I could have done without the onion rings and fries as neither were special, but the burger itself divine! The happy hour they have until 7 is limited to three beer choices and same for cocktails which is too bad. World Cup on many screens and filled with locals. Okay, I will start with I forgot it was saint pattys day and the festivities were ALIVE and well. Green beer, a saint pattys day menu, and staff dressed in green! Coming in without a reservation I was accommodated and seated quickly. The servers were so sweet and on top of it! It was refreshing to have good service in the city. Now I know it's in Inwood and I shouldn't be expecting a gourmet meal but, c'mon, frozen Jones sausages in jarred beef gravy? And no onions, either in the gravy or on the potatoes. C'mon, don't insult us this way, serve some Cumberland sausages or some proper Irish sausages, up your game as far as the food. Went on a date night and we actually had fun with random trivia night on a Tuesday. Service is friendly, inwood vibes and the food was OK, good bar and good service. Clean tables and restroom. Ordered the wings they were made well, meatballs, the tubby fries, Buffalo tacos, and had a good selection of plates to try but some were better then others, tasty, but regular bar bites. The business waits for you to rack up a $300 bill and then they want to act like there are fake complaints to make you leave. I have been here atleast 5 times with my son without any problems whatsoever....Of course since we are good tippers. Todays the Owner is here and all of a sudden it's a problem. There were about 5 white families here with their children and nothing happened but since it is us all of sudden it's a problem. I love this place. I've been coming here for years and the food and drinks are quite good. They have a great selection of beers as well as cocktails. I usually have their beef burgers and they're all quite delicious. Ive also tried their salmon burger - tasty as well. They also do a good job at cooking it to your liking. Fries & onion rings are all delicious. I love that I can pair my burger with a salad - a real salad that doesn't consist of iceberg lettuce. Excellent Server! Now that I've prefaced the review, let's dive in...ambiance? Check! From the look it's a great Irish 'themed' bar pumping country music classics. You won't find that in Dublin! Adding to the ambiance is the weird sort of smell that's a cross between alcohol and stale food. First up we're the nachos arriving burnt and extra crispy (too long under the broiler) interesting combination with the cheese whiz/velveeta, chili guacamole mix. The nachos being extra crispy held up under the toppings but there could have been more cheese. I dove into the Tubby Hook burger, Sliders and a side order of onion rings. The burgers have an interesting blend...definitely frozen Pattie's, bacon had seen it's sell-by date ages ago and the extra done fries were cold to the touch. Again, excellent server but the food quality was poor to say the least. Way too much fryer oil in the sides. Burger meat frozen and hardly fresh. Sadly been nursing nausea since the meal. This is the old Piper's Kilt space. I like what they've done with the space, how they removed the barrier between the bar and main dining space and opened up the area right by the entrance. I also like that the decor above the bar pays homage to Inwood's institutions. It's a good mix of the old and new. We came here on Sunday brunch and there was a healthy crowd but it wasn't packed. I like that your first mimosa is free with an order of a brunch entree. I ordered the breakfast pizza/flatbread while my friend ordered the avocado toast and my fiance had the breakfast hash. Food was good but not stellar. Service was a little slow but we weren't in a rush so we didn't mind it at all. I don't go here often for a reason. Partly because of the loss of Piper Kilt and its menu that truthfully was far better. Yeah, I know, the menu, chef and everyone else are different. Came for brunch with an an out of towner. It's sort of sad that they could only really boast about the tater tots. For the price of the brunch meals, it was not worth it. I felt bad that I could have chosen another spot and that this the impression I left on this gal on "local eateries". Most of the food was wasted because it was either over cooked or soaked with runny egg yolk. I ordered the Eggs Benedict and I don't know why. It sounded delectable on the menu. Reminder to self, "I don't like runny AF eggs." The guest ordered the waffles and two tiny, shriveled and over fried "chicken." The waffle was great! I will tell you now though, the maple syrup was not real. I asked the rather clueless waitress to inquire with the kitchen. They claim that the big plastic bottle of maple syrup stored in the basement is organic and real maple syrup. Neighbor PLEASE. Maybe it was from China but whatever was served to me, in that gross black plastic sauce cup, tasted like plastic and was some some concoction of fake that was sitting in some kind of plastic something. Not maple syrup. NOW, I know why the fancy spots offer single serve real maple syrup in those cute glass jars!!! Note to self, bring my own BMO, real maple syrup in general. I had the kid in tow - he ordered the grilled cheese which was charred, it nearly popped out one of his braces. With the removal of the crust due to its crunchiness, it was not even an equivalent of a 1/4 sized sandwich. His side of over crisped bacon was barely touched as well. The OJ made him smile though. This is not my idea of comfort food given the inflated pricing for small servings of mediocre (at best) and over cooked food. I have a weird love for this place. The staff is always so nice, the food is always good and it's just a nice space to be in (I tend to go on of hours/not overly busy weekend hours). Ok, so I walked back in despite the pledge in my previous review. (Albeit, about 2 years later). Much different experience. I have returned several times since my first visit and the Tubby Hook is MUCH better. The service is spot on. I am always greeted in a friendly manner and served quite quickly. The wait staff is energetic, kind, friendly, and attentive. The service is always fast, for both the drinks and the food. The staff checked on me throughout my meals and always knows when I need something or am finished. The food is good. In fact, I crave the fish n chips (that's not good for my health, but what can I complain about??) The burgers are fairly good (maybe hyped too much, but decent) and the specialty cocktails never fail (I usually don't like fancy drinks because they are over done, but while these drinks could go wrong based on the fancy descriptions, they are always well balanced, fresh, and subtle.) The Spring on the Island was a perfect summer refreshment. Finally, the Tubby Hook is LGBTQ+ friendly. I returned with my husband and with gay friends, and we are always treated with dignity and respect. In fact, I suspect the presence of LGBTQ+ staff, but regardless, the environment is safe and welcoming for all. I'll keep returning, now my second favorite restaurant in the neighborhood. read more

Places need to update their hour policy because it is very misleading and extremely inconvenient. This is one of the only places that stay open til 4am around my area and I get here at 3:15 to grab one drink, only one drink! But the shorter blonde lady here who is usually the bartender has a nasty attitude and no consideration. I get here and sat at the bar and the security came up and just told me she just made last call but I could ask her. The place says it closes at 4am and she does last call for drinks at 3:15. I ask her if I could just grab one drink and she couldn't even have a heart to be like you know what, sometimes that's all people just need is a local drink. I understand if I was coming in with a group of people and she had to tell the group I'm sorry you guys but I'm just I'm just one person she could have just taken. Her service will always be remembered for being stand offish. Overall, my husband and I were highly cautious of the change in management bc PK was such a neighborhood treasure. The new upgrade stays true to the ambiance of Pk. Here are the changes that we didn't like: -cheddar cheese on burgers is awful, tastes like Velveeta. Bring back the old stuff. -the menu...prices have gone up but they took away some solid burger choices and staples like chicken fingers. Who gets rid of chicken fingers? -there are no plates for burgers, just a basket. This is really annoying esp when eating fries - Fries! They switched to really small thin fries. Bring the old ones back. Really annoying to eat small fries on paper -WTF is a squash and sweet potato burger? Let's bring back the Manhattan burger and cut the malarkey -most important....where is the pickle with the burger? PK had awesome pickles. Awesome. I lived for them. I just love this place so much. I frequent here quite a bit, on Seamless and in person and they always hit the mark. I come to the sister restaurant, Tryon Public House and its just as fabulous and they both change their menu up once or twice a year to keep it interesting. Mac n cheese, buffalo wings and the Tubby Hook burger are all must haves! I just recently tried the mussels and they were delicious as well! You can't really go wrong with the menu. Come on Tuesday's for trivia! It's a blast and it's always fun to try to beat the always winning teams! I brought my parents here when they visited from Seattle over thanksgiving and they absolutely loved it and felt so at ease and at home. It's one of my favorite things to come to in this neighborhood. Certainly a joy for all people of different ages. Customer service is fantastic and catering. Lovely people work here. I moved to Inwood a little over two years ago and Tubby Hook was one of the first places that felt like home in this neighborhood. I love ya Tubby Hook! read more

This review has me pretty conflicted. On one hand Tubby Hook brings a chill downtown vibe to the neighborhood. As the "ratchet" hookah serving places are slowly becoming less, this spot has a great energy. You'll feel pretty comfortable from just entering immediately. On the other hand, I really loved Piper's Kilt! Thanks for keeping some of the booths guys. But times change, and Tubby Hook is a great addition to this neighborhood. The food was above average bar fare, I had a short rib poutine which was pretty delicious! There was a fried chicken burger that I'm interested in next time. It is such a shame that this is what has become of Piper's Kilt! The food isn't nearly as good (it's now mediocre three star pub fare), but the low one star rating was earned by the manager. My wife and I politely pointed out a discrepancy between the menu and our check to our very nice waitress, who sent her manager over. It was a small discrepancy and he could have just adjusted it, so it was surprising that he even came to the table. It quickly became clear that he was there to press the issue and create an awkward situation. He was amazingly condescending, and while he 100% admitted the error on the menu (he claimed it is too expensive to reprint them), he kept making remarks about the fact that we pointed out the discrepancy and he wouldn't leave it alone. He wanted to make a point, and make us uncomfortable for pointing it out. When I told him that I didn't appreciate his comments, he claimed that it's because he's Irish, and that he has a sense of humor. Well here's a local tip from a lifelong New Yorker. Here we don't find it funny to be condescending and petty to your patrons at a neighborhood place. It's horrible customer service and a surefire way to lose business. read more
