I give Tupelo 3 stars. It's A-OK. This is a bar in North Beach that serves Southern food and is known for having live music most nights of the week and dance karaoke on Tuesday nights. I met up with my friends here around 6pm on a Thursday. At that time, we and one random guy sitting at the bar were the only customers. This is more of a late night joint -- the bar is open until 2am seven nights a week. They also open early (10am) on Saturday and Sunday for brunch. My buddy, who lived nearby in Telegraph Hill for several years, likes their chicken and waffles ($12). They serve all sorts of Southern food and it's affordable. Examples include tater tots ($5), fried okra and pickle chips ($8), po' boys ($10-11), BBQ pulled pork sandwiches ($10), and shrimp and grits ($8 regular, $13 large). We got beer and hung out for a little bit. The interior was kind of divey, but service was good. The bartender greeted us and was friendly. This place has a long bar along with a variety of high-tops and standard four-tops in the dining room. There's a big stage for live bands and karaoke and they have both HD projection screens and smaller screens to watch sports and other stuff. Admittedly, this isn't my scene, but it does look like a fun place to go when out in North Beach. read more

Went here last week and am disappointed at how much the drinks have increased in price and the fact that they charge an automatic 20% gratuity.... seriously? And no notice of this from the bartenders or any signs? Why are the drinks here more expensive than nicer bars in the area when all you're getting is a basic drink and a run down dive bar aesthetic. A++ customer service and management. I placed a Sunday evening order for some empanadas, and Uber Eats malfunctioned, never sending a driver to pick up my food (it said that the food was on its way, but never displayed a map/tracker, and it provided no contact for a driver). As such, I had to get in contact with Tupelo directly (this was my only option, as Uber no longer lets you contact them directly). The restaurant staff was incredibly nice and accommodating. The owner got on the phone and offered to have it delivered to my neighborhood on his own dime. When the food arrived, there was a handwritten note apologizing for the blunder (even though it was definitely not the restaurant's fault) and articulating that they had included extra food since they had sold out of one of the items I ordered. I was able to heat the empanadas in the oven, and they were still super tasty reheated! It's been a hell of a year, but this type of kindness restored some of my faith in humanity. 13/10 would dine here again (in-person/pickup). read more

There's a lot of reasons I like Tupelo, but the reason I love Tupelo is because DJ Purple is the best karaoke host of all time. 1. He doesn't have time for anything but karaoke. He literally has signs posted up all around his booth saying he can't talk to you. 2. He backs up your song as the sexiest of sax men, and he's got SKILLS on that saxaphone. 3. Just when you thought he was a one-instrument act, he'll also come in with harmony vocals on selected songs, as well as the keyboard, tambourine, and more. 4. The lights, smoke, and general vibe is better than you could ever hope thanks to this man, DJ Purple. Other Reasons I Like Tupelo: 1. There are beer and shot specials, and the bartenders are fast and cool. 2. The bouncers thought I was French for some reason, and I prefer to think it's because I'm cool and well-dressed, rather than because I'm effeminate and look like I'd surrender easily. 3. I've stopped by Tupelo a handful of times, both pre- and post- pandemic and I'd say I'm a fan! There is nothing fancy or special about this place, I usually stick to beers and shots here. Certain nights host certain events, though I only recall Tuesday Karaoke night which is definitely a lot of fun and something I would go back to with the right friends. Overall, I enjoy Tupelo. DO NOT GO HERE. I (stupidly) left my purse in the bathroom and it was turned into the bar by a good samaritan, with my wallet inside. When i got my purse from the lost and found a bartender had stolen my wallet and attempted to make purchases with my credit cards. Security dragged our friend out if the bar in a chokehold for no reason. My friend tried to help but she also got kicked out. They have no respect for friends helping friends. Also, this man was weirdly videotaping and groping girls at the bar. We also tried to address this but security was too focused on our innocent friend. Truly sickening. This place is a mess! I have had my cell phone and my credit card and my id stolen here once already. And last night I had a second round where my wallet which had my id, credit card, and other things was picked again. I came here once with my date, and manically his 10,000 dollar watch just broke and fell on the ground. Luckily a friend saw it and called it out. There are regular pickpockets in this crowd, who prey upon the ones either drinking or with a date. I do not understand why this place has no cc camera, no way to control this. It's frustrating! Filing a complaint with the local authorities is useless too. I suggest just do not come here till this place learns it's lesson and hires someone who protects the patrons. read more

I was rolling with a Group Of Yelpers and this was our third stop. This place was pure Fun !!! The Vibe was very Positive and the Prescription was Karaoke. We had some Jamison Shots and some Micro Brews. Our Yelp group being very Festive some of the Group got up and Sang some Karaoke . There are some very good Karaoke Singers that hang out at Tupelo . So good they have the songs memorized and they sound very professional . They serve Southern Food but we didn't try any that night . Definitely Next time. Super chill bar in North Beach with live music and a laid-back southern vibe. Less bro-ey than nearby watering holes. It's aged some in the years since it opened but still a solid NB bar. Get some fried okra to share. I'm not typically a fan of okra but when they're fried like they are at Tupelo, they are delicious and perfect with beer. No slime but plenty of crunch. Other Southern staples like po'boys, shrimp & grits, and chicken & waffles round up the menu among other items. Dance karaoke on Tuesdays is so much fun! I'm a day late. I so wanted to be FTR. I'm TTR. Word - Occupy Tupelo! Barely a week old, a foundling. But from stock that guarantees - Tupelo isn't just a town in Mississippi anymore. The experience brought by Mark in the back and Teague pouring your libations by itself exceeds most similar pairings. Southern cooking with San Francisco flair. In North Beach. Who'd have thunk it? I was only able to stay for a short visit (this time), but while I did I had the good fortune to sample the shrimp and grits (grits so smooth, with just the right spicy balance. shrimp perfect) and bites of the signature burger with waffle fries. The menu isn't extensive, but covers pretty much whatever you might be craving whilst on a visit or a crawl through this cool part of town. I hear there's going to be the coming out party next week. Tupelo has everything I never knew I wanted in karaoke and now I don't know if I can go back. Inflatable guitars for shredding on during solos? Never desired them before but now it seems so obvious that they're necessary. Smoke that shoots out behind you during particularly rawkus numbers? I neeeeeeed those dramatic moments! The amazing DJ Purple, a dude who plays sax along to your song when appropriate (and let's face it, it's always appropriate)? In the immortal words of Leanne Rimes--how do I live without you? And not just a sax, you guys. There are wigs and sweet shades involved as well. A short clip of him playing along to Careless Whisper might be my most liked video on Instagram, and with good reason. It's genius. The song list is smaller than most spots but it's well curated and carries a lot that you don't normally see, particularly in dance categories. First time I've ever had the chance to sing along to Robyn outside of my car! And if I wanted to do Pulp's Common People? Then by jove I could get my Jarvis on, no problem. I seriously love it so so much. The crowd is fun (even the folks I didn't know were great) and the bartenders are as well. Staff regularly got up to sing and I didn't go outside of my usual gin and tonic for beverages but they were good and strong (deceptively strong, I was pretty ouchie the next morning as I pulled myself together to get to the airport). Get ready for us in August, Tupelo! I'll be rolling up with my crew again and ready to slow jam with DJ Purple and his sweet sweet sax. read more

My kind of place as it is dance karaoke so the songs are more upbeat! Both times been here were on a weeknight; a Yelper brought us here after a YEE so I brought other yelpers again. Half full on weeknights is a good thing if you don't want crowds. However, it was still pretty popping fun! And, the wait for drinks or to get your karaoke song in is pretty quick. I can imagine this place being packed on the weekend considering its location. Inside the place looks like a larger and brighter dive bar except with a stage for singing and a live karaoke DJ. The DJ sings along if needed, and even plays a music instrument if it is in the song! How fun is that?! There are a bunch of song folders but the list is not extensive - nor overwhelming - with popular songs and somewhat up to date. There is a large projection screen and TVs all around to help you with the words. You choose a song, write it down and deposit into a small bin container by the DJ set. Then, you wait until the DJ announces it's your turn to sing. There is no payment required but donations are accepted. Note I've noticed a higher number of rap and hip-hop songs performed here but the singers are definitely not urban (have you ever seen a middle-aged/retiree rapping before?) which makes it fun for everybody. read more

Located next to many other bars within the same street and its vicinity, this one stands out because it's placed right in the middle of them all! They offer beer, cocktails and fast food kind-of-food! Don't expect to hold a conversation when chilling, however, because it gets extremely loud and you'll be stressing your throat! Bar review: I can always count on something going on at Tupelo when I'm out bar hopping or showing out-of-town friends around. I absolutely love it when there's live music here. I've visited during the week when there's been a solid crowd when other bars are empty and slow. I've also visited on weekends when it's very popping. A group of us Elite Yelpers visited after an event on a random weekday (Tuesday or Wednesday I believe) and had a blast singing and listening to karaoke. Tupelo is truly a dependable nightlife stop in North Beach! I recently misplaced my backpack containing shoes and a Christmas gift I purchased earlier during a night out on the town. The incredible staff kept it safe in a cabinet for me. In fact, they have a very large lost and found area. (That means something to me-- they sincerely care about their patrons and their belongings) The following day the daytime staff promptly gave the backpack back to me and I thoroughly thanked them. The bartender simply said "If I lost my backpack with high heels and a Christmas gift, I would certainly want someone to make sure it returned to me" --bottom line: this bar is staffed with good folks! read more

The bouncer even expressed he could almost guarantee my license was legitimate but was given instructions to not allow in IDs from Arizona.
