Came to this auto body shop based off of the stellar reviews from Yelp, and I have to say that I am impressed. Although I don't know how to verify that they did a great job since I'm no car mechanic, I trust that they did well. (Let's just hope everybody is good in this world!) They commented that all the previous check ups on the car have been great but they did not know that previously, I always took it to the Toyota shop to get the checkups. I did my 35,000 mile check up on my Toyota RAV4. One other thing to note is that my tire pressures were off and they corrected that along with the checkup (I think that's pretty standard though). They also offered to get my inspection for the car done but since I was physically waiting at the establishment, I said I would take it myself. I can't say anything about work with them, but I can comment on their attitude and demeanor, which I think can hint at how a business is run. When I called them, I get the sense that they seem really dodgy. I asked for an estimate for a CV joint or axle replacement repair, and they would not even give me an "upper range" for a repair like that. I'm giving 2 stars because my car is running fine and Richard was very nice. That said, I paid much more for an oil change than I would have at the dealership--I now pay half the price on an oil change that I paid with Tysons. I definitely should have checked with the dealership's service center first. The majority of my poor rating, however, is due to the horrible cigarette odor my car was returned with. I was stunned when I got into my car after the service was performed. Never have I had a car repair company return my car smelling like an ashtray. Even now--it's been months and the odor still exists in my car...and I am allergic to tobacco so it creates breathing issues for me every time I am in my car. I will never return to this place. Who smokes in a customer's car?! I hate having to recommend away from small businesses, but this time, I recommend going elsewhere. read more

I was very happy with the service I received at Tysons Auto Specialties. I had previously gotten an oil change at Mieneke, and at the end, I was told that I would need new brake roters for $500. This seemed odd to me since my car had been running fine, and only had 45k miles on it. I took it to Tysons Auto Specialties for a second look, and they confirmed that my car was just fine, and didn't need any repairs, and didn't charge me anything. They could have easily lied, and charged me $500, and I would have never known the difference. But these guys value honesty and good service, and for that, I will continue taking my car here. read more

I have taken both of my vehicles (VW Jetta, and Toyota Sienna) here and both times I have been very satisfied. They are a small independent shop so it's a bit different than say going to a large dealer. (i.e. Don't expect someone to be by the phone 24/7). I have been impressed with the quality of service, honesty, and reasonable rates. The only downside is their shop is in a bit of an awkward location tucked way way in the back of the plaza. But it's worth going the extra 50 yards for a good mechanic. read more

Let me start by saying this place is amazing! I went in, on a random Wednesday during my lunch break, to have my car checked out. It had been making a rattling sound and I had noticed it was not accelerating properly. Tom greeted me, listened to my concerns, and gave me a run down on what he through the it might be and included an initial quote. He could see how hesitant I was with the quote and he reassured me he would not do anything to the car with out communicating with me first. He even offered to knock down the price if he found too many issues to help lessen the blow to my pockets. (In the end the price was reasonable and I received quality service.) Tom followed up with me by the end of the day and told me what was going on with my car. He said he would keep it over night until I make a decision on whether or not to go ahead with the repairs. I felt super comfortable with Tom's service, I could have just said yes and go ahead but I consulted with my dad first and Tom and his team got the job done. I feel like my car runs better than before and I am extremely satisfied with the services provided. A few weeks later, I got a letter in the mail from the company with coupons and follow-up information. I would highly recommend this to anyone with car trouble! read more

I brought my BMW 328xi here because I had some problems with my car and I read all the great reviews online. I inquired with them via yelp and they got back to me within two hours. They are located very close to where I work so it was convenient for me. I dropped my car off and they kindly gave me a ride to work. They called a couple hours later to let me know that they could not find what was wrong with my car. They suggested I get my car back and bring it in again the following Monday so they could try again. Even though they could not fix my car, I am giving this place 5 stars. I have been coming to Tyson's auto specialities since moving to the DMV. After having lived in multiple states I can safely say that the folks here are peerless in their honesty, customer care, and quality of work. The folks here have done multiple jobs on my cars - permanently fixing the issues and always charging me a fair rate each time. On most recent annual safety inspection, they were able to diagnose the exact issue I was experiencing as I pulled the car in and provided me the solution on the spot. I cannot possibly recommend them highly enough, and only hesitate to write this review since I don't want their business to pick up so much that I can't get in and out as quickly as I have in the past. Today, I dropped off my 2007 Honda Element at Tyson's Auto Specialties to understand two repairs Autonation Dulles felt I should have done. After examining my car, Tom walked me through both and explained which I should consider and which was not an issue. Their customer service, patience and extensive knowledge are why we continue to drive the distance to Tysons Auto Specialties and have for over 20 years. Originally, we lived in Reston and it was an easy commute to Tysons Corner. We moved to Brambleton 3 years ago and 20 miles from Tysons Corner. I recently, because of the commute to Tysons Corner, began taking my Element to Autonation Dulles for oil changes only, because it's 4 miles from us. When bringing in by 2004 Mini Cooper, Tom was more than happy to walk me through the possible charges, prices, and possible workarounds in case I wanted to save some money. Just to be sure, he had me bring in my car so he could hear the noise. I was traveling from NY to NC when I sustained a blow out, after hitting some pot holes during a stop in Baltimore. I put the spare on and called ahead for assistance, to several tire places that would be on my route. By far, this Auto shop was receptive to my needs from the minute I called. When I arrived, they remembered my call and immediately were reassuring to both me and my dog. This atmosphere of support and trust was a big relief. The shop was very busy with several walk-ins, however all the staff remained welcoming and accommodating. Took two cars there. First car I specifically asked for battery and tire check. Two weeks later batter failed and Costco charged me to replace the tire (due to tire running too long with low pressure and causing the interior rubber to shred). Took the wife's Lexus in and let the owner know about the previous experience. He barely listened and pretty much dismissed all my concerns. They supposed changed the low beam bulbs, but a month later I found out the left one is not working (fuses blown, ballast seems to be issue. I'm certainly not blaming them for the ballast issue, but I don't think they even checked afterwards to make sure the bulb was working after replacement). The only pro is that it's about half the price of some of the shops out there, but likely because they don't use OEM parts. So take your car here with caution, as I don't understand why its got so many positive results (and if it was just my car and not the wifes car, I wouldn't have posted this). read more

In my 40 years of driving, I have never had a "car guy" that I would regularly go to for auto repairs - until now. I moved to the area only recently, and totally lucked out in finding this place. (Literally, and figuratively.) One of the best things about Tysons Auto Specialties is that when you call or go in, you are almost certainly going to be speaking directly with the owner. THAT'S how important they view their customer service. Once you take your vehicle in for service, you will refer to Tom Ivey (or Service Manager, Richard) by their first names, as if they are a personal friend of your dad's or something. When I've read other reviews when people refer to the owner or manager by first name, I always thought that was because the reviews were written by family friends or someone who worked there. But this is the real deal. I don't personally know anyone there. Though I feel like I do now. Integrity, honesty, convenience, customer service, fair pricing ... all the cliché things you look for in auto repair services are at Tysons Auto Specialties. I've never written a Yelp review before, but my experience was worth documenting to help others who are just trying to find a good place to take their car for service. I knew from the start that I had found my auto shop when I gave Tom a call and asked for an estimate for a new wheel bearing. He was friendly, understanding, and easy to talk to - this seems like it's a lot to ask for in this area and was refreshing to hear after speaking to so many mechanics that would talk down to me or make me feel like I didn't know what I was talking about. Moreover, Tom's prices are very competitive for the area. His price was significantly lower than anywhere else I called (I shopped around for about a week and spoke to at least 5-6 shops). BEWARE!! The previous reviews for this guy all state that his work is high-quality, which I have no reason to doubt, but his price is way off. His labor cost comes in about average, but he's making huge margins on his parts. I came in with a cracked intake manifold, and asked for breakdown of the charges prior to authorizing the work. Turns out he was charging more than TWICE the average price for my parts that were coming out of google searches and other mechanics. When I saw that he was charging $90 per gasket, I knew something was up, and after 10 mins of research, further confirmed my beliefs. If you're going to go with this guy, make sure to ask for a full breakdown of the charges, and spend a few minutes looking at the prices of the parts online. I bought a tire off Tirerack.com and Tysons Auto Specialties came up as an installer. I got my tire shipped to Tysons Auto Specialties so that I could bring in my car and get my flat tire replaced. Overall great experience. Tom seems like a very honest guy who is all about customer service. Pricing for my tire to be mounted and balanced was reasonable. It can be difficult to find a decent mechanics shop in NoVA, but this place is very good despite the fact that finding it can prove confusing at first and the roads leading up to it is chock-full of potholes.
