I'm always looking for new Indian restaurants to try in Richmond, VA. I've driven past Tulsi a few times and finally took the plunge and gave them a shot. Given the positive reviews on Yelp, I knew I wouldn't be disappointed - but boy, was I wrong. I ordered takeout via the Yelp app and waited 30 minutes for my meal to be prepared. Upon arriving to Tulsi, my boyfriend offered to run inside and pick up the food for me. He returned back to the car no more than 30 seconds later to inform me that they refused to give him the food and wanted to see the Yelp receipt. I found this strange, but understood it may be the restaurants policy. I left the car and went inside myself with the receipt pulled up on my phone. The older woman up front looked at my phone in silence, still concerned to hand over the food. Mind you - the meal had already been paid for and I had the receipt pulled up. After having to point out that the receipt I was showing her was for "Tulsi", she finally handed over my food. I order dinner from the Yelp app at least 3x a week and never deal with customer service like this. It was if she didn't believe the food was mine, despite showing her the receipt like she requested. I had such high hopes for this restaurant, but unfortunately will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

Wow is the first thought after dinning at this great establishments. I am not a India food lover by any means, however, I could be after this place. My meal consist of Garlic Naan, non-veggie appetizer, and masala. The Masala was really good, but at the end of my meal I tried some Rogan Josh. The dish Rogan Josh was like fireworks in my mouth. It instantly gave me goosebumps, this was clearly the hidden gem. It is a shame I am only in town for a short time, but I look forward on dinning here once again before I leave. The staff was wonderful and the environment was the type for that special someone. My table did get frequent visits from the professionals that prepared my meal and one can draw the conclusion that their heart and soul went into making my food. Being a foodie, I love to see when someone has passion for what they do. When this passion is used to create something, a breathtaking experience occurs. I got the vindaloo with lamb and it was delicious!! Our table got the veg and non veg appetizer and definitely preferred the non veg for taste and sharing. The mango lasee was the perfect combination of mango purée and yogurt. Service was especially great and they are very tidy with well-spaced indoor seating during Covid. read more

I had high expectations for this place when I read the reviews, but the moment I walked in and sat down it went slowly downhill. The waiter sat me down and did not come back for another 15 minutes. Ontop of that the order was messed up even after it took us a lot of time to order conversating. To mention the food, I ordered the aloo paratha with my entree and it was absolutely terrible. The only thing in the paratha was turmeric and no flavor and almost no potato at all. A paratha is not this at all and is supposed to have a completely different look ad flavor. This is con food for people who are not aware of true desi culture food. When I received the food as well, it was nothing but salty and not flavorful. I also love a good spice and I quickly realized the way this place spiced their food would take away way too much from the actual flavor of the food. I was highly disappointed. read more

This place was amazing. I'm very conflicted because I cannot decide on whether it is better than Lemon or not. Either way it is probably the best Indian restaurant in Richmond. Tulsi has a great location in the middle of carytown. The venue is very beautiful and clean. The portion size was good and I did not feel bloated after (like you will with some Indian food). I had been dying to try this place since I'm such a fan of Indian food. I walked in around 6:25 PM on a Sunday, and was ignored for about 10 minutes because I was sitting alone. It is now approaching 7:30 and I've only been served my appetizer, which I had to beg and ask for when I saw people who arrived after me served. I am highly upset as I feel my time wasn't valued. Please hire more staff or step up the customer service! I could've went to Mom Siam's and had my food by now. read more

I tried tulsi out earlier this week and it was great! It was my first time trying out Indian food and I got the butter chicken. The butter chicken was full of flavor, the chicken was super tender. I can't say enough good things about this place. I have been coming here regularly since they first opened. I've never had a bad meal. The food is fantastic and the service is always solid. Recently, I placed a take out order and they made an innocent mistake and gave me the wrong food. It was nonetheless delicious. When I called to politely complain the owner immediately apologized and the next time I ordered food I got a ton of extra stuff. These people are great! I can't recommend this place enough!!! Tulsi is our go to Indian place in town. The food is always tasty, and the menu has a huge variety. It's nestled in carytown, and pretty Covid we would probably eat in half the time and take out the other half. Now with Covid they're back open, but only taking phone orders. Hubs is obsessed with their gobi Manchurian, and swears by the chicken tikka masala. We also enjoy the chicken konkani, and the veggie option we fondly call "peas and cheese." Absolutely fantastic food!!! I've always complained that there wasn't a great Indian restaurant in the Near West End, but Tulsi has ended that question. The staff is wonderful...attentive & friendly. The menu is a twist on traditional Indian food and I liked the fact that I had to ask what some of the dishes were. Usually I know them all. The Food: Very good Indian. Solid prices. Did not disappoint. The Service: RUDE. Our "waitress" was a willful disaster. From the moment we walked in the door she was inexplicably rude and insincere and from then on made sure to keep things just as uncomfortable and awkward as possible. It was not always what she said, but how she said it that came across as stupid and unwelcoming. The male waitress who came by at a couple points didn't fare much better. To top off all of this idiocy, when the end of the meal came around, I put my coat on because, well, I was ready to go and the check was nowhere in sight. After a little while, when they finally returned to our table, I was greeted by our lovely waitress with a "Well, I can see you're all ready to go, so I'll get the check." And again, the delivery is what really left a bad taste in the mouth. Didn't it occur to her that perhaps I was just cold? No, of course not. She immediately jumped to the correct conclusion but from nothing more than the seeming desire to be ugly and totally without tact or common sense. I'm perplexed as to what leads people to work in the service industry who have not an inkling of a desire to be of service to others... maybe because they can't get any other job, but then they should TRY HARDER. read more

A nice new addition to Carytown. I was a little sad to see they got rid of the fun lights that Yapple and Spiral Noodle had but they definitely classed the joint up! Overall, the service was excellent but the food was only okay. We got the Chili Paneer and Gobhi Manchurian to start, and asked for both of them to be made spicy but neither were and the amount of food you got for the price, I'd say wasn't worth it. For my main dish I got the Bhindi. Again, we asked for it to be made extra spicy but it was mild at best. It also seemed like whoever made the dish wasn't familiar with preparing okra because it came out kind of slimy. While I thought my food was meh, a few of my other meat eating friends really enjoyed their selection of the Goat Vindaloo. I'm going to chalk it up to the fact that they're new and maybe not producing consistently good food yet and give them another try in the future. read more
