My company at a big party and they hired 3 food trucks to cater the event . They all looked good , but Two For The Road's captain crunch crusted crab cakes really grabbed my attention. Let me tell you I'm sooooo happy I went with them , because these are the best crab cakes I've ever eaten . The fresh tasting lobster, the purity of its flavor and the perfectly buttery roll... yuuuummm I first tried Two for the Road at the Tuesday Food Truck gathering on Adams Ave. I couldn't stop thinking about that lobster roll for days. The Friday AA Beer Club meet at 57 Degrees ( every 3rd Friday of each month they have food trucks in the back parking lot). As soon as I saw the white and blue checkered truck I went straight there!! I tried the shrimp BLT, look at my picture as it speaks for itself!! Deliciously fresh until the last bite. Food so good I would serve it at my wedding... and we did! They had us at Cap'n Crunch Crab Cakes and we were swooning after the Lobster Roll. So yummy it's hard for me to try their other menu options because I don't want to miss out on those two. As far as the wedding -- everything went great. I've tried these guys twice now and although I've had better food elsewhere I enjoy supporting my local food truck. My first meal I had was the monte cristo and it was super good. Rather small but these gave me an excuse for me to try their lobster roll. That I was not a big fan of, plain and simple it wasn't to my liking. The second meal was their Dr. Pepper burger and fries. I liked the fries as they were dusted in parmesan cheese but the burger wasn't exciting and the meat lacked overall flavor. I expected a sweet caramelized patty but got a bland burger instead. If I had to sum up Two for the Road in one word, I'd use "Meh." My coworkers and I ate there a few minutes ago. We ordered three Brooklyn Burgers, some fries and the Cap'n Crunch crab cakes. The idea for the burger sounds awesome. From bottom to top: Bun, spicy slaw, burger, pastrami, melty swiss cheese, bun. The idea is fantastic. The execution, however, left something to be desired. The bottom bun was fine. The spicy slaw was not spicy. The burger was shaped almost like a golf ball and very overcooked. The pastrami was low quality. The swiss cheese was good. The top bun was at least a full inch thick. Way too much bread. The fries with the Parmesan cheese were quite nice. The Cap'n Cruch crab cakes got mixed reviews. I thought they were low quality and funky tasting. Sweetness with crab? No thanks. I do have to say that one of my coworkers loved them. All in all, I'd have to say that they have some good ideas, but the quality of the ingredients is low. I don't think I'll be rushing back to Two for the Road. read more

Since I grew up in New England, I rarely get Maine lobster on the west coast due to obvious reasons. That being said, I tried this food truck out at Balboa Park's Food Truck Friday. The line was on the longer end, but usually that means it's worth the wait. I got the lobster grilled cheese with a small side of fries. I was tempted to get a Maine woopie pie but they looked a bit smooshed. The bisected grilled cheese showed a decent amount of lobster and the buttered bread and cheese were comfort food done well. Tried this food truck last Tuesday in South Park and ordered their lobster roll. This was the most popular thing on the menu and I've never had a lobster roll before so it seemed to be the best bet. $14 seemed a little steep at first but once I got home and took one bite, I was hooked! We chose TFTR because of their great reviews, professionalism, and delectable looking menu's that were a perfect fit for our event. The menu we were able to customize with Lisa was simple, yet all that our guests needed for a block party to celebrate our company's anniversary party. We had a bit over 50 guests attend and Lisa and her team provided exceptional food throughout the night. The cheeseburger was unbelievable and made so quickly. Their lobster roll is the best! There's real lobster chunks inside a grilled bun that's just heavenly. I only wish they would stop raising the price haha. It went from $14 to $16 in just 2 weeks! I am disappoint. I was excited to see a "Seattle salmon sandwich" on the menu for $8 so that's what I ordered. Fresh piece of Pacific Northwest salmon on a bun! Awesome right? Wrong! The salmon patty was a Costco salmon patty (yes, I know my salmon burgers) which is ground and formed salmon bits. I guess the "Seattle" part in the title was probably due to the fact that the patties are made by Kirkland Signature, Costco's house brand based out of Kirkland, a Seattle suburb. Annoying little white lie deception right off the bat. So what did my $8 get me? The aforementioned ground salmon patty, a mass-produced and wholly unremarkable multigrain bun that was too bready and dominated the smaller patty by comparison, a runny and nondescript tartar sauce, and some lettuce, tomato, and onion. I'd guess no more than 70-80 cents of food cost sold for a whopping $8, cooked on a greasy flat top grill. Oh, and would you like fries with that? That's gonna cost you $3 more. For that price, I would have liked to have seen a real piece of fish, a freshly toasted craft bakery bun, some decent veggies, and maybe some halfway creative sauce with a little more umph. Something that's worth $8 served from a food truck. I've noticed this trend spreading with the San Diego food trucks lately, using shittier ingredients and charging the customer MORE. On a recent trip to Portland, I didn't see this issue, so why is it happening here in San Diego? The whole idea behind food trucks gaining national prominence in recent years was because you had real chefs giving the finger to tradition and coming up with amazing dishes using gourmet artisanal ingredients at a fraction of the price of a sit down restaurant. I have had my share of disappointing lobster rolls. Many of which were in the Southern California region. I have to say that this food truck, it does not disappoint in the slightest. In fact, let's put it this way. In the limited time that I was in the area I had this truck twice in a matter of a few days instead of trying a few other trucks. It may be $12, but unlike other food truck lobster rolls that I have had, this one really highlights the lobster without the need to putting a lot of filler items and slattering it with mayo. The butter roll that it comes with is also top notch. It really compliments the sandwich stuffing perfectly and gives it a good texture when you're biting into those rather large chunks of lobster. Then you have the cap n crunch crab cakes. I don't know how these came to be, but I'm questioning my atheism after biting into one, as this must be proof that a higher power exist and that he/she does indeed love us. For if they didn't, how could you have something so good? The service on the truck is pretty efficient and friendly. Which really does come across when you see the truck in all its wholesome 1950's sort of look and feel. They crank out the food pretty fast and they also have Leninade. Which is something the communist in me just loves. If I see this truck again I will have to try really hard to NOT want to go to it and order a lot of food from. Two for the Road is one of the better food trucks that I've encountered in La Jolla and one that I hope to visit again. There were four of us together. My companion Bruce J. pointed out that the texture of the lobster meat was "wrong" -- the lobster had been frozen. He knows because he cooked five lobsters for a large family dinner a couple of weeks ago. I've certainly had fresh lobster, and I'm forced to agree with him. Two for the Road reminds me of those old black and white films with the white picket fence and a happy ending. Why? Because: 1. The service was straight up friendly 2. They continuously spin oldies but goodies (and trust, it had my sister and I doing the booty bump. Talk about shared interests between two generations) 3. I left with a happy ending, which came in the form of a crisp, buttered roll stuffed with HUGE chunks of lobster. I mean... that sucker was dripping goodness down my arms! I haven't written a review in almost 4 years-- decided that Two for the Road was worth the review! They were at an event where I tried the lobster roll. I thought it tasted fresh and tasty with the perfect buttered bun. My friend from the east coast said after SEVEN years of bad lobster rolls in SD, she thinks she's finally found the one! Definitely worth the try! My other friends tried the captain crunch crab cakes- said it was the BEST dish they've tried out of any SD food truck (and we eat from a lot of food trucks!), so that's saying a lot. A superb mix between sweet and savory, crispy and flavorful. I mean, who doesn't love fried crab cakes AND captain crunch?! Lastly, heard the Brooklyn burger was also amazing. A juicy delicious patty, topped with pastrami and finished with a spicy cole slaw. They devoured it. Not to mention, they have a friendly staff and I got my food within minutes. I know this truck is just starting out (3 months?), but they will shortly be one of the most successful and popular trucks to be in SD. What a cute truck they have! I should have asked before I ordered what was in the roll, but I kinda just assumed it was going to be like the rolls from The Lobsta Truck in LA. I've eaten here several times, they park near work once a week. I had the curry cashew chicken salad twice- it was awesome both times. Tons of great ingredients- chunks of chicken, celery, grapes, cashews, green onions (I think) and light on the dressing. A lot of salad for about 6.50. At a food truck festival I had the Monte Cristo. It was good if you like a ton of breading. Kind of light on the ingredients. I'm used to the Monte Cristo at Bennigan's, which is packed with cheese, ham, and turkey. This one was just meh. Today I had the Cap'n Crunch crab cakes for lunch. What a ripoff. 8 bucks for two barely edible crab cakes. They use imitation crab! There is a lot of breading which looks like panko. I couldn't tell that they were encrusted in the cereal. Decided to go for a 'healthier' slant to my food truck dining this evening, and choose the salmon burger... and the for good measure tacked on an order Cap'n Crunch crusted crab cakes. When ordering crab cakes, I expect them to be two things: 1) pricey, 2) not very big. I'm happy to report that at least #2 on my expectations was wrong (though the price wasn't bad given the portion size). My impression of the meal before digging in was that this was put together by someone that takes pride in their work. They took the time to make sure our box was properly put together and food was well presented. I was definitely not disappointed by the taste, either. My salmon burger was light and refreshing, with a plump whole wheat roll, two very nice red tomato slices, and a few (raw) red onion rings with a fresh looking leaf of lettuce (probably romaine). It was sitting on a slather of tzatziki sauce. The whole thing was very good and I didn't miss having not gotten a much unhealthier option from one of the other delicious food trucks available. The crab cakes were equally good, with the sweet crust and creamy crab insides complimented well by the zesty sauce and hint of citrus.
