Walked the Ecusta Trail and this is at the end (for now) so we couldn't wait to try it. The little extra garnishes on each drink and the effort to make each drink special was the perfect beginning for the meal. Every single item we ordered had an extra special touch. It was very refreshing and we couldn't wait to see what was next. The biscuits were served warm and not too dense with a side of chicken juice, flaky salt and sesame seeds. Hot sauce and syrup on the table. The deviled eggs were pickled and devine! Wish there was more on the plate , we gobbled them up in no time. We didnt feel rushed. The waitress, Amber was super attentive and almost didn't notice her filling our water or removing soiled plates. The extra crispy fried chicken was amazing. Almost too pretty to eat but we dug in! The lemon and dill.was a great touch. Not overcooked either. The pickled watermelon was different and simply amazing! A must try for sure. The Mac and cheese was creamy, cheesy, perfectly salted amd served in the cutest cast iron- nice touch. The meatloaf.is very different with pulled beef, smoked and pressed. Totally a new way to eat meatloaf. Thought it could have used a little more seasoning but thats being super picky. Mashed potatoes perfect we ctly creamy and broccoli not overcooked at all. Overall I feel this place isn't bad, but needs some adjustments. Seating is a little too cramped in the corner and ribeyes were overcooked for both parties who ordered. Our server was stretched across a lot of tables but did an admirable job and was very professional and pleasant. Biggest annoyance was the hostess failing to communicate that it was a birthday celebration to our server. I discreetly advised to her and the other hostess, as well as who the individual in our party was away from the group and she acknowledged that she would pass it along. When nothing happened, I asked the server and he was bewildered and expressed disappointment. Little things make a big difference. read more

I suppose that it is nice place to hear live music at 70, 80, 90+ dB (yes, I have the app in my smartphone), but not to have any conversations with friends and family. IMHO, there is no reason to amplify live music in a small room, especially at brunchtime on Sunday. The menu's author was unnecessarily florid (IMHO again) but everyone found the basic food on their plates to be good. Obviously short handed that morning. Such a great spot for an area of town with very few options for dining! I stopped in for lunch between appointments and was super impressed with the food, staff and overall vibe of this great hidden gem in Horseshoe. The house burger and salad I had were both made to order crafted by a kitchen staff that truly cares on how the food looks and tastes! Make sure to order a fresh squeezed lemonade and a cookie or one of the 5 rotating homemade ice cream flavors! They have a huge patio area with additional seating in the backyard area where chickens were roaming free grubbing out. This place is amazing! We forgot to make a reservation and ended up having to wait 90 mins to be seated but it was a busy Friday night. The hostess was a red headed girl and she was very sweet. We laughed together for a little bit over the fact that I forgot to make a reservation! I needed that kindness :) We hung out outside and had a few drinks. The drinks were strong and the bartender was a gem. I forgot her name but the woman with the black hair. I got the pimento cheese burger and my husband got the fried chicken dinner with watermelon. Seemed very unorganized and the hostess was a bit rude and unfriendly, which set the tone for the remainder of the meal. We wouldn't typically leave the Asheville area at dinner time but were excited to give Root and Bone a try for our anniversary and to eat with real utensils and plates. (Asheville-area restaurants were closed following Helene destruction.) The reception was warm and welcoming and the dining room brightly lit and nicely decorated. Our server Jes was very knowledgeable, explaining every dish and checking in at just the right times. The wine list is short but offers something for everyone. Our appetizers were amazing! The beet tartare and souther falafel were very tasty and a nice combination. For entrees one of us enjoyed the short rib meatloaf. I was looking forward to the grilled ribeye, however, after ordering medium well, if first came out as rare then after the kitchen's second try it arrived as medium rare just as my dinner companion was finishing their meal. I took most of the ribeye home and grilled it to the perfect temperature the next day and found it very juicy and tender. We finished with the brownie ala mode that was just as rich and creamy (and tasty) as it looked. We enjoyed our dinner and expect to return again with friends. I would give five stars had an actually been able to enjoy my entree during the meal. read more

When the management of a restaurant allows dogs inside the dining area- that is NOT a service dog ( no vest marking it as such, owner offered no i.d. certifying the dog as a "service dag". Folks- we have a health code and hygiene rules that ALL resturants are legally boind to follow in order to keep your food safe. I love dogs. Have 2 that are like my kids. Ate here for the first time tonight; here is a detailed assessment of the experience. The restaurant was clean and fairly well decorated although slightly noisy (because it's popular) I ordered an old fashioned, which was reasonably priced and concocted with a fine well bourbon. We ordered the sweet corn soufflé, which was excellent. We ordered two, and one was more well done and more "cakey" the other was less cooked and more "gooey" so perhaps there is no continuity to how You will receive it, but either was fantastic. It comes with a dollop of cream cheese on top, which I opted to get on the side as I'm not wild about sour cream. There is a little bit of misleading description about the table water and we accidentally ordered bottled water by choosing one of the two types proffered: sparkling and still (still doesn't mean tap as we thought) so $. My father ordered the trout, which he loved. My wife and I ordered the chicken pot pie, which can be hit or miss at some restaurants. In this case we loved it. A fairly small skillet, containing copious amounts of chicken, a wonderful broth/gravy base, and a nice flaky filo type dough top, nicely toasted. The pie contained peas and carrots and they were fresh and tasty. My mother ordered the half fried chicken and she loved it; there was some left over and I tried some, and I have to say it was the best fried chicken I have ever eaten; lightly breaded, not heavy like KFC or such, and marinated in some brine which tasted like nothing I have ever experienced and delicious. Bonus, Tuesdays the chicken dinner is half price cooked in three different ways. Wednesdays are half price whiskey, which I would have loved to have experienced because they have Blanton's bourbon (my favorite) which was 22$ for a 2 oz pour, so take advantage of the Wednesday deal. A slight downside is my mother assumed the chicken came with a side so she ordered mashed potatoes and the carrots, which were both about 8$ extra respectively. One other item of note there is a kitchen staff appreciation fee assigned to the bill automatically, which don't have a problem with I guess, but it was but 6$ on top of the 25% I gave the waitress, so just be aware. The waitress was very busy but was pleasant and fairly efficient given the amount of tables she was juggling. They had BBQ ribs on the menu, which I would have loved to have tried, but will next time for sure ; did I mention the carrots were amazing as well. read more

We've now been to R&B several times and every time is better than the last. We love to dine at the bar because the staff behind the bar are always personable and spot on with recommendations. The dirty martinis are filthy - just the way we like them - and paired with blue cheese stuffed olives. Match those martinis with humor and chuckles from manager Jonathan as he walks by or comes behind the bar to greet guests, and it's a perfect place just for cocktails alone. But when the food is so good, it's hard to just have cocktails even with the cool cocktails they offer. Each visit, we have tried something new and the dishes never disappoint. I love the unique and upscaled southern cuisine and the chefs have hit it out of the park with this place. The foodies in our house are glad to have a new place to frequent. We love the apps - The BLT with the pork belly is our favorite is off the chart delicious and the chicken biscuits are quite fantastic as well. The shrimp and grits are exceptional, with the shrimp perfectly cooked with andouille, tomato confit and that delectable au jus. Damn near perfect! But let's talk fried chicken. I don't like anything with a bone but I will pluck that meat off and get the bone out of my sight just to enjoy that juicy deliciousness and the mind-blowing crispy skin. It's the best part. If you love fried chicken, go get some! You won't regret it. I was not a big fan of the meatloaf, not because there is anything wrong with it, short ribs are just not my thing but my husband loved it. As for the salads, the wedge is wonderful especially with chicken added, but the star of the show is the peach caprese salad. It is so unique and the flavors combined are perfection. Fresh peaches, fried pimento and green tomatoes make it perfect meal all in itself. If you still have room or the inclination, the desserts are to die for as well. The banana pudding crème brûlée is worth every calorie and so is the gooey brownie. We finally got to try and WOW! Life is short, don't skip dessert. read more

The food and service were fine--nothing over the top, but solid. The atmosphere inside was nice, but I have serious concerns about the outdoor seating. The tables and chairs are placed way too close to the edge of the porch. The drop-off is about three inches, and there's literally no space to safely push your chair back to stand up. The entire time, I had to keep a close eye on my 3-year-old, worried that if she swung her chair back, it could tip right off the edge. Unfortunately, this is exactly what happened to me: I scooted back without realizing the chair leg had slipped past the edge, and I fell backwards off the porch. Staff gave me a bag of ice, but no one actually came out to check on me afterward. We paid our bill, and I later had to go to the hospital for an X-ray. Thankfully, there was no fracture, but I did end up with a ligament sprain in my elbow. I'm not someone who typically makes a fuss or seeks compensation, but I do want to make this known: the seating arrangement is unsafe, especially for families with small children. A simple fix--like pulling the tables further back from the edge or adding a barrier--could prevent someone else from getting seriously hurt. read more

Arriving at this roadside eatery, it instantly reminded me of one of those great finds on a drive in the countryside, a roadhouse in England or New Zealand. The stone walls gave way to a large pivoting glass door framed by a red wall. This place was modern and rooted in its setting next to the Ecusta Trail and a crossroads along the Brevard Highway. We had to wait for an outdoor table on the covered deck for weekend brunch. Next time...reservations. Hens flitted about on the lawn and greeted us table side. We both had the burgers which were tick and juicy and served with pickled tomato, red onion, sweet pickle slices and lettuce. We upgraded our sides for $2 to get a salad and fries. Homemade sauces were brought to our table. The mildly warm red sauce was wonderful. The other cruet had a sweet bourbon maple glaze that would have been great on waffles which is also on the brunch menu. We will definitely return. We know of Jeff McInnis from his Top Chef days and have been to many of his amazing restaurants in Miami. We wanted to try his Root & Bone and were very pleased. We had the fish and fried chicken - both were excellent - the only thing that was subpar was the fried chicken breast - this was dry and chewy, but the leg, wing and thigh were excellent. Usually, I find a restaurant & order the same dish. Not true for Root & Bone! I'm not a meatloaf fan, but theirs is unique & wonderful. They stack layers of pulled meat, then put weight on it to press it together for a day or two, then add an interesting sauce (different than catsup). Strawberry goat cheese salad topped with a protein - yum! Friendly, enthusiastic bartender making great craft cocktails. Whiskey in an antique teacup? Just fun! Part of the building was a former dairy, so there's lovely stonework walls. The owner's father apparently owned an R&B club in Miami and it's evidenced in the mural of musicians in the bar & dining area. The ambient music was a reflection of this, so I got my groove on. The service was excellent, thanks to Maggie. When we walked in, the place was quite chilly, but after informing our hostess, the temp ramped up & we could finally remove our coats. The food: buttermilk biscuits -amazing! Served with pork salt, sesame seeds & chicken gravy, which I passed on & instead used the maple syrup. The beet tartare was not what we expected. The beets were mashed with some seasoning & served with homemade potato chips? Skip the chips. Beets are best when roasted & drizzled with a citrus vinaigrette. Period. Fried chicken: omg! Normally, I avoid fried anything, but it's a big deal here & it's deserved. The chicken is marinated for 48 hrs. in-wait for it-SWEET TEA! Then fried & dusted with lemon dust. What you get is so tender, juicy & delicious that my husband nearly stole my chicken breast! Had a great Malbec for $11 & the final bill was $60. In a time when you can't get a decent casual meal for less than $100., we were ecstatic. So, guess where we'll go next time we're in Hendersonville? I let the waitress know and she brought some hot honey sauce or something - that helped, but really they all were incredibly bland. Also, add at least a side to the the chicken dinner. Really wanted to like this place, but... There are two sides, one standard dining room and a space that was more of a sports-bar vibe. We sat there and it was pretty loud (not horrible, just loud). The service was very good. Understaffed like most places these days but the servers were on it. (I'd bet they are pretty tired at the end of the day) Where R&B fails is the food. With the exception of the beet tartare, the food was disappointing. BBQ sauce was overly sweet. But , if not for that, everything was tasteless. For the price, one should expect better. read more

Excellent dinner tonight, on their third night open. Ambience is lovely, and as the night went on and a storm passed over, it was incredibly cozy with all of the big windows and soft lighting. Service at the bar was welcoming and very enjoyable. We ordered a couple appetizers (deviled eggs and BLT, both were excellent) and a couple salad entrees. The timing between dishes was perfect and everything was so fresh. The full chicken breast added to the salad was cooked to perfection. The menu was promising so I really wanted to like this place, but unfortunately the premier pricing was not backed up by the experience. The ambiance felt like they were going for eclectic, but instead came off cheap. It was loud, and difficult to hear one another talking even with a mostly empty dining room. Our waiter hardly came by to check on us, but then made sense with the automatic 20% gratuity for a party of 6. We watched the bartender put an ice cube into a drink with her bare fingers. But by far the most disappointing part was the food. With the higher prices I was expecting to be blown away. The side mashed potatoes were $9 for a tiny portion. The fried chicken was not crispy and lacked salt, like most of the food. Overall nothing was overtly terrible or inedible, but wasn't even close to justifying the high prices. read more

I wanted to like this place more than I did. Heard good things about the fried chicken, and the menu, though small, looked interesting. Unfortunately, the food wasn't. I'm not sure the chicken was ever brined, absolutely no flavor beyond chicken there. I think they just coat it with plain flour and cornstarch before tossing it in the grease. No salt, no seasoning, only a little color. Pretty dismal honestly, especially considering how many fast food places and grocery stores do it much better. The hot honey was hot honey. I personally don't like it, just seems like a good way to ruin hot sauce and honey at the same time. The "lemon dust" added nothing, I'm not sure it was even there. I know these were to add flavor, but fried chicken shouldn't need so much help. A little salt would have been better. The wife had the trout, pesto on the side. The pesto went untouched after tasting it. Heavy on the nuts and again light on flavor, though it would have texturally overpowered the trout. The cheese and corn souffle and the bacon board were also pretty mediocre. A little effort in building flavor would go a long way, but it seems all the effort goes into presentation. Too bad I don't take pics of my food, I just eat it. The atmosphere was forgettable, honestly I don't remember what it looked like inside, other than maybe a grandmother's house. Service was whatever, didn't stand out one way or the other either. They take your order, bring your food. Yay. If you enjoy restaurants for the social media potential, you'll probably like Root and Bone, as evidenced by many of these reviews. If you actually enjoy food for it's own sake, you'll want to skip this place. read more

Pros: Conveniently located right off US 64 in Horseshoe; decent menu for the area. Wait staff friendly. Con's: food presentation not appealing; (trout' filet skin side up?) , drink prices outrageous (charging $2 for ice in an $18 drink?) ; room too noisy to hold a decent conversation or even hear the wait person. , tables too close for comfortable seating. First visit was disappointing and left a negative impression. Will probably give them another try later after they hopefully shake out the negatives and refine the positive. read more
