    Spring rolls with peanut sauce
    Jarrett Y.

As with everyone else in town, we were very excited that Umami Ave finally opened! After many months of delays, the time has arrived. During our first attempt to visit, they were so busy they had run out of several items before we could order; we came back a few days later when we could make it earlier in the day. This is an Asian fusion restaurant that primarily serves Vietnamese dishes, though select sushi rolls are advertised on the weekends. The staff was very kind, but as one would expect, they are still very new. They are learning their system and cadence, and with how busy they have been, minor mistakes are slipping through. They are essentially getting a crash course in serving, so I hope everyone can extend some patience as they navigate this grand opening phase. The Food We ordered three dishes: Beef Pho, Spring Rolls, and the Banh Mi. * Spring Rolls: The starter was good and the peanut sauce was tasty. However, it felt like they could've packed a few more veggies into the rice paper, as it seemed a bit loose. I also would have preferred fewer (or no) carrots in the peanut sauce. * Banh Mi: This was also good. The pork was marinated, tender, and really flavorful. The French bread was fresh and rounded out the sandwich, though I felt there could have been more meat or veggies to improve the "bread-to-topping" ratio. It would be great to have a "double meat" upgrade option in the future. The pork was definitely the star of the dish. * Beef Pho: The broth was light yet maintained that traditional taste, and the beef was soft and tender. The small size is plenty for most people, especially if you order an appetizer. My only issue was that the dish wasn't accompanied by the usual veggie plate (bean sprouts, Thai basil, cilantro, lime, and chiles). The owner explained that their vendor hadn't delivered on time, so they had to serve without them for the time being. While disappointing, it wasn't a deal-breaker. Drinks We also ordered the Thai tea. They serve it with boba, which is a bit different, but it tasted great! Some places make the tea too sweet, but this was perfect. Final Thoughts Had this been an established place, I might have given them 4 stars, but I want to give them the benefit of the doubt and start them at 5. I truly believe that once the staff is fully trained and their supplies are consistently in stock, this could be one of the best places to eat in town. We will definitely be back!

    Grilled steak Banh Mi

(4/5) I visited the new restaurant Umami on a Monday afternoon around 1 PM with my sister and daughter. Upon entry, we were greeted right away and seated promptly. The space is small but clean and cozy, with about five tables occupied at the time, so it felt calm and relaxed. We ordered the crispy cream cheese wontons, spring rolls, grilled steak banh mi, and a Thai iced tea. The crispy cream cheese wontons came out first -- they were very fresh and absolutely delicious. I especially loved the tangy dipping sauce that paired perfectly with them. Next were the spring rolls, which ended up being my least favorite dish. The filling consisted of shrimp, lettuce, rice noodles, and cucumbers, and they were served with a peanut sauce. Even with the sauce, I felt the spring rolls lacked flavor, and the shrimp itself didn't have much taste. My sister and I shared the grilled steak banh mi, and this was definitely a highlight. The sandwich was delicious, with fresh cilantro, pickled radish, and carrots. The only small critique is that the steak could have been cut into smaller pieces for easier bites. The Thai iced tea wasn't as sweet as I usually prefer, but it was still enjoyable. Overall, the customer service was great -- our waitress checked in on us consistently and made sure we were doing well. The food was overall delicious, and the menu looks very appealing. Would I come back? Yes. Would I order the same thing? Yes -- except I'd probably skip the spring rolls next time.

    Chicken pho

The serve and ambiance were good. We also got an egg roll that I forgot to take a picture of. It was very delicious but it only had two per serving. The phos weren't as fulfilling for $15each, it needs more substance for it to feel like a full meal. More on the pricier side as everything generally is in Ave and the serving portions were rather small. I thought about giving it 3/5 but I want to support our local businesses as much as possible. I'm willing to give it a second chance with another dish sometime.

We were seated and had our drinks within a couple of minutes. The menu has a lot of choices, but we went with the long time favorite, spicy tuna roll and bento box lunches. The tuna roll was delicious and made fresh with quality ingredients. There is nothing worse than expecting fresh sushi and getting that slightly off tase. This was a good start to the bento boxes, which didn't disappoint. For starters we had the miso soup, which was better than many miso soups we've had in the past, it was very fresh and flavorful. The Mongolian beef and California roll were flavorful and the gyoza was crisp. Hubs liked the salmon and tuna roll that his bento box came with. They also offer a variety of sushi rolls, Asian grill entrees like NY steak and shrimp, or Nigiri/Sashimi which I always remind my husband not to order, since this never fills him up and he eats half of my dinner. His answer is he developed a taste when he was in Japan and it's now his favorite dish. In addition to all the tasty food, the restaurant has a relaxing atmosphere, the staff is friendly and helpful and this is a place that you look forward to visiting again.

Admittedly, service was a little slow... it felt like a one-woman show, but that's part of the charm of this small business (support local). I was considering sushi but the menu only listed specialty rolls. I was looking for something basic but I didn't see it being offered. I think it must be on a separate menu that was not provided to us, because regular sushi rolls are shown on the online menu. But being at a Thai restaurant, I decided to go with Thai. I ordered the green curry with chicken which also comes with a bowl of rice. You can customize the spice level. My green curry was as good as any - a little spicy and a little sweet. We also got the beef drunken noodles, and they were able to customize the noodle dish to be Thai extra spicy and remove unwanted ingredients for a picky eater. We also ordered the fried rice and added chicken and pineapple (which is a winning combination). The dishes had good presentation and the flavors were solid. We enjoyed our dishes. Portion sizes were fair but I wouldn't say generous. Prices were reasonable. Thai Spice Garden hit the spot - I recommend this place for Thai fare in Fort Myers.

Service was great from start to finish. Our waitress was attentive but not overbearing. She brought us champagne on the house for our anniversary which was very nice. She also helped get us a table in the bar area for after-dinner drinks even though it was packed in there. She went above and beyond. The foot was amazing! Usually I'm very underwhelmed by bao buns but these were the best ones I've had. They packed in enough flavor that the buns didn't mute everything (what usually happens). We also had the brisket fried rice which was great. I wanted the meat flavor to come through and stand out a little more from the rice but overall very good. But the miso black cod stole the show. Wow this dish was incredible. The fish absolutely melted in your mouth. I don't even know how they got that amazing texture and flavor on it. Also, awesome cocktails. Their signature cocktail was perfect for after dinner.

It arrived at my table practically frozen. After sending it back, I ordered the ginger steamed snapper, which was completely flavorless and tasted like cardboard. The only saving grace of the entire night was the service and the wine (a Txomin from the Basque Country). Save your time and money. Do not eat here.
