    Deluxe sushi

I'd consider Uma Sushi mid-tier sushi - it isn't a quick, cheap sushi spot, but it also isn't very pricey. It's an excellent option when you're looking for a high quality meal without breaking the bank. I ordered the deluxe sushi and I believe my friend did as well. The fish and seafood are fresh and the rolls were put together neatly. The restaurant is small, but had a nice cozy feel to it, and the staff were friendly. I'd go back again when I'm in the area.

Just a simple but very delicious lunch. This is the aburi set! I made some slight changes to switch out the saba and ika though! The shiitake miso soup is sooooo flavourful and warming. Definitely add it to your meal! Service was fast and quick. We dropped by before right when they were about to close and they were still very accommodating and let us finished our meal without us feeling rushed. Thank you!

I may have found my new sushi spot! A hole-in-the-wall style gem, nothing fancy but the food. Very fresh sushi with a few unexpected yet interesting flavors; think mint, truffle and foie gras. I crave a good salmon oshi and theirs did not disappoint! Our group finished our meal with a delicate Yuzu mousse cake. My only concern was the subpar service. Our server was friendly yet inattentive however, the quality of the food overshadows this detail.

We wanted to eat at an authentic Japanese restaurant, and were hoping to try one that we hadn't already tried before. After a bit of searching on Google, my husband chose Uma Sushi . It's a small and quiet restaurant, only about half a block away from the busyness of Cambie St. With a 4.5 star rating on Google, it sounded like a very promising restaurant so we were very much looking forward to this meal. Featured here: Unagi Donburi Aburi Sushi Assorted Sashimi Baked Scallop Air Fried Prawn Tempura Takoyaki Avocado Roll Dynamite Roll Scallop Mayo Sushi Donut Tuna Lover Sushi Donut Saba Oshi Ingredients were fresh and everything was nicely prepared; however, given the high ratings this place has received, we were honestly a bit disappointed with this place. While we couldn't really find fault with the food, we just weren't blown away by it either. Their sushi donuts were visually stunning but when it came to eating them, they tasted quite ordinary and handling them was a bit of a challenge. Just my own personal opinion: Perhaps air frying them into Yaki sushi donuts might have made them easier to handle and given them a bit more flavor as well? Aburi Sushi was good but we felt that we'd actually had better Aburi elsewhere, at restaurants with lower ratings. A cute mom and pop shop that serves fresh sushi for such a reasonable price! Came here before catching our flight, and we made the reservation right before getting there and it was no problem. Once we got there, the restaurant started getting packed and we noticed we didn't get our food for quite a while. We were worried we'd be tight on time in getting to the airport and notified our waitress of this. The store owners were so accommodating and pushed out our orders quicker by separating our combos into smaller plates first so that we can start eating while the rest of the food came out. We got the Uma special sushi set + added uni pieces for each of us (there were 6 of us). The owners were so sweet in bringing out five pieces of sushi first for each of us to get us started while he continued rushing the rest of that combo out in another plate. Super sweet of the restaurant for doing this! The combo set was super fresh and tasty for such a good price as well. The Uma Special Sushi combo was $32 before tax and comes with 9 pieces of nigiri and 6 pieces of rolls. The added uni sushi piece was the perfect end to the meal! Highly recommend coming here for lunch as the prices are reasonable and they serve super fresh fish!

Loved how cozy it is here! Got the Aburi sushi combo ($30), Baked scallops ($8.50) and some assorted nigiri! I loved how fresh everything was, and service was friendly and prompt. I found the sushi combos super worth it, and I'll definitely be back to try the other sushi combos! I noticed they put a peice of perilla leaf inside the aburi, and it really adds a new dimension! Baked scallop was alright - the sauce was good, but nothing amazing - would suggest getting more sushi/nigiris as it's super fresh! Tried the foie gras nigiri ($6.50) and found it super cool! I personally enjoy my foie gras with bread, but definitely recommend trying it! Also the Ika nigiri ($3) was soooo tender. Normally Ika is pretty chewy, but this one blew me away by how tender it was!!

Beef lunch combo. Soup flavorful, not salty. Beef tataki and side veg very delish. Would get again.

Nice quiet atmosphere. Menus with lots of pictures. Quality food at good prices. Excellent service.

Outstanding food excellent service and all kinds of my favourite Japanese-Chirashi-don can't ask for more. This was actually my first time eating something made in an air frier honestly can't see what the Big Deal is but the Prawns were good as was the Tartar sauce. The Baby Kale Gomae had a saltier spicier dressing than usual one of the Best I've ever had and I generally avoid Kale. Next time I'll try a different bowl maybe the one with Sablefish another fave of mine. Anyway if you're looking for a cozy neighbourhood place this is it and it's close to everything.

Amazing quality for price at this sushi spot! We were able to order a huge spread of nigiri plus a chirashi bowl and some specials (they have a huge specials board), all without breaking the bank. This is the kind of sushi spot that I wish would follow me around to wherever I live.

Delightful spot for sushi and Japanese food. I got a seat for one right away at the counter spot. I ordered an assorted chirashi donburi ($18) and it was a great lunch meal. Fish tasted fresh and the rice was cooked perfectly. I enjoyed the salmon, tuna, octopus, tamago and inari.

Omg just so good. Ordered catches of the day and Aburi sushi among assorted sushi's. My fave was the engawa (flounder fin). So buttery. I love how the mayo on the aburi is seared, giving the sushi a more creamy taste. The sockeye salmon was fresh and delicious too. I will be back. If not, I'll be dreaming of this sushi for months on end

The nigiri and sashimi here are very fresh and tasty with a lot of different choices. The service is good and price is reasonable. Only shortcoming is they don't offer much other cooked food. Definitely one of my favorite place for sushi.

Okeya Kyujiro is a Michelin one-star theatrical omakase restaurant, and when they say theatrical, they mean it! From the moment you're welcomed by smiling ushers in kimono to the closing tea ceremony, every movement feels intentional, precise, and elevated. The ambiance is serene and anticipatory. At the start, guests sit in silence as a black screen conceals the chefs. You see their shadows moving behind it. A bell rings, the screen lifts, and the performance begins. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. The finale is a matcha ceremony, whisked in front of you with the same quiet precision that defines the evening. When the final sip is taken, the bell chimes once more, the chefs and staff bow, and the screens close. It was a beautifully choreographed dining experience, perfect for marking a special moment, and one I'd gladly return to for the next celebration.

This is a more theatrical style so expect louder music and a more theatrical experience (eg one of the servers played the flute for the guests celebrating birthdays). I prefer a more intimidate and interactive style of omakase where you can talk with the chefs. This lunch also felt a little fast in terms of progression of the meal. Some of the dishes were very tasty while others didn't wow us. With drinks, we were quite full despite some reviews saying portion is on the smaller size. Our total was around $500 with drinks for 2 people. A really good experience for omakase, especially if you are looking for a unique experience though not my favourite one I've tried.

Me, I know nothing about Izakaya or what is or isn't authentic Japanese cuisine, so this review is coming from someone with zero knowledge or expectation of any specific foods or experiences. Despite it being a weeknight, the place was packed. It was good that we had a reservation. There was a couple in line before me and they were walk-ins, and there were no available seats for them. I noted how small this place was, and crowded, with the tables close together and a long bar with a counter and barstools there (also close together). Our reserved table was right by the front door - literally, - so every time the door opened, we got a gust of cold air (and it was a cold February night when we were there). I kept my coat on. Truth be known, I was not very comfortable. Also, it was loud. Very loud. I like how the staff shout Japanese greetings to diners whenever they enter but between the frequent shouts and the sheer volume of chatter from all the diners, all sitting close together in close proximity, it was kinda hard to hear what my friends were saying during our dinner. That said, the environment was super vibrant and, again, my friends said this was very typical of an Izakaya in Japan. Food-wise, I have no idea what my friends ordered. The menu was primarily available by way of a QR code and I had no idea what the dishes were, so I deferred to my friends' knowledge. But I can attest that all the dishes were DELICIOUS. We had some sort of Japanese street food "pancakes" (they were wonderful). We had some sort of stirfry beef with noodles (amazing). We had two types of sashimi (omg both were so fresh and so so good!). We had a few other dishes that I can't recall, but I remember I loved them. So.... the food here was GREAT. Service was also attentive which I hadn't expected, being as busy as the restaurant was. I really liked this place but I'll probably go back in the summertime when the weather is nicer as I was cold there, and I'd dine at an off-time, when the volume wasn't so loud. (I'm too old for the loudness!).
