This place is the definition of hole in the wall. My buddy brought me here and I didn't know what it was until I was walking in. Friendly staff. They all greet everyone as they walk in. Always takes time to chat and comes back enough to make sure we are always taken care of but not enough to be bothersome! I've been ordering my food from this restaurant for more than seven years and the food tasted awesome. I understand after the pandemic a lot of businesses were affected, and food portions got smaller, but it should not affect the QUALITY and TASTE of the food. Since last year, we noticed some of our favorite dishes weren't tasting the same anymore and we stopped ordering from this restaurant as much as we used to. But as of yesterday, that was our last visit. My daughter ordered Mongolian beef, and I ordered Yakisoba with shrimp to go. Once we got home my daughter opened her container of the Mongolian beef and immediately said, I'm not eating that without even tasting it. So, I tasted it and did not blame her one bit! The Mongolian beef had so much sugar in it, I had to immediately spit it out, it was so sweet! The Yakisoba with shrimp didn't taste good at all, and I gave both dishes to my granddaughters. I'm going to miss my Yakisoba, but I can't see myself returning to a restaurant and paying for a dish that's going to make me gag, ESPECIALLY when the owners care more about the money than ensuring you have returning customers because the food taste so good. read more

I have been looking forever for good Sushi in Pierce County. Well, here it is! Umai is the best sushi I've had since I last went out to the east coast. As a vegetarian, it's also very enlightening to see such amazing vegetarian options for both sushi and other main dishes. But, let's start from the beginning. As soon as I walked in the door, I was warmly greeted by the waitress and sushi chef. The staff always have a good attitude and positive energy. And, they take their job seriously. I'm usually skeptical of the one stop sushi / teriyaki destinations littering the Seattle - Tacoma area, but working just down the block, I had to try it out. Otherwise I might have missed out on this amazing find. The sushi here is divine. My non-vegetarian friends were impressed by the freshness of the fish, and the quality of the meals. I was impressed by the to-die for Tamago (a sweet egg nigiri sushi). The vegetarian rolls all have the perfect combinations of veggies and are peppered with sesame to bring out the flavor of the vegetables and rice. But, sushi is not for all, and Umai does not disappoint. I was particularly impressed by the Teriyaki Tofu. Battered with tempura and in a sweet and tangy Teriyaki sauce, this was a fabulous dish for those not interested in Sushi. Umai is a rare find for this region, and at very reasonable prices. I give this restaurant my highest recommendation. I just pray that I can resist the temptation of such good food within walking distance of where I work. If it weren't for a budget, I'd probably eat there 5 days a week! read more

This has been out local favorite asian cuisine since we moved to the area three years ago. We have ordered several times through the pandemic and to go. This was our first time dining in and I'm sorry to say it will be the last. We also rarely go out to eat as a family so we ordered the family special. We asked to switch our a couple of the entrees as we are not meat eaters and to have the fried rice made without egg due to our son having a diagnosed egg allergy. They were initially not pleased to accommodate us with the changes but agreed and ultimately forgot to enter the order in correctly for the rice without egg. When the Owner became aware of the error she was only concerned if my son had already eaten the rice with egg accidentally and when I said no because I had noticed it she was fine with leaving it at that. When I asked if she would give a discount or make a new small order if rice without egg she fussed that she would need to see. She returned and agreed but even with it being their error she was reluctant and made sure we knew a lie that the platter s were supposedly pre made and in the future they would not make exceptions or accommodations. All of this was relayed to us as a family and in front of my 7 year old son who had allergies. WOW! Goodbye Umai. Putting profit over safety and customer satisfaction with result in loss of business and likely future closure. read more

We Went tonight because the waitlists for other places in town were an hour or more. We got seated and then didn't have drinks or anything until 25 minutes plus of waiting. Thomas and I LOVE this place, and have come time and time again. They have made, hands down, the best rainbow roll I've ever had. The sushi is always well made and plump and have about five - seven cuts each. I'm a big fan of their bento boxes, which are very cheap and immensely filling. While they are very pretty, but don't look like much coming out it really does satiate your hunger. The customer service here is always spot on as they aren't constantly by your side, but they definitely refill drinks and tea in a timely manner. Also their green tea ice cream is awesome. read more

The sushi was fantastic. The sushi eaters had 12 pieces of sushi and 2 rolls. The fish was really fresh and tasty, and I'm pretty darn picky with sushi. The rest of the family had chicken and shrimp bento, which they thoroughly enjoyed, and they were not happy about going to a sushi restaurant. The only reason they got 4 stars and not 5 is because we waited a few minutes before getting service, but the waiter said the waitress who was supposed to be serving us was late. Best affordable Asian cuisine I've had since moving to Washington. I got a takeout order of the Family Party for 3, one of the House Special Sushi Rolls, and a side order of egg rolls. The teriyaki was tender and flavorful, without having that overly sweet doused-in-teriyaki-sauce flavor of some of the cheaper places in town. The chicken fried rice was moist and amazingly fresh. The chicken katsu was crispy. The sweet and sour chicken was probably the best sweet and sour I've eaten in years, if not the best I've ever eaten. The gyoza (fried) was crispy and delicious, the egg rolls were still crunchy and packed full of cabbage. Did I mention the sushi? Best sushi I've had since moving to Washington, and leaps-and-bounds ahead of Trapper's Sushi. The staff was friendly and efficient, the restaurant was comfortingly clean and well-organized, with plenty of space to sit and walk about. The staff speaks English well, so language is not a barrier for those of us lacking in Asian language fluency, and they are very willing to answer any questions regarding menu items. The menu is large, the food is reasonably priced, and there is a variety of dishes from the most popular culinary regions of the Far East. Next time I will have to try some of the other items on the menu, and believe me, there will be a next time. read more

Oh My UMAI...!!!!! I cannot even tell you how excited I am that this place opened! This is by far the best sushi I have had! So good that I went 2 days in a row! The fish is super fresh and cold, the rice is perfect and the portions are large! The salmon, yellow tail and eel are my staples and the quality here is great! I also like to try different types of rolls as a variety! The spanaway roll was delicious! And the tekka maki rolls are yummy also with big chunks of tuna! They also have great miso soup and green tea ice cream. If I could afford to eat here multiple times a week I would! And the bonus is Umai is walking distance from my house! Those of you who are familiar with Spanaway know that decent places to eat are hard to come by so the addition of this restaurant is a major plus for the not so fabulous area! read more

My opinion of this place has gone down a bit from my last review. I have gone here many times since then and noticed the service has delined a lot. The place is also looking more run down. I am almost never acknowledged when I walk in...basically have to try to get their attention before I can be seated. I can hear this woman, I believe is the owner, always yelling at her servers. One time the lady actually spilt hot soup on a customer and didn't seem very apologetic. There is duct tape on the seats. Their door to the restaurant has broken/cracked glass that they have neglected to get fixed for probably over a year now. But there is one reason, an important one, that I always come back...the food is always delicious. I can't give up the addicting sushi or the japchae. When you come here you can expect bad service, ugly worn down atmosphere, and amazing food. read more
