Great food...could be better. Sauerkraut is too acidic (authentic German sauerkraut usually isn't made with vinegar); wiener schnitzel was ok but the crust was soggy and separated from the meat. I've been a fan of Ulrich's for more than 10 years and was happy to see the establishment carry on after new ownership took over in 2014. Inside, the ambiance is great. It's clean and they've tastefully renovated the space while maintaining the old Ulrich's charm we all know and respect. Today was my third visit (under new ownership) for lunch. The first two times were without incident, but today was a bit inexcusable. We arrived early and placed our order well before the rush, and kept it simple - 3 burgers and a sandwich. It took roughly 30 minutes for the food to be delivered to our table and while 2 of the meals were incorrect, 1 of the meals was forgotten altogether. The server was sincerely apologetic and assured us that the burger would be out momentarily. No problem - those things happen sometimes right? We didn't make a fuss. About 10 minutes later the server came back to say that the meal was flat out forgotten, or maybe another server took it by mistake - she wasn't sure. She said it'd take a little while but our friend's burger would be coming. Add another 10-15 minutes and she came by with a basket of food but instead of a burger it was a bologna sandwich. She didn't even realize until it was pointed out to her that it wasn't what he'd ordered. Epic fail at this point. The rest of our table had already finished their meals. It was another 15 minutes before she finally brought out the burger, and it still wasn't exactly as he'd ordered it. Not wanting to even deal with the thought of going through it yet again he said nothing and just ate. To wait an hour+ for a burger, especially when the restaurant wasn't even half full, is downright inexcusable. I don't know if the communication breakdown was on the part of the server, the kitchen staff, or a combo of the two. We had to ask for his meal to be removed from the bill and got slight hesitation in return, but she did ultimately remove it. You'd think that an establishment like this would make that offering to its customer after a *series* of failures over one simple burger. At a minimum the management should put in place a procedure with its servers to escalate matters such as this to the manager on duty to address and resolve. A happy customer is a returning customer. The taste of the food was overall ok, but with more and more restaurant options cropping up on and around the medical campus, we'll try our luck elsewhere next time rather than return. read more

Lunch bunch visited Ulrich's on a sunny day. It was dark yet cozy inside. Perfect for after work drinks but not so perfect for lunch. One person had the burger, one person had the turkey sandwich, and one person had the potato pancakes. The burger was good, the turkey sandwich was made with deli meat and we were expecting fresh turkey off the bone. The potato pancakes were small and overpriced. We would all go back for beers and but probably not lunch. BTW the service was very good. read more

I don't know if it was just me but I was most disappointed. I so wanted my experience to be better since the new owner, but it was not. This place is still dirty. Dirty coffee cups, sticky floors, dirty bathrooms. The food was only ok, also very expensive. I had the chili....so-so. Seems the staff not very experienced, esp. our waitress, although she was very nice. The bartender was very busy keeping conversation with the two ladies at the bar....non-stop. This place could be a goldmine. Not much more to add except that I won't be back. read more

I had a delivery through grub hub today. Delivery was 40 minutes late. Grub hub driver called and told me restaurant lost my order and had to remake it. Ordered a turkey sandwich that was supposed to come with homemade chips and also a side of German potato salad. I received no chips and the German potato salad was in the box with the sandwich...for what I paid I wanted the chips! Food was average at best. Most likely will not order again. read more

Great place, stopped in for beer and dinner. Hofbrau Lager was great and the pretzel appetizer was really good.

It is quaint, and the beef on weck is supposed great. Not the case, the beef was grizzly and fatty. The kettle chips were just a bag of potato chips plopped on a plate next to a soggy roll filled with fatty grizzly beef. They can do better and should. read more

My girlfriends and I went for a late lunch/early dinner on Wednesday. The back room was empty and we were told to sit at any table. We ordered wine (expensive), not allowed the happy hour wine because we did not sit at the bar....REALLY. To make matters worse the house special .....potato pancakes were undercooked and not crispy. we were disappointed to say the least. What a shame!!!! Was excited to come here when I heard it reopened and saw the fantastic renovation job that was done on the building. Buffalo has a big population of people with German ethnicity and no real German restuarant in the city so a decent restaurant should be a slam dunk. The new Ulrich's however failed pretty big. It's clear it's not a real authentic German restaurant (panini on the menu??) and the bar has mostly microbrews instead of German beers. Could not understand this as German beers and beerhalls have become in vogue in many big cities, certainly all over NYC. Who the hell wants to order Angry Orchard beer at a German restuarant. Food was mediocre at best, old Ulrich's was better. In summary, the place looks great, it's just that everything coming out of the kitchen and from the bar will still leave you longing for a decent German restaurant experience in the city of Buffalo. read more

My German husband and I went there for dinner on a Friday. It was early enough so we had no trouble getting a table though a small one in the corner near the kitchen. We both ordered the borscht which while not traditional borscht was very good and very filling. My husband had the Oktoberfest plate (sausages, sauerkraut and potatoes) - no complaints. I ordered the Rouladen. Good but dry. When my husband told the waiter that traditionally it should come with brown sauce (gravy) on the side, the waiter was very responsive and went back to let the chef know. Hopefully, they will make that addition in the future. The tavern's atmosphere is nice EXCEPT they missed the ball by having a HUGE TV on in the dining area. I understand having a TV on for games, but not at dinner. Turn the thing OFF! read more

I would give this a 5 but every time Ive been there, I have been relentlessly hit on by the bartender named Randy. I was eating at a table and when my friend went out to smoke he kept checking on me while putting his hand on my shoulder. Then he blurted out that i have a very sexy way about myself! We had the French onion soup and the pretzels for appetizers..both yummy. We also shared the sausage....potatoes....and sauerkraut dish...which was delicious. Service got very chaotic and slow when big groups came in....so we were waiting after dinner for desert for a very long time. Would have liked homemade desert the German chocolate cake we shared didn't cut it. Could tell store bought and not fresh. read more

I would just like to let everyone know that the chairs here are absolutely DINGLE I can't lean back without having uncomfortable metal jabbed into my back I'm gonna cry absolute garbage other that that its all good so yeah enjoy the absolutely trash chairs :) read more

Food was great! I ordered a fish sandwich- which was crispy and the tarter sauce was fresh. Unfortunately the service was the downfall. If the waitress - Hanna - whose name I had to get off the receipt because she never bothered to introduce herself - would have checked on us as much as she checked her phone it would have been a much better experience. I really wanted to love my experience at Ulrich's. I took out-of-town company for a week night dinner about 6:00. We were seated immediately, as there was only one other table eating at the time. We ordered beers, which were fine. Three of us ordered a schnitzel dinner, and one, the rouladen. They were served with "German Potatoes," which, were very dark, overcooked, and just ok. The other side was plain, not special, kraut. The schnitzel was tender, but, I had to add salt and pepper, as there wasn't much flavor. My friend's rouladen was almost inedible,as there was so much gristle, and very tough. . He hardly ate any. His sides were the same. I was so disappointed, as I have lived in Buffalo my whole life, and always read about Ulrich's, and it's history. It has been on my bucket list forever. The ambiance was interesting, as I love anything historical, especially, about Buffalo. I hope we hit this place on a bad night, for some reason. I'm sorry, but, we won't be back to find out. read more

the food is better than it used to be, still nothing to write home about. .. but the new owners have no respect for their customers....my friends went for dinner and the owners had their kid in there that was running and stomping through the restaurant disrupting everyone, screaming at the top of his lungs- a high pitched scream that actually hurt our ears so badly we just got up and left and cancelled our order. they didnt do anything about it and although every person in the place couldnt stand it and the other customers who were mid-dinner had to sit through and endure this, the owners just kept drinking and playing darts and ignoring the childs obnoxious behavior. people go out to enjoy a meal and relax, not listen to non stop screaming that is so loud it hurts your ears. absolutely terrible way to run a business. also, they ruin the decor which has black and white photos from the taverns early days by plastering a giant "marines" poster up in the middle of the wall which was so out of place and tacky. read more
