I am so sorry Udon Kaisha, I dont share the same sentiments as other Yelpers review with regards on what you offer. Perhaps when I was there with A.W on Sunday April 29th 2012 was one of your OFF DAYs. Arrived @ about 12:25hrs for LUNCH. Was seated promptly given the menu, and our server provide us with water. The Menu from Udon Kaisha was simple, with Noodles ($7-$9), Appetizers ($4-$7), Soups ($2-$4), Fried Rice ($8-$9) and their Main Courses ($8-$12). So these were what we ordered that afternoon : * Yakitori - Grilled Chicken Skewers (3 pieces) $4 * Yaki Ika - Grilled Squid $7 * Dynamite Mussels $6 * Agedashi - Japanese Fried Tofu $4 * Unagi Nigiri $4 * Fire Cracker Roll $8 A.W opt for Green Tea while I just opt for water. When our order arrived, the server also provide us a pickled cucumber with kelp of somekind. The disappointment is more towards to the Fire Cracker Roll, coz the spicy tuna, seems not like spicy tuna at all. Since I never had Fire Cracker Roll, I did not know what to expect but A.W was disappointed with her order of Fire Cracker Roll. I forgot to take the pictures of what we did to figure out the ingredients in the Fire Cracker Roll, coz in the list, they mentioned that the Fire Cracker Roll consists of Spicy tuna, in which we tasted was not. Slices of cucumbers are in the Fire Cracker Roll instead of avocado. Furthermore, the roll tasted not fresh at all. The rest of the food that we shared DID NOT WOW us as much as we were hoping for from the raving review from this establishment. How I wish, they could have more flavor in their Yakitori of Grilled Chicken. Same goes to the Grilled Squid, at least with a special sauce or spice to "coat" the Grilled Squid. Perhaps Udon Kaisha speciality is more on their UDON, in which we do not try it, coz we arent craving for those. A Major letdown to drive all the way from Denver to Lafayette. Nevertheless, I wish Udon Kaisha well since YES its tough to open a restaurant as a business in this economy. I have not tried ramen since I came to CO in December. We all finally went and this place was in the right location for us. The server was definitely 9 yrs old and had no idea how to take our order. The ramen was not really that good either. If that's what you're searching for I recommend going elsewhere. I dined at Udon Kaisha during lunch time recently. The waitperson was 100% better. That was appreciated. Bento box was super good. However, there was an issue with price inconsistency at the end. Price of the exact same meal I had during previous visit in December was almost twice as much. No change in prices on menu. Blank space where price of my specific meal would normally be. It truly made no sense. The owner came out and pointed at various items inside and on the back side of the menu. I clearly stated that I ordered this from the bento box section of the lunch menu. The blank space where the price should be was indeed confusing. In the end there was no logical explanation or compromise. Udon Kaisha is a small, locally owned Japanese place in Lafayette. And it is the best Japanese food in the surrounding area! I LOVE this place. The food is fresh and it's the most authentic Japanese food you can get. Some of our favorites: -- Karaage (fried chicken app) -- Vegetable Chirashi Bowl (almost like "vegetable sushi" bowl, just a bunch of really tasty veggies over sushi rice) -- Nabeyaki Udon (noodle soup) Great for kids and families, they also have Japanese beer available (Sapporo). read more

Felt like sushi for lunch today and the reviews and lunch specials brought us in. The customer service was great and it seemed like the other clients were regulars. Overall it was just ok though. I found the lunch specials really lacking. The Catepillar Roll, not on the lunch menu was good, but not very cold. I have a particular distant for warm sushi. Three Cheers for Groupon! My bf bought the groupon because we just love trying new places and WOW were we not disappointed. We had such a lovely meal here! Started with the miso and tempura which were good. Not unlike what you get other places. Their rolls were fresh and delicious! We had the Bangkok with was spicy, light, and so fresh with the cilatron and jalapeno! Also ordered the jumbo spider roll and the soft shell crab in there was close your mouth and savor good!! We had just come from working out and didn't want to order dessert but did so we could hit our Groupon total and WOWWWW talk about divine intervention. We got the Mango Rangoons per the server recommendation and HOLY SWEET BABY JESUS was that good! I wanted to hate them since I had just spent an hour working out but we were literally stabbing each others hands with forks over who got the last one. I love love love when restaurants surprise me. 2nd review. BEWARE GROUPON. this, my 5th or so visit here, was different. The place was full, but it rapidly became apparent the Groupon People were here. Hey, sometimes I'm one of them. The staff was inadequate to the task. A single waiter was obviously stacked up 6 or 7 levels deep most of the time. People were waiting at the door to negotiate groupons, pay their bills, or get a table. People at tables were waiting for food or checks. I ordered Spicy Pineapple Chicken, and it was fine and came relatively promptly. But, it seemed largely per-prepared. The brown rice seemed at least a day old. My partner had worse luck. she ordered House Special Soup, and I had completely finished my meal by the time it had arrived. She took one bite, and said it was like they had dumped soy sauce in it. She sent it back, and they did a good job of fixing the soup, and this time it didn't take too long. We waited some time for the check, and the overload conditions persisted throughout our dining experience. This wasn't the typical experience, and I'm sad to report it happened. My advice is don't come here if it's crowded. If there's at least one empty table cleaned and ready to go, and no one is waiting, they can probably service you well. Your experience may vary, of course. It would be cool if Yelp included "groupon warnings" or "advisories" for restaurants. It would help throttle the crowds. I continue to give 4 stars, but hope this experience does not repeat. read more

Another great find on Yelp!! If you're into noodles, this place is for you. They have a good selection of dishes ranging from fresh sushi, udon, ramen and various Japanese plates. We had an order of spicy tuna for our appetizer, Tonkatsu and Tappenyaki Seafood Ramen for our main dish. The katsu was perfect and not overcooked and the tappenyaki was not over powered with soy sauce and had a good amount of shrimp, scallops and squid. We'll be trying the udon and ramen bowls the next time we are here as they looked very good! read more

I was so happy to hear of an actual authentic Ramen place close by, I just had to order it right away. I have eaten my fair share of Japanese cuisine and have my fave Pho places. Happy news. The food was cooked to perfection. No complaints there. Bad news. Everything was under seasoned. Everything. I made some sauces for the Yakitori but I should not have to do that. The gyzoya, while cooked perfectly, has some bland sauce too. The broth for the ramen was just meh. I think if this place steps it up in quality and adventuresome seasonings, they will be a huge hit. I'll go back again to try something different. Maybe a Bento Box as suggested by another Yelper. For now, my money is on Sakura in Longmont. We tried this place for the first time today. I am a pescetarian (I am a vegetarian who eats fish) and my boyfriend is a vegetarian. We weren't sure how we'd fare at a place that was primarily Japanese, because it's often harder to find items we can eat. But, we were pleasantly surprised by the clearly labeled menu offering plenty of veggie options. For drinks, I had a cup of hot green tea and he had a strawberry-banana milkshake. The tea was really nothing special, just plain tea. The smoothie, however, was very tasty. If we had to guess, we'd say it was mostly fresh fruit and some ice. We started with a Hot Terrific roll. It's a vegetarian sushi roll with fried jalapeno and cream cheese inside, topped with avocado and crunchy bits. They put a drizzle of a couple different tasty sauces on it, too. It was GREAT! My BF has only had "sushi" one or two times before, and never liked it. He loved this and said he'd eat it anytime. Next, we both had the vegetable ramen with miso broth, minus the egg. I added a shrimp tempura, fish cakes and shiitake mushrooms to mine, and thought it was perfect for the rainy day. They provide hot pepper powder and chili oil on the tables for seasoning. We're happy to have a new Asian restaurant in town! I thought the house ramen with shoyu broth was pretty good. The cha siu slices were generously sized, but if I ruled the world they would be made from a nice fatty Boston butt instead of lean tenderloin. And I wish the boiled egg had been simmered in soy sauce - I love the browned and salty goodness when you take that extra step. Yep, in my book, fat + salt = flavor! I did like the addition of steamed spinach to the soup. Yum! I had to restrain myself from giving our cheerful waitress pronunciation tips on "irrashaimase." Extra props for enthusiasm, though! The mochi ice cream presentation was cute, and it was very reasonably priced. In fact, everything was reasonably priced. I'm sure we'll be back to work our way through the menu. read more

I will first preface this: There are most likely things here you WON'T like. HOWEVER, for what they do, the location, and the price, you cannot beat these folks in Lafayette. The tempura is fantastic. Flavorful and mastfully fried. Great portion size and we've never had any bad sushi here. It was our first visit here. After reading several encouraging reviews we decided to give it a try. What a major disappointment! The sashimi was decent so we decided to try more sushi. After the first bite of our spicy tuna crunch roll, we immediately knew something was wrong. The fish was definitely bad. We told the waiter and he agreed to take the roll off of our bill but the chef continued to give us dirty looks for the rest of our time there. We know the difference between good and bad sushi we live in Japan for 10 yrs. We ordered the mochi ice cream to get rid of the bad taste, the mochi was horrible, freezer burned. I sooo hate to leave anything under three stars, however....the tuna in the spicy tuna roll was beyond off - like do not eat this "off". The server did take this roll off our check and asked if it was too spicy. We tried to quietly explain that it didn't taste good, and that they perhaps should try a bite? We left our tray of five rolls with 12 pieces left. This is an absolute first for us in 40 years of eating sushi. Heart-broken really. The pork in the House Ramen was incredibly tough and lacked flavor, and the noodles could have been from a ramen package. The broth was ok, but not full of flavors and umami like other spots. Jumbo spider roll- the two end pieces were fine, but one bite into the middle was an absolute no way are we going any further. Eel and two rolls that had tempura were all cold with all other rolls that came out. Grilled squid was flavorful but tough. Staff was nice and, perhaps an off night. Easily the worst meal I've had in several years. I ordered the house special ramen, and the food tasted very stale to me, and even worse than instant ramen to me. The eggs and noodles in the ramen were bitter and not savory, and I am not sure if my dish was safe to eat honestly. There were hardly any spinach or seaweed in the dish, and no bean sprouts. The broth was sort of salty and bitter tasting- I've never ever had a ramen dish like this. I am almost completely sure that the ingredients were expired as I'm experiencing some stomach discomfort after eating probably 25 percent of the dish. This isn't a restaurant that I would at all recommend, and has food safety issues. The ingredients used in the food are expired, and I would never come again. It was a bad sign to start with that the shop looked cluttered and not so clean, and that there hardly seemed to be any patrons, and it's obvious why- the food is something to write home about in how obnoxiously inedible it is. read more

This is my favorite place around for noodles and sushi. Everything is prepared with care, and the service is warm and attentive. I have only ever dined in, but lots of take-out orders are picked up each time I've been there. I can fully recommend the house special ramen. It's the best ramen I've tried in Boulder County. The broth is rich and delicious, and the noodles are not overdone. And, you get BOTH halves of a soft boiled egg, not just one half like most other shops. The sashimi is always fresh. I like the chirashi bowl best. For $20 you get three slices each of four or five kinds of fish, plus tamago, mushrooms, vegetables, and lots of rice. Citizens of Lafayette, you deserve better. I've lived in Tokyo and eaten Japanese food in various places. Although the order of salmon sushi wasn't terrible (fish was fresh and cut well), the rice was a bit mushy and its volume drowned out the salmon more than it accentuated it; 20% less would've been much better; at $2 per piece this was overpriced. However, the big strikeout was the ramen (ordered the house special for $8.50). First off, no self-respecting ramen place anywhere on the planet would serve it up with dry,lean cuts of pork; you've got to go with juicy,fat-marbled pork belly. Ramen is not a health food, any more than a burger is. People eat it for its taste. Than the egg; it has to be cooked from semi to fully runny, not dry/crumbly boiled. Having both the egg and the pork served up dry is a major error. Also, don't skimp on the garnishes; they are needed in adequate amounts to balance out the richness of the meat and egg. In my bowl barely a pinch of sprouts, I counted about 3, I kid u not. But the biggest, most indefensible faux pas this place makes is in its soup. All other components being roughly equal (generally everyone else is able to get the pork/egg/garnishings done right) a ramen's establishment's name is made or broken on the strength of its soup. The more successful shops in Japan guard the secret of their soup jealously, and often take years to perfect theirs. The bare minimum is boiling down essences of pork bones or kilos of fish overnight in order to reach an acceptable level of depth and richness. To this then is generally added either shoyu (soy sauce) or miso (soybean taste). The soup at Udon Kaisha (I ordered the shoyu option) tasted as though a can of Swanson's chicken broth was mixed with shoyu. It was really flat, had no depth or complexity. Really, it's just a Vanilla Ice wishing he were Snoop Dogg. In a word, it's just a loser. Up your game, Udon Kaisha, the good people of Lafayette deserve a little better, and the Japanese people and its culture deserve a little more respect as well. At the very least, have a look at the movie "Tampopo" to get an idea of how far you need to go. read more

This place was a blessing to find when looking for a place to eat! The food was very fresh, all hot dishes cam out fast but hot! The sushi rolls came out made perfectly and were crispy with all the fixings! I will definitely have to come back! Had my 4 kids with me and all the dishes came out so they were able to eat them as well. They also have katsu curry! One of my favorite japanese dishes.
