On February 14th Zen Sushi became my personal dining hell. The wait was over an hour and a half until our Sushi came out. I then asked for a discount on the bill, and the server got defensive and claimed the wait was due to "everyone else also ordering sushi". Like what do you mean? You're a sushi restaurant. While we usually have a great experience here, we were sorely disappointed this time around. We arrived around 5:50 pm and were seated, with four other tables already sat. After placing our order we got our soups and salads just fine. But as the business picked up with four more small tables being sat and a large party was prepared for, we felt absolutely forgotten. One of the servers got loudly reprimanded by another on the dining floor and everyone involved was embarrassed. Three of the tables who were seated after we placed our order finished their food and paid and left. We asked for our check because we saw no food in sight and they kept telling us "two more minutes." And "no you placed your order after they (the big party) got here." No we did not. We ordered before that table and that table even arrived. We waited for a solid hour until we got our food. We never got napkins. Our waters weren't refilled until our food arrived. I also ordered the Alaska roll the waiter described it as salmon with avocado but it was the ground up salmon in mayonnaise. Not what I was expecting at all so it was only ok. Haven't been here in a while and once again it was not disappointing. My wife ordered the Bento Box, man that looked delicious. I had the Seared Tuna, not a lot flavor and a bit too much Bok Choy. The miso soup was good and the simple salad, iceberg, a couple pieces of slivered carrots and that Sesame Asian dressing. I could eat a bowl of that dressing. I'll give them credit, and an extra star, for being on time with their delivery (we ordered through their website). But the meal itself qualifies as some of the poorest Chinese food I've had in Westminster. Mostly, the food was just bland or ill prepared. The Hot & Sour Soup, as an example, was watered down and over treated with corn starch, making it a flavorless, viscous, goopy fluid. Two spoonfuls and I put it down. The Crispy Duck wasn't crispy at all; it was overcooked and dry, served without any condiments or sauce. The fried rice had been made with a glutenous rice, so it was a gloppy, mushy mess, with what looked like some of those green peas and carrots you buy in the frozen food section at the grocery store. Had such a beyond awesome experience here! Our waiter sat us right away and brought us our drinks within minutes. She was incredibly attentive and made sure we had time to look over the menu. I got the spicy drunken noodles and crab rangoon, my friend got a variety of sushi rolls- the Tokyo roll, the caterpillar roll, and the rock & roll. Our salads were brought out shortly after our order was taken, and then we received our entrees before we were halfway done with our salads. The wait time for our food was maybe 10 minutes, incredibly impressive. Our food was absolutely delicious, the drunken noodles weren't very spicy but had a delicious hot kick to them. My friend loved her sushi, her favorite was the rock & roll and the Tokyo roll. My meal was really cheap considering the portion was large and delicious, it was about $21 for my noodles, wontons and Mountain Dew. My friends meal was a bit more expensive because it was freshly made sushi, she paid about $43 for the 3 different rolls so pretty affordable for the delicious quality. We had an awesome time, the server was an absolute sweetheart and such a hard worker. We look forward to coming back! read more

The curry and poultry dishes are pretty good, but the sushi is definitely better. The Thai Tea is great but not made in the traditional way using vegan/coconut creme (they use half and half). The check was split incorrectly - putting the ENTIRE BILL on my card, PLUS the split shares on my coworker's cards. 4. If I could give no stars I would. Came over on a Tuesday evening around 6 PM. Not busy at all.... Maybe only 6 tables worth of people... 4 tables showed up after me. I waited 38 mins for 2 rolls of sushi after ordering. The waiter was nice and I know now why he gave me a free salad 2 mins after I ordered... It's cuz he knew I would have to wait a long time. The sushi rolls I ordered supposed to have crunchies in them but they both tastes soggy and not much flavor. Needless to say crunch-less. I asked the server about the 'crunch' rolls not being crunchy and he told me it was the way it is. I told him that I would recommend not to call it crunchy rolls if they can't figure out how to make the crunch rolls stay crunchy... It's false advertisement for calling it crunchy and making it soggy when other sushi places can make crunch happen. Should have known when I walked in that this sushi place DOES NOT have Japanese sushi chefs. If you want good sushi near this area try Hana Matsuri by 120th and Federal. The quality is way better and they can make their crunch rolls crunchy. Not to be biased to non-Japanese chefs but not all Asian-looking ppl can make good sushi. I have had plenty Caucasian made sushi that was awesome as well. Anyway... The only good thing about this place was the decor was nice and had nice ambiance. The waiter was pleasant... I heard the lunch menu was good and resonable but I will NEVER come back... Not to mention the fish were not very good. So, it's been 6 months... I finally gave in and gave Zen another try. I still love their fried Shumai. Their Seaweed Salad, served over mixed greens, is great. And their sushi is fresh. We finally tried their Thai offerings this visit. He sampled the Pad Thai with Chicken. We both enjoyed it, and we had enough to take home for a full lunch portion the next day. It's not winning any Thai-Spice contests, though, and was probably quite bland for many heat-seeking foodies out there. For my wimpy palette, though, it was just fine, slightly sweet, a fair amount of onions and omelet, and tender chicken pieces. I also had the Chirashi, which, at $18, was really skimpy, and not prepared in that "special," somewhat "Artful" way I've come to expect. It was sliced fish over rice. There were no Umami touches like Kanpyo, slivered omelet, nothin'. Just Sushi Rice and Sashimi. And while it tasted just fine, I expect more than that when I order Chirashi. (Note the conspicuous lack of photographs from me of it!) The service this time was better. We were at least greeted with smiles, although we were seated at a dirty, unset table and actually had to *ask* to move to a clean one. But, the waiter who relocated us apologized and was friendly. So, up one star you go, Zen, for having some good dishes, some great dishes, and some disappointing but still tasty dishes... and bettering your service. But watch your back -- I'll be keeping an eye on you! Keep those smiles coming. read more
