There seems to be a taco shop on most street corners so there are lots of options for a quick snack. However, if you are looking for a refined menu with original takes on classic Mexican flavors in NWA go to Tula. Tula is located at the Fayetteville square in the University of Arkansas Pryor Center. The restaurant opened just before the pandemic in a newly remodeled space. Space is key as social distancing rules are practical here. There is a main dining room as well as an outdoor dining patio that greats you as you make your way to the main entrances. Reservations are recommended at this time. A benchmark for any Mexican restaurant is found in the quality of the tortilla chips and salsas served. There is a small fee for the chips and salsas but both are replenished for free. Pay the small fee. The house tortilla chips are fresh and delicious. The three salsas are house fired tomatillo, red 3 chili pepper blend (cascabel ,guajillo, morita), and habanero. All are pretty spicy but the habanero was the most intriguing with its hint of orange citrus. The presentation of the main courses was excellent. The carne asada was a nicely grilled quality skirt steak. Contrasting it was the sweetness of a fried plantain. The slow braised beef short rib costilla was accented with a sprout of cilantro. It was super tender. The robust guajillo sauce covered the plate and the meat. To the side, perfectly mashed potatoes sat isolated within a tortilla cup. Smokey bacon pinto beans accompanied both entrees. For desert the churros were perfect for two. As expected, the churros were sprinkled with sugar and served with a melted chocolate dipping sauce. What was surprising was that the churros were filled with a goat cheese and caramel filling. Very nice. There are other very interesting items on the menu that beg to be tried and the dishes seen on other tables all looked amazing. We made reservations for my daughter's birthday for 12 people. I wish they would have told me we would have to sit a two separate tables because they were bolted to the floor and only accommodated 6 per table. The food was ok but a little overpriced. Food was excellent particularly Queso Fundito and the skirt steak entree. Server was great. I had something happen for the first time ever at a restaurant and I am in my late 50s. We arrived on time on the eve of a football game day with a reservation. We were promptly seated, greeted by our server, and brought drinks and appetizers. From then on things starting dragged out. The manager approached us several times and apologized for the entrées not yet coming out. It was not concerning to us because we had great company, good drinks and delightful appetizers. We finally were served our entrées, and they were delicious. Our waiter then approached and asked us if we cared to order dessert. He strongly recommended it. We ordered two dessert items to share. Shortly thereafter, the manager came up to our table and told us in an aggressive tone that someone else was waiting on our table and that we needed to conclude our meal. We had not yet received the dessert we had just ordered. And certainly had not been presented with a check. After he left the table, we all looked at each other in shock. Just wow!! Like come ON GUYS YOU EAT THOSE VEGGIE TACOS AND TELL ME THEY DONT SUCK. They didnt even have any salt or pepper or hot sauce on the table. It was like Thanksgiving at my grandmas house, just overcooked unseasoned vegetables. Taco tortillas werent even fried, they were RAW ROOM TEMP CORN TORTILLAS. All I can say is don't ever take your Mexican friends here. You will get roasted. And those tacos arent cheap either. There are probably 5 Mexican places in Fayetteville that are better, and none of them even try that hard... Bougie restaurant with no flavor and no vibes. We had a wonderful experience here! It's just off of the square in an office/art/history type building that we couldn't quite figure out, but it was easy to get to and we found off street parking easily. We had made reservations several weeks in advance as it was graduation weekend. We were seated quickly and ordered some appetizers and "graduation special" margaritas. The meals were all delicious and authentic Mexican. The chips were magical. So fresh and delicious. I didn't take any pictures so you'll have to take my word for it. The manager came over with a special blanco tequila bottle that he offered for us to try, one in my party did and he said it was very smooth and smoky. I had the veggie tacos which they pair with black beans. It was a build your own taco, almost like a fajita, and I enjoyed that a lot. The veggies were fresh not frozen and warmed up. I would love to give a review about the food but I didn't get to try it. I got on the Waitlist for a table for 1. It showed a 45-55 minute wait. No problem. When I checked in about 30 minutes later, I was told it was going to be at least 45 more minutes. No problem. I waited about 30 more minutes to see how much longer. Still another 45 minutes! Waitlist showed 1 party ahead of me but the host said there was a lot of people ahead of me that didn't show on waitlist. I got the impression they didn't want to seat a table of 1.
