Sad to do this, but I've tried this place several times by now since I last raved about it (5 stars)...and it has definitely gone downhill. I say "downhill" for the following reasons. I usually order the Chicken Katsu Don (Spicy) with the Seaweed Salad...and I've noticed that they've cut back on the portion size for the Seaweed (almost half of what I used to get) at the same price of 5 bucks. Outlandish pricing! Even with the Katsu Don, I noticed that they've increased the amount of rice, but reduced the amount of Chicken (?!?). I must also mention that it irks me that they add 1 buck for "Spicy"...which is basically a drizzle of sauce over the chicken. I mean, really?!? They also upcharge for Chicken over the Pork Katsu. Before, I didn't even bother mentioning some of this because it was SO good...but not so much anymore. For my last 2-3 meals here, I was just not satisfied with the quality of Katsu (barely crispy)...plus, despite the upcharge for "Spicy", there just wasn't that much sauce to it. Overall, I felt ripped over this super-casual meal. With all the upcharges, the Chicken Katsu Don Spicy is $17, and the little bit of Seaweed Salad is $5. I usually pay less for this at fancy Japanese restaurants with higher quality Katsu....all served beautifully on a plate with utensils, not plastic cartons and plastic fork. It depresses me to see that Alley 51 doesn't seem to be as big of a hit as I initially thought it'd be. In fact, half of the food vendors were closed on the weekday I was there. Frankly, I think the downfall has to do with the ridiculous pricing of foods (and drinks). Think the vendors are forgetting that this is a fast-food experience...not fine dining. Why are the diners having to pay restaurant pricing? Sorry, but I just don't feel that I'm getting a fair deal here. With the quality and the quantity of the foods having gone down, while the pricing stayed up, it's no longer a 5-star meal for me. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by this place! It's kind of unassuming and right at the front so you almost want to walk past it. But once you step up and look at the menu, you realize this place isn't playing around! Their menu is large and has so many really great options. We opted for the tempura veggies and a sushi roll from the cooler. Both we delicious! The tempura was really flavorful, fresh and hot!! I definitely want to check out more of their menu now, there's just so much to choose from. I'm up for that challenge though lol. Really great spot!! read more

I love the Sizzling Pot concept like Pepper Lunch but this place was so disappointing. For the price I believe it's not worth especially for the amount of meat you get onto it. I got one beef and rice plate and obviously the amount of meat given was sad. I also got the chicken plate with fries ( I don't know why I thought they would give it to me on the side NOT on the hot plate but that's my fault). Ya don't get the chicken plate. The chicken is dry and should not belong on a hot plate this way. The plate makes the chicken even drier and also burns the fries. The sauces didn't help how bad it was. read more

Happened to stumble upon this place when I was shopping at Super G international mart. We ordered chicken on a stick and it was gross- completely dry and flavorless Gyu Don was almost entirely rice with very little meat. The sauce was good. Overall, not worth the price. read more

As you enter the building, Sizzling is the first food stall you'll encounter, and you can take a seat at the counter after ordering. The highlight here is the interactive dining experience. The food is served on a sizzling hot cast iron plate, which keeps everything piping hot throughout your meal. Every plate comes with a choice of miso soup or cream corn soup and either a cucumber salad or potato salad. For your entree there is a variety of meats you can choose from: beef, shrimp, chicken, or salmon. You can even opt for a combo if you're feeling adventurous. For my meal, I chose a combo of beef and shrimp. The plate comes with garlic butter, rice, scallions, and corn. You can decide if you want the garlic butter spicy; I chose the non-spicy version. There are plenty of add-ons available too, such as chili oil, spicy mayo, eel sauce, meat sauce, onion chips, cheese, kimchi, more corn, or a sunny side up egg. I chose a sunny side up egg as my add-on. Once the sizzling cast iron plate arrives, the fun begins. You mix everything up to continue cooking the egg and meats to your desired doneness. The rice gets wonderfully crispy, adding a fantastic texture to each bite. After mixing, you pour on your choice of sauce--either garlic gravy or sweet black pepper sauce. I went with the sweet black pepper sauce, which added a delightful punch of flavor. The cucumber salad and miso soup were as expected--good and standard fare that you'd typically find at a Japanese restaurant. Having coming from Chicago, I have been spoiled with great gyudon. I was so disappointed with what I got here. The beef was dry and didn't have a good mix with fat. There was absolutely no flavor or sauce. The bowl was 3/4 of rice and 1/4 meat. I went up to the counter after my first bite to ask if this was how it was supposed to be and the employee said he could give me some random on bottle sauces. Save your money. The frozen packs that you get at G mart for $7 taste 10x better than this one for $16. read more

My friends and I each tried a few different things on the menu. For starters, I had a few different types of sushi. I was expecting it to be old tasting as it was in a refrigerator but NOPE! It's super fresh.The salmon belly melted in my mouth. The tuna was the perfect texture as well. My friend let me try their tonkatsu curry and it was rich and super crispy. Same with the potstickers though I would have loved more texture and a better sauce. Overall, it was amazing how they were able to have such a diverse menu and keep up with the quality. I plan to try all restaurants at Alley 51. My experience at Yume & Sizzling was awesome. I ordered so much and was stuffed. I onigri first while I waited on my food. It was yummy. I wish it had more shrimp or even have some eel sauce. I ordered the sizzling plate. I got the chicken and housemade beef steak. I go it with the Tonkatsu sauce on the side (I got extra). I got a side of kimchi, cucumber salad and salmon soup. Everything was good. Didn't care for the mixed veggies though... just like the broccoli. I enjoyed it all. YUME & Sizzling is located in Alley 51 International Food Hall at Super G Mart Pineville. They serve Japanese food, and on this trip I tried their Katsu Don Pork Cutlet, which I found to be quite good and reminded me of one of my favorite dishes in Japan. Service was very quick...I probably waited 5 minutes from the time I placed my order on their screen. While waiting I saw a couple orders of ramen that looked quite good...in particular the onsen egg yolk appeared to have that jammy consistency of a properly executed onsen egg. The outside of the store front is decorated to appear like the street view of a Japanese restaurant...exactly what you would expect in the scheme of this large street food hall. Offerings were great comparatively, although portions are on the small side. Sushi is a for a takeout option. Was excited to try their new Sizzling counter and even more excited about their onigiri because that's something you don't see everyday. But $9 for one rice ball? I like the kiosk they have for placing an order. It takes the pressure off having to be fast. You can take your time to look through the menu, see pictures, and decide what you want. The Gyu Don and Pepper Rice dishes are great! They are also quick with getting the food ready. read more
