I try now to limit my 5 star ratings because if everything is 5 stars then it doesn't matter what a review says. And, there are way too many 5 star ratings. The Twisted Shrimp earned the 5 stars. You order at the counter and they bring the grub to your table. You won't be difficult to find because the place seats about 20. It's small so don't bring a huge group in. We ordered a pound of fried shrimp with a side of fried okra and the shrimp tacos. This okra was perfect. I mean I don't know if it was fresh but it sure as heck tasted fresh. Then there was the shrimp. Fried shrimp are often over battered and are often a lot of breading with a little shrimp. Not here! Very lightly battered and fried to perfection. Perfection means the shrimp are cooked for the appropriate amount of time so they are not chewy. You have dipping sauces but I just went with tarter sauce which was delicious. Finally, the shrimp tacos are three street style tacos with a mango salsa. You can have the shrimp prepared fried blackened or jerk. They were awesome. 5 stars is simply not high enough for this place. The food, the service, the vibes.. everything about this place is 10/10. I have a sesame allergy and Simon (our waiter) checked the labels of the sauces we were served to make sure none had sesame and that kind of care is not something that occurs often. read more

I'm not really understanding why there are such great reviews of this place, our experience was not a good one, and the food was subpar at best. One star for service and one for the chicken I guess??? Here's what happened. We showed up with a party of 6, sat down and ordered the conch fritters and some waters. While waiting for our appetizer, we asked what fish is used in the fish and chips and were told it's mahi, however they are out of mahi (which is basically the only other thing they have besides shrimp and chicken) and oh, by the way, they also don't have wraps because they're out of tortillas as well. I feel like we should've been told this right off the bat because it takes a significant portion of the menu out of commission, and at that point all of us had decided on what meals we wanted, so it was pretty disappointing. They do not have a liquor license, they only have soft drinks and water. Two in our party left to go elsewhere, my family and I regretfully stuck it out. My husband got a jerk chicken sandwich, he said it was "ok" and that the chicken seemed of good quality. The fries were not crispy at all. My son's chicken fingers came out hot and were cooked well. My daughter got the rice bowl and there were dry, hard pieces of rice in it which I can only assume is because they batch cook the rice and it was from the day before or something. I got shrimp and grits and had to send it back because there were hard, chewy pieces of rice in that as well. Side note, they also served the grits on top of a lettuce leaf which was buried underneath (?!?) so weird. The flavor of the grits was almost sweet, not pleasant to me. Our waitress was accommodating and did remove that from the bill. The outside seating area has a cute ramshackle patio kind of feel which would have been much cuter if the food was actually good. This gem of a restaurant is tiny in size without a lot of ambiance, but it makes up for it in their delicious food. The shrimp and grits was enjoyed by my finicky husband and I had the blackened shrimp tacos which were done perfectly. The blackening wasn't too spicy and the cabbage and fresh mango were great accompaniments. I chose the roasted Brussels sprouts with balsamic glaze as my side and it was very tasty too. My wife and I stopped here on our weekend vacation to Islamorada... We came because the gluten free options were almost too good to be true. It's incredibly rare for my wife who has celiac disease to find fried Mahi Mahi and other fish to be gluten free at restaurants. We will be coming back each visit. read more

Amazing experience TWICE! I am not sure what to rave about more the food or the customer service! Our server Natalie was customer service perfection. She is so courteous and made our experience delightful with her cheerful personality. Her hospitality coupled with the great seafood cooked to order made this a delightfully rare experience. It is bit often you get great service and food at the same place but Twisted Shrimp mastered it so well that I not only visited once but went back for more during my stay in Islamorada! The cracked conch was so tender and flavorful, shrimp and grits delicious. The shrimp was actual shrimp, not some breaded frozen out the box mess dropped in grease, like other places!.The fried okra was delicious, and the crab cake had actual crab meat in it! Everything I ordered was freshly cooked, flavorful, and delicious. If you are ever in the area this is a definite MUST GO TO restaurant! Can't wait to go again. read more

I stopped in for lunch after visiting "The Lobster Shack" down the street at which I couldn't tell if they were actually serving their "World Famous Lobster Roll." It looked more like a coffee stand with a bunch of gift shops. I gave up there after I wasn't greeted standing at the coffee window for several minutes. Their loss. My gain. That brought me to Twisted Shrimp. So glad I came. The staff was super friendly and the food was awesome. I had the Shrimp Po' Boy wrap with sweet potato fries. It was excellent! So much flavor from the wrap and fries. I'm on The Island for 11 more days. Definitely will hit this place again to try a different dish. I doubt it will disappoint. read more

Wow this restaurant was an amazing find! We were a bit apprehensive since it is situated on busy route 1. But the service and quality of the food made up for the road noise. We loved the place so much that we went back a second time. The mahi-mahi tacos, shrimp and grits ( with a touch of cumin) and grilled mahi-mahi and shrimp with rice were absolutely delicious. Couldn't beat happy hour prices! Carlos the co-owner was very personable, and sincerely wanted to make sure everything was ok. The restaurant has only been open for a year. Inside is graffiti-covered walls, which gives a definite informal but fun ambiance. Wooden table and chairs, which is a step above. Daily specials on a chalkboard, otherwise a paper menu. Quick service, sort-of able to answer questions about what their spices are ("what is 'jerk'?"--I'm from the midwest, give me a break), but nice about it. Quick with food prep. Potato-fries were perfect (as opposed to sweet potato, which I didn't try). I had a jerk shrimp taco and another kind of shrimp taco in a flour tortilla. Delicious and filling. Not too much spice. Lots of crunch from fresh lettuce. Could have used a touch more relish/pickled whatever to contrast with the shrimp. Shrimp was divine. Price was probably the cheapest I ran into. And the restroom was clean. It definitely makes the top 5 of places in the Keys I'd stop again. read more

We wanted to try Twisted Shrimp last Thanksgiving but they were closed that week. We were happy to see it open this trip and we visited it our very first night. Though we weren't sure what type of restaurant it was going into the place, it was one of the better meals we've eaten at in the Islamorada. You order at the counter off a paper menu and take a seat either inside or on their outdoor patio. It is a small quaint place with only about 6 tables inside and another 6 or so outside. The food was delicious and came out relatively fast & hot. The only thing I would have liked better was if they toasted the po-boy roll prior placing the shrimps on it. One of my new favorite spots in islamorada. If you've never been, don't give it a second thought. Definitely try the tuna nachos and shrimp and bacon quesadilla with their mango salsa. Their rice and beans are also amazing! You won't regret it. It's definitely a hole in the wall and i wish more people knew about it. They also have a super cute boat with a table in it outside you can sit in and would make for a great photo op! Our server was very attentive and happy to help with any request.
