I had my hair done the other day by Elle Rivas. I drove from San Francisco to San Jose just to see her. I first had Elle do my hair while she was a student in cosmetology school still, and let me tell you she's been doing flawless hair since the day she started school. Even then, I would tell her when you graduate I will surely follow you. And that I did. I am Latina and have naturally very dark thick hair that I could never seem to get lightened correctly. I have had multiple People over process my hair, or tell me I can achieve the color I want. Basically I went to have my hair done and it turned out orange yellow, and not what I wanted. I came to Elle sort of a mess and she transformed me Into the little blonde bombshell I always wanted to be. Without compromising the integrity of my hair. To watch her work is pretty amazing for being so young she has the most confident hands and really know what's she's doing. She's like this magical little hair goddess who turns everything to fairy dust when she touches it. I will never let anyone else touch my hair, and i will gladly drive to San Jose from SF to see her. The salon itself is awesome, very open, well organized and set up. All the stylist are well presented and confident and sweet. On an impulse I made an appt the day before. I was lucky to have gotten an appt with Roz! It was the only appt left online and so i chose it. Fyi, that was how I picked which Stylist to go with. Figured the one with the least available appt meant she was good? I was totally spot on with this! My whole 1st experience at Umbrella was amazing! Roz was phenomenal and her assistant, Ashleigh, was wonderful! Ashleigh gave me a great scalp massage as she washed my hair and she is so sweet! Roz was the one that really made the experience great. I had long hair that was cut straight so no layers. Its easy and very low maintenance which was what I needed the last couple of years. Of course, now I am bored of it and needed a change but not sure what. Asked Roz for her opinion and showed her a few pictures and she knew exactly what to do! We ended up cutting off a good 6-7 inches off and she showed me how to do a messy long bob! I love it and so far I have received tons of compliments! I called Umbrella Salon today to see if I could book an appointment with Elle. Apparently from yelp reviews she is one of the best at this salon. I was lucky enough to get an appointment because someone cancelled. I needed my hair done by today for my baby shower. When she greeted me I felt this friendly, comfortable feeling right away. She even asked me if I liked anything to drink. I started by explaining to her my hair situation and how my hair had turn so orange and that I wanted to go lighter. I showed her a picture of what I wanted. She said it would not be possible to do this in one session. But she did tell me what she could do. I like how she explain step by step to me and reassured me every time "Don't worry this is not the final look." When she was almost done I explained I wanted the top a little lighter to make it blend and she went ahead and fixed it right away. Initially my hair was suppose to take 4 hours, but it ended up taking 8. If u think for a second she will let u walk out unhappy, then your wrong. She is so passionate about hair and her work. Tl;dr: I highly recommended this place. Also Jennifer is fucking amazing. Long story incoming: My hair has always been a subject of attention. I have naturally reddish hair, and my entire life I've gotten attention about it. Most of it was from older women who told me to NEVER do anything to my hair and to keep it exactly as it is. Don't get me wrong. I love my natural hair color. But I wanted more color. I've been wanting more color for a few years now, but only finally built up the courage to start seriously researching it this past year. I love pastels, especially turquoise and pink, but I wanted to keep my natural color too. With my vision finally set, I made a consultation appointment with a very well rated salon in my hometown that had rave reviews about their color jobs (not San Jose). Now, I'm generally an anxious person, and I had SO MUCH anxiety about adding color to my hair because everyone told me to never do it. But I really wanted something fun! That said, I was really nervous when I went in for my initial consultation for a color job on my "virgin" hair (again, this was at a different salon). I came in with lots of photos and explained to the stylist what I wanted. She then convinced me that blue would not look good in my hair and that I should just do the pink. I was disappointed, but I agreed because I trusted her opinion more than my very inexperienced one. We made the appointment for the coloring and I left, with the intention of returning in one week. 30 minutes after the consultation, I got a phone call from the salon. The stylist said she changed her mind and that pink would actually also look bad, so we should do purple. At this point I was devastated. She took away both colors I wanted and now we were going to do one I didn't even suggest. I thought something was wrong with my hair, and that all the old ladies who told me to never do anything to my hair were right. So I cancelled the appointment. Fast forward a few months. I moved up to the South Bay Area and told some new friends about this experience I had. They were all shocked, and encouraged me to try just one more salon before giving up all hope. So I went to yelp, saw Umbrella's ratings, and started to stalk their stylists' instagrams, longing for the pretty, colored hair they could do. I stumbled upon Jennifer's IG and one of her posts was a gorgeous image of her sister with rainbow colors in her hair. I figured this was my best shot at getting what I wanted. "If she can do 8 colors, 2 should be no problem." I still had doubts about my specific hair though. Maybe it was the one kind of hair in the world that just can't be dyed, like the old ladies always told me. I was really nervous leading up to my initial consult with Jennifer. I parked in a SJ lot across the street (Umbrella can give you two hours of parking credit, make sure to ask!) and walked in. I was greeted by two women at the front desk who offered me water, sparkling or still. I was then greeted by one of Jennifer's assistants. I believe his name was Tommy (? I'm so sorry I forgot. He was awesome and this makes me feel bad.) He was super upbeat and helped calm a lot of my nerves about this whole ordeal. I then met Jennifer, and I told her my whole story about the old salon. She listened to the whole thing, apologized for all of this crap I had to deal with before and genuinely made me feel much better about my situation. I then told her what I wanted, she asked a few clarifying questions, and then she said that it would be no problem to do and that she thought it would look awesome. She then did a quick test on my skin near my ear with some color to make sure I wouldn't have an allergic reaction. I can't believe the other "highly rated" salon I went to before this didn't even do this. Everything seemed fine (no reaction). Phew! I was so relieved at this point. I finally could get the hair I wanted! We made an appointment for the next week. She told me to bring snacks and something to read as it might take a while. I appreciated the heads up. Finally the day arrived. I came with a snack and a fully charged phone, and they went to work. They first lightened the bottom of my hair. This took most of the time, as I have long, thick hair, and it had to sit for a bit. The whole lightening process was amusing to me. I had so much Saran Wrap in my hair! I was worried that I'd freak out when I saw it lightened, but it just made me more excited. Then the colors came out. They were gorgeous colors that were carefully painted onto my lightened hair. I'm close to the character limit, so I'll end with this: I got exactly what I wanted. I'm so happy to be rocking this hair style and cannot believe I've gone through 25 years without it. Screw you, old ladies who told me to never change my hair! And thank you Umbrella and Jennifer. I get compliments on the daily and feel so happy whenever I look at my hair! I showed her a picture of what I wanted- a bob that's not too short with flowy layers and lots of volume- and she gave me exactly that! I've always only had one hairstylist for over 5 years, but when he changed career paths I was nervous because I didn't have a clue who would cut my hair. My friend recommended "Umbrella Salon" specifically Jan-Michael. Let me preface this with saying one of the most dreaded questions I hate to answer are similar to "what number are your cuts?" and "what style of hair would you like cut?"; but Jan-Michael was very patience as I responded to all my questions with "I have no clue". CLEANLINESS (5/5): The salon area is quite large, and there have been times when the salon is packed - each time, the salon is very clean. From the front door to the chair stations to the washing stations. Understandably, while hair is being cut it sheds all over the place. I do not like it when there is hair all over the place. Jan-Michael keeps the station clean while he's cutting my hair. CONNECTION (5/5): I'm not much of a talker in general so there are times when there isn't a conversation between Jan-Michael and me. But, the times when we do talk, it's very pleasant and comfortable. In fact, I overhear other clients and stylists talking and everyone seems to be friends and wanting to know one another - a very pleasant and friendly environment! It's not sterile like a hospital and not full of awkward silence. PRODUCT/SERVICE QUALITY (5/5): Jan-Michael has cut and styled my hair for over a year. I trust my hair with his cuts 100%. I also like that products aren't pushed on me like their salespeople. I used a mix of products so my hair was sometimes all over the place. So far its a nice looking place...kind of annoyed that I came early, and the lady who came in 10 mins AFTER me was in a chair first. No bueno with that. It doesnt really seem like they have anyone coming for me soon too--I just expect if I'm early, they should probably do the same. Yesterday I got a haircut from Jan-Michael, and it was great. For the past few years, my hair cut has been pretty messed up (because of going to cheaper salons as a student). I whole-heartily agree that Yanin is beyond worth making this my very 1st Yelp Review. With that being said, Yanin and her awesome assistant are simply the best. Why you may ask? Oh let me be the one to tell you all the ways. 1)Yanin and her assistant are the right mix of professional and personable. If you're like me - you hate the awkward silence as the stylist cuts your hair or you could do without the awkward filler conversation. Right off the bat, they both made me feel comfortable and we were chatting like old friends. I had explained to them that I wanted to get my haircut because I was flying out to New York that night and wanted to feel fabulous for my trip! I was not disappointed with the end result. 2) Boy does Yanin know her hair history! I have thick hair and when I say thick, I mean really thick that if you cut it short, I end up looking like Toad from Mario Brothers. I did mention my hair was thick right? Well... Yanin was awesome enough to understand that I wanted a shorter cut - we went for a long bob and she educated me on how my hair type works and what I could do to style and maintain the cut. Color me impressed because I had never had a stylist educate me before. 3) Let's talk about how they wash your hair before your cut! I've had my hair washed before at other salons but Yanin's assistant was fantastic! She really did a great job and on top of that she was so incredibly sweet! I've been coming back to Umbrella for awhile because I've had too many painful haircut experiences elsewhere. No matter who cuts your hair here, you're bound to be happy with the results. Today, I booked an appointment with Vanessa and she was great. She listened to what I wanted and offered suggestions on how to make my thick, long, heavy hair feel light again. I ended up chopping off about 5 inches and added some layers so my hair wouldn't be weighed down as much. My hair definitely feel a lot lighter now. I still only cut my hair about once a year but the haircut usually grows out great without needing any touch up. I got my first appointment today with Lisa. I called around noon and luckily she got an opening at 2pm. (I was suggested other stylists but their appointments time didn't work well with my schedule, and since I've heard such good things about Lisa on here, why not?). My perfect hair stylist checklist: -Younger, stylish (check) -Friendly, courteous (check) -Asks and listens to my concerns/wishes (check check check) -Make conversation so the appointment is not awkwardly silent but not too talkative or nosy (check check check) (I don't like it when the person gets too personal the very first time) -Great head massage (Check) -GREAT WORK!!!! (check) -Does as I wish (check) (I did not want my hair styled at the end of the appointment, she was a bit disappointed b/c she loves styling but respected my wish anyway) Overall it was a great experience. She was very careful with your hair, double-checkiing her work (maybe even triple-check), and was very good in remembering what you asked for. The salon was very modern, clean, and nicely decorated. The receptionists there are very friendly and nice too. Umbrella Salon is amazing! All of the staff were nice and friendly. I walked in and was greeted and assisted immediately. My hair stylist Elle Rivas brought me over to her station and asked if I wanted water or tea; I thought this was super sweet. Then I started telling her about my hair situation and what I wanted. I've had red (box dye) hair for over a year and a half and now i want to chafe it up a bit by going ashy blond. At first she hesitated and said no I don't think we can do it because I don't think your hair can handle it. The moment she said this was the moment I knew I could trust her fully because she sees what's best for me. I talked to her for a bit and told her I trusted her and she finally said okay. My first session with her she had to strip out all of the red and slowly work towards the blond. This was not an easy task for her nor was it easy for me to sit in the chair as it took a long time. (But it was worth it) My next session she turned it into a balayage so we can slowly work towards the blond. A few sessions later and voila, she is truly a hair goddess. My hair is a nice subtle ashy blond. NO BRASSINESS. Getting to a professional blond from red box dye is truly difficult, from my experience, but Elle Rivas is an amazing hair stylist and she did a fantastic job! Five stars for Roz! I came here a week before my birthday and before school went out for the summer to lighten my hair, and it came out EXACTLY how I wanted it to. I've been struggling with dry, damaged brittled hair some time now. I had just about accepted that this was how my hair was going to be from now on, until I met Bill about 2 years ago. My husband and I came to the salon since we saw good reviews on yelp. Having just moved from Japan, we wanted to find a good place to get our hair done. I am really glad we chose to come to Umbrella hair salon. We both had the stylist Jade. He was very knowledgeable, was really interested to see what we wanted, and took great care of us. His assistant was also very personable and super attentive. Since our visit at the salon spanned over two appointments we were there for quite a while. They offered us chairs next to each other in the salon while we were waiting for the other's hair to get cut. We were also offered drinks and were talked to as if we were new friends. What a warm welcome! I am really pleased with the cut. The quality and style exceeded my expectations. The shampoo, massage, and styling were also top-notch. Katrina is the BEST! Before my most recent visit to Katrina I hated my hair. I tried different lengths and different styles but could never find something I liked and so I settled on a haircut that I didn't like just because it was the one that made me feel the most comfortable. Then I went to see Katrina and I can honestly say my visit with her has changed my life! We dyed my hair blonde and she was just the most helpful, most skilled, most insightful person ever. It was a super fun experience. She's incredibly easy to talk to and is the best person to be with if you're stuck in a chair for a few hours. On top of that, my hair looks GREAT! I can't believe it took me so long to come here! I've passed by Umbrella numerous times but it wasn't until this week that I made an appointment. Parking: I took the advice of other Yelpers and parked across the street in the Market/San Pedro garage. I was in and out in just under 2 hours which is the amount of time they validate for. First Impression: Receptionists were friendly but I was a bit bummed they didn't offer any beverages (could be that there were a few others coming in at the same time). The salon is large and spacious with plenty of seating in the waiting area. Service: I opted for Anna merely because she had a last minute opening at the time I could make it. She assessed my hair and found some uneven layers in the back (which no other stylist had pointed out to me?!) Upfront she told me that we wouldn't be able to fix the mismatching layers in one session but that she could even them out. I appreciated her honesty and the fact that she pointed this out to me. I had also opted for a keratin treatment which I thought would help my dry scalp but she stated it would not (woops); instead she suggested an Oribe conditioner that would help, and it did! I felt very taken care of the entire time and I'm so happy with the cut she gave me - it's light, bouncy, and exactly what I wanted. Umbrella Salon is the hippest place to get your hair did. They give the best head and neck massages during your shampoo and if you go there enough they'll come to your birthday party and bring you bottles of expensive tequila. Umbrella also throws a fantastic (open bar) high-style holiday party for their clients, which is awesome. They also always make you feel like you are super hot and they give you hugs. I have been getting my hair cut with Khoi for 8 years now! He does an excellent job cutting long thick Asian hair. I typically have long bangs with soft layers around the face. Khoi is able to cut my hair based on inspiration pics I bring in or recommend a new cut if I'm feeling bored with my look. I'm a loyal customer and recommend him to friends. read more

This is "WOOHOO! AS GOOD AS IT GETS!, but I must say as qualification that in MY perfect world such high-quality services would be slightly less costly. After having consultations with several other salons in the area, I made an appointment here with Karla because: 1) She immediately offered a detailed consultation when I walked in the door 2) She had nice hair herself 3)She was polite and open, yet offered constructive criticism to my wacky color ideas 4) The other stylists were young and I trusted Umbrella's hair styling aesthetics based on their range of style I got "Baliage" which is individual hair painting using various colors to effect a more uniform lightening effect than highlights, but with the variation of more edgy styles. This was on Karla's wise reccommendation and she followed by a toner to take out my natural reddish tones, as originally I had wanted ashy blonde hair (and I am an olive skinned mixed girl with dark hair.) Since my hair was in good condition-- almost virgin (not dyed or processed, the baliage allegedly protected the integrity of the hair, instead of all over bleach highlighting followed by toner, which would have damaged it. I also got a full cut and bang trim. All in all my hair looks pretty awesome, and also was better than I expected, as I had all these ideas circling, previous to Karla's masterful execution, but had little idea how they would really look on me or the best way to accomplish them. I came out with an excellent cut, long side bangs and a flattering light light brown color, which is varied and darker at the ends because of the detailed baliage process. I enjoyed my experience with my new superstar Karla at Umbrella. Also, Karla gave me a banging neck and head massage during the shampoo, amaaaazing. I'll be back in 5 weeks for touch ups. read more

What can i say?!? Umbrella still owns my loyalty and trust when it comes to my hair!!! I booked an appointment with Lisa for cut and color. I've known Lisa since she started off as an assistant when I used to get my haircuts from Jen. And back then i knew that she's got magical powers with hair... I can just so tell! 2 years ago, she styled my hair for my birthday party! She gave me the most luscious waves that were just so va-va-voomish! Think Victoria's Secret runway waves. and I was right! But this time, her true talent just shined when she gave me the best layers i've ever had done on my hair. I was really specific with how i wanted my long mane to be. I wanted to keep my hair long enough so i can still curl it, and i wanted something that can slim my round face down. Those were my conditions and im so glad that Lisa met them. My hair felt so much lighter and looked a lot more healthier! It was also my first time to color my hair completely. Lisa did such a great job with the color. Once again, my specifics were...i didn't want anything too loud, and not a color that's gonna wash out my skin tone, something that will blend well with clothes, and definitely not the typical asian hair that has thick blonde streaks. So she explained to me how she was just going to go a shade lighter, with sort of caramel highlights and YES!! as the final look, it was exactly as she described it (look at my primary photo)... very classy, sassy. something that i can easily pull off on the runway or a photoshoot, and designers whom i work with will actually not trip about it. I left the salon feeling great about myself, my look and my hair!!! I will definitely book my next appt to Lisa. So Lisa, if you're reading this, Thank you sooo much!!!!! The money i spent was worth every penny!! *The move to this bigger space was such a wise idea. The salon felt very airy with an urban feel! I love the black chandelier in the waiting area. I had my hair done by Aubrea yesterday. This was my first time at umbrella salon and I had a pleasant experience. I was looking for a new salon to try and I remember passing by umbrella salon. Getting started is easy. You can book and appointment online, through the phone or at the desk. I booked online and their response was prompt. Prices can be found on their website. Aubrea was very pleasant to talk to and there was never a moment of awkwardness. She didn't try to sell me anything I didn't want, she was not pushy at all and she did not add any services I didn't want. She was really nice to me and I am happy with the haircut that I wanted. Overall umbrella salon is a cute, trendy and modern salon. The atmosphere was very welcoming and I would definitely recommend this place. read more

Update Following CFS 2010--- I had the pleasure of working with about 20 of the stylists from Umbrella -- and they did a seriously amazing job doing runway hair for my show. They are easily one of the most professional and talented hair teams I've seen or worked with in a long long time. Id trust each and every one of them in the salon. In fact, I trusted them without about 55 models (of varying hair length and type), and each came out phenomenal. If you can do runway hair, in a frantic environment, and pull off that many models and touch-ups in that short of a time... well, salon work should be easy. Want the best? I got my hair done by Elle and she's amazing at what she does! This was my first time at Umbrella Salon and I was very impressed. I came in wanting an a-line cut and that's exactly what I got. My hair was an outgrown bob from May and I told Elle I wanted to go short one more time before I grow it out again. She was a sweetheart by making sure what I wanted before she touched my hair. I do love Umbrella Salon, but this review is mostly for Vanessa, my stylist extraordinaire! I found her about 6 months ago and have truly enjoyed each time I've gotten my hair cut with her. She's friendly, knowledgeable, and very talented! I have thick, wavy-curly, frizz-tastic hair and somehow she transforms it into a flattering, shaped, smooth style that lasts. She even spends extra time to show me tips and tricks to keep the style looking great as long as possible! On my last visit in December, she did a fantastic consultation and helped me decide on a demipermanent tint which I LOVED, very subtle, but so fun! Saw her again yesterday and showed her a photo of the next step in color that I wanted, and she absolutely delivered! I can't say enough about her, so just know if you book with Vanessa, you'll be in great hands! The salon itself is super modern, and everyone in there is very stylish. I do feel like it's a good idea to 'dress up' a little for your appointment, since you'll be staring at yourself in the mirror for a while, and inevitably comparing yourself to everyone else. That being said, receptionists are warm and welcoming, seating is comfortable, and product offered is available without being pushed on you. I would recommend Umbrella to anyone! read more

So I've been to Umbrella twice now. The first time, I saw Jade, and while the cut wasn't bad in a technical sense, it wasn't my style and I left a little disappointed. I was a little hesitant about going back, but it's in a good location for me and people seem to like & recommend it on here frequently, so I figured I'd give them another chance, and boy am I glad I did. This time, I saw Samantha and I'll be damned if she didn't do what I feel is one of the best haircuts I've ever had. I went in with a general style in mind; something dramatically different from what I was used to. She analyzed the shape of my face and the style to make sure it would work on me, clarified the length and everything, then went ahead with the cut. Not only did Samantha take her time and not rush the cut at all, but I was EXTREMELY impressed that she did also the whole thing by hand. The cut turned out fantastic and I've received nothing but compliments on it since. I immediately booked another appointment with her to come back and keep it looking neat and clean in a few weeks and am extremely happy with my experience! I honestly can't recommend Samantha enough.
