The food and experience at Tulsi were both great! We visited on a Monday night and were one of only a few tables. The staff were all so nice and seemed to genuinely care that we were happy with our meal. I had the mango chicken and my husband had the chicken tikka masala, both ordered medium-to-hot. I could have gone for a bit more spice in mine, but the tikka masala was the exact spice level we were expecting. The portions were perfect; we had nothing left to take home (unfortunately) but we were definitely full! Everything was very flavorful and cooked just right. The naan was also wonderful. I'm looking forward to visiting again and trying other menu items, if I can pull myself away from ordering the same thing again and again. read more

What a great restaurant and our waiter Shahzad was great selecting Vegan and Gluten free options for my picky wife. In fact my wife rarely eats out, we took a chance on Tulsi and it was perfect! Great new idian spot in Carytown. Very bright and pleasant interior with great people watching views of Cary street. Went for a weekend lunch, both got thali samplers (meat and seafood), which was a great way to get a sampling of different dishes. Meat was med-hot, and if you like spicy -- should probably just go for hot or medium-hot.seafood was mild, which was perfect for sharing with our 4yr old. Also got roti and gohbi kulcha. Delicious! Right when you walk in the door you are hit with all of the smells of the spices making your mouth water. We were seated right away (we had a party of 4). The service was very friendly and the waitress helped make some suggestions. I ordered the mango curry with chicken. It was the perfect mix of spicy and sweet. We also ordered the bread basket and were pleased with the amount of options to choose from. It was fluff and satisfying. All in all, I definitely recommend this place! I was in Richmond for 2 nights. I went here both nights. While I do love Indian food I will always make a point to go somewhere different for dinner each night. This is a big world! There's a lot of places to eat! But when you find what is likely the best place for Indian food- you'd be best served to go back. The chicken Tikka masala was amazing, as was the Chile naan. Solid Indian restaurant with good food, service and prices. The menu had the standard Indian dishes that you can expect at most Indian restaurants in the US. Be careful ordering spicy or extra spicy seasonings on your dishes. I eat a lot of spicy food and this was in the upper echelon of spicy food. *note: I came here with 4 people didn't need a reservation for dinner on a weekend night. Great addition to the neighborhood! From Sept 2017: Ate here last night with my husband and a friend. Enjoyed the food immensely. So grateful to have a decent Indian restaurant in the neighborhood! Together we got a bread basket, an appetizer, and three entrees. All were flavorful, fresh, and attractively presented. The place is obviously still in process--the ABC license isn't active yet, art is not yet hung on all the walls, and our servers were more polite than confident. Still, we enjoyed our meal and plan to return, hopefully to watch the place come into itself. Fingers crossed that the neighborhood adopts this place like it has its many burger and thai joints. As the place moves forward, I would like to see the lighting in the dining area soften in the evening. I felt a bit under a microscope with the current lighting. read more

We got the vegetable samosas (delicious), the cheese naan (yum!) to share and for my entree I got the chicken korma at medium heat. It was the right amount of spice I was looking for. They also made sure we had plenty of rice. To finish we shared a tasty dessert that I can't recall the name of but they were like tiny doughnut balls. Atmosphere was great and cozy; soon as you walk in the door you get hit with some great smelling food and spices too! The palak was absolutely delicious, but i would caution the diner on two points. First, the goat has a lot of bones (normal?) so i wouldn't recommend that as your protein of choice. Second, if you get a bread basket, dont count on having equal amounts of all three choices. I was loaded up on two of the three but only had half a piece of the final naan selection. Also watch the receipts if you are paying separately. The servers dont communicate well and you may not get what you're thinking. Overall, good experience read more

Tulsi is really an under-rated gem. It is great Indian food in a fine dining setting. The menu has a variety of classic fare, but the core lets you choose the type of curry or sauce you want then pair that with a variety of protein or vegetable options. It is all nicely curated if you are not well versed in Indian cuisine. They offer a wide variety of naan and other breads. You can choose a bread basket and get a variety. I would recommend this. They are amazing. It is worth going just for the naan et al. Finally the service is excellent as well. It makes for a very enjoyable evening. read more

My hubby and I love Indian food and we love that there is an Indian restaurant in Carytown! We have been to Tulsi twice and we have shared the masala chicken curry, which is so delicious, and enough food for two people, especially if you get some naan (which you have got to do). We get the three choices of naan. Their naan is perfect and they offer many different varieties. Tulsi is a bit pricey if you go for dinner, but the service is always so attentive and they will give you as much extra rice as you can eat. read more

I have eaten at many Indian restaurants as well as cooking a lot of Indian food so I am familiar with the spices and many of the dishes. The choices were almost overwhelming. As a vegan, I was thrilled with the selection of dishes. The selection of breads was fantastic, it was so hard to choose. We ended up getting a mixture of 4 different breads as well as the entrées. My husband and I ordered take out from Tulsi about a month or two ago. We got a naan basket with garlic, spicy, and basil naan as well as an order of their palak paneer and veggie korma. We asked for both to be spiced medium though I don't think palak paneer is usually spiced hot (and it wasn't). I thought that the amount we paid for what we got was a little high, with the exception of the rice which we received a ton of. The portions for take out were somewhat small compared to what I saw in the restaurant. However the dishes themselves were quite good. The vegetable korma was incredibly spicy. I eat a lot of spicy food and this had me surprisingly in tears the whole time. I would probably go for less spice next time! I think if I were to try again I'd opt to eat in and see if that changes my experience. As a take out option I think lemon is probably better! read more
