We hiked and saw shows and live animals and my boyfriend still says going to Twist and Shout was the best part of our vacation. This place is MASSIVE and the photos on Yelp don't do it justice. Not only are there tons and tons of unique records, but they also have books, toys, and other pop culture media that is sort of overwhelming to go through since there are so many options. If you're looking for an obscure record, chances are they have it. After all, they had an entire section of Tim Curry albums I didn't even know existed. They had so many NRBQ albums that I had never seen before and we were able to pick up a vinyl version of this album we love that a band no one has ever heard of but we saw in concert last month recorded. They have expensive but rare box sets too (looking at you, $172 A Star Is Born collection). The staff is friendly and patient. There's cd listening stations if you are still into collecting CDs too. Definitely check this place out to add stuff to your collection! read more

If you even 'like' music on a marginal level and you haven't been to Twist and Shout, SHAME ON YOU. (The owners recently closed both stores on Alameda and opened a 12.000 sq.-foot store on Colfax, right next to The Tattered Cover...on Colfax. There's a free parking garage for customers behind T & S!) This is THE place to go for vinyl and cd's. And they get really cool people playing at the store and if they're too popular to play at a record store (trey anastasio), they'll come by and sign merchandise for the fans. Direct Quotes from my DJ Boyfriend who just moved here from Tampa...'These are some of the sickest records I've ever seen and they're used.' 'If my friend, 'so and so' knew how ill this record store was, he'd move here in a second.' The prices are extremely fair and the employees are definitely knowledgeable. You'll find emo, goth, hipster, geeked-out, hip hop, and just...older patrons mixing in music harmony. And the owners even keep the needles on the turntables so DON'T STEAL THEM. This place is massive and I love all the records you could get. I also got lost staring at all the albums and photos on the walls! When I focused back on the vinyls I wandered around to see they also sell other stuff as well. The other thing this place has are concerts. I went to a free concert and it was pretty amazing. For one, there is something to be said to see a band playing while you're sitting in aisle looking at them over the stacks of records. And it's just cool to see a band at a record store. Did I mention the beer, too? ;) It definitely makes me want to come back especially if they have another event going on. It drew in an intimate, eclectic group and I just a great overall vibe. As someone else noted, there's a definite trade-off here. Focusing mainly on the music, there is an overwhelmingly large selection of vinyl and CD's - both new and used - but it comes with high sticker prices. You may well find what you're looking for, but you're gonna pay for it. Also, all too often some new LP covers or shrink-wrapped LP box sets can be a bit banged up or have a crushed corner(s), so check carefully if this matters to you. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful, including Paul the cheery owner. The English guy with glasses, at the used 'rare' record counter, always comes off as standoffish, even unwelcoming. Maybe he's inherently reserved and so just needs to smile and loosen up? It would help! :-) COVID rules are mainly observed by the staff, and there's a current limit of 25 customers in the store so you may have to wait outside. Know that staff and customers will quickly pass right by you in the narrow aisles to get by, rather than choosing longer routes to avoid you. Overall, I warmly recommend you give Twist and Shout a try. With all their music, books, videos and other related "stuff" yes, it's the biggest 'record store' in the state and you can kill some serious, happy time here. read more

A large and varied selection of CDs ad LPs can be found here. The service people have always been helpful. Many weird, and some sicko, trinkets are available. I appreciate the store, especially because of its large jazz selection, the best in town by far. This is rare. There is a small selection of books which sit above the music. I have discovered new books on jazz there. Hip, it is. The downside is much of the music played in store, which is dark and even blasphemous. I think the workers should realize that songs that say, "Jesus died for nothing" (from a Spiritualized recording) are not only false, but deeply offensive of Jesus' followers. I one of them. I don't want to restrict anyone's artistic freedom, but some sensitivity to the patrons would be appreciated. I have come close to leaving the store several times because of the repellent music played there. read more

I have been a customer since I was in high school, and will never purchase anything from Twist and Shout again or mourn when it disappears. At Christmas a purchased an album for my nephew. Turns out he already owned. I called the store and the promised to take the return and refund the purchase, even though that was not normal policy. Great I thought; they live up to their mantra of "service, selection, ambiance". When I arrived at the store, it was a different story, they did not want to refund the purchase they wanted to give a store credit. The pushed the we are a local store, covid has made times hard, please take a credit, don't worry we will keep track of of and won't disappear ever. Well, April rolls around and there is no credit to be found. I feel lied to and stolen from. read more

This is generally a great store with a huge selection, but be careful. They knowingly sell bootleg vinyl pressings without any sort of marking or distinction. I found two albums that I know have never had official pressings (Kanye's Yeezus and The Life of Pablo). When I asked the person at the counter about them, he acknowledged that he knew they were bootleg. They were selling for $40 a piece, and had no sticker or anything marking them as unofficial pressings. I messaged the company privately on FB and did not get a response. Twist and Shout is the kind of store that makes me wish I could write 45 rpm (that's forty-five reviews per month). When it comes to local record shops, it's simply unbeatable. Why has it cultivated such an immaculate collection over the years? Just look at the greatest hits: Track One: "More Than a Feeling" Twist and Shout prides itself on three things: great value, unbeatable selection, and the one thing Amazon can't replicate (yet): ATMOSPHERE. Every spare inch of the store is teeming with that electric buzz of a great record store. It's like the staff had a seance to instill the souls of Jerry, Jimi and Biggie in the walls of the place. That feeling and look (gorgeous concert posters galore!) of an old school record store, combined with the bright, crisp look--and welcomed revamp!--of their new location makes this the mecca of music fans in the Mile High City. Track Two: "Welcome to the Jungle". I've been a frequent shopper at Twist and Shout for the last five years, but my traffic there has been amped up to 11 since they moved to their Colfax location in summer of 2007. Sandwiched in between the equally excellent Tattered Cover Bookstore and the Colfax Arts Center--AND with a friendly neighborhood Chipotle breathing right under their nose--this place has everything a music nerd could want. Books, burritos, and bohemians? Too bad they won't let me put up my tent out on the sidewalk. Track Three: "Just What I Needed". Twist and Shout's record selection is sprawling and immaculately organized to boot. Having recently shuffled their store (they wisely decided to shelve their extensive used catalog with their new cds), the store has an intuitive and customer-friendly design. Sure the aisles are a little thin, but there's nothing like rubbing up against a stranger who might be looking for the same Ronettes collection as you. If you can't find something, the staff is happy to track it down or order it in for you. Track Four: "C.R.E.A.M. (Cash Rules Everything Around Me)". Besides selection, value is one of the main attractions at T&S. Most cds are at or below the MSRP, and $10 or $12 new releases are not uncommon. Their constant influx of quality/rare used cds makes splurging at the store even more affordable. The impressive music collection, accounting for all major musical genres (their industrial and experimental section takes up a dozen racks of cds), is bolstered by a noteworthy vinyl section. Whether you're tracking down the latest Top 40 artist or the most obscure Willie Nelson 7", you're gonna find what you need somewhere here. Track Five: "Odds n Sods" Besides having the best music in Denver, T&S also offers an impressive array of other media, especially DVDs. Their films section, from recent releases to tv collections to obscure foreign and indie finds, is nicely organized along the store's towering walls. The prices aren't necessarily unbeatable, but the selection's solid. The fashion, toys, and stereo equipment are all equally impressive, and never fail to make me feel even more like a kid in a candy store. Bathory t-shirts AND adorable Japanese plush toys? I have arrived. Track Six: "Thank You For the Music" I wasn't kidding when I implied I'd camp out front of Twist and Shout if they'd let me. Although tough times have made me restrict my visits to once a month or less, I still have a blast every time I stop by the store, and almost always walk away with an album (or six) that I can't wait to get home and try out on the stereo. I'm in love with this place. Not only is this an excellent source of music and cool gifts, but seeing as it was conveniently located across the street from my high school, it also served as the coolest place to hang out after school (ok fine--DURING school, too, sometimes...) The store has everything you could ever want in a record store: a friendly and knowledgeable staff, GREAT selection, vinyl, t-shirts, posters, awesome little gifts, books, concert DVDs, in-store performances, reliable used CDs, cool deco, and jesus magnets. Whenever I go I always get caught up in the first part of the store filled with all the knick-knacks. One day I WILL buy that stuffed rabbit with a mustache-- I'd just rather spend my money on tons of used CDs and vinyl. And money well spent! I've never ended up with an overpriced scratched up turd of a CD or vinyl here, and I can always find what I'm looking for. Nor have I ever received a condescending scoff from the staff member checking out my used Spice Girls and Slayer CDs-- if they're music snobs, they hide it well. All around an A+ record store. Alrite Brian Harvey of East 17 here, was on me holidays in Denver Colorado, USA taking a break from unclogging the u bends of Walthamstow, when I happened on this record shop. If you didn't know I've made a few records me self with me voice with East 17 and some stellar solo r n b work too. Anyway enough of Brian I was here to have a mooch about because I do like to collect me records innit. me first impression of this place was that it was big with a large selection of music and I quickly found what I was looking for - Wyclef Jean (who I have collabed with on the single 'Lovin U'). So I was how we say in the east end a happy little chappy with that. Things turned a little sour when I went on a little mission looking for me own records though. some might say its a bit self obsessed to do that but i don't think most people could resist it if they were a lil popstar for a breif moment in time before tony mortimer in his farking mansion sacked me out of the band. wanker but i was singing shit anyway so whatevs. anyway where was i? I couldnt find me any east 17 or B Harvey in this store so I asked this clerk, who looked a bit like me after a few e's, 3 baked potatoes, & a tin of special brew - a bit fooked! So I asked him about East 17 and me solo work, the chap looked at me like I had three bloody heads! He said 'derr who?' I dunno I just didn;t like his tone with me. So i said 'look mate I had 17 top 20 hits in the UK with that outfit and on me own so you should farkin well know them'. That drew even blanker looks so I just said 'look fark it mate, i dont farkin care. you know? you think i care about this shit? i bloody dont. go and listen to grapefruit dead or whatever, wanker'. i left it there, you know? you cant win with plonkers like that. i went on to enjoy the rest of me holiday though. saw some really good pornos and scored some top notch e's. safe as fark mate! read more

This review comes after visiting Twist & Shout on Record Store Day-I will be the first to admit that such an occasion is a very busy day and not the normal day for this store, but at the same time, Record Store Day should be a good gauge for a store. The bottom line is, this place was incredibly disorganized and cramped. While large in size overall, the shelves are incredibly close together. Normally, this would be pretty annoying. On this day? It was a downright nightmare. There were traffic jams just from people waiting to pass through the aisles, as a mere two people in an aisle block traffic. Here's where it gets really annoying, and weird. Apparently these shelves can be wheeled around and re-ogranized. In this particular instance, they were wheeling shelves around to block off an area near a stage for a live in-store performance. Where this becomes a problem is that the records I wanted to look through where in the "blocked off" area, so I couldn't shop for records like normal. That's really frustrating, and not to mention counterintuitive to a day where you are encouraged to go buy records from a local store. I left without buying anything, mostly because I couldn't get to the records I wanted to see. I might give this store another chance, but the initial experience left a really sour taste in my mouth. I'll probably stick with Wax Trax. read more

I love the music selection at Twist & Shout just like everyone else on Yelp. But, I love that Twist & Shout is more that just a music store. Sure they carry new and used CDs and plenty of vinyl to satiate every hipsters thirst. However, they also carry great books about music, random toys, cool clothing and bags that I seriously need to have in my assorted collection. The collection that I mostly just look at since I can only carry one bag at a time. A small fact of life I'm trying to get around somehow. The only reminder of my friend's cheating ex was a scratch on one of his favorite vinyl records: Rick Astley's "Whenever You Need Somebody." "Never Gonna Give You Up" plays fine, but "Together Forever" is marred by his ex's careless handling. Late-night jam sessions had an echo of sadness whenever Astley's glorious croon was Rick-rolled by skipping and scratching. So I knew the perfect holiday gift for my friend would be a replacement record, so he could be forever rid of regrets from his past relationship. The only problem is that the Astley masterpiece is hard to find on vinyl, especially if you want to purchase it from one Denver's excellent record stores. Wax Trax and Independent Records both came up with nothing, but Twist and Shout had exactly what I was looking for. Well not exactly. They didn't have the full album of "Whenever You Need Somebody." But they did have the next best thing: The single version of "Together Forever" with four remixes and other b-sides. All this for only $4. Now my friend can listen to Rick's swaggering baritone whenever he wants without the scratches that remind him of bad times. Thank you Twist and Shout for making this happen! read more

Time to be the downer again: Twist and Shout is what you think it would be: image driven cd and record store that appeals to the indie-rock sort of culture. They have lots of random sorts of gifts and shirts and goods that fit the image they are pushing, which is to be expected. They are independently owned, which is a plus. I can understand the appeal personally, but when I went in there, they were playing some nasty post-rock, and when I went to look for cds, I was reminded why I stopped buying hard-copy cds in the first place: 18 dollars for a cd that has been out over 10 years? If you are into paying a hell of a lot for music and are into the scene, this is your place. Personally I will stick to getting cds online for $10. read more

Oh my god these guys make me actually want to twist and shout. Like, they actually have a quite decent selection of vinyl here. Like pretty much an entire room full of vinyl. Yes I am in hipster heaven here with all my records. I just wanna lie down on top of all their records and relax because this store really does make me feel like I'm in heaven. Most other stores in Denver have such a terrible selection of vinyl. Like, maybe an aisle or a rack here and there. But at Twist and Shout, they have such a great selection and everything is labeled very clearly. So easy to navigate. Prices are a bit high for vinyl, but I just think that's a product of the times. Too many youngsters like me buying up all these records. But Twist and Shout is definitely my new go-to for any record hunting here in Denver. read more

I hate to be the 'I was into them back when...' guy, but whatevs. T&S, in my opinion, was much better when it was down on Alameda. Having a separate vinyl shop was fantastic. Since that's what I shop primarily for, I was disappointed then when the vinyl section took up the back corner of the new space - and maybe I'm imagining it, but appears to be shrinking. They do get great new used stuff in all the time - vinyl included - and the staff have always been super helpful. They also keep their selection of 7"s well stocked. For the non-vinyl lover, they do have loads of CDs and DVDs, many used, and always at reasonable prices. read more

The BF has recently acquired a record player, so we've found our way to T&S nearly every weekend since. And admittedly, it feels great to get back into a music store and comb through the aisles of cds and vinyl. You can spend hours here, sifting through the new and used products. I love Twist & Shout so much I cried when they closed down their Alameda Store and opened up on Colfax. Now I have to drive even farther to get to the goodness! Despite the location change, I still come here often. I'm always on the perusal for replacement obscure CDs that some shady crackhead stole out of my car a few years ago. You can get a good deal here on used CDs. If you're into vinyl records, this is a good place to check out. I mainly love their selection of kawaii character goods, blind box items, and random, funky kitsch. Let's just say that there aren't very many stores in Denver that offer such high class necessities like the Electric Yodelling Pickle! Parking sucks balls. You'll be driving around in circles for awhile if you come during peak times. read more

Popped in here for the first time the other day and was utterly mesmerized by the vinyl. I've been an avid vinyl shopper and all over the country, ie Let it Be Records out of Minneapolis, Dancerecords.com out of San Fransisco, have all fallen prey to the brutal economy. Twist & Shout is alive and kicking, it's almost a relic, World Heritage should create a new category for record stores and ordain this place as a heritage site! read more

Twist 'n' Shout may have moved from their previous kick ass location but, that doesn't mean the place isn't still a destination. It just means you may have to drive a little farther and parking may take a little more effort--that's all. Twist 'n' Shout rocks--figuratively and literally. Selling every type of music you could imagine, Twist 'n' Shout is the #1 independent music destination in Denver. ....Ok ok, I understand, I'm just one girl and, i know, why should you believe me?!?! Um, because, duh! No, seriously, here's an example of the "T'n'W" rocks so much: The acoustic music performances. From THE FRAY to PAOLO NUTINI to JOHN POPPER to DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, they've all performed at Twist 'n' Shout! It's an acoustic set usually with no more than 100 people and a meet 'n' greet afterwards. Get there early, though. This way, you'll get a great seat and can shop in the meantime! read more

I called multiple times, stating, "Let's start over..." to speak about the problem, and he continues to hang up. The records are overpriced, but we still frequent their store. NEVER AGAIN. Twist and Shout is a huuuge music store. Chances of finding that obscure release are better here than many of the few surviving record stores in the city. That's the upside. The downsides though, outnumber the ups in my experiences here. Sure, you've got your stereotypical employees with the uninterested hipster glare, in uniform of course (skinny pipe-leg jeans, obscure band shirt, bedhead, piercings, etc.), half of which are semi-approachable and might even speak to you if you have breasts! That isn't part of the negative experience, as I've come to expect that from every indy record store unfortunately. Parking is also difficult, but that's everywhere in the city, so I can't fault them for that really. The problems with this store revolve around two things: high prices and.... Bootlegs! Seriously?! This place sells freaking bootlegs in the year 2013! Want to buy a Kings of Leon concert video from last month's iTunes concert series on DVD-R with an inkjet printed insert cover for $17 bucks? Then this is the place. How about a used bootleg double vinyl of a live Radiohead show? It can be yours if you've got $40 burning a hole in your pocket. While I don't the sale condone bootlegs, anybody with an internet connection can get that stuff for free (as it should be), but should a record store be allowed to make money from them? Seems pretty dirty that an established place as successful and large as Twist & Shout would resort to ripping off artists and fans alike by selling bootleg videos, cds and vinyl at prices that are high even by today's standards! The new vinyl is just as overpriced as it is in other stores and the internet, though to be fair, a few releases I saw were probably a dollar or two less than some of the competitors in town. Where it got really frustrating was the used vinyl pricing. All but the most obscure/abused vinyl was priced at 7 bucks and up...way up. There was a Decemberists vinyl release in the "newly arrived" used bin priced at $16.99, and the new version was in the store for $18.99! Wow, what a great deal...not so much. Some of the new and used vinyl stock was jammed so tightly in the bins that you couldn't even look through it without removing a stack temporarily. Overall, it was a pretty disappointing experience. I'm a guy who will spend hours pouring through a record store if there is even a slight chance of finding some gold or if the prices are reasonable. This isn't a place you can go and maybe find that hidden gem you've been looking for, and it's not the place you'll score a valuable record at a low price. The buyers are obviously very musically educated, and will price every drop of vinyl at or above market value, which kind of sucks most of the fun out of the experience. While cd prices are pretty competitive, who really buys cds any more? Recommend skipping this place and sticking with eBay and yard sales for the Denver vinyl collector. read more
