The menu had so many options, I didn't know what to try. Ended up getting a burger topped with bacon, which I added egg to. This is a Texas chain with about 15 locations. (Disclaimer: yes, there is one in Louisiana,) and it is a little funky. Here is a quick breakdown: The staff seems to have a fun friendly attitude. The decor is eclectic and casual. Logistically it is an order at the counter and go pick up your food when it is ready. Menu wise...They have a bunch of signature pre-designed burger choices. They also have a build your own option. All burgers are cooked medium well unless you request otherwise. (Oh and salads,.... I guess If you are into that kind of thing) Plus an array of fried side dishes. My experience. I kept it simple and honestly a little boring. I went with the BYO Burger option with a beef burger and a pretzel bun and bacon. Super simple. My pretzel bun was a little flakey and fell apart a little. Root beer float - they make their own root beer and our it over their own vanilla custard. I also got to try the fries which were good as well. I would come back here again if I am in the area. When I come back i have already started to compile the list of the other items I need to try which include: fried pickles, Build Your own cheddar fries, perhaps try one of the game meats, fruit loop adult shake.... This place is good and all of Deep Ellen knows about it. Came in on a Saturday night before seeing a concert at The Bomb Factory. It is a counter service burger joint that boasts having locally raised beef. The burgers are thick juicy and full of flavor. On this occasion I was eating healthy. I had the chopped mexican salad. It had romaine w/ corn, black beans, jalapeños, red bell peppers, avocado and tomato. It was served with cumin lime vinaigrette and queso fresco. I added a turkey patty to it for some protein. The salad was perfect! One thing that is different about this location verses the one we frequent in Fairview is that they have a bar. In Fairview they have beer, but not a full service bar. read more

This location was the worst Twisted Root we've been to when it came to service. Parking was horrible (make sure you have your license tag written down because you will have to know it to get a parking space receipt.) The people waiting in line had gone outside, I suggested maybe they should go inside and just wrap around inside the restaurant. Which they did. It was about 4:00 PM and it was so crowded the air conditioner couldn't keep up... For some reason the bar wasn't open, but you could order drinks, they forgot to give them to us. I had to make several trips to the counter to get everything correct... The food was excellent! Make sure you order medium rare if you don't want it medium well. Our favorite twisted root is in San Angelo. Our second favorite is in Richardson off of 75 (make sure you tell them if you want it medium rare). I actually have video of the poor service at this location, but I don't know if I will post it. This location just didn't have things on the ball service wise or air conditioning wise but the food was very good... The location is just too small for the crowds and the manager doesn't appear to be responsive to obvious service issues on this visit. read more

A great place to grab a bite while hanging out in Deep Ellum! The burgers are big and made fresh to order. We got the Freshman 15 and Lots a Shroom and the meat was juicy and charcoal kick to it, which I like. The bun is average and the cheese fries got cold and soggy fast. Twisted Root is my son's favorite burger restaurant for quality of food. It is a counter order type restaurant versus a sit down, but the burgers were excellent! The patties tasted freshly ground and were nice and thickly firmed. The cheese, onions, and other components of the burgers were high quality as well, and I believe it is served on an egg bun, which I enjoyed as well. They have an amusing / gimmicky name system to help you claim your order for pickup, and there is a bar with plenty of tv feeds (but you need an app to hear sound). I like the selection of flavored pickles they have at a condiment bar type setup, and each table has a selection of custom made house sauces. I will definitely be coming back, and hope they have other locations we can visit. read more

This place is pretty good! While my burger wasn't the best I've ever had it was good! They also have a bunch of exotic meats to choose from. I wanted to try them all! The milkshakes sounded absolutely amazing but unfortunately I was too full to have one. The french fries are perfectly crispy and there are 3 sauces at the tables to use for dipping: chipotle ketchup, spicy mustard and secret BBQ. I honestly am not a fan of BBQ sauce but theirs was to die for!! Definitely a neat place to try out- the atmosphere is cool with good music and funny names they call when your order is ready. Sorry to say it, but this was the worst burger I've had in 3 years of living in Dallas. I ordered a Le Waygu, which is supposed to come medium well. My burger came overcooked (very well done), and dry. And the fried egg that I ordered on top was super fried, too much, like an over hard egg. This was not the only concern; my brother in law ordered a burger and cheese fries. His cheese fries came out stone cold, and his burger was missing onions and dressing (that comes with it). They actually sent it out like this, and didn't bother to tell him. He had to go up to the counter, and ask. That is not good service. To top it off, it took 23 minutes for me to get my food; and another added 14 for everyone else to get theirs. Nearly 40 minutes of waiting, for amazingly mediocre food. I wanted to like Twisted Root more than I did. As you walk in, the vibe is hip. It feels like a cool clubhouse. (Check out the bathrooms for fun "graffiti.") When you place your order, you're given a card with the name of a pop culture character. In a few minutes, an employee will walk to the microphone and announce your name - Happy Gilmore, Ponyboy, Marty McFly, etc. That's cool. But ultimately, the burger I ordered had some serioius drawbacks. First, I ordered a pretzel bun. My bun didn't really taste like pretzel at all. It's possible I got the wrong bun. Also, the bun wasn't up to the task of supporting the burger. It kept breaking apart in my hands, which makes for a messy meal. I like that I could build my own burger. I went with pepperjack cheese, bacon and buffalo sauce. A good combo. But I've had far better burgers elsewhere. This low key establishment makes one heck of a burger. The setup is brilliant - you pick a protein and then select from a list of toppings. That's is. Add a side or a milkshake and you're done. No long list of options. The proteins offered are unique. Regular offerings like beef, turkey and chicken are offered alongside buffalo, camel, etc. I went with basic beef patty covered with Swiss and garlic mushrooms. One of the better burgers I have had in a long time. The jars of self-serve pickles were also solid. Oh! I love great burger joint. This definitely is a place to go. The have they regular burgers at a very cheap price, of the make your own depending on what you want as toppings and sides. As a DDD fan, on my vacation to Dallas, this was the first stop after checking into the hotel. As I walked inside, I liked the old car artifacts, it gave the spot a very local /neighborhood type feel. The staff was very helpful as they took the time to explain the menu to us. They came across as knowledgeable and friendly; what's not to like about that? I pretty much knew what I was getting though: their specialty 1/2 pound burger with pepper jack cheese, green chiles, and guacamole. My own personal touch was to add some bacon. the meat was very juicy, I guess the breadcrumbs do help. The kick of the chiles and sweetness of the guac complemented each other beautifully. The pepper jack added a bit of heat, but the crunch and saltiness of the bacon really added that extra dimension that made this burger one of the most enjoyable I've eaten in a while. The flavors just meshed so well. I am a pickle addict so their pickle bar was a nice touch with four varieties: dill, spicy, bread n butter, and atomic. I passed on the latter two. The dill were fine, but I like the hint of cayenne in the spicy pickles. For the sides, I went with onion strings. What I liked about these strings as opposed to many other onion strings I have had is these weren't too thin and full of grease. I could really bite into them. The breading was light and crispy and they were even better when mixed with Quincy's grandpa's BBQ sauce. I was really impressed with that sauce. It has a bold tanginess with a nice balance between sweet and heat. I was not too thrilled with sweet potato chips, they were a bit overdone. Except I was able to dip them in their house-made ancho-chipotle ketchup. Now, I never eat ketchup. Never. I think the main reason is that it's usually too sweet and tastes like straight tomato. Well, this was not the case at all. The blend of chili powders really livened my taste buds up. I wished TRB would ship this chipotle ketchup across the country because i would willingly purchase a case. Amazing. I drank the cranberry-flavored root beer, and I'm glad the cranberry wasn't too overpowering. It gave just a hint of fruitiness to a darn good glass of RB. Free refills was a definite plus. All in all, I would definitely return here the next time I visit the Metroplex. read more

Twisted Root is FUN! Great for families and kids to enjoy. You order at register and that's when they give you a character that they will call you by in order for you to pick up your food from the counter. After you get your character you go find your seat and my favorite part is the pickle station. There are several different kinds of pickles and you can try all or just fill up on your favorite and there's not limit so you can get as much as you'd like. I personally suggest everyone spending the extra money to upgrade to a wagyu patty because it is cooked to perfection and juicy and just an all around better quality beef. This go around I ordered the Freedom Melt because I don't see that at every location so I was excited to try something new. It's served on Texas toast with fried onion straws, chopped brisket and bbq sauce. It was really good and very meaty, I did have to add extra bbq sauce but there's a bottle on every table so no you do not have to pay extra for that. My Nutella shake was good but it was too much syrup sitting at the bottom making it hard to drink and I eventually gave up at the end because it was just too much and too sweet. I'll have to stick to the classic shakes next time. And lastly the fries were not my favorite at all. I typically get the fried veggie sticks so now I know to stick to that because the fries seemed to lack seasoning and mine were room temperature. But again I've eaten at several different locations and it's always a good burger and I will continue to come here. read more

The place itself has a super chill, laid-back vibe. Some table tops are made of beer bottle caps, others are made out of a dappled copper, quirky sayings and phrases everywhere you look. The walls are decorated with Velvet portraits and the bathroom is littered with Chuck Norris jokes. Good music is always playing, waiters and staff are friendly, upbeat as well as helpful. Don't come here if you don't want to laugh! I got a Lots-A-Shrooms burger because I was craving those baby Bellas with Swiss! Be aware while ordering, fries do not come included with your burger. We grabbed some Bread and Butter pickles from the counter (our fave out of all the choices, though Ranch isn't too shabby either), got two Shiners and we proceeded to grab a table and wait for our order. Instead of you giving your name so they can call it out when your order is ready, they give you a name. Well, not just a random name. Normally that of a celebrity or icon, we got Aziz Ansari (whom I LOVE on Parks and Rec. he cracks me tf up!) They always call out the name with an accent or some funny little quote or punchline. Just adds to the fun! Burgers were up pretty quick. The Lots-A-Shrooms was scrumptious! My only complaint was that the bottom bun was soggy and fell apart pretty much immediately, but the meat was cooked Medium-Rare, like I asked for, the sauteed baby Bellas were exceptional and that melt Swiss on top added a fantastic richness as only cheese can do. I tried the recommended Western Burger, Fries, and Fried Pickles all which came out in a decently timely manner, hot & fresh, and certainly did not disappoint my tastebuds. Oh, and let's not forget the top notch margarita Mike, the Manager made with freshly squeezed limes. While the food was great and the menu is verse, the cleanliness of the establishment was even better. It's not too often you hear a manager telling their employees to "wipe down the walls" or practice "FIFO" when change out the condiments on the table. They also have some interesting sauces on the table, like their own horseradish or BBQ sauce. Their milkshakes are basically plain ice cream with a few additional toppings. I ordered the funnel cake shake and was sorely disappointed. It was super thick. To the point where drinking it with a fat straw was unbearable. The funnel cake bits they threw in were stale and chewy. The chocolate syrup they added tasted like cheap stuff. It tasted more like a plain vanilla ice cream with a sprinkling of toppings. A Dallas local I was staying with took me here for lunch, and I was NOT disappointed.
