Horrible experience. Instead of the usual 2 hr round trips, it took me 4 round trips from Santa Cruz to this Salinas location (2 hr round trip each time) to complete the process of buying a new handgun (Eschelon 4.OC). Why? Because the sales counter people expect newbie gun customers to be experts in the DROS background paperwork requirements. Turner's needs to have clear instructions for both sales and customers as to what is required from each party. Like, why is a current CA fishing license okay for address verification, but not my address on a current CA hunting license? Which I brought in. WTF?! I had to pay an extra $14.30 for the clerk to scan my CDFW online fishing license to create a duplicate license for me to physically sign. After the extra time and costs I incurred to overcome the sales team's lack of explicit customer communication, he had the gall to ask me if I wanted his help in buying 9mm ammo and new holster. I will never spend another nickle in a Turner's Outdoorsman store again. Back to Bass Pro for me. read more

went about 3,4 days to buy ammo and it went very well. I go in yesterday to buy some more ammo and got denied by the STORE Manager simply because my name was too long and they did not want to run my name at all as i told them it needed to be ran a certain way in the system or else it would not go through. I told them I had no problem paying the $5 fee as they told me there's a chance it might not go through. Told me to contact the DOJ, which I did that's why I told them it needed to be ran a certain way. read more

I have done two transfer to god sons here and they both went very smoothly. Kay did one of the on Saturday and she was thorough, friendly and knowledgeable. Her service standard was what is should be for every employee. Selection is huge and I almost bought a gun I want which they had, a Ruger Ranch Gen 2. The also had a H&K VP 9...Temptation was strong for sure. Prices were fair and cheap. I have to come back in a week and half to do another transfer to my niece. I hope Kat is working Saturday again. The saleswoman immediately tried to upsell my husband on gear he didn't ask for, and when we declined, she had the nerve to call him a "beginner fisher" despite him having 20 years of experience. I saw an advertisement from Turner's for a pistol. I went to the store to buy it. There were only two people working the firearm counter and like 20 people waiting in line. I asked if they had the pistol. If they did, I would have waited. I was told I had to take a number and wait. I took a number and proceeded to wait for an hour before my number was finally called. I again inquired whether they had the pistol. I was told "no." I asked if I could order it at the regular price. I was again told, simply "no." This was my first, and will certainly be my last experience with Turner's. read more

I tried again today because I needed ammo and no one else had it. This encounter was MUCH different. While looking at the ammo, a new manager named "Chad,]" greeted me right away and asked if I needed help. This had never happened to me at Turner's before. He was extremely helpful and quick. I asked him if something had changed at the store because service was exponentially better. I didn't tell him that I had actually called and spoken with Turner's corporate offices because we need a good gun store in Salinas. Seem like corporate listened. Chad mentioned that both the manager and assistant manager--as well as several employees--had been replaced. He said they were aware of the problems in the past and were trying to fix them. The staff takes time to make sure all your questions and concerns are met with time and patience. I've dealt with Chris at the gun counter since my first firearm purchasing experience he made me feel welcome and made the process smooth and easy. I pre ordered my firearm and have contacted the store multiple times ( bugging them ) I'm sure because I've called before the expected date it was supposed to show up. I called the Turner's store in Modesto to ask if they had some ammo i was looking for that had been advertised in their weekly sales ad. The guy on the phone told me they had plenty. I drove from Salinas (local store was sold out) all the way to Modesto, only to have one of the staff say that another employee had purchased that particular ammo the night before! All things considered it's a good spot. You'll see a lot of people lately complaining about waiting but there was a huge flood of people buying guns in CA before the tax went up. Then lots of people who (myself included) had id's that didn't 100% match their car registration or whatever doc CA requires while doing the background check. Bottom line buying guns is a slow pain in the ass nowadays. You got ten people in the store at once and they all want guns and each gun purchase takes like 20 minutes not much to do there. The store on Davis Rd. in Salinas has some deceptive practices. I cancelled a layaway after six days and should have only had to pay a 5% cancellation fee because I cancelled within 10 days as my layaway paperwork stated but they took 30% and told me it was store policy even though the paperwork stated that 30% was charged only after 10 days. Nobody mentioned this at the time of purchase.Buyer beware, it's not what they say but what they don' say. I'll never buy anything from Turners Outdoorsman again. These guys are extremely Slow. Three at the counter one helping customers the other two shooting the shit and stocking shelves. Nobody asked if I had a question. They walk by ignoring you. The ones shooting the shot were 150 pounds overweight. Morbidly obese and obviously Not outdoorsmen whom are working in a store specifically for outdoorsmen. DO NOT BUY A GUN HERE! You're better off driving a few hours to somewhere that understands how to run a business rather than wait 2 hours to be able to look at the guns and then wait another 2-4 hours when you go to pickup. What a joke! When I arrived to pick up my already purchased guns they were on number 55, 1.5 hours later they were on 63, 2.5 hours later on number 66, with 3 guys working behind the counter! I waited over 3.5 hours to simply pickup a purchase I had already paid for and waited 10 days for (listening to a group of employees laughing in the break room the entire time) before they got to my number, which was only 20 past the number they were on when I arrived. They need to have one employee dedicated to pickups and the other two can deal with all of the people who want to look at 20 guns and not purchase any. Their system is ridiculous. It is broke. They need to fix it. Either limit the amount of time each customer has with a sales representative and/or have one person dedicated to "releases"/pickups! The manager, Brandon (who was hiding in the back the whole 4 hours I was there waiting to pickup) isn't any better than the sales people. He said, "if you don't want to wait you can go somewhere else, all of the employees are new." Really? Sounds like an issue with management if you have that much turnover and you aren't on the floor helping your team. This place is slow as molasses! If you're in California, make sure you know all of the rules that you're being held to even when purchasing ammunition. I have purchased ammo there many times with no issue. Yet go in there one day to purchase it and got a hold of some teenager behind the counter. Instead of telling me everything that I would need in order to purchase the ammunition, it was spoonfed to me to the point where I had to make four individual trips back-and-forth to get different pieces of information and identification that he claimed I needed after my fourth trip I was denied by the DOJ to buy ammo Because my current address wasn't the same as the address that my guns were registered to even though I lived in California, it took four trips back-and-forth for this guy to tell me that. Again, extremely slow! If you're looking to buy a gun, you better pack a lunch you're gonna be there for hours. These guys stand there and shoot the crap and hold conversations and let the line build and build and build. I do not recommend this place at all. I'm not sure if all the turners are this way. I've had my worst retail experience in this store, so that's something to remember. The staff is supremely unhelpful. There's not even an attempt being made to help you - I've been told to do this, and the rest is your problem. I had to beg to get the price on a showroom floor item. They happily send you from associate to associate so they don't have to deal with you. They told me they would help me load an item into the truck (I asked because I knew I wouldn't be able to by myself). Then after purchasing the item told me they won't after all. They just found out that that's against their policy. What do I do now? Well, you see that's not their problem. Please save your money and go elsewhere. The man behind the counter who I believe is a manager has told me several times that they often never see the ammo on the ads. "The ads come out of corporate!". 5/22/2024 Walked in around 12:15 to purchase ammo, I was only Customer waiting, tall white employee was re-arranging Kershaw knives, no greeting no hi, no acknowledgment, I ask if I needed a number, tall white employee rearranging Kershaw knives says yes, I'm only customer at counter, I get a ticket then waited, 3 other employees walk out of break room and hang around counter behind rifles, the 3 employees behind counter talking to each other laughing having a good time, I'm waiting patiently, 3 employees notice I'm only customer behind counter, no greeting, no hi, no acknowledgment. Tall white employee rearranging Kershaw knives finally instructs one of the 3 employees to help me, female employee that helped me was not as happy and cordial as she was with her coworkers. She helps me and starts to become pleasant. My purchase completed. I'm hoping tall white employee rearranging Kershaw knives is not racist and only greets and acknowledges white customers, maybe he is just not friendly or just didn't want to be burden with me. Customer service here is hit or miss, hopefully your experience was positive but with only Guns and Ammo store here in Salinas they have no competition here, Customer service is not a priority, with all the laws and restrictions California residents our dealing with , you would hope that Turners would take this opportunity to treat and value their customers, hopefully maybe in the future before this store is forced to close because of lack of leadership, management and customer service. read more

I was just passing through town and saw Turner's off the freeway and decided to check it out with the Wife. I was shopping the whole Bay Area for a Henry .44 Cal Big Boy X Carbine and found that it was difficult to find anywhere. I guess I was lucky this time because it was available when I asked. The paperwork was easy, the service was fast and polite. I am a Veteran and they gave me a discount on top of the great price they offered. They have a AR heavy supply with shotguns and a sprinkling of lever actions , I didn't notice any handguns but I am sure they have a supply of them. I have read some earlier negative reviews and I believe they may have fixed what ever problem they had because my experience was a 5 star. So not surprised to see this place has plenty of bad reviews. Here goes what I experienced dealing with turners . So I decided I wanted to purchase a rifle. I go to Turners and ask to take the firearm safety certificate test. A little background on me . I have owned guns and rifles for over 20 years I am up to date on laws and regulations on guns and gun control . I take the test . Very basic questions . I turn it in to the gun counter where a young lady grades my test in a very fast manner as if she is in a hurry . She looks around as if unsure what to do checks off 8 wrong answers which is a failed test . I scratch my head in confusion . I ask which answers I got wrong to review . She won't let me review my test . No problem ok thank you. I leave and take the test a few days later at another gun store . I did not prepare or read any information regarding the questions as I assumed she made a mistake grading my test . Well what do you know I take the test answer all the answers exactly the same as the prior test that was a fail at turners and I passed and only got 3 wrong out of 30 ! . I'm not saying I got all the answers right on the previous test but I know it would have been enough to pass . So I decided to call the manager and inform him of what happened . His first instinct was to argue with me and before even hearing me out he says " we can grade those test by memory we do so many " Really !? So explain to Me how I took the same exact test days later and passed with the same exact answers ? No studying !! At that point this MANAGER is a lost cause to deal with .
