Beer battered burger! Beer battered fries! Beer! Special sauce! Dive bar! All things I love and enjoy. So naturally, I was bound to be a fan of this spot. Seating is few and tight. And there are never enough servers. But hey, it's a dive bar - it's supposed to be that way. It's a really small spot. There's lots to look at on the walls. Eclectic and cool - just like a dive bar should be. Its proximity to the Capitol (and having been featured on DDD) means it draws in its fair share of tourists. But there's also plenty of regulars and locals. The beer battered burger was good. Not the best burger I've ever had. But I'd also never had a beer battered one. So it was a cool and different thing to try. Hint: Ask for a side of their special sauce and slather it on your beer battered burger. I'm glad places like this exist. If you are in the mood for a historic dive bar that serves average diner food, this is the place for you! Don't come just for the food, the service or the drinks. But it you take them all together it's a great place. It's the kind of place you come when you either A) have been drinking, want to keep drinking but need food or B) want to start drinking while you get some food. If you come just for the food then you will have nothing to do while you wait 45 minutes for a fine, but not otherwise noteable meal. I don't want to make this review sound like a pan, I really iike the place, you just have to come in with the correct expectations or you are going to get pissy, and there is no room for pissiness in the Tune Inn! We got a couple drinks, a cheeseburger, a tuna melt and a PBR draft. $41, before tip. The bloody mary was average. Not great, not bad, just fine. The cheeseburger was the same. The menu said they serve 1/2 lbs. burgers and it looked on the small side. It was served with tater tots (score!) and it was just fine. A cheeseburger. Nothing to write home about but nothing to send back to the kitchen either. $8.50 The tuna melt was a grilled cheese with tuna in it. And I know some of you are thinking, "Duh, that's what it is supposed to be." You clearly have not had a tuna melt that exceeds expectations like many diners will surprise you with. This was tuna, a little on the sweet side, heavy on the mayo, grilled up on your choice of boring bread with american cheese and a lot of butter. It was fine. Chased the tuna melt down with a PBR draft. Like the food, the PBR met expectations. It didn't exceed them...it's a PBR, it was just fine! Bartender was friendly. Server said she had 20 years in the place and she was a bit in the weeds. Place was 3/4 full and everybody's food was coming out 45+ minutes after ordering. It's a small place so it really didn't seem that busy to warrant the service time. So here is the thing, if you are coming to have some drinks with friends and socialize, you won't care if the food comes late or isn't a home run. It's a great place to hang out and knock one back. I liked it a lot. I give it 4 stars for "the place" and 2 stars for food...so we're at a 3 up there, but I like it more than most other 3s if that makes sense. They also have the TouchTune jukebox thing which lets you control the music without leaving your table. Tune Inn exceeded my expectations, even with the three-star rating. The service was accommodating and the atmosphere was fun. The food itself was okay. I had a tuna salad, salad. The tuna was made with relish, which made it a bit sweet, which I didn't love. The ingredients, however, were fresh and salad was crisp. I also had some mystery chardonnay, which was actually pretty good considering. According to my friends, the Guy Fieri burger was a solid, but pretty average burger. My other friend had the steak salad and could tell it had a "low quality" meat. He had to pick off pieces that were inedible. However, I heard the sausage burrito was fantastic! read more

Really great cheeseburger! A burger book I read says this is a "neighborhood dive bar with an excellent burger on the menu," and it's spot on. The Tune Inn Burger is the classic, topped with their signature sauce (1000 Island-ish I think), American Cheese, and Onion Straws, with a white bun with a toothpick in it to hold the lettuce, tomato, and pickles. It's cooked how you like it, and the kitchen does a perfect medium. The burger is also served with fries, which were pretty good. You can sit at the bar or sit in the back at a table or a booth. TVs are visible in both places, so you can watch while you eat. There are tons of old photos are taxidermy on the walls too. If that creeps you out, this might not be your place. If you don't mind eating with the occasional deer or antlers on the wall, you've got to try this place, and go back again and again. Next time I'm there I'll try "Tony's Beer Battered Burger," because I don't think I've ever had a deep fried burger before. P.S. OK, so the only reason I'm giving 4 stars is that I didn't try any of the food. But, for drinks, service, and ambiance (hey, gotta love a good dive bar!), I give all the stars. Seems I always get looks when I walk into a new dive bar alone, but I got NO attitude from either Ricky or Matty(?) when asking about their draft beers. This was a place we used to frequent almost every weekend when I was a young man living on the Hill. I remember the perfectly prepared burgers and tasty french fries..and all the beers. The customer service was outstanding: the person taking my order over the phone was friendly and so was the guy who got the food for me. And everything was quick! The food itself is where my issue arises. I ordered mozzarella sticks, which were both bland and overcooked. There was no relief to be found in the marinara or ranch, both of which tasted very off. The mac and cheese wedges were similarly bland, albeit NOT overcooked. The waiter took them back and put them under a broiler for a few seconds and brought them back out. The chilli was also not hot, it wasn't even warm enough to melt the cheese on top. They also forgot the diced onion that it supposedly came with. We're wound up leaving most of it because it tasted like someone just dumped a bunch of chilli powder in it. The burgers and fries were hot but the meat was so-so and kind of gristly. Also, it was overcooked and under seasoned, as others have mentioned. Solid 3.5 stars. I come here exclusively on Monday mornings around 9am after working 12 hours when all I want is a juicy burger or fries or mozzarella sticks. And this is one of the only places that I can get that stuff so early in the morning. Service is reliable. Food always come out super hot and delicious. The only critique is the fries could use some --- read any --- seasoning. But after doctoring it up with S&P they are good. And it's pretty cheap. I'm not a stickler for hygiene, I'm really not. When I cook for others, I'm not gonna lie, I'll lick the spoon and put it right back into the pot. Alan K. thinks I'm downright gross when it comes to how long I leave food in the fridge and am still willing to eat it. I've gone to restaurants and found hair in my food or bugs and still been willing to go back. With that having said, Tune Inn is possibly the most disgusting restaurant I've ever been to, and I'm genuinely concerned about their lack of hygiene. We went for a late lunch. When the server sat us down, there was a bowl of butter and jelly packets on the table, with a crumpled up, dirty napkin in it from the previous customers. The waiter pulled the dirty napkin out of the bowl and left the butter and packets on the table for future customers to consume. We obviously did not partake. The bathroom was disgusting, and there was no soap. Like I said, we went for a late lunch to this place that is mostly a bar, so they probably hadn't seen a ton of customers during the day and weren't so busy that they couldn't check for something so critical and legally required. I really don't like the idea that the people serving and making our food were not washing their hands with soap after using the bathroom. The "all fried all the time" tasting menu we managed to cobble together at Tune Inn was an artery clogging orgy of epically-proportioned excess. As you can imagine, we enjoyed just about every last crunchy crispy bite! Over an enthralling basketball game on the many large screens, we indulged in: 1. Mozz Sticks ($6.99) - made with fresh, hand cut blocks of mozzarella, in my august opinion as a global connoisseur of mozz stix, these are actually significantly more delicious than your average frozen mozzarella stick! A+++ 2. Bowl O'Shrooms ($4.99) - beer battered with ranch dipping sauce, I was actually a bit disappointed by the exorbitant (and completely unnecessarily high) breading to actual mushroom ratio...skip this! 3. Tony's Beer Battered Burger ($9.49) - completely gimmicky, but actually surprisingly delicious. Like putting chips in your burger. You'll definitely want to try it at least once, and if you don't like the breading, you can pretty easily pull it off the deliciously juicy patty 4. Crab Cake Dinner ($16.99) - we were on a total crab cake quest the entire time we were in DC, and Tune Inn's version did not disappoint. Chock full of crab and fried crisp with tasty cole slaw and crispy fries (we requested extra crispy fries) All in all, we shortened out lives by a few years, saw a heated game and enjoyed a fun-tastic dinner! FINALLY! I planned an entire series of posts around reconsidering diners of DC after a lot of new diners have been opening up. This cultural staple and true love of mine has been lacking in recent years in the District. I want to applaud every business that has brought back this dining experience to our Nation's Capital and review all the latest additions to see if they are hurting or helping the diners of DC. Lone and behold that the best diner in DC has not only been a few miles from my house, but it's been open for over 70 years! After visiting 3 times I could review each dish or finger food, every amazingly cheap/strong drink, or my love for the staff here. Instead I will list why this diner beats the others and end with a picture worth the rest of the review. A) Every main dish (except for steak) is under $10 and will fill up the average appetite. B) It's homey, it's quirky, and has the most comfortable booths past the bars. C) Every diner has it's staple they do better than anyone else. Tune Inn's: Mozzarella Sticks. D) There are outlets at every booth perfect for charging your phone and staying a few hours. Should you go to Tune Inn?? HECK YEAH!!! It's awesome!!! It's a friendly neighborhood style bar with decent unhealthy fried food. They even fry their burgers! There are about eight beers on tap, a full bar, seating inside and outside, and a large bar. I don't see how anyone wouldn't like the place. The bartenders range from surly to extremely nice. The decorations are mostly taxidermy animals, including foxes, squirrels, a bear drinking a beer, and chandeliers made out of deer antlers. Prices on the menu are pretty reasonable for DC: about $10 for a burger and fries and around $3-4 for beer. Oh, and they have free internet. read more

After reading a few Yelp reviews, we came up with this combination: Apps: Fried Mac & Cheese Wedges & Mozzarella Sticks ( I have to agree with one of the reviews. 2.5 stars Looking for a place to eat near the capitol, I was pretty excited about the Tune Inn due to its rich history and of course the visit from Guy Fieri on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The server didn't see us for a good 15 mins but then took our appetizer order and brought us some water. I was really disappointed in the fried macaroni and cheese wedges, it was literally the cheap mac n cheese you get from the grocery store. We ordered a veggie omelet and grilled cheese as entrees. I couldn't bare how much processed cheese was incorporated into these dishes as we were hoping for REAL cheese. The grilled cheese may have been understandable but the veggie omelet was just too much. We also were hoping for some home fries but were told that they ran out right before we came in and could only serve fries at the time. I wasn't as crazy about this DDD recommendation as I normally am. It has a great neighborhood bar feel to it. Definitely a divey atmosphere with not a lot of space and a reasonably-priced menu stockpiled with comfort food. The mozzarella sticks for an appetizer were awesome. Crispy exterior, soft interior, and a solid marinara sauce. With four pieces, it's a good option for sharing but not enough for a full meal. After seeing it on the menu, I had to go for Tony's Beer Battered Burger. A deep-fried burger, how could I not try it? It was good, but somewhat underwhelming. It needed a sauce or some sort of dressing up beyond the usual cheese, lettuce and tomato. Perhaps a bbq sauce or an aioli? And I'm never a big fan of when the cheese it just thrown on top instead of melted on. That said, the meat itself was good. I was surprised how the deep-frying actually didn't have much effect on the meat itself. The fries were pretty bland though, crispy but needed some seasoning or sauce. I had this spot marked down on my to go list since I had seen it on the food network "diners, drive inn's and dives" They had the Joe's Virginia Sandwich as the must have item and that's what I had along with the mozzarella sticks. Sticks were very good. They were extra hot which is a must so the cheese just melts and twist and feels never ending while your eating. The only down side to the appetizer was that it was very greasy. The sandwich was next and I expected it to be ALOT bigger that what I got only because the sandwich was massive in TV compared to what I got. It was a average size sandwich, the meat was medium - medium well and the sauce they raved about was as advertised. The sandwich it self was on-point!!! To the buttery bread to the flavor and taste it was a great sandwich. I will add the fries were amazing as well crispy and fresh oil used by the color. The service was a little dull the server was not to helpful and was just kinda like McDonald's like "can intake your order" Place it self is small and rustic old fashion like, Kinda like an old cabin or small village bar but it works. Very divey and historic little bar located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood on Pennsylvania Ave. My bf and I happened to be on the National Mall that day, so we decided to grab a late lunch on the Hill. I ordered the Tune Inn burger (hamburger topped with Tune Inn's signature sauce, american cheese and onion straws) with bacon added. I loved how generous they were with the bacon portion. So perfect. My boyfriend ordered the Swiss Mushroom Onion burger and also really enjoyed it. I seriously hadn't had a burger that good in a long time, so I left a very happy camper. We also ordered drinks - beer for my bf (per usual) and a glass of wine for me (per usual as well). The restaurant itself is quaint, divey, and reminiscent of another time. They've been open since 1947! I loved the cozy and cute little booths. Service was good too - quick and efficient and friendly. Only thing is that they really need to use gloves in their kitchen. We sat in a back booth and could see the kitchen area and it was sort of... gross. Also, the lady carrying out my wine glass held the glass with her fingers at the top (where I put my lips on the glass) instead of by its stem, as people normally do. There were smudges all across the top of my glass. It felt so gross that I decided to use my straw to drink my wine (have to say that's the first time I've ever done that). But for the gross-ness of some parts of my experience, I would have given this place 5 stars. Besides the unsanitary conditions I witnessed, the food was amazing (and I certainly did not lose my appetite), the place is historic and perfectly divey, and we had a great time. Just revisited the Tune Inn after many years. It was the scene of a memorable early date with my husband, so we go whenever we find ourselves in town. And it did not disappoint! Husband, daughter, and I had the fried cheeseburger (yes, deep-fried), a patty melt, and an oyster po boy special. All were perfectly cooked and delicious. The fries were battered and crispy. UPDATE-Nov. 2, 2011: Talked with Lisa yesterday and the Tune MAY re-open on Friday (11/4) but likely not first thing in the morning, perhaps in the afternoon. May even be a chance it will be Saturday. Seems like news changes by the hour. By the way, the place looks great! The Tune is TEMPORARILY closed because of a fire. Extensive work is under way to get it open ASAP. They had estimated that it would reopen on Labor Day, but I heard lately that it may not be until October. The only updates that I have about the place are as follows: this Guy what's name came in and did a segment on the Tune for his Food Network show. As a result, it has now become even more of tourist destination as well as a magnet for outsiders who live nearby (Virginia and Maryland people). The second piece of news is that the Tune was again listed as one of Esquire Magazine's Top 100 Bars in the country. I wish the media would just leave this place alone before they ruin it. My only complaint is with the bathrooms- these are the smallest stalls in the world (they have a separate women's and men's bathroom) and the locks are faulty. Overall, I would recommend checking out Tune Inn if you enjoy fried foods, or for drinks at the bar. It seems like a lively place to get a drink, and the bartenders seemed really friendly. Tune Inn is a dive bar with a lot of history. You can read all about it on their menu. It's definitely dark with a masculine feel -- animal heads all over the walls and LCD TV everywhere. We tried the fried pickles ($3.99 for 5) for the first time. At first glance, it was a bit frightening how oily and battered they were. They came out piping hot, so you'll need to give them a couple of minutes to cool down. When you finally bite into it, you'll appreciate the contrast in textures and temperatures -- crispy and soft, hot and cold. The appetizer came with a ranch dipping sauce. I also had the crab cake sandwich ($11.99). The patty was fried to ensure that it stays in place with each bite. It was okay. And the fries?
