After reading the reviews, I feel like the kid in the Emperors New Clothes. I've eaten at plenty hole-in-the-wall authentic Mexican places with food that was super-flavorful and awesome. I had hoped that Tu y Yo would be such an establishment. Sadly, everything our table of 7 people ordered was bland and unexciting and just not worth the time or money spent there. We've been hearing good things about Tu y Yo for a long time, and finally made it over for dinner. Terrific food! I got the Bisteca (the 1930 version), and my wife got the Mole pollo blanco. Both were fantastic. Nice atmosphere, and I like that all the recipes were family ones, passed down for our enjoyment. My only complaint is that the lemonade is very obviously just made from a powder. Don't bother with it. **We went back again, this time for brunch. This is the only real Mexican place until you get to NYC (and they only have 2 that I know of). The food is simple, regional cooking (and not exactly peasant food either). And sorry to disappoint, but there is no cheese to be seen. No nachos, no tacos, no burritos, no chulupas or any other crap that taco bell and 99% of the Mexican places around here serve. And sticking with the "simple", the dishes only have a few ingredients in them --the way Mexicans actually eat (as well as 90% of the world for that matter). A few "fresh" ingredients at that --except for the occasional imported Mexican pepper or spice. The food DOES NOT taste like what you believe Mexican tastes like. And yes that comment is directed at the dumbass who complained that their soup didn't have a spice rack dumped into it. If it help them, know every time you go to McDonald's (where from the sound of your review you eat a lot) some townie kids are adding a little extra something to your food. Mmmmmmmm good. read more

If you've been looking for truly authentic Mexican food--e.g., not Tex-Mex, and not even Nuevo Latino, but just well-done, traditional Mexican specialties--look not further than Tu y Yo. When you first walk in, you'll be faced with a wall covered in the numerous awards and articles which reflect Tu y Yo's unique approach to Mexican food. Unlike most Mexican establishments in the area, Tu y Yo does not limit itself to ingredients available locally. Rather, the owner of Tu y Yo has made a deliberate effort to bring the flavors of the indigenous cuisine into his Sommerville restaurant, which means, of course, importing special products not available in Boston! That's why you'll be able to try rarities such as cuitlacoche, a corn fungus which has been described as the 'Mexican truffle.' I was particularly excited to see that certain offerings on the menu are marked as "Precolombian dishes," which adds an exciting historical component to your dining experience. And I was charmed by the fact that the menu lists many of the recipes' authors and the dates that they were developed--it really gives you a sense of the evolution of this menu and cuisine, and it is a wonderful personal touch to remind you that the dishes you are enjoying were invented by real people who developed these authentic recipes for their families. As for the food... I'm obsessed with plantains, so of course we had to try the Empanadas de Plátano Macho con Queso, which came with a great crema blanca that perfectly cut the sweetness of the plantain filling. We liked them so much, we considered getting another order for dessert! We wanted to try the famed Mexican truffle, so we also had the Crepa de Cuitlacoche en Salsa Poblana, a thick crepe covered in a creamy sauce that was truly a new flavor experience for us--very unique! As entrees, we had the Mole Colorado Tlaxcalteca, a chicken breast in a red mole sauce which has hints of chocolate and chipotle (just the right amount of sweet and heat!), and the Bisteces "Mamá Evelia," chopped sirloin in a a wonderful tomatillo-chipotle sauce. Both meals came with very well-seasoned black beans and two kinds of rice. We were so happy with our meals that we couldn't even stop eating when we were full! (But we weren't sorry to have leftovers to take home.) One note about service: I have noticed that other reviewers found the service at Tu y Yo to be sub-par, but that was not our experience at all. We loved our waiter, who joked with us and gave us very candid (and ultimately spot-on) evaluations of many of the dishes we were considering. I'll admit that the staff seemed to be stretched a bit thin, so if you are the type to sit quietly in your booth and seethe because no one has stopped by to check on you in the last 5 minutes, this is probably not the place for you. But if you don't mind learning your waiter's name and giving him or her a friendly wave when you need something, you'll have no problems with the service. Oh! And get the house sangria. Who knew such goodness could be found here? I have no clue what "authentic Mexican" entails but I can say that the food was delicious and compared to what I'm used to, pretty creative. Think pomegranate seeds over a cream sauce covering a pepper which is stuffed with beef. It's like unwrapping a present! The service is really friendly. The atmosphere is really warm (unless it's December and people keep walking in and out). The libations are present and it is not the cheapest food you'll find around town, but it's not THAT pricey either. Totally worth it for solid execution of totally crazy (to me) recipes. No, they were stuffed with shredded chicken, and laid over a nice tomato sauce with herbs. The breading was crispy and delicious. Main course was chicken with a chocolate mole sauce. It was smooth with a nice contrast of sweet and savory. It came with beans and rice. Not the re-fried brown stuff that tastes horrible. They had a rich black bean that was great! Gf had a shrimp dish with white wine, tequila, and onions. It was cooked perfectly and delicious. Ordered a side of home made tortillas, and fresh cheese. They were also great! This food is SO GOOD. No really, I mean.. it's that date you wine and dine, and frickin' let sleep over (serve 'em the huevos rancheros or its variant, holy shiz - tasty). I had dinner (Pechugas en Salsa de Chile Poblano), loved it so much.. and came back for brunch the next day. The ingredients are fresh (the beans are cooked just perfectly - not that gross mush you get elsewhere), the meat is tender and flavorful (not too salty; just right), and the menu is creative! You don't get these dishes just anywhere. I can't believe I paid $10 for these tiny tamales though. So don't get those. I love you Tu y Yo. I licked my plate clean. I take back my snobby Californian declaration that there was no decent Mexican food in Boston: this is some serious Mexican food. If you don't believe me, believe the two Mexicans in my party who spent the dinner exclaiming about the authenticity (in Spanish). This is one of my favorite restaurants in Somerville. It's comfort food at it's best. The dark mole sauce is always satisfying, and their vegetarian menu items always please. My favorite are vegetarian tamales and their cactus paddle entree. Their plantain quesadilla is the definition of delicious and their rice and beans- which come with all entrees, are far and away some of the best rice and beans I've ever had. The most authentic Mexican food I've had outside of Oaxaca. I loved everything about this little restaurant. The food is fabulous. The tamales are incredible - we order the vegetarian ones and the meat ones and they were both amazing. Think coconut tamale sounds weird? WRONG. They were delicious, my new favorite. The Tinga Poblana that I ordered was awesome... I got a side order or tortillas to eat with it. And the black beans are soooooooooooo good. But the highlight of the night: DESSERT!! I have to say that their chocolate flan is one of the best desserts I've ever had. EVER. And I'm not a huge flan fan (I like it, but I could live without it). Disappointing is the only word that comes to mind. This used to be one of my favorite places for dinner. After we moved we did not get a chance until recently to visit them again when we took family there for dinner. We were expecting the old Tu Y Yo which had tastier food. We had recommended going here and also made a reservation (I don't think they used to take reservations before). I checked the menu online and it had the old items I liked - the tamales and the Cameron con pulpo (because we went to the Needham one and hated it, the menu was different and something I had was made with half a bottle of lemon juice). The menu they presented had no Cameron con pulpo ( I think it was probably totally different - but I always used to get CCP so I never really bothered about the rest of the menu before). The sangria had a bunch of cinnamon in it, the tamales were half the size they used to be - dry and tasteless, the crepe with shrimp was only ok - shrimp tasted like it was in the freezer for a while. The kids quesadilla was pretty pathetic two tortillas about 4-5 inches in diameter with a thin slather of cheese in between - at least the chicken with rice was a little better. Then came our dinners, which were most recommended by the waitress - our guests were very nice and said they liked the food - but they did leave most of it on their plates - ours were ok but nothing like before. The rice was dry and green but tasteless and could only be eaten with a ton of beans and the pork was ok. The bill - $150 - haha!!! I am disapointed in this place-comparing what it used to be to what it is now. I could have taken my guests to Applebee's and even that would have been better. Tu y Yo is the best Mexican food I've had in Boston. The Champinones al Chipotle are to die for - I wouldn't mind if it were the only thing on the menu. The Indio Vestido (cactus and cheese) is also quite impressive, and I'm going to be sure to try the grasshoppers next time I go. The ambience is pleasant, even romantic, and it's off the beaten path, so it's never a mob scene. Prices are moderate ($13-$18 entres), but I think they're merely a reflection of the superior quality. I really feel that Tu y Yo is a gem. Edit: Last time I went to Tu y Yo, the Championes were gone. Sad! Minus 1 star, but they're still a very strong 4. Oh, and I had the grasshoppers. I was surprised that this restaurant had gotten so many good reviews and happened to be right in my backyard, so I decided to try it out with my wife and some friends. We were not disappointed! I had the flautas, and they were phenomenal. My only gripe was that there weren't enough of those tasty, moist treats. The food is really authentic. I was somewhat dubious upon entering the restaurant because we were the only people there at lunch hour on a Saturday, but my fears were relieved when I bit into that first flauta. Mmmmm. I had been wanting to visit this restaurant since 2007, and I finally got to go in 2008. We walked in and were able to skip the line because the hostess station's organization was horrible! In fact, there was no hostess station! We walked into the back, past about 20 people, and asked if there was a waitlist. They made us #1 (I am not proud of this, I was just STARVING), so we got a table within 15 minutes. As for the food, I'm a Californian, I tend to think I can have an opinion or 2 about Mexican food. I got the Arracherra, which was a small piece of steak with soggy chips (covered in tomato sauce) and beans. Girlfriend got Chili Rellenos which was filled with frozen vegetables that were reheated (off coloration). Both dishes were just really bad and barely enough food when both $15+ a piece. The waitresses were making fun of my girlfriend and I the whole meal. We are mixed race couple and they kept talking about Chinese girl (my girlfriend speaks good Spanish unbenounced to waitresses). I'd bought two groupons to eat here, and then I heard that a woman I know found a staple in her dinner here once. After that, I was feeling some trepidation about cashing in those groupons, but there were no staples in mine or my friends' meals, so I'm figuring that was a one-time fluke. The hot chocolate was my favorite thing of the night. The deep fried grasshopper tacos were unexciting, and I'm fairly certain that they cost as much as they did so that those of us who buy them are really buying the privilege of saying, "I ate grasshopper!" The green mole sauce on the frogs legs was delicious, but there was too much of that one color on the plate. I liked the presentation of the rice, though. And the rice was tasty. But I wasn't blown away by my meal, and I'm not sure how I left the restaurant feeling at once completely stuffed and completely unsatisfied. read more

Came here last night with a couple friends (on the later side of the evening, in attempt to out-wait the rush) --oh my goodness, DELICIOUS. We started with the Empanadas de Plátano Macho con Queso, which were yummy; but the main courses were the the to-die-for part. It's all about the sauce: I had the Mole Colorado Tlaxcalteca, while my table-mates had the Pipian Paskal and Pechugas en Salsa de Chile Poblano (the latter was my absolute favorite). This is "authentic Mexican," folks-- well, it's as close as we're going to get in Boston, anyway. This "fonda" uses family (or at least, friendly) recipes in many of its dishes. Some of the offerings have been a bit bland, and the food didn't quite have the picked-today, market-fresh zing to justify it. Look for items that come with a sauce on top or on the side. My personal favorite entree is the Chile Relleno de Camarn, a sinfully rich stuffed pepper featuring shrimp and goat cheese, two of my favorites. The sangria is, as others have mentioned, quite good, but it is pricey and comes in small quantities. This makes me feel like a lush when I imbibe a small carafe on my own. Service is passably friendly but the food can be slow in coming. In addition, it's a small restaurant, which is part of it's charm, but it also fills up quickly and this can mean a wait for a table. As long as you come here with these things in mind, you can relax with a beverage and enjoy the company and atmosphere. FYI: I've heard a rumour they charge you a minimum dining fee at dinner, but I don't know if this is true. It's not a place you'd really come just for a drink and an appetizer, anyway, so just order an entree! read more

If you read my other reviews, I always make a note of saying I am white (when reviewing Asian cuisine). The reality is, I'm part Mexican. However, I never grew up in Mexico and my Spanish & Culture are seriously lacking. That said, my mom is completely authentic (born and raised in Mexico) ,and when she's in town we always look for a good AUTHENTIC Mexican restaurant. Tu y Yo is pretty dang good. I've been here twice: once with my authentic Mexican mom and once with my non-Mexican girlfriend. When I came with my mom, we spoke Spanish and the service was pretty good (a little slower than other restaurants). When I came with my girlfriend, the service was still friendly, just very slow. However, I'm fine with the slow service as long as the food is delicious. Here is what we've ordered: - Sopes (Appetizer): Definitely choose longaniza (Mexican sausage). These were very yummy. Wasn't crazy about the bistec (beef) ones. - Chile Relleno en Nogada: authentic and DELICIOUS. My girlfriend and I loved this dish and trust me, it is a Mexican specialty. My grandmother won't make this unless we are celebrating something special (like an engagement). - Pollo en Mole Blanco: the waiter recommended this dish but it was bland and boring. Maybe the flavors were just too subtle for me or maybe I'm too used to my mother's awesome chocolate/brown mole sauce. - Chile Relleno de Camarón: very yummy. My mom ordered this dish but I kept reaching across the table to steal some bites. - Nopales con Cerdo: boring. Not bland like the mole blanco, but not very exciting either. Ordered this mainly to show my girlfriend what nopales are (cacti). I love nopales, but not in this dish. I'm not a coffee type of guy, but my mom ordered the Café de Olla after our meal and really enjoyed it. So coffee fans may want to consider ordering this. They also have an awesome hot chocolate in true authentic style (look for the pot they serve it from). All in all, the restaurant is pretty good. I am definitely going again to try their Tinga. Tu y Yo has been on my list of places to go for a few years because some of my friends said it would remind me of good home cooking, but since I rarely venture out near Davis unless dragged it's taken a little while to get here. Now that I've gone, I will definitely be back. I read the reviews on the sangria and decided to order some. It wasn't bad by any means and I'd likely get it again, but I've had better. It tasted a little heavy on the citrus which set off the other spices, but it could have been an off day. The Flautas de Pollo reminded me of my abuela's dish. Definitely tasty and perfect to what I was expecting. The Pechugas en Salsa de Chile Poblano was great. I really liked the sauce, and as others have mentioned-- the rice and beans were fantastic. A friend tried a pork dish with cactus-- quite honestly I wasn't paying attention to the name (oops), and that was also quite tasty. The Oaxacan hot chocolate was also fantastic. Had I enough room, I could have tried some dessert. Next time. When I'm out with friends just looking to enjoy conversation, I prefer places that are light on the service so you don't feel rushed out of there the moment your fork hits the plate, and Tu y Yo was perfect. Our waitress was engaging and attentive, but I never felt like she was hovering over the table. I'll echo the sentiments of a few others-- if you're looking for 'Tex-Mex' Mexican food, you won't find it here. It's a nice laid back environment with very tasteful food. One word: DELICIOUS! Four word disclaimer: small portions and expensive I've been here only a handful of times but the food is absolutely amazing. The dishes always taste way better than I imagine from the menu descriptions and I'm always surprised at the complexity of flavors. The only gripe I have is that I am never full enough after I eat here. I am definitely not a huge portion eater and I am also not a fan of giganto portions (a la Cheesecake Factory). However, if I'm plunking down some extra dough to get food (a big deal since my husband and I are far from rich), I expect to be satisfied completely. Hunger shortly after I leave does not qualify as satisfied, especially after eating both an appetizer and entree all by myself. That aside, if you're looking for some exciting, tasty, and unique Mexican food, this is the place. Tu Y Yo was amazing the first time I went. I had some fantastic zuchini/squash dish, delicious red wine sangria, and a whole lot of fun. Five stars, easy. The second time I went, I noticed the veggie dish I had the previous time was gone. That's okay--I'd have tried something new anyway. The dish was also very very good, the atmosphere was great as always, etc. I looked up what a 'Fonda' was and thought 'hey--I just learned something cool.' The third time I went it became clear how rapidly the vegetarian menu was shrinking. I haven't been back in about six months, but currently the restaurant's website displays not a single vegetarian entree. So.... if you don't care and aren't with people who care, then this should be a five-star eating experience: amazing flavors and price effective to boot. But otherwise...? This review courtesy of my favorite turkish restaurant, istanbu'lu, being closed last night. Instead of driving in circles in a hunger induced stupor, my finance and I made a uncharacteristically speedy decision to try Tu y Yo. The food was superb, 2 out 3 dishes great, and one good. We had two appetizers the Empanadas de Plátano Macho con Queso (good- I'm actually partial to strait fried plantains- these were also a touch greasy) and Crepa de Cuitlacoche en Salsa Poblana (great- I could have eaten the poblano pepper sauce with a spoon-and tried to with my fork) For the entree we tried Nopales en Mole Verde, which was delicious on first bite, and just got better on successive mouthfuls. All told it was a reasonably priced, extremely satisfying meal. Add touches like a colorful (though chilly) dining room, authentic music, and waiters in festive (sort of uncomfortable looking?) neckties-still, I appreciate the effort. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in metro Boston. This is real Mexican food, not the fusion Tex-Mex or Southwestern food you get at most supposed "Mexican" restaurants in the US. My personal favorite entree is the Pipian Paskal (squash in pipian). I've never had a bad appetizer here, though I think my favorite is to order a mix of quesadillas (which are cooked in a thicker dough than the quesadillas at most American Mexican-style restaurants). I highly recommend ordering the Jamaica if you want something nonalcoholic but not just water with your meal, and ordering the Oaxaca-style cocoa as a "dessert" after your meal if you like hot chocolate. I have a friend who grew up in Mexico and another who spent a lot of time there for many years, and they both avow that this is the most authentic inexpensive Mexican restaurant in Boston. I took them at their word and tried it out, and have yet to be disappointed by a meal here! read more

This Mexican place reminds me the most of the food I had while I was in the Yucatan. They have jamaica! I can make it at home, but it's always fun to drink it in a restaurant. They also have great hot chocolate. They're the only place that I know of in MA that has cuitlacoche (corn fungus, aka Mexican truffle). I tried it in Merida and loved it and was so happy to see it on a menu. I always get the crepas de cuitlacoche. I love their vegetarian options. I most recently got the pipian paskal, which is chayote squash with this peanut-y sauce. This is truly gourmet Mexican. The service is hit or miss. The first time I went, the waitress was really attentive on a packed Saturday night. The next time I went for my birthday dinner, the guy wouldn't split the bills for us, couldn't remember orders, and just didn't seem to care- and on a slow Sunday night!
