My friends enjoyed their French toast - super thick cut and lots of it. The "side" of bacon is more like a meal - finally a restaurant got this right. Decided to try this place since it is in a nice location. We were sat at a high top near the bar when we were not drinking and it was not busy. The table was dirty and the waitress came over and looked at it and continued to ask for drinks and was going to ignore the fact we needed it to be wiped down. There was a door that had two signs saying DO NOT USE, and multiple servers and the manager used multiple times which caused multiple flies to surround us the entire time we were seated. We ordered spinach dip that came out cold but hot pita bread to go with it. The wraps and sandwiches were good. Seven of us stopped by Tugs for drinks and dessert after the symphony. To begin with, one chair was wet and needed to be replaced; another had lots of crumbs on it, which we brushed off. I ordered a Bellini martini and the rest of our party ordered gumbo and desserts. The waiter came back and said they were out of the peach mixer for the martini so I ordered a hurricane. He brought the food and utensils but no napkins. When we asked for napkins, he tossed some on the table. My drink was awful, nothing like a hurricane should taste. It tasted like it was made with grapefruit juice. I couldn't drink it and complained. He said we don't do refunds on alcohol. We had walked over from the River Inn next door where we were staying and I didn't take my purse. Sounds reasonable to card someone, right? But I'M SIXTY and look every day if it. She claimed state laws requires everyone is carded. FALSE! I was prepared to leave but hubby didn't want to drive somewhere else, so I went back to the hotel and got my damn license. Been traveling to Memphis for a number of months and somewhere didn't make it to Harbor Town until now. Tried Tugs for a quick dinner with a colleague. I had the Bison burger and he had flounder with rice pilaf and broccoli. Both agreed the food was mediocre. They do tell you that they cook burgers medium well. Should've requested medium. I don't thinK it was bison. Burger was OK, not something I would order again. The flounder was about the same, nothing special. Might try the place again if in the area. I ordered a NY strip and wasn't asked how I would like it cooked. I received a super tough and chewy well done steak. I also ordered extra veggies instead of the mashed potatoes as a cleaner option only to find the veggies swimming in a pool of some fake butter flavored something or other. Use real, quality ingredients and the customer's will appreciate it. There was also a sanitation issue with a rather unsavory hair in my friend's salad The service was also lacking. I wanted to like this place because I went with my grandparents and they really love it. But I was not charmed. The river views are nice! If you don't mind the sticky little tables and ridiculously uncomfortable seating. I mean, how much could it possibly cost to make this little patio a destination instead of a landfill with a nice view? A few good chairs and cute tables and a decorative lamp or two would really spruce it up and make it fit into the district better. My first impression of the place was not helped by walking in to see a hostess whom I'd worked with at another restaurant and personally knew to be rude and incompetent. If they'd hire her, what else are they doing wrong? The answer to that question turns out to be practically everything. Our first server was very nice. He was obviously annoyed by a mistake the hostess had made, but he was prompt and friendly and gave the impression of knowing what he was doing. Then, without explanation, our server changed to a pair of servers. After that, one of the pair kept coming back, and never introduced himself or explained he would now be taking care of us. He did the minimal things necessary to keep a table happy, but obviously knew nothing about being friendly and likable with guests. If you can't fake being happy to be there, this is not the industry for you. The food was another lackluster event. My grandparents, although they did not complain, probably should have. My grandfather's panini had obviously been sitting in the window a while. My grandmother's quesadilla looked fine, but if it held up the panini long enough for the cheese on the sandwich to get waxy, this kitchen has a problem. I ordered the onion straws with remoulade and spinach and artichoke dip. The onion straws were very good, my only complaint being that they're kind of hard to eat, like shoe string fries. The spinach dip, however, was deathly unappetizing. The top was covered in bread crumbs, which was the first major mistake, and the dip itself tasted like cheap parm cream with a little bit of spinach thrown in. Very Applebees on a bad night kind of thing. I would NOT order this again, and if I were the owner, I'd do myself and my business a favor by taking it off of the menu. So between the weird service, the patio that actually downgraded our riverfront view instead of making us want to stay all afternoon and order dessert, and the mediocre to terrible food, I will not be back unless I'm dragged by a family member. Do yourself a favor, Tugs management, and keep a better eye on your staff, your kitchen, and your guests overall experience. My visit certainly could've used some managing! read more

The staff is great! Everyone is super nice and accommodating, and this makes you really want to like the food, seriously I'm trying to fall in love with the place. I think they did a good job on their recent renovations and watching a game here seems like it would really be fun. But the food is rather bland-I've tried the pasta, chicken tenders, and meatloaf and they were all missing seasoning-maybe they are looking out for people with high blood pressure. The appetizers are actually okay-the fried pickles and fried wings are my pick. The breakfast is A OK and if I go again it will only be for the breakfast. So yes, I will still continue my quest to love this place but I will stick with their pancakes, eggs, bacon, toast, and biscuits ( I know that's a lot of bread but it's one of my weaknesses). After reading an awesome review in the Downtowner, my husband and I went to Tug's for appetizers and drinks. I was specifically interested in one drink they made mention of in this article- The Grape Bubble Yum Martini. Ummmmm what right-minded gal wouldn't want to try this delicious sounding drink?! I found when I got there that it was comprised of grape vodka, grape Puckers, sweet and sour and Sprite. It was delightfully fab- though I couldn't handle more than one as it was very sweet. Another delightful surprise, we happened to go on a Thursday- "Ladies Night" which meant I got Happy Hour priced drinks all night cuz I am of the female persuasion. I was able to try this fun martini for only 4 bucks. The rest of my drinks (wine by the glass) only cost a mere $3 bucks per glass. I am always happy to partake in drinks, especially when they are easy on the wallet. We ordered the spinach and artichoke dip as well as a bowl of the seafood gumbo- both of which were noted as favorites to try in the article I read. The spinach and artichoke dip was served with warm & toasty pita wedges (yum-o) and the gumbo had juicy, plump chunks of shrimp and crawfish floating amidst the creamy broth and seasonings. Came with my sister a few days ago for lunch. I had the catfish plate and it was very tasty. What I didn't like was the hush puppies, they tasted like something out of the freezer aisle. My sister had a burger and she enjoyed it. The bread was really soft which made the burger taste better. Service was great. Everyone that worked there was very kind and warm. I hate giving bad reviews... I really do... But here goes... I rarely go to Harbor Town... Actually, I never go to Harbor Town. I only went here bc I thought a food truck would still be there by the time I got there but they were sold out. I went in around 9pm on a Wednesday night. They close at 10pm so I understand how that works; I didn't plan on dining in but what am I supposed to do when I'm starving and you're the only restaurant open?! We were seated immediately and I don't think things looked up much from there. (Side note: there were so many mosquitoes INSIDE; I entered with nothing and left with 10 mosquito bites.) I ordered a cup of gumbo and the loaded shoestring fries. 15 minutes later, we're out of water and out comes my gumbo with no rice and was informed my fries were burnt so they were remaking them. Another couple of minutes pass and our waiter finally takes our order. We're out of water. Our fries come out looking like the kitchen absolutely hated us. 10 minutes go by and our food comes out. We're out of water. I had the pretty okay blackened chicken pasta and my friend had the MOST BLAND, NO KIND OF FLAVOR/SEASONED, STRAIGHT OUT OF THE OCEAN AND INTO THE OIL bayou fried thin catfish. The problem with Tug's is that it is yet another quasi-fine dining restaurant with expensive but mediocre food. The bar is in a great location, but it is so quiet inside you can't have a private conversation. Some changes I'd like to see: Drop the formal dining style, let the staff wear street clothes, ditch the lite-FM music--in short, act like a bar. As it is, Tug's and its sister restaurant across the street are competing for the same clientèle, which makes no sense. Until the place lightens up, I and every other middle-aged professional on the Island will continue to head over to TJs for a quick beer, or to one of a dozen better restaurants for a dinner date. One of only a handful of restaurants in Memphis that have a river view, Tug's Casual Cafe is in the Harbortown community on Mud Island. Its prices are reasonable and its food is excellent. Special mention has to be made of the paper-thin catfish which is second only to Middendorf's in Manchac, LA and the Wagyu Burger, which is awesome. And on weekends, Tug's has brunch way past noon! Tug's has desserts, but I like to walk over to the nearby Terrace at the rooftop of the River Inn (same owners) for dessert and a view of the Mississippi from higher up. read more

Tug's opened it's doors this past November and was highly anticipated as a casual option for diners on Mud Island. We enjoyed dinner there for the soft opening and the food was quite good but as can be expected the prices were on the high side. Service was efficient and friendly and has continued to be the times we've visited since. Items we've enjoyed: house salad with lemon dressing, mushroom bisque, gumbo, chili, Guiness, Anchor Steam. Atmosphere isn't great yet, maybe in need of some better lighting and for the staff to switch out of the green shirts to something that doesn't conjure images of "pieces of flair" like just black. Bar: only 3 beers on tap but they boast the "Mid-south's only" Guiness Surger which is pretty interesting to experience if you're sitting at the bar. Weekend nights tend to be busy and usually a wait for a table. Patio seating on busy turn-in street but fair river view. In the near future I would return and get a beer and something off of the starters menu. read more

We have been long time customers of Tuggs but not anymore. Today we went and everything was terrible. The restaurant must be under new ownership or something. First it was hot. Then the food was just okay. We learn today if you complain about your dish you still have to pay for it. Even if it's their fault. How do I pay for something you messed up? This is not fair. INCREDIBLY SLOW SERVICE. do NOT go here if you don't have more than an hour to waste sitting around doing nothing and waiting for them to move around. We came here on a Saturday for a brunchy type of meal. First things first, it is gorgeous if the weather is outside and you can sit outside in the patio area and view the river. I do give it props for the view. However, everything else beyond that went downhill. FOOD - we ordered: chicken and cheese quesadilla - it was plain. they put in an extra something to make it taste a little heavier than usual, and there was that extra something in it that i wasn't too fond of. not a big fan. meatloaf - it was aites. i dont like meatloaf in general. the mashed potatos were cold upon arrival and didnt' taste great. gumbo - looked nasty and tasted subpar. kids meal chicken tenders and fries - fries were soggy and not fried. looked very under cooked. chicken tenders had no breading, very dry chicken on the inside. not recommended. bread pudding with bourbon sauce - i ordered this based on a yelpers recommendation. i highly do not recommend it. it comes out in a big slab and it just doesn't taste that great. its not warm, its pretty hard textured. i could taste the bourbon in the sauce which was good, but it seemed greasy and runny. i'm not a fan of this bread pudding. def not recommended. Mimosa- we also ordered a mimosa, which came out in a tiny cup. that was aites, but i couldn't even taste the vodka and I'm incredibly sensitive to alcohol. SERVICE - our waitstaff was nice, he was nothing short of polite and nice. but that's about it. he was never around to refill water. he was never around to really check up on how we were doing. I ordered a bread pudding and he seemed to forget about it until i had to get up, walk inside, tell another waiter about my order and asked for the checks because i was more than ready to get out of there. Also another waitress was the one that came out with it. Then finally after i had already been done eating the dang thing, our waiter comes out with our check, and then never really came back to pick it up. I had to walk inside to ask someone if i could pay for it in order to get out of this establishment. Dont get me wrong, this is a normal place to go eat if you live on the island or if you're visiting mud island. However, if you're looking to have even half of the rest of your day, do not come here. they literally take forever, and the service is WAY TOO SLOW. i had to get up several times and walk inside to ask for anything that we were looking for. Went here for happy hour on Friday with my friend. Very nice atmosphere, small but big enough to feel comfortable. The hostess was kind of impatient because i didn't see my friend seated. It felt as if she was rushing me to seat me, kind of awkward! Nice waiter. We were seated and ordered drinks immediately! I had the cosmo, my friend had a vodka mixed, sooo good! We also ordered fried pickles and hummus. Let me tell you, the best thing this side of the vegan world!!!! Sooooooooo good! Wanted to try the Tilapia with shrimp, will try it next time. My husband, in-laws and I went to Tug's for dinner Monday night, July 3. My husband and I frequent Tug's quite a bit because we live in West Memphis and it's a short drive from our house to just over the river. Hubby and I recommended several food items including the chicken tenders, the burgers and the meatloaf. We love their fried dill pickles because the breading is light and they use chips and not spears. There were plenty for all of us to share. My husband loves martinis so he ordered a vodka martini and was not disappointed because they are always tasty. All of their drinks are good but I opted not to drink this time and his parents don't drink. Both in-laws decided on the meatloaf and said it was very good. They loved the mashed potatoes that came with the entree but especially loved the onion straws that topped the meatloaf. Hubby ordered the chicken tender dinner and the chicken was cooked just right with a moist inside and a crunchy batter. I ordered the chef salad and to be honest, the meats overwhelmed the salad and there wasn't as much lettuce as I would've liked. If you like a lot of all the toppings, this is the place for you. You definitely get your money's worth when you order a chef salad. The reason I didn't give Tug's a five star rating was for two reasons. 1. Where we were seated and the outrageous amount of flies. We were seated by a window in the back of the restaurant and there were tons of flies. Windows and light attract flies and we were forever swatting flies throughout our meal. I would suggest that they seat as many people in the center of the restaurant until there are no more tables. Also, that amount of flies concerns me as far as the sanitary conditions of the restaurant. I'm not sure how they should remedy this issue since they are in and out the door often while serving the customers on the front patio. 2. The music was really loud. I understand that it is hard to find music that suits everyone's taste but, because of that, I would prefer the sound to be lower than it was when we visited. My husband and I are in our 50's and most music is okay to us but my 76 and 83 year old in-laws weren't as forgiving. We would have just preferred the music be a little quieter. We will continue visiting Tug's because of the good food, drinks and atmosphere but will ask to be seated away from windows in the future and hope the music isn't too overwhelming. read more

I rarely shell out one star reviews, but this place takes the cake. A small group of us came for my girlfriends birthday after The Terrace was vastly over-packed. We are seated by a Hostess and over 10 minutes elapse until a server comes to take our drink orders. Three of us ordered sodas, and one ordered wine. It took a while for the sodas to come, even longer for the glass of wine, and was an absolute chore to get our servers attention to get a refill; even for the wine (which is baffling, as that they get to charge for each glass, which in theory would increase the tip; wouldn't he be eager to get more money? The restaurant wasn't even remotely crowded). I ordered the stuffed chicken breast, which I figured would be relatively rich in flavor. After all, it's stuffed with mozzarella, tomato, and fresh basil. Man was I wrong. Bland, plain, TOTAL waste of money. Had to go to a late lunch meeting so we decided on Tugs. Upon arriving the hostess was very nice and attentive and the server was as well. She was patient when we were busy talking instead if looking at the menu. I ordered the quesadilla and everyone else around me ordered sandwiches. The overall feeling the table was that the food was just average. The atmosphere was good except for the most annoying lady two tables over who had her phone ringer on high and someone was blowing it up. I'm guessing by her lack of class it was one of her john's wanting his money back. All in all a good experience but if they could improve the food it would be an amazing place. Very average menu and food. Atmosphere isn't great but servers are friendly. Walking in, Tugs looks like an old sports bar (which is sort of is) and you expect the same level of menu. But it will surprise you with a bit more to it - fresh fish filets, lettuce wraps, etc. We took our food to go but the servers were all very nice while we waited! We had the southwest rolls and the salmon entree. The rolls were pretty tasty with a sort of chipotle cheese dip, but nothing amazing. The salmon was cooked well, not over, and had some nice herb lemon flavor. It came with a bland angel hair pasta and some sautéed vegetables. Overall, this is a solid place to go late at night when nothing else is open, but I wouldn't say it's great or one of a kind. read more

I had frequent Tugs in the past month and really enjoyed the service as well as the food and drinks.. I regret I can't recall the waitress that made for a pleasant visit to Tugs but this last visit and I did say last visit to Tugs is a wrap. The area we were seated in was assigned to Wendy and you could tell she didn't give a pluck about making our visit pleasant. Slow to come out and greet us was just the beginning. Ms. Wendy finally came out and we placed orders for drinks and she brought a waterdown drink 3/4 of the way full. I sent that back for something enclosed.....which was a Heneiken. We received our appetizer after inquiring how much longer it would be before it came out and our sweetheart of a waitress shared with us," I'm not the cook, just the waitress, but I'll check". She finally brought out the appetizer and at that point we decided to place our order for dinner however Wendy decided to get friendly with the patrons dog that was seated at a table close by ours. Loved on him by petting him and then turned back to us too place our order..... No thank you TUGS. If I wanted dog hairs I would have stayed home and cooked dinner with my English Pointer in the kitchen. read more

Chili was very good, meaty and good flavor profile. Not too salty and little heat Had the Tug's spring salad two people with salmon. Greens, goat cheese dressing were yummy. Had some conflict on the salmon topper. Was dry and thin..like kitchen failed on how to cook good fish. Manager asked about fish and what our concerns were. This place has a very nice atmosphere with a very nice view of the Mississippi River. My only gripe about this place and the reason why I give it 3 stars is because it should be considered sacrilege to serve bland fried catfish in Memphis, especially in this area where catfish is in abundance. What made it bad is that I brought the leftover catfish home that I didn't eat, threw some of my favorite hot sauce on it to see if it would do the trick, but that still didn't help it. It seemed like someone just threw some fish in hot grease, fried it to a nice golden brown, but forgot to add the salt and pepper! On another note their queso was awesome! I hear from a few people the lunch and dinner fare is just average, but I LOVED my brunch at Tugs. I was in a heavy mood, so I got the Farmer's Omelette with onions, peppers, potatoes, and ham. It was AWESOME and I got grits on the side. More importantly, my mom and I got a few well priced mimosas. Because what is brunch without drinks? Harbor Town is in true downtown Memphis, and my mom and I drove for about 25 minutes from the other side of town because she loves the brunch so much.
