With such a busy week and feeling exhausted, I knew I wouldn't be able to make my love a birthday cake this year. I dropped by hoping to grab a whole cake for his special birthday and was greeted by 2 friendly employees immediately. They let me know they would be right with me as they were both busy, I appreciated the friendly acknowledgement. I was happy to see a variety of whole cakes available as well as other desserts and pastries. I chose one of their beautiful carrot cakes. I also got a morning bun and quiche to share. Every year I order the special Mother's Day cake, this year was no exception. They were not answering the phone so I drove in person and ordered the cake. I spoke to the gentleman who took my order and he raved about the cake, stated it was a shame they only made it once a year, etc. - all this to say, I certainly ordered and paid for the special cake. Flash forward to today when I break open the box to dish out the cake. It's not the cake. It's an olive oil cake, which is fine if you like it, my mother does not. Was Mother's Day ruined, no. But paying 50.00 dollars and driving to order the cake, then days later driving to pick up the cake, only for them to give me a cake you can literally get everyday is just wrong. There is indoor seating if you'd like to sit and enjoy your treats as well as a menu of prepared foods if you're looking for something more substantial. We loved this place so much that we stopped by twice. Great coffee, pastries and quiches. I recommend the sugar cookie for kids, scone, and the veggie quiche. I would ask them to warm up the quiche. They had an amazing seasonal fruit hand pie which looks like a pop tart covered in sugar and it was super yum! Cute coffee shop! I got the chai latte which was perfectly spiced. And shared a sesame croissant, seasonal vegetable croissant (tomato and basil), and quiche with bacon with some friends. My favorite was the sesame croissant which was more like a paste on the inside and had a hint of sweetness. Vegetable croissant had this layer of cheese at the top which made it so delicious too. The olive cake with brown butter frosting is one of, if not the best cake I've ever had.

Tasty food but the service is a joke. You can stand at the register until you turn to stone and they won't care. All a good employee has to do, to make a guest feel seen, is glance up and say, "Be right with you," or make eye contact and nod, but no--it's like they take pleasure in ignoring you. The last time I visited (which is to say the last time I will ever visit), I waited and waited and waited, even as a handful of employees milled around behind the counter and in the kitchen, laughing/chatting with each other as if customers didn't exist. I finally gave up and walked out. All the nice food in the world doesn't excuse discourtesy. Not cool. read more

OK, so these guys are a bakery so it's good they do that part very well. The product that they offer here is pretty refined, sometimes downright beautiful. The pastries, especially cookies, are of excellent quality and conception. The coffee is better than average. It's not outrageously great like Jack Mormon Coffee or Alpha Coffee, but still better than adequate. So despite a high level of competency with a very good product, there something missing here. I'm not sure if it's the staff or not. They are always polite but I would observe that they are a little bit detached and not very welcoming. It's a good place especially around the holidays. More than once I've put together a box of baked goods and presented them as gifts and people were delighted and surprised at how delicious and beautiful they were. So, the place definitely has its value and I stop in occasionally to find out what they have done that's new and I usually find something that was worth the trip. But I never feel compelled to stop in regularly, maybe because it just isn't an environment where you wanna sit down and slowly enjoy the experience. read more

A bit pricey Our group got banana walnut bread, almond cream tart and lemon tart with iced latte and matcha. They were a bit pricey (it's an Insta friendly place if you know you know). The crusts of the tarts was just like those for pies and were hard to cut in, but the flavors are still good. Would be great if the crust was flaky. We also liked how the natural the matcha tasted. So weird: there was a fresh cake at 8:00 am today, and a small piece of leftover cake. I asked for a fresh slice and the counterperson said "I am not going to give you that." The rudeness (and pettiness!) aside, seems like the wrong business choice: don't you make more money selling individual slices? I'm a flight attendant, and I love going to different bakeries on my layovers. I went here on Friday Aug 22 around 1:00. The man taking orders at the counter was incredibly rude and unhelpful. I ordered the ricotta toast, which was good. Its important to note that my cell phone stopped getting service in this area (I have ATT), I couldnt access maps, messages wouldn't send or receive, and I was traveling for work so I was using uber and Lyft. My phone was trying so hard to work that it began over heating. I couldn't call an uber to get back to my hotel, so I asked if they had wifi. I was rudely told no they don't in order to keep people from being on laptops, I understand, but I explained it was a safety issue and I couldn't get cell service to get back to my hotel and it was over 3 miles, too far to walk. I ended up walking about a half mile until I got to an area where I had cell reception. Overall this was a very uncomfortable negative experience and I did not feel safe. I ended up having to walk about half a mile and have my boyfriend send me an uber. All of this could have been avoided if the staff put any effort into customer service or had an ounce of compassion. When it's a matter of safety, I feel like the shop's WiFi should be made available. The food was fine, not worth all the trouble and there's definitely better options with owners and staff who are more deserving of your money. read more

My all time favorite bakery in SLC, the ultimate famous olive oil cake here is the only cake I "crave" whenever I feel like cake, especially with a hot cup of very well done coffee. You can usually get it by the slice most days, but you can also get the full cake in several sizes starting at 6". It's an extra treat to have the full cake because then I get olive oil cake for a couple days (absolutely makes the table at the tea party, gifted by a friend in the pic at afternoon tea I hosted awhile back). Having been all over the country and having had a lot of pasteries and cakes from all over, this is still my total favorite cake- so incredible it's right here in SLC and that I can get it so close to home. I love that these guys know how to do coffee well, I've never had a bad coffee here even though everything is artistically brewed but so classic at the same time. All the other baked goods outside of my go-to olive oil cake are fab, you really can't be disappointed at Tulie, it just doesn't happen. It's such a classic bakery and everything is simple, elegant, but done to perfection. They have two locations, I personally like their original location best, there is little seating but I usually have better luck with selection at this location. Either way, you can't go wrong- the location up in the Aves are in a cute neighborhood with a deli and art gallery next door so both are good to check out depending on what neighborhood you're in. Very tangy and acidic, and the cream on top isn't that sickly sweet kind you just want to scoop off and throw away, it's light and lightly sweet. It's a perfectly balanced treat. Let's start positive, The food here is AMAZING. Everything made from scratch using quality ingredients. Their buttercream is made from BUTTER not Shortening so it is Delicious and Rich and everything buttercream frosting is SUPPOSED to be. The Homemade ricotta and Jam toast is heaven on a plate. Their veggie croissant is out of this world. The prices are more than fair, you can't make it better at home unless you're a trained pasty chef, PERIOD. The stores are clean, airy, peaceful. The decor ads a sense of freshness, cleanliness, and seriousness. It's clear you're in a place that takes baking very seriously. The food is paramount to everything else. Now the negative. Their customer service is awful. They don't care about you. They don't care if you're a repeat customer on your 20th visit. You ARE going to wait. You're NOT going to be smiled at or thanked or, in many cases, not even looked at. 90% of the staff are tetchy rude arrogant and visibly irritated. I don't need shop workers to kiss my ass so I'm okay with this. The food is also SO good that it makes it 100% worth the masochistic staff. To be fair the female staff are generally much more pleasant than the sour faced male staff that are clearly holding a grudge against...? The world? The cash register? Short sleeved tshirts? Who knows. But the bottom line is, this place is quality, worth every penny, and worth the bitter pill of long waits, sour faces, and nonexistent customer service. read more

I called on a Saturday to order a cake for a Monday pick up and they said they would not take my order because it was less than 3 days notice... but is that not 3 days? I then asked if they have these cakes regularly every day. She said yes. So I asked if I could give her money in advance or even call Monday am to pay for a cake and pick it up after work. I was excited to finally try this place for the first time today. We ordered two pumpkin lattes. One with 4 shots and one regular and a piece of coffee cake. When handed our drinks, the barista handed them to us backwards and we didn't see that they had wrote on them. I did some research before coming to Salt Lake City and had Tulie Bakery on my list of places I couldn't wait to try. I wish I could have tried more baked goods! Everything looked amazing. I started out with a latte and avocado toast. The avocado toast was delicious on fresh-baked bread and topped with olive oil and salt and pepper. I also got a morning bun for the road which is like a cinnamon roll except without frosting and coated in sugar and cinnamon. During my visit to SLC, I had a chance to stop by Tulie one day for breakfast. The ricotta and peach jam toast I tried was really well made: the ricotta was subtle, the peach jam wasn't too sweet, and the bread was as fresh as you can get. For $7, the portion size of two large pieces was really filling. In addition to the toast, I also got an egg and bacon croissant for the road. The croissants here are massive, and are fitting for a meal by itself. The croissant had nice flaky layers and is definitely something I'd get again: I would advise to not eat this in your car though, since you will undoubtedly make a mess. read more
