Worst Friday night in a long time. 3 hours w/o water during which I was denied the simple cut I wanted. Instead, I got a hideous cut that was not only the opposite of what I'd asked for, but not in keeping with my lifestyle as I had shared with my service provider. This was 6 weeks ago... This was Ulta's do-over haircut to fix a laughably bad cut I received a couple of weeks earlier at Brentwood. The haircut in the review... this one made me cry. I will keep brief: 1. I arrived before my appointment. Was acknowledged by staff before the appointment. I was acknowledged by my service provider -- let's call her CJ (I just saw a new book about Madam CJ Walker) -- about 30 minutes in. CJ, an experienced Elite stylist, was nice and friendly, but also tired and I think stressed. 2. CJ was distracted for the entire appointment because she was working on 2 of us at once. The other person was an employee of the retail space who was having color done. This employee/guest had opinions on everything, including on what happened to my hair. She kept interjecting into my conversation with CJ. CJ also was busy on Face Time. 2-3 young women who work at Ulta (I'm not sure whether the salon or the retail space) were back in the salon hanging out, gabbing, and I think slowing things down. 3. I asked for a swing bob. I clarified what a swing bob is because people keep getting it wrong. CJ is supposedly an expert in bobs and pixies, but still, I provided extra info: that what I wanted was a bob, shorter in the back, longer in the front. Eventually she told too much hair was taken off the back to make a swing bob. I said OK, a bob with some angle. OK, she said. I also stated that I am very low maintenance with my hair, and I don't put product in my hair because I have migraines. CJ studied my hair. She asked if she could do face framing. I might have cringed because I don't like face framing on me. I came in wanting the hair longer in the front. She made it sound like this face framing would be different from what I remember from the mid-2000s. And you know what? It was. She gave me what amounts to bangs. Bangs before summer. Bangs! Now I wear a bandana to keep my hair out of my face as I do physical therapy. Now I can't wear my hair in a ponytail all summer. I like low maintenance hair; she gave me bangs. CJ also said she cut the hair a certain way because of the highlights I have. Um, what? Highlights get covered. Don't use my highlights as a reason to botch a haircut. The website says haircuts are up to 1 hour. Mine should have been less than that. She put mousse in my hair and she sprayed it. I had told her I don't do those things. The haircut was worse with the product. She turned it into such a terrible 80s hairstyle that made my face look so triangular. I am more old Hollywood, 1930s. I left with tears in my eyes. She didn't say anything. The next few days I spent driving around to vintage shops to buy head scarves to cover this wreck. It's the stupidest cut I've had in I don't know how long. Positively awful. I look so old and inelegant on bad days. About every 2 weeks I have a decent day and while it still isn't the cut I want, I don't feel angry about it. I can take a meh cut if it's one I wanted to try, or if I wasn't specific enough. But I wasn't. It took 3 hours to get this cut. I could have given myself something closer to what I wanted and I do not cut hair. The management here needs to do a better job of supervising. Make sure they aren't goofing off with other employees while working. They should not only hear the customers, but listen to them. Questions for Ulta/CJ: * Why didn't you have a dedicated time for me? Why did you think it was good customer service to prioritize a staff member rather than a customer? * Why didn't you just give me a bob? The manager at Brentwood said it would be an easy fix to get a swing bob. It should have been an easy fix. I am a playable character. * Why didn't you offer me something to drink? Your water fountain was out of order, but where did you staff members get water? * Are employees always this unfocused at work? * Why didn't a manager follow up with me after the experience? I texted the Brentwood manager (whose number I had from the previous poor cut customer service) who said she'd do something about it. Crickets. read more

The associate who was at the pick up counter was extremely rude. She failed to acknowledge me for a good 5 minutes until I had to say "do I need to ask someone else for help?" She then proceeded to say "oh! I didn't know you said anything". I'm sorry, you act like you don't see us standing here and I'm supposed to be the one saying something? She then finds my order and tries to mumble low by saying "you still could've said something". And I AGAIN, reminded her that she's supposed to be greeting customers. NOT the other way around. I'm sorry, when is it okay to be rude to people spending their money, just wanting to be helped. I will go to every Ulta in my area before I ever return to this one if it's okay for the people who work here to have that type of attitude & pretend to be busy by picking up the same packages that they just picked up and highlighted on a paper, just to avoid helping a customer. Regret even spending my money here. You didn't hear me say anything; which means that you KNEW I was standing there and just decided to not acknowledge me. Does it get any ruder? Very poor customer service. The coupons never cover anything useful in the store and have very short timeframes for use. Items frequently out of stock with no apology or effort to find the item at another location. Bought mascara the other day and a different product was inside the box when I got home. When I went back to exchange it there was no apology for the inconvenience which would have at least made the incident more tolerable. They are VERY eager to try to get you to sign up for their credit card but not so eager to help in any other way. read more

Whenever I need a pick me up, I visit Ulta Beauty. I can spend two hours in there perusing the many aisles of cosmetics, shampoos, nail polishes, blow dryers, straighteners, etc. I can't get out of there without spending a small fortune, but that is not because they are over priced. It is because they have so many phenomenal products in one place that it is too hard for me to resist. I used to go to Macy's or Nordstrom's for all of my cosmetics like Lancôme, Clinique and all my perfumes but they have quite a selection in Ulta and they do take coupons if you get on their mailing list. They also have a rewards program. If I run out of mascara, it is a lot easier to run in and grab it from Ulta Beauty than it is to park and walk through the mall where at times I end up spending more on clothes because I discovered a good sale. There is always someone in Ulta Beauty to help you find what you are looking for. If you who need your hair cut, dyed, styled, etc., there is a hair salon in there that I have been meaning to investigate and but I always get so enamored by the product selection that I forget to inquire. Caitlyn was friendly but didn't really seem to be paying attention to why she was doing or what I wanted during my haircut. She nicked herself which, whatever, stuff happens, but she didn't sanitize her shears or herself after, and went on with another employee about how they never bother sanitizing their cuts! Now, the haircut itself.... I had asked for a blunt cut, cutting the back of my head to match the length of my bangs. Blunt cut means All the hair is one length, no layers. After cutting my curls wet and combed straight she then fluffed pulled and and twirled my curls so it still looked blunt and even when I walked out but by the time I got home it was obvious she had not done what I had asked all, because the back is inches longer than the front. My hair is only barely shoulder length so it kind of looks like a mullet now that it's dry. I am really annoyed because she kept saying how easy of a request it was and how she didn't have to take very much off.... but she didn't do what I asked at all, as you can see in the photo that is NOT a blunt cut. I'll admit I walked out feeling satisfied and only was not after it dried, when I wrote this review in lieu of going back to complain, but after this poor of a job she claimed was soooo simple I don't really trust them to attempt to fix it either. read more

I have to say the Brentwood location is my favorite because it is more diverse but I hate the parking situation over there. I have noticed that this location is slowly diversifying. They have a great selection of products from cosmetics, fragrances, styling tools and hair products. The employees are very friendly and seek to find answers for you when they do not know. I love the prices and consistant coupons. Also a huge plus for me is that you are able to try products and if they do not work for you, you can return them. My hair texture is constantly changing and when I find my go to product my hair will let me know it no longer likes the product any more so it's a hassle switching on my go to faves. They have practically everything - make-up, skincare products, shampoo/conditioner, styling products, hair coloring, nail polish, brushes and combs, plus things like cotton balls and Q-tips. Where else can you buy Maybelline mascara, Redkin shampoo, OPI polish, Bliss moisturizer, and Gillette razors all at the same place? I don't know of anywhere. It's true the service is nowhere near what you would find at Sephora or Beauty Brands, so just know that going in. They also don't have the selection of either so if you're doing serious cosmetics or hair products shopping and need assistance then don't go here. But if you're looking for one place you can go to get almost everything you need beauty-wise, then do. It seems like they have pretty good sales, as well. I visited this location in hopes to make a gift basket for a friend. They have an awesome sale going on right now. (50% off clearance items) The manager LANNIE POIYER (not sure of correct spelling) was the one that "helped" me. She was very rude and short. Her non verbal cues shouted poor attitude and customer service. She acted as if she didn't want to be there. She rang all the sale items in incorrectly. I thought the price was kind of high when I paid so I double checked everything before I left the parking lot. I noticed I was charged $30 over. I went back in the store and asked for her to fix the issue. At this time she was ruder than before. She didn't fully explain what was happening with the "void" or "refund". At that point I felt like she didn't give a damn that she overcharged me or to even explain why she was trying to charge me $26 after reringing everything. I just told her to forget about it and left ALL items returned. If this is the type of customer service Ulta is allowing then I don't even want any parts. I heard that ulta does brow mapping so I was super excited for someone to finally "get it right". I ended up being super disappointed... she barely said a word to me and was talking to other employees/ looking outside the whole time. I'm pretty convinced at this point is that this company's entire business philosophy can be summed up as "If we give them enough free stuff, they won't care if we provide zero customer service." I've had my fill of being entirely ignored by the Brentwood store so I ventured out here to see if maybe this store was any better. Spoiler: It's not. Brentwood at least always has plenty of employees who seem to spend their shifts talking to each other instead of customers. This one was pretty empty when I visited. The only person helping customers was apparently the store manager. She was nice enough when I talked to her but I only got to talk to her after asking the cashier where to find something. I just don't get it. If I go into a Sephora, I immediately have a sales associate trying to help me no matter how dressed up or down I might be. At Ulta, it doesn't seem like they care. Whether you're here to spend $10 or $100, they'll ignore you equally. The loyalty program here is pretty great and the online shipping is usually decent so I'll keep shopping with Ulta but I will continue to avoid the stores whenever possible. read more

I narrowed it down to two colors and took them both with me to the register and asked her to tell me which she thought was better. I picked out a couple of other things and was on my way. Don't get me wrong, I like Ulta. I used to live by a number of them when I was in another city - they're like Sephora for poor people. But there are none near me so I happened to be running errands in Ballwin for a few other stores that are nowhere near the city. Went in here looking for a specific conditioner - much like Pat C., I walked around, walking, walking, walking . . . no one asked me if I needed help. In fact I didn't see an employee until I was ready to leave. The two girls at the registered made me stand there waiting while they continued their personal conversation - when they got to a stopping point, one offered to ring me up. She asked if I had an Ulta rewards card - I do, it's old. As I mentioned I don't live near one of these stores and haven't been inside one in quite some time. After a few exclamations of how old my card was and how she wasn't sure if it was work, she rang up my order. If Sephora got really drunk and had a torrid one night stand with the cosmetics section at Walgreen's, their baby would be Ulta. Ulta seems to be split into three sections: -the cheap cosmetics on one side, -the nice cosmetics on the other, and -a salon in the back Sales staff will help you pick out the nice cosmetics. They will give you samples and show you how to put them on. They will not do that for the cheap cosmetics. There are also appliances (I don't know, what else would you call flat irons, hair dryers and epilators), fragrances, candles and Ulta brand body washes and shampoos. A very nice young man spent almost 20 minutes helping me pick out a lip stain, only to find out that they didn't have it in my shade in the nice cosmetic section, nor did they have it in my color in the cheap cosmetic section. So yeah, Ulta was decent, but not nearly as satisfying a shopping experience as Sephora. Not nearly as expensive, either. read more

Went Saturday and was clearly lost wandering around the store looking for what I needed. Couldn't find it. Walked, walked, wandered, wandered. Nobody offered to help me, until I was about ready to walk out. As it turned out, I was standing right by the display of the item I needed, so she didn't have to help that much. But I told her exactly what I needed, she retrieved it, and I checked out pronto adding this purchase to my Ulta Club membership. DO NOT GO TO THIS ULTA! Horrible experience with hair stylists DEB and MADISON. After my usual hair stylist was booked up for the rest of the month, I decided to take a chance with ULTA. I came into my noon appointment only to wait 45 min while Madison took in another client at MY appointment time. After my long wait, Deb sat me down and looked at my hair-- pulling and tugging on my ends. After examination, she decided it was far too "damaged" for her to do anything. She told me what I wanted done to my hair would look awful. Angry, I left and I am sure to never return. Interestingly, as I made an appointment with a REAL salon the next day, I got my hair done exactly how I wanted it and it turned out beautifully. I am one who use to shop only at Walmart or Target for cosmetics. I'm not an over the top makeup user. Just the basics usually and I'm good to go. Then one day someone opened me up to the world of Ulta. Now I don't go there all the time but I usually go there when I know I can get a good deal, usually on the major makeup essentials like concealer, powder, etc. They send out coupons each month and they will save you a lot of money on your purchases. I have eyeballed their salon a few times and may go there one of these days. I've shopped at several different ulta stores and this is by far the worst. Customer service is horrible! This was my second time at this particular location. I did get a friendly hello when I entered but while searching for what I needed no one offered to help which is very unusual as far as all the other ulta locations. While I was looking a woman was returning a product and the manager was just plain rude. The woman was friendly and told her she was not being confrontational but was just trying to understand their policy, the manager still didn't get it. She just said it was too complicated to explain and it's $1.10 difference so hear you go. So sad I wanted to say something that is how poorly she treated this woman. Anyways still searching and finally settled on something. When I got ready to check out there was another girl up there helping and thankfully I got her. I asked if they could do a price check on two different items bc obviously prices weren't on the package or available where I picked the items up and the stupid manager asked if I would like to step aside and let someone else checkout. Wow! No I want a price check which the other associate did and then I was out of there. Afterwards my daughter and I went to Walgreens for a few things and the associate there was so friendly went out of her way to help us and at the end gave us free samples. While walking out we both said at the same time- now that is customer service! I will never return to this particular ulta again! read more

I really don't like going to this Ulta. As previously noted, the customer service is subpar to put it nicely. On several occasions, I've come in at fairly slow times and never been asked for help. As someone who works in retail, I know how important that is to sales, so it's surprising that management doesn't encourage customer engagement. One particular time, I came in looking for a specific hair tool. After circling the hair tool section about four times, I still couldn't find it and decided to ask somebody (because I had checked online and they said that they had the product in stock). I looked all around, and the only associates were either talking with each other or walking swiftly around. I decided to circle around a couple times, waiting for somebody to notice that I had been there for about 15 minutes now. The more I circled, the more annoyed I got. I decided to leave and go get my tool at the Walmart behind Ulta, which I found in less than 3 minutes of walking in. Another time, the girl checking me out accidentally scanned the $50 palette I was purchasing twice and I didn't realize until after I got back to my car. When I returned, the girl looked annoyed and didn't offer any sort of apology as she refunded me. Once again, as somebody who works in retail, I can't understand the attitude she had with me and get annoyed that I didn't get an apology. Had I not noticed, I would have been charged $50! Everyone is so friendly and helpful and if you shop the sales and coupon offerings it is pretty economical even for some of the "prestige" brands. Rude beyond belief! I swore off Ulta about a year ago... thought I would give it another try... wrong! They have a 50% off sale on Living Proof in 2 days but I went yesterday with a 20% off coupon because I needed the shampoo and conditioner. Was told the coupon couldn't be used in this item. Even though it was not in the prestige section. So I'll return in 2 days and pay less for what I was willing to buy. Last time I bought this item from Ulta the 20% coupon was accepted. I just moved to the area a few months ago and have been completely neglecting my brows because I haven't found a good place to go. Then I decided to stop in at the Benefit Brow Bar which is actually inside Ulta Beauty. I've gone to a benefit brow bar before in other cities I've lived in and trusted they were trained and would do a good job but i got way more than I expected! I just blindly called and made an appointment with no idea who would be doing my brows but I got so lucky by chance that I got Leia B. She gave me the brows that I've always wanted but never could articulate or was too scared to ask for fear of them not turning out well. She was so sweet and also showed me some tips with filing in my brows, something I've never really needed so I've never tried to do until now. It's been a few days and I still can't stop staring at my brows! Definitely ask for Leia! You won't be disappointed! read more
