This is a standard hotel pool bar. The food was pretty good and delivered 15 minutes after ordering so except for the price, I'm not sure what more you could ask for. My husband loved his fish tacos and my daughter loved her potstickers. The fish and chips were well fried but I didn't care for the pineapple tartar sauce, but that was my bad - it was well described on the menu. The chicken tenders were standard frozen/fried fare. Meh. Definitely attracted to this restaurant due to staying at the Hyatt Resort, but that is about it. It's an outdoor restaurant with views to the ocean, but also in close proximity to the pool. Good for people watching, just meh for overall ambiance. Also be ready to endure the sun as the shades don't seem to be adjusted potentially leaving you scorching in the sun. Yeah, and we were attached by gnats, so landing in a couple glasses of water. The service was great though. Our waitress was attentive, gave good recommendations but then was sent home and switched to another waiter, but didn't really miss a beat. Food wise, I had the impossible burger. As a vegetarian there are not a lot of options, but there was a healthy menu advertised that I was told wasn't in effect until Sunday when a 'healthy' group was arriving to the hotel. The impossible burger was pretty meh. Not sure if they decided not to season the patty at all or what. The onion rings were ok, nothing special, frozen and fried. My girlfriend had a kale salad with strawberries, apples and goat cheese, there were supposedly walnuts but they disappeared. The portion size was good and the salad was also good. For what is basically a poolside restaurant, they have delicious food. The setting is beautiful, as some tables have a view of the pool and of the ocean. They have someone making handmade pizzas, and he was very busy. The pizzas looked delicious. We had a salad, a Hawaiian pizza, and a fish entree, all of which were amazing. Pricing is a little high, but this is a five star resort with prices to match. The service was friendly, although the waitress would disappear for long stretches. The setting is typical for a hotel's patio dining. The staff was good. But the quality of food really needs CPR. How can anyone screw up a steak sandwich or a fish taco? My steak sandwich consisted of slices of roast beef mixed with some green , doused with a disgusting salad dressing in a taco style. That taco is made from naan. I advised our server about this and was told ' better luck next time'. This place is likely adequate for dipping a glass of ice tea or Mai Tai but don't expect much from the food. If you're staying at the Hyatt and choose to park yourself at the pool all day, Umalu provides a good solution for lunch. Without having to leave your precious chaise lounge chair, you can have drinks and food delivered right to you. Waiters start making rounds for orders at 11am, and it can take about 30 minutes or more to get your food, but at least you can keep on soaking up the sun and views! If you're in Maui during a high season like we were, your chairs are precious real estate and must be snagged before the sun even comes up (I'm totally serious about this, as crazy as it sounds). We spent our last day at the hotel on the beach and poolside. There were waiters that walked around to take your order. Kahlua Pork Nachos - The portion of this was surprising! It was pretty big. We assumed it would be small because most places at hotels charge you a lot but give you very little food. These were delicious and the pork was so moist. The combination of everything was very good. My husband really liked the salsa. Ahi Poke Nachos - They serve this with taro chips. The marinade on the poke was tasty and they were generous on the portion as well. The fish tasted fresh and the texture was fine. Mai Tai - This had a nice balance of alcohol and juice in it. The drink was not watered down at all so we were happy about that. Pina Colada - We have had many pina coladas in our lives but this was probably the best we have had! It was blended so smoothly and the flavors were delicious! Late Lunch after a long day We arrived late afternoon after a hectic day of travel and chaotic experience at the airport and rental car agency over Memorial Day. We finally arrived to our hotel, Hyatt in Ka'anapali. By this time we had survived on some peanuts we brought on the plane and those little British biscuit cookies provided in coach on Alaska, but were famished. The main restaurants were in between lunch and dinner so Umalu was a close and immediate choice. The view of the ocean was amazing from the upper tier of the resort, and had good shade coverage with umbrellas. We were greeted quickly and our server was prompt to bring us water and take our requests. They have a bar top nearby the tables with TVs for sporting events- (we caught part of the NBA Conference finals). The food was typical prices for Hawaii (high) and food was decent. Tater tots were average and fried green beans were pretty tasty. We also shared one of their chicken sandwiches which was really good. In a pinch this place is with a stop, but not sure I would travel to eat here if I weren't staying at the resort. read more

What a terrible experience. It should be noted upfront that this is not a restaurant but a poolside bar at the Hyatt regency. We had a 7:15 reservation and at 8:30 we still have no food. Well, we did get food...someone else's meal was accidentally dropped all over my 16 year old daughter. Her clothes were ruined. First off, do NOT trust the menu on open table. It is totally out of date and not representative of the options available. The actual menu is pure bar food. They do not have several items shown on the open table menu including steak or the ahi bowl. They do have "steak and fries", and when my daughter ordered it she was told "just so you know, it's not steak". Huh? Apparently this is a Greek pita with sliced meat of some sort along with goat cheese. Oh, and the poke nachos are "not nachos". A waiter shouldn't have to tell you that the items on the menu are not actually as described. If we weren't starving and without options we would have gone elsewhere. Our food did arrive shortly after 830. It was nothing special. I had the fish tacos and they were ordinary and clearly had been sitting in the kitchen for quite some time. The rest of my party had the chicken tacos, fish and chips, and stir fry. Everything was bland and simply not worth the wait. The salad that was supposed to come first arrived with the meal and we witnessed other tables have the same issues with their appetizers. To the managers credit, they did comp our meal due to the damage caused to the clothes. We chose this place as we were concerned about finding dinner availability with Maui being so crowded and this place had reservations available. In hindsight, had we walked up to another restaurant and had to wait an hour for a table it would have been a better experience with higher quality food and likely not the delay in being served. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere for your dinner plans. read more

We were one of only 2 couples seated at the bar and the bartender spent time cleaning, refilling ice, arranging bottles, or whatever while we just waited to be acknowledged. Well, the first thing we do is order the Poke Nachos!! They're so good! They come with Taro chips instead of tortilla chips and are delicious! They've got a couple of TVs for those wanting to watch basketball, football or whatever else you want to watch! I've watched the Super Bowl sitting there! Yup! An ahi burger and a bottle of Bikini Blonde or a Long Board to top it off! And a beautiful ocean view! What more could you want? I've always met fun people there too!
