I prepaid online early June for a trailer hitch installation on 6/22 at the El Camino location 2-3 weeks from the purchase date. Then got a call near installation date that the hardware wasn't available and would be delayed. Fine. Never heard back. Called it in. Sat on hold for 20 minutes. Spoke to a very empathetic service rep who said he texted the manager who would contact me with haste. Never heard back. Two weeks later, today, called again, sat on hold, cancelled the order to get my money back. Very disappointing experience, non-communicative. read more

I brought the truck back during business hours and was refused a receipt - told I would get it by email next day and it never came. Called and waited 1/2 hour and then was transferred for another 30 minute wait (had to hang up). No receipt. Overcharges. Long waits and HORRENDOUS customer service. Already irritated for having to drive out of my way to pick up the trailer, when we arrived Arlene's service changed all of that. Details: the website doesn't allow for reservations - it accurately locates MV on the map, and then tries to force you to pick one of three locations in Southern California. So you come into the office in person, and everyone in line in front of you has evidently never given a single thought to the move until the moment that they are at the counter and they want to ask 4000 inane questions about packing materials. There's one staffer, nice, but inefficient given how their input system works. Called ahead and was told parcel truck and van are same rate except for mileage charge. WRONG. 10' parcel truck is max 8 hour rental. Also not posted on signage. Wherever you rent, DO get their insurance or assume some risk. These people are straight up crooks. They over-charged me by about $180 on a truck I returned when moving here from Texas (an $800+ rental to start with). I called repeatedly to get the overcharge fixed, and was always told I needed to speak to the manager, and was told he would call back the next day or later that day. Never happened. I finally filed a chargeback with my credit card company for the overcharged amount, and they fabricated "proof" that I had agreed to the charges in the form of additional receipt pages that I'd never seen. Huge hassle and infuriating. I cannot possibly say enough bad things about these people. read more

STAY AWAY....far away. If you need propane or a rental maybe thats ok...but do NOT get hitch work done here. The fucktard that did my work didnt know what the hell he was doing. The hitch installation was a nightmare. It wasnt fitting correctly, the idiot guy tried to fit it in and ended up damaging a wire on the underside of my van! I called the manager who never returned my call ! I finally contacted customer service who in turn made the manager call me back. the manager said come in on Saturday. So yet another saturday wasted. he didnt even look at my van! He handed me the same 1800 number i had already called, then he hopped in his car and left for the day! i was like wtf? So not only did i not get my hitch, they damaged my car. He had the nerve to say...oh well there's no proof. BUTafter the installation i knew there was damage and i called the manager that very moment and left him a voicemail.........also..the guy that worked on my car ended up getting fired by the manager what does that tell you...also the 2 hour installation process ended up taking almost 6 hours.....that OBVIOUSLY tells you too that something wasnt fitting right and the idiot boy didnt know what he was doing. Oh, and my exhaust pipe was rattling after my service there as well. Idiot boy didnt even remember to tighten the screws. lol geez STILL TO THIS MOMENT NO ONE HAS APOLOGIZED. during my 6 hour stay at uhaul there was not one seat to sit in (inside or outside). It was a very hot day and my kids were just burning up and ended up sitting on the oil slicked curb of the pavement. That bitch ass manager didnt do shit or even apologize for the hitch not fitting and my wasting two saturdays. How is his role as a manager differentiate himself from any of the other employees there? He handled nothing. He did NO JUSTICE to the reputable UHAUL company. This manager does a disservice to this company. And it just goes to show no matter how familiar a company is and how long they have been around...it all really comes down to the staff...and how experienced and knowledgable they are... and a lil customer service wouldnt hurt either. Here's the summary on this place: non-existent customer service, poor follow-through, and occasional bursts of rudeness thrown in for good measure. I had them install a trailer hitch, and the only reason they get two stars rather than one is because the hitch is installed properly. Here's a bit more detail. I show up for my 7 AM appointment at 6:55 and I'm greeted with a warm, "We're not open yet." OK, then why is the door open, Sherlock? The guy who's supposed to do the install isn't there yet, nor is he there 10 minutes later when I come back. They act as if they're surprised I'm there, even though I made an appointment a week earlier. The installation was supposed to take less than an hour, so I decided to wait. Big mistake. After 75 minutes I came back and found that no one was working on my car because they had to go get another part, so it was going to be at least another hour. Great. Just what I wanted. Then they told me that they'd call when they were done. Still waiting for that call. The install ended up taking over 3 hours. I'm no hitch expert, so I can't be positive, but the hitch looks like it's installed properly. That's their only saving grace. Well, that and the fact that pretty much every other Uhaul location I've ever dealt with has been an equally poor customer service experience. I will never rent from this company again. Jason is a horrible representation of customer service for any company and Uhaul is doing itself a disservice by allowing him to work there. My mom is moving this weekend. I called to see if I could extend my moving truck rental 3 hours before I was due to drop it back off. I was told by a uhaul customer service associate that it would be no problem if I brought it in after hours or even the next morning. 3 hours later, Jason of UHaul Mountain calls me and tells me I need to return the truck NOW. I told him that I had spoken with someone when I called earlier, who had told me that I would be able to keep it. Jason proceeded to tell me that i "should have been honest about how long I would need the truck" and that I must've spoken to someone at a call center earlier who didn't know what was going on. He wouldn't stop interrupting me and when I told him to stop and let me talk he said "you're just repeating yourself" and hung up on me. Needless to say, I was (am) livid. It is NOT my fault if your company can't coordinate between offices. I've worked in customer service for a LONG time and I would never hang up on a customer. I would never tell a customer that they were wrong when they obviously tried to do the right thing, called ahead of time, and trusted the information they were given was correct. Jason is immature, aggressive, and apparently needs some anger management training. The woman I talked with from U Haul's corporate office, after Jason hung up on me, named Glenys, was awesome. She is the ONLY reason this review is two stars. She confirmed that YES, I had indeed talked with someone earlier and YES it was fine to drop off the truck late. Very much appreciated. This is probably the worst U-Haul location I've ever had to deal with. The female customer service rep at the front (with the tattoos) blew me off before I even got into the store and told me to check in online. When stating that it wasn't working, she directed me to a screen giving instructions on how to check in online. There was only one other person waiting in line for her to help. When I tried to ask for help, she blew me off again. Finally I got I line (with now three people I front of me) to wait for her to help. Finally someone else came and checked me out. Working at U-Haul as a customer service rep, you have one job: help people. Maybe don't be crappy and short with people. It was completely unnecessary and caused me to feel the need to write this review. I recommend a customer training lesson or picking new people to help customer at this particular store. read more

I had the awful experience of using them twice. You MUST get a reservation. One time I showed up early and they made me WAIT until my 8am reservation. Ugh. The main problem is not the people working there. They're dealing w/ @#$! because the place is understaffed by about 2+ people. So, you wait when you get there and wait when you drop off. The manager does the best he can. It's probably one of the worst jobs you could take because everyone wants to get in and get out and there's no throughput. If you must use them, get a reservation. Availability as a weekend walk-in was decent; small trucks were all booked up, but the large size ended up working out well for my friends. They had way more than they thought! (Isn't that always the case... :)) The wait, however, was long. LONG. Goodness. The store has a lot of packing and moving items, if you're in need of anything. Boxes, tape, bubblewrap, dollies, etc. can all be found here - at a premium, I'm sure, but my dad always taught me, "Beggars can't be choosy." Type of Move: I had about 40 boxes (mostly large, a few medium and a couple of small ones for books) and some bedroom furniture (think studio apartment). Because I didn't have very much to move (relative to people who move entire homes), I wanted to find a reasonably priced cargo van (without seats) that could fit my stuff in about two or three well-packed trips. I looked into two rental agencies: U-Haul and Budget. The U-Haul v. Budget Debate: I picked U-Haul over Budget because (1) there were no hidden/extra fees (aside from mileage and gas, which are given); and (2) the price was better than Budget. With respect to #2, Budget gives a 20% discount in general (you can find the coupons online and in the post office when you go to change your mailing address). Even with the 20% off, if you're looking at a pricey cargo van rental and extra fees by mileage and additional charges that lead to horror stories. If you rent a van (unlimited mileage, one day), you're looking at $50+/day, so it's better to go with the U-Haul. Rental Period: The online reservation default is 4 hours. You can actually rent the entire day and they have an after-hours drop-off (so convenient!). Pricing: $19.95/day + $079/mile + gas. Damage Inspection: The cargo trucks aren't in terrible shape, and you're given the opportunity to inspect the truck before taking it so you can mark down any un-documented damage. Drop-Off: So convenient and just like a car rental agency. You drive up to the side of the lot, let the guy record your mileage, check your tank and do a quick once-over and then you're good to go. Insurance: They'll add on an extra $10 if you don't have insurance, so bring your proof of insurance so they can waive the fee. Customer Service / Keep on Your Toes: The manager is Earl, and he told me that I couldn't waive the insurance fee because I chose to accept it online. He said he had to automatically charge me for it. Totally untrue. Keep on your toes and make sure you REJECT any crock they try to feed you about extra charges. Don't Expect All-Star Service: Again, for what it is (a rental agency for trucks and vans), U-Haul does the job. I'm pretty satisfied and would choose them again for local moves. read more

I rented a van from this place, I didn't realize how filthy and full of trash it was because I couldn't see that from the drivers seat. I removed some of the trash during the rental, and when I returned it, I used to app to report that it wasn't clean and I was charged me a $25 cleaning fee. I wrote to them several times to ask about this but they ignored everyone of my messages. I'm genuinely shocked at such shameless behavior. why am I paying to clean your stuff? I have used u-haul in the past and had ok experiences. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE. First I find out they don't have my equipment at the correct location near my house. They make me drive north to mountain view where they tell me I need to pickup the haul truck here, then drive to Santa Clara to get the autotransport. It took me 25 minutes to negotiate with them to call another customer who they convinced to exchange his auto transport location for me. This was actually good that the sales people there did this for me!! They sales people were nice and helped me setup the auto transport. After packing and moving I set out on my trip. Only to find the auto transport tire pops 1 hour in. I inspect the other tires and they are all THREAD BARE. U-haul put me in a truck with unsafe and old tires. To make it worse it takes about 4 hours to sit on the road, wait for u-haul to get a person to come fix it. The first guy they book cancels after 1 hour. Then they call me and tell me a new company is coming. Finally it gets fixed. This puts me back a total of 4-5 hours and I arrive at my destination at 2:00 am instead of 9:00 pm. I file a incident / complaint report and I am assured they will contact me within 3 days. They still have not contacted my correct phone number. I have called them 5+ times requesting to speak to someone, they tell me i have to talk to 1 person only that can handle my experience, but they can't give me his name or number. They continue to promise they leave him messages but I have not received 1 call or email. I used their survey to rate their service. POOR. I emailed their customer service to try to find someone to talk to. NO RESPONSE. This is one of the worst customer service and experience I have ever had.... And... that is in addition to the fact they put me in an unsafe vehicle. Extremely disappointed. I wish I could give 0 stars. read more

I called the local number and made an appointment for a hitch installation at 8am the following day. I received an email confirmation of the appointment with all of the part details. My daughter went at 8am and the Mt View center (managed by Joseph who I spoke to) had no record of any appointment, did not have the part in stock and stated they could not do it. They said it was not their fault that "probably a guy in his house in New York was making appointments for them" What? U-haul has call centers making appointments without communicating with the local office? Is this a public company because if so I'm afraid it's time to sell the stock. read more

So whoever the manager is at this store is clueless. He is a short dirty lookin dude who is not helpful at all. There is another girl who seems like she can't process basic sentences. If either of these two are at the shop stay away! They don't communicate they don't keep you updated and they definitely do not listen. Then they will deny ever getting an order or request and say that the corporate office cant process those requests and you need to contact them personally, except they never pick up the phone so you are forwarded to a call center. My experience was I ordered a hitch for a vehicle and was told by Uhaul that the parts would take 5 days to come in. Cool. I then received a call from a technician about 4 days later saying that the truck was delayed so they would need to push back my installation. No problem. I was called 2 more times to reschedule and when I showed up for my appointment the clueless chick, Brianna or something like that, says oh well your parts haven't even been ordered. I said well you guys called me three times to tell me it was delayed. Then she and the manager both were like "no we didn't call" I was so shocked at their non attempt to even ask my situation or try to help out instead I got " there's nothing we can do it might be here in 2 weeks ( 2days after my trailer rental and move date) when I told them they said sorry. And that was it. Now this isn't all bad. I went in later and dealt with Shalandra. I think that's how you spell it. She was the bomb! She made everything right and explained that the store was reorganizing and sticking its inventory and someone lost the paperwork. She got me fixed up with everything I needed no questions or sass. So lesson here. Deal with Shalandra. Everyone else is pretty incompetent. Or if you do be ready to call corporate 2 or three times to get the lazy manager Jamal or whatever his name is to do anything for you. Deal with Shalandra it will happen right and no fuss. read more

Let's be honest, if you're going to UHaul, you're trying to be cost efficient for a specific reason. They have great deals. Lots of haters for this location but I'm not one. The +'s: + Reception always pleasant both on the phone and physically. Somebody went through training apparently because the representative explained charges to me clearly and helped me choose my rental van vs truck. Yes it's $0.99 per mile on weekdays and $1.09 per mile on weekends. + For $19.95 I get a van or pick up truck for a whole day. That works. + Sometimes there are men on the weekends who are looking for work. I can negotiate for some help on the spot. I haven't done it but I guess it's an option. + Check-in and check-out was a breeze. And yes weekends are more hectic. Set up your expectations. + I've rented from them three times already and have not experienced mayhem. Got my reservation over the phone and picked up my rental without a hitch. + Appliance dolly rents for $10. There are other moving equipment that you can rent or buy on the spot such as blankets, boxes, bubble wrap and etc. + Carpet cleaning machines here too! The -'s: - Hmmm I don't know. Nothing to ding this location on so far so I'm a fan. Have used several times and always have the same experience. Process is always really straight forward and easy, but it can take a while, so if you're in line it can take a while. If you're doing a 9am pickup, get there 15 minutes early and line up outside the door. The manager is moving trucks around and will try to get you started and have your truck ready to make the checkout even quicker and easier. The only issue I've ever had is for a dropoff at a different location. It's harder for Uhaul to manage those, so I got moved around to two other stores when the drop off became unavailable at this location. If you're looking to get moving help on the cheap, there are usually some immigrants hanging around the doors looking for a days work. If they all found work for the day, there's also many outside the Home Depot in Sunnyvale a few miles away. read more

Actually surprised to see this place get such low ratings. My review is a bit late though as it is for a visit I had around 2 weeks ago (08/04/18, around 2:20-3:00) when I had to rush to get around 4-5 propane tanks filled for a birthday party we were having and needed them for the outdoor heaters. We arrived with really no knowledge of where to go or even what to ask. Luckily, someone was outside filling another woman's propane tank and all we had to do was wait. I really wish I had remembered the name of the guy's name because he was really attentive and helpful, even as the payment device kept bugging out outside. It wasn't too full when we first arrived, but we had just arrived before the rush came in, thank god. Felt bad for him though because he seemed to be the only one on staff working. I was surprised to see this location receive such low ratings as we used it twice as a U-Haul truck pick up location for a recent out of town move and everything was very efficient and exactly what we hoped for. Staff was very friendly. I can't remember the name of the gentleman who manages the place, but he was super helpful and kind... He made the entire process quick and easy. Plus, we had filled out most of the information online ahead of time as they recommend so that likely helped expedite the process. For our move, we ended up needing three separate large U-Haul trucks. This location was much more convenient than driving all the way up to the redwood city location which is what we had to do for one of the trucks due to the limited availability of moving trucks in the bay area. The manager gave us a few extra miles since our destination was right at the limit and he didn't want us to have to worry about extra charges. I would definitely recommend this location for U-Haul trucks if you need one. read more
