!! They give a lot in the soup but I forgot to take a pic when I first started it. The arepas are super full the outside is delicious!!! The chicken & rice is YUMMY!! The passion fruit juice is super good. Everyone who works there is so kind. The pollo (chicken) and the carne (beef) empanadas are super good too. WOW this food is amazing. First of all, a Dominican AND a Venezuelan restaurant...and in Indianapolis as opposed to Miami or something? WOW, y'all, we are lucky to be blessed with this place. It's in the corner of a strip mall across from Fay Biccord Community Center. Large parking lot. and right off of 71st & Michigan. When you walk in, they have food already prepared that you can order from (almost cafeteria style) or you can put in an order for something more elaborate that might not be prepared, depending on the menu and daily specials. Someone was concerned in a review about English/Spanish capabilities. Don't worry. My Spanish is meh these days, so I ordered in English. The two workers understood me just fine. I could tell Spanish is their first language, and they appreciated it when I used a bit of Spanish - it's important to try to speak someone's language when you are their guest (if you can), ya know? I was so excited to order popular cuisines from both cultures: Mofongo with chicken (Dominican) and an arepa with beef (Venezuelan). I also got fried sweet plaintains. First of all, WOW WHAT AN EXPLOSION OF FLAVOR on that Arepa! The meat was full of sauce and it did a party in my mouth. An arepa is basically like a sandwich - it looks like a pita stuffed with meat, except its made with corn instead of grain. Price is about $6-something. The mofongo was great. This is plantains fried and mashed, and then formed into a ball. 6 or so pieces of chicken on the bone were included, along with a salad. It had a great taste to it. Price is about $12/$13. The fried sweet plantains were maybe $6 as well. Good! Not as sweet as some other places (like Havana Cafe), which may appeal to some folks. I will DEFINITELY return for an arepa many times in the future. Other tips: - credit or cash is fine - water is only in a bottle, so bring your own or be prepared to pay for a drink - dining area is about 6-7 tables - family friendly - menu has words in both spanish and english - menu doesn't list prices so ASK. We tried this little Latin restaurant on recommendations from Yelp on a Thursday. They feature Dominican and Venezuela cuisine. Ordering was confusing. The menus and signs were in Spanish which I can generally work through but I had no clue. The server did not speak English. The sign outside said lunches were $8.99 so we incorrectly assumed that the options on the cafeteria style were included. I ordered a slow cooked beef stew with a side salad and rice and beans. We also ordered water and received a bottle of Costco water. The beef was very good with a mix of spices and vegetables. The rice and beans were excellent. The salad was simple iceberg lettuce with a slice of tomato. The meal overall was good. They have about 10 tables for dine in but it looked like most people ordered carry out. We stayed in. My bill came to $14. I guess the beef was not part of the lunch special. My recommendation is to bring someone fluent in Spanish to help with ordering. read more

What a great little place! I happened to wonder upon this place always looking for new types of food. When asked that said it's Latin food. The person who served me was from Cuba. They have a cafeteria style where they have made things for the day and you pick what you want. I got rice, a amazing chicken, and a salad. The chicken was full off the bone. This is a tiny treasure hidden away in the corner of a little strip mall. I'm going to be honest, I found this place by mistake. I was parked a few spots down from there front door headed to another restaurant, but they were closed. I saw the sign and their open sign and decided to look them up on yelp. The reviews seem good and I'm pretty adventurous so I decided to go in. It is a small space with a food counter and a cash register on one end. There is a white board with the days offerings written on it. When I arrived I saw one lady in the kitchen doing dishes. Shortly later another lady came out to help me. She walked me though everything they had that day, and I got my order to go. We tried the chicken empanadas, plantains, potato salad, pork with potato, and beans and rice. This place used to be 5 stars but now I would give it zero if possible. The empanadas are tasty but the service is lousy. If you come in for empanadas they are rarely ready and you're told may be ready in 30-45 minutes. Asked about coffee but no coffee even though they have 4 machines. So we left for coffee elsewhere. When we came back 45 minutes later we had chunky beef empanadas instead of shredded beef...the only thing shredded in our empanadas was the metal which looks like it is from a pot scrubbing sponge. The weekend before we drove from Brownsburg and they told us they didn't have any empanadas that day. This was around noon. It's too bad because we've brought family when they've visited from Venezuela and we all enjoyed it. I am so happy that I found this restaurant. In my hometown of Fort Wayne we had a restaurant that was very similar they ended up moving away. When my mom called telling me about Tu Casa and how similar the menu was I had to try it for myself. Don't be fooled by the plaza. It is kind of hidden beside the Dairy Queen and the parking lot is a little rough. When I arrived I was nervous there would be a language barrier, but there is two younger ladies that speak english. Once I tried to pronounce the chicken dish I wanted she knew exactly what I was talking about. It is called Pollo Guisado and it has a red sauce. It also comes with rice and beans. I swear this dish was so good I came back the next week to get it again. My little sister loves it too so this will definitely be one of our new favorite spots. *UPDATE* we came back to this place because one of our favorite food trucks 'winters' here - Gula's Venezuelan food truck - because of this it's now a definite recommendation. But you need to follow Gula's on instagram and figure out when they are taking over in the restaurant. We went on a Friday evening after 7:00pm. I give Gula's a solid 5 star, the portions are plentiful, the food is fresh and very tasty and a good value. If you get the burgers be prepared to leave full and the arepas are to die for. Different cook or cutting corners. My first review a couple of years ago was that this food was just as good or even better than my mom's Dominican food. Today I was disappointed. First they had no beef dishes except meatballs which I didn't want. They switched to smaller containers/portions and there was barely a small ice cream scooper full of potato salad left but they charged me full price for a side of it. The beans were watery and sour and the yucca tasted like a bottle of vinegar too. Price: It's a bit pricey (they aren't listed, which is ... odd.... but they will tell you the price if you ask) but it's food using ingredients that are local to DR Vzla and Colombia so I expected that hike in price. Food was great, customer service wasn't. First time I visited the lady kept interrupting my transaction by responding her personal phone number. She had an awful customer service; kind of expecting me to know the taste and flavor of the food as if I had tried it before when I stated I've never had it. Overpriced because she charge even for the water, she doesn't even have a soda machine or anything like that so she's charging for water bottles. Second time I visited this establishment, food was good but nobody was there so could place an order and I waited a moment for somebody to order my food. Today, I decided to give them one more chance. They closed at 8.... I arrived at 7:25pm, when I pulled up the lights were on. I went to open the door, the lights were turned off. Where to start? I found this restaurant in my searches on YELP. The restaurant itself is about as big as my living room with 6 tables. It is in a small strip mall on 71st just west of Michigan Rd next to the Dairy Queen. Walking in is a little confusing. I wasn't sure if I should take a seat or proceed to the cash register. A voice from the back told me "just a minute". When the nice lady came up front, I found her English to be about as good as my Spanish. Luckily, a Spanish speaking customer came in and translated for me, but I think I could have made it through eventually. The menu had daily specials as well as a la cart items. The specials change daily. The specials are already prepared and in warming dishes next to the cash register. Specials are listed in the menu as $8.99. I ordered the chicken special. This included 3 stewed, skinless chicken legs in sauce, rice, choice of 2 beans, small lettuce and tomato salad and a bottled water. The chicken was moist and tender with a tasty but not spicy sauce. The beans were seasoned mildly and the rice was cooked perfectly. Nothing fancy, just good homemade food. I dined in but others came in a got take out. There was only 1 other couple there eating various a la carte items and saying complimentary things. After I finished I went to the cash register to pay, the lady that served me stated that on Monday through Thursday the lunch specials were only $6. What? Saw an ad for this place on Yelp looking for close Caribbean food. I wanted so bad to drive to Jamaican reggae grill for oxtails, but rush hour traffic was horrible. Needed something closer. Usually don't bother with restaurants with Yelp ads but there were some good reviews. I got there about an hour from closing so the pickings were slim. Got the pernil with white rice, black beans and sweet plantains. Also got an order of chicharonnes de puerco to go. The pork and sides were delicious. When I got home I tried one of the chicha's.... OMG. Should have just. Ordered. That. Seemed like family all gathered near the end of the day, hanging out. Super friendly, made sure to ask how the food was. Pretty sure when the customer is silent, sending bragging photos to friends and nearly cleans the plate. It's pretty good. Would like to try it at lunch. I took my wife here on Mother's Day and we didn't even order three plates of food but somehow it came out to be $49. I feel that I was definitely overcharged but didn't make a big stink about it. It is hard to place an order in a mask, but the person taking our order assumed we did not speak Spanish and called over a customer and another person to take our order. Tasty food. Storefront type Mom and Pop restaurant. Although Yelp has images of their menu, there were none on hand when we asked for one. They showed us their posted board which listed menu items but this was only minimally useful to a non-Latina reader. They did have us look over the selections of the day and translated the dishes with just a bit of difficulty. It would be super helpful if they could keep a menu for "Gringos," however we managed. Empanadas were our favorite. Meats were good but basic. Had the meat had more sauce/juice it would have helped the entirely plain white rice.
