Walked by and saw they had Basque Cheesecake. It's a nice place, and if the dish were offered to me again, I'd eat it. But it is not Queso Quemada. Had rather a lot of it in Spain, earlier this Summer, so the menu listing resonated strongly. It was listed as a 'matcha' version, which sounded interesting. What came was a light version of a regular cheesecake, but with a covering of brulee'd sugar. I thought it had a matcha crust at the bottom but it turned out to be the same light cheesecake, but with the matcha providing color and some taste, for the lower layer. Again, this is a reasonable product. But it is not Basque Cheesecake. Not the same 'cake' and not baked at a very high temperature, to get the browned and 'broken' top. The 'burned' of quemada refers to the browning on top of the cake, not to an artificial layer of burned sugar. If I had not been fixated on getting exactly what was advertised, I'd probably have given the place 4 stars. But I'll also waited to have more than one dish to base it on... Update: Given the response from the restaurant, I'll note: gosh, add some green tea flavoring and now it's Asian. That's ok, I suppose, but again, it is not "Basque". read more

This place reminds me of NaYa in SF and I would say is a solid option in the East Bay that is like the one in SF without having to cross the bridge. I saw the ube biscoff bingsu on Tik tok and really wanted to try it. They didn't have it on the printed menu outside so I assume it's a seasonal item. I really enjoyed the Ube bingsu! The Ube flavor really comes through, though it's a bit sweet. The cream tastes like cheesecake/cream and it isn't overbearingly sweet. It also has a cool dry ice presentation (to mimic a "volcano") that is fun to watch when they bring the dessert to your table. We were met with such sweet, friendly service! It can get crowded in here, but my friend and I arrived with just a few seats left at the bar table. If you're in the Berkeley area and want somewhere to grab and share some Asian flavored sweets/foods, this is a good place to start! We went on a Sunday evening after dinner, and was packed. If ya don't want to read the rest of this, here's a summary: large variety of savory and sweet items to choose from (too many to try all at once unless you have a big party), 2 bingsoos were great for sharing between the 5 of us after our dinner, good vibes, but definitely on the more expensive side of things. Also, be aware, it's an automatic 20% tip for a party of 5 and for a group 6 or more will be $8/person. Food: 4.5/5 Both of bingsoos we got were pretty spot on for the tea flavors and the toppings were a nice addition to both. Personally, the thai tea bingsoo was a little too sweet for my liking, especially if you added the condensed milk on top of it. So, if you're not a sweets person, I wouldn't recommend pouring all of it on at once. Regardless, I actually wouldn't recommend pouring all of the sauces/condensed milk on top all at once, because kind of sped up the melting process. The organic hojicha bingsoo was my absolute favorite thing. I love matcha and hojicha, so this is a good choice for hojicha lovers (assuming you don't like it too too sweet). It took two associates to look at my order and make sure went through. It took about 30 minutes to get the drink in all which was not the best experience. There are other places in the Bay Area that serve bingsu (Korean shaved ice desert with condensed milk and other things like boba to accent the desert) and pandan cakes ( a cake made out of crepes stacked on top of each other with a sweet sauce pored over the top), but they are clearly the leader in presentation of the deserts ....and price. The good: Ube Bingsu, Bichon cookie desert is amazing with the included crumbled bichon cookies, condensed milk, and boba. The coconut pandan cake is simply amazing, but I might be talking most about the coconut sauce they pile on top. Both deserts are not overly sweet and are flavorful, but the ube ice is colored purple, but has no ube flavor. My wife thinks they should maybe have a crumbled cookie bottom, and would also do the pandan cake slightly differently. The bad: You walk in the front door, and there is always someone ducked down in front of the front counter, both times we have been there, he almost never looks over the counter. The people that work there never acknowledge you right away when you walk in the front door, usually takes 2-3 minutes to be acknowledged, even if they are right next to the entrance and not busy. If your current staff does not have the ability to be friendly hire someone who can be friendly. They serve you water in plastic cups that are so badly scratched that they look dirty. Seriously paying this much for deserts, switch to clean cups made out of glass. The table edges are all worn away, You are charging on the high side for your deserts, fix this. It looks like the place and the cushions need a good cleaning. Is this a first date place, unfortunately not, too expensive, slightly dirty, no acknowledgment at the front door is enough to say pass. If they were able to fix the few things that are currently a negative, this would be an amazing first date place. Food 5 of 5. The deserts are very creative with great presentation and taste amazing. Service 2 of 5: Not greeting customers is not acceptable, deserts came out quickly, as did the worn water cups, and they collected payment promptly. Atmosphere 3 of 5: creative cute atmosphere, plastic water cups, worn table edges, gives a slightly dirty impression. Value: 2 of 5: Need to find a place that serve bingsu for a better price and at least has better service, not sure I am going to find a place that serves you this dessert with such a creative presentation. I found U:Dessert Story on yelp and when I saw they had a hojicha banoffee I just had to have it! We were out and about with our pup, but I saw that they had a patio area so we made an order ahead of time on Uber Eats and sat in the patio area. An employee came out after a bit to take our order. She was lovely. I didn't know we could have done it that way or I would have saved on the Uber fees. When I explained we had an order in, she went inside and grabbed it for us. She was very nice and friendly. My husband doesn't share my sweet tooth, so he had also ordered some fried chicken and wedges. When we opened the bag, I everything looked amazing, but I was worried that the portions seemed small for what we paid. I took a bite of my dessert and was instantly reminded that was I was paying for was quality. The depth of flavor was amazing. The dessert had great texture and taste and I will be getting it again and again and again..... The chicken was cooked perfectly with an amazing crunch and lots of spice and the fries were delicious. They were crispy with a nice crunch and the seasoning was spot on. They also offered water so, after a bite of the chicken, my husband was able to run inside and grab me some. I am such a baby sometimes :) I was glad it was there because we had forgotten to order drinks but their drink menu also looks amazing. I see now why there were people lined up t get inside. I came here to try a croffle ( a croissant/waffle). I'd heard so much about them, and who doesn't love a good croissant hybrid? I tried the strawberry one first since I was told it was the most popular, and it was heavenly. The croissant/ waffle was toasted perfectly brown, so it was crispy and had the crunch of little crystals of sugar with each bite. The whipped cream and strawberries on top were delightfully cool and fresh against the sweet, crispy croffle. We sat there for long enough that we wanted to try another flavor and ordered the oreo croffle. This one was fine but did not compare to the strawberry one. There is also a salted yolk croffle (3 flavors total) The restaurant itself is filled with small tables, and they really pack you in. When I first walked in, the place didn't smell great, and if not for all the hype about the croffle, this place would not have passed my smell test and I would've walked out immediately. I also didn't care for the creepy Halloween decorations. I don't really want plastic severed arms around me while I'm eating. There were lots of couples sharing deserts. Feeling a bit middle of the road on this place. Atmosphere. Cool hip and the place to Be to get good pics of yummy food. Food. The fired brown sugar was crack and I enjoyed watching it made. The crepe cake my husband enjoyed. My mango toast was a high hope but failed. Cons. The service was pretty lackluster. I get that we have a new era of mobile ordering but the issues with the service made the experience not too enjoyable. We had a back side seat facing the kitchen. So we saw all the items going out. We made reservations. Got in and knew exactly what we wanted to order. Ordered. My husband got his crepe cake pretty quickly. I watched them then make the Fired Brown Sugar and then when bringing out my Mango Toast they somehow fumbled the plate and the toppings all fell off. Not a big deal. Was expecting them to just toss the stuff back on but it took another 10 + min and watching our server go back and forth to the kitchen and avoiding my irritated "where is my food" eye contact and me finally asking the server "can I please get my desert" to get a response as to what had Happened to my dish. All Whilst my husband patiently took small bites of his crepe cake to bring me out my desert and it then it wasn't right at all. It was missing the mango ice cream, they used vanilla instead and I think we counted about 6/7 pieces of mango that were extremely hard and not too flavorful. I worked in the industry before and it's common courtesy to notify a patron if you've got to refire a dish due to server error. Even more so if you do it and then substitute out an ingredient for something else. And it shouldn't take 10+ min to refire something like this. It was disappointing as by the time we got it we had both lost our enthusiasm and just brought the leftovers home. All in all. A very cute place and we will be back to try something else again. I was really looking forward to the mango ice cream so hopefully the next time we go it will be better. read more
