Puppy-Approved Pit Stop A quick trip to the Asheville area to grab some equipment turned into a brunch stop on the way home! With our pup in tow, we needed somewhere dog-friendly with outdoor seating -- and this place delivered. It was raining when we pulled up, but the patio was well-covered with plenty of seating. Staff even moved our table to keep us clear of the weather and made sure our seats were fully dried off before we sat down -- small touch, big impression. Our hostess greeted us with menus -- including a menu for the pup! Absolutely adorable, and such a nice touch that they cater to the four-legged family members too. Our waitress was just as sweet, friendly and on top of everything throughout the meal. We kicked things off with a "Make It Spicy" Mary and an IPA. Fried green tomatoes are a must-order for me wherever I go, and this version -- panko-crusted, served over creamy stone-ground goat cheese grits with red pepper coulis and fresh basil -- lived up to every word of that description. Crispy, creamy, with a nice pop of flavor: proper Southern cooking. For mains, I went with the sweet & spicy fried chicken & waffles -- hand-breaded crispy tenders drizzled with sriracha honey over golden buttermilk waffles -- and it did not disappoint. Sweet, savory, perfectly crisp, with waffles that were light and fluffy with a gorgeous golden crust. I cleared my plate. My partner, on the other hand, wasn't a fan of his bourbon peppercorn glazed meatloaf (a scratch-made beef and chorizo blend) -- so much so that he left most of it and said flatly, "It's gross, I'd never order that again." That and the sweet potato pancake are amazing Here's the things I haven't loved: - hit or miss on food. Like I said, chicken & waffles are amazing but we've tried a few other menu items that have been dry & lacked flavor. I got the whiskey & onion smash burger last time and it was pretty dry. My husbands chicken sandwich wasn't great either, and my daughter barely touched her kids burger because it was so dry - we went in specifically for my grandmothers 78th birthday (which I wrote on the reservation notes) and I also let the manager know separately. No mention was made of a birthday, and when I asked for a bday dessert they dropped off a boxed up dessert at the table with again, no mention of a birthday. Started the meal with a mimosa flight which was lovely - really unique flavors including the new strawberries and cream which was my favorite followed by the blueberry lavender. My husband had the shrimp and grits on recommendations from the server which he liked but wasn't thrilled with. He's had better at some other spots. The flavor was lacking. Tupelo Honey is a place I've been to a few times over the years, both the downtown Asheville location which is the original, and this southside location which is closer to Hendersonville. This location is more spacious and easier to get a table at, but in my experience, the food downtown is a little better. On this particular occasion, we had a bigger group, so this was definitely the better choice. It was a busy day, as I think it often is here. The restaurant felt pretty hectic though, and we soon learned they were out of a few menu items and the soda fountain was also busted. Yikes! Didn't bother me as a tea drinker, but certainly tripped up plenty of other people. Our waitress did an OK job serving our large party, but we did have our share of struggles getting things. On one occasion, I just got up and got my own tea refill. Wasn't for lack of her trying, they just seemed short staffed, kind of common these days. I understand. No stars off for that. The food was pretty good, most people were happy with their dish. I ordered a nashville hot chicken and waffles thing. The only issue I had with it, is that the menu made it sound like the waffles were actually being made by pressing mac n cheese into a waffle iron (something I've seen elsewhere). Turns out, they were standard waffles, topped with some mac n cheese and the other accoutrements. While that wasn't a dealbreaker for me, I was really wanting that mac and not as much on board with waffles. In the end, I ate most of it, and was fairly satisfied. Fairly satisfied. I think that is the theme of this review. We would go back again, but, in a town with so many great foods like Asheville, it won't be a priority! read more

You just can't go wrong with Tupelo, regardless of the location. I love that you can make reservation here and are seated promptly. Food is always great, and the variety of drinks can satisfy anyone's taste buds. There is both outdoor and indoor seating at this location. The outdoor areas are mostly shaded with a few tables near the end of the canopy getting direct sunlight at a certain angle. Service is efficient, and waiters are attentive with water refills.
