Authentic, flavorful, well-presented dishes. The stuffed naan breads were amazing! They must have a clay tandoori oven in the back from the crispiness and char on the bread. Tandoori chicken sizzled to our table as the we caught a whiff of the fragrant smoke. Lamb Rogan Josh so tender and packed with spices and aromatics. Side chutneys complemented each and every dish. My boo says beer prices are unbelievable-- $4 per bottle -- that's like late '90s price. We will definitely be back!!!! read more

Great new Indian place in the absolute epicenter of Carytown. Food is flavorful and fresh. Portions are smaller than other Indian places I've been to so not as easy to share around the table. We were spending the night in Richmond on a trip from Northeast to South. I love Indian food and have eaten at many restaurants in the US and UK. We found Tulsi by a google search and it was close to our hotel. Hands down the BEST Indian food I've eaten. I could kick myself for not placing an order to go to take back with us the next day. Every part of the meal was excellent. We ordered the non vegetarian appetizer and the meat was like butter. No knife needed. The garlic naan bread was very light with great flavor. Our main entree, chicken Masala was excellent as well serving as much rice as you needed to soak up the savory sauce. Service at Tulsi is the best I've experienced in a while. Spent $200 here on Christmas Eve for take out for the family. Felt something crunchy in my Korma. I was disgusted to see it was some kind of beetle with antennas. This food is phenomenal. We have been wanting to try it and finally got the opportunity. We got the food as take out, I had chicken korma, my husband had tandoori shrimp, and a veg (can't recall which), he had a naan with cheese in it, I had the one with rosemary and thyme. As he was eating my husband kept saying, "oh my gosh, this is so good," and, "I could just keep eating the vegetables, they're amazing." He said his was really fresh tasting, mine was rich and warming and everything I want in a solid Indian dish. Go ASAP. read more

This was my first time eating Indian from a restaurant and it was so good! I ordered the chicken Tikka and my friend had the butter chicken. Wow! I've been waiting for a wonderful Indian restaurant to start in Richmond and the wait is finally over! Tulsi is perfect for all ages, and my friends and I fell in love with it immediately. The food was so different from anything I've tasted before because it was the most authentic out of all the Indian restaurants I've been to: it tasted like home. We ordered a variety of appetizers, and shared all of our entrees. My friend ordered a mango lassi and after trying it, the rest of us immediately ordered some more because it was delicious. The atmosphere was relaxing and enjoyable (we ended up staying and conversing for 2 hours!), and the staff was so inviting and hospitable. It was extremely clean and spacious! The high ceilings and the huge windows opened up the space really well. I cannot wait to see this restaurant flourish some more but so far, it's the perfect spot to try because I'm already coming back tomorrow. read more

What a great meal. Perfect service ; prompt but not hurried and considerate. Pleasant atmosphere. We sat in a booth overlooking Cary Street. The samosas were beautifully spiced. We had delicious mini eggplant korma a lovely dish that I've never seen on another Indian menu. My favorite dish was cauliflower tandoori it was hot, chared, spicy and delicious. read more

We dined at Tulsi on Saturday evening, August 13th. From the moment we walked in, the host/ waiter was rude. Instead of showing us to our table, he pointed us in the direction of it. When he took our order, he was very abrupt and rude. My daughter asked for a clean glass, which he did not bring until the end of our meal, and only after my husband reminded him. I witnessed him seating other patrons, and speaking kindly to other patrons, and I witnessed other staff going to tables and inquiring as to whether everything was okay. Finally, one employee came over to let us know that our food was on the way, but she was the only real interaction with staff that we had. The only reason that Tulsi is receiving 2 stars from me is because the food was good; however, we should have followed our instincts and left immediately. Tulsi owners may want to look into training employees on how to treat all patrons the same, because we will not be back. read more

This place is a total go-to if you're in the mood for Indian food! I don't understand any of the negative comments here! The food tasted amazing, not too big of a selection (which I like not to get overwhelmed), good range of spice for the heat lovers, and fast and kind service. The owner of the restaurant was also my server and he was very polite, quick, and knowledgeable. The only thing that may be biasing my opinion was that I came in right after opening and I was the only one dining. But that being said, I had a lovely lunch. My wife and I came in earlier than our reservation and they kindly sat us in a booth while getting our table ready. We we taken to our table and it was decorated with pink roses and rose petals. Our server, Rawad was funny and did a great job explaining the food to us. The food was great! I had lamb and my wife had goat. We loved the appetizers! After reading the great reviews I decided to get delivery last night, and it was absolutely delicious. I ordered the veggie masala and garlic naan, and I was not disappointed! The masala was some of the best I've had, perfectly spiced and so flavorful. Great mix of veggies too. And the garlic naan was out of this world good. This place was absolutely horrible, not only was the lamb Karahi very chewy but I ended up finding a long piece of a woman's hair in my food. The customer service was absolutely horrible as well, they did not offer me a refund and treated me unfairly when I said that I found that hair in my food. Delicious!!!! I've gone a handful of times for their lunch hour (which is a great deal!) I order shrimp makhani which actually isn't on the menu but they will prepare it and it is awesome. I've also ordered crab makhani which is equally delicious. Indian food is my favorite cuisine. I only picked up food to go...did not dine in the restaurant...so I can't speak about the service...but the ambience/atmosphere seemed nice when I got there...prices seemed a little pricey compared to other places I've eaten Indian food at and for the amount of food actually you're getting...the actual food tasted good, but as some have stated not as spicy/hot as it could be...also I felt very little actual vindaloo meat came in my to go container, and it was full of non spicy sauce...Perhaps I will see how the portions are while dining in... read more

We have enjoyed Tulsi a few times now. Friendly and attentive staff and the food is excellent. We especially enjoyed the Vindaloo and masala. You can order the heat level to your preference. I didn't find the medium to be spicy. Medium hot had a nice kick. Next time I'll try the hot. The kids liked the mango curry mild. read more

Things got off to a rocky start because when I arrived, it appeared my order over the phone hadn't gone through. It then also took a bit longer than I might have expected AND they almost gave my food away to someone else. Everyone has their off nights and I am sure it's hard working food service right now, but I was rather hungry and irritable by the time I sat down to eat. So what I can say is that this food was *so* good, that I not only completely forgot about any trouble with the order when I got home, but I went back and got dinner to take over to my dad the next night. My mom passed recently and Indian food is sort of my comfort food. I have had some really disappointing meals at other Indian restaurants lately because I do seem to be carrying some curse around with me. I think Tulsi must be using really good spices because it really lifted my mood and made me feel like I'd eaten something good for me, which was really welcome under the circumstances. I'd love it if they offered an online cooking class or perhaps were willing to share a recipe because I can't afford to eat here every day, but I would if I could! read more

This is going to be a long one so read it and appreciate the thoroughness. I'm going to start with the esoteric things and then get down to the food. Location is irrelevant because I will travel for great food, but it's in Carytown and it's been a long damn time since there has been raveable Indian food outside of short pump. So it's good to have great and I mean GREAT Indian food in the city. Next, atmosphere. It is cozy and eclectic and this is kind of random, but there are fresh flowers (and not just cookie-cutter but individual fresh and different flowers) on every table. It just looks like they took the time to care. Next, service. Our server happened to be the wife of the chef. She was attentive without being hover-y. Food was fast as lightning. In fact, so fast that I was amazed yet nothing seemed pre-prepared. Now, this is not white glove service but it is the right kind of service for this type of establishment. Lastly and I will admit this weakness...WILL travel for food. Any of y'all that are in the greater Richmond area that feel the same know that amazing Indian food IS Rasika in DC. That is the standard by which all mid Atlantic Indian restaurants are measured by. I'm here to tell you that this place is better. The food is here AMAZING. Yes the word is overused but it's the only word I can think of to describe it. Their Tandoori dishes come out on a sizzling plate with the sauces on the side, and the descriptions are on point. The flavors are subtle yet intense. The sauces are perfect. Every bite of my food was tender and flavorful. I was obsessing. My spouse ordered something that he raved about but barely paid attention because I could not get enough of my sizzling chicken. We both left there and were in food comas, but not because of the volume, but because of the flavors. Please go and patronize this establishment.
