Garlic edamame: best I've had. I usually order thru postmates and have a few alterations. I have yet to have a mistake. They always get it right. Incredibly horrific service. There's a female cashier that has consistently done subpar customer service And this was the last straw for us... We ordered on Postmates and she canceled our order entirely. When I called to verify she said I placed my order at 7:46, and that the kitchen closes at 7:45... I was appalled that she had the nerve to do that. During the pandemic, we've ordered so much from this place (in the thousands) to support local businesses. I ordered on Postmates because they never answer their phone. She was incredibly rude and unapologetic for canceling my order. Wow, I am impressed! It is always a pleasant experience when everything- food, service, cleanliness, etc.- exceed your expectation. This is a fairly new restaurant which opened few months ago this year, but in fact, it is their re-open for them after few years. The food is so fresh. We had the bento which came with tempura, salad, soup, teriyaki, rolls and sets of sushi. Everything was very good, fresh, and tasty except the miso soup was for me was too salty. They have a good variety on the menu. The staffs are all so friendly and very attentive that adds up to a pleasant dining experience. A big plus is that you can get a GOOD BOBA drink here with your sushi/roll/teriyaki/bowl/appetizers. I LOVE IT!! Oh, another plus point is that the restroom is so clean and spacious, too. We recently ordered from Umebana for take-out. My coworkers that live in the area were bummed the former Maki Yaki restaurant closed at this location but were happy that another Japanese restaurant opened in its place. They seemed to think there were a lot of similarities in the menus of both restaurants. I only ordered appetizers so this review is based on the 2 I had. I went with gyoza ($4.50) and you get 6 pieces. Pretty standard gyoza but it was perfectly fried. Just the way I like it. The dipping sauce is similar to other places. It was tasty... Seems to be a combination of rice vinegar, soy sauce, garlic and other ingredients.The gyoza was good and it was value for the money for sure. The other app that I got was the chicken karaage ($7.95) and this was also a tasty appetizer. It was a good portion for an appetizer but at its price maybe several more pieces would have been ideal for me. The chicken itself was moist and juicy. Great flavor. The batter was a little on the semi-thicker side and the sweet chili dipping sauce it came with had a good kick to it. It was a good appetizer. I enjoyed it. Overall, I enjoyed the things I ordered. I really like this place. So glad it re opened from a couple years ago when it was Maki Yaki. It's not a fancy place, so it's affordable, but don't expect the sushi to be super high quality. I mainly come here for the hot food, and it's awesome. Chicken teriyaki bowl and shrimp tempura. Service is good, no complaints. I'm so excited that the Old Maki Yaki is back! I got the Combo # 1 and it's exactly like I remembered it! The deal used to be a steal at under $5, but now it's $6.95. For what you get, though, it's still the best deal in town! I've searched and searched for a place that has a similar combo containing salad, an egg roll, 2 gyozas and chicken teriyaki but now I can stop looking! This restaurant has excellent food, I recommend it highly, but please don't use GRUBHUB they jack up the cost of the order to almost twice what the restaurant charges by adding service fees, large tips, their benefit package, taxes etc. if you make a mistake on the keyboard by clicking an item twice GRUBHUB will not change it ( not to their benefit) I think the restaurants should local young delivery people for tips so this gets four stars for the food read more

tried this place a little while ago pre-COVID and had takeout recently and really enjoyed it both times! ordered the bento boxes both times and you definitely get your money's worth for the amount of food that comes with each order! I felt like the sauce on the teriyaki chicken was a little too salty and the chicken katsu sauce was also a little too sweet and salty. everything else was really good and the tempura is great! miso soup was still really hot by the time I ate it too! I also tried the crunch hand roll this time and enjoyed that! between the handroll and the bento box, I actually still have leftovers! parking lot is on the smaller side, but doable. place looked really clean and the staff was friendly! fyi I think menu items are a couple dollars more if you order via grubhub so call in your order! read more

Absolutely loved the cut rolls we got, the rice in particular was super fluffy and melts in your mouth. For the price, I expected much smaller portions but was pleasantly surprised. Yoday, I went to this Japanese restaurant to try it out for the first time. After reviewing the menu, there are so many items to choose from and reasonably priced. I ordered the Gyoza and shrimp tampura appetizers, the Bento Box #44, chicken teriyaki with shrimp tempura & 4 California rolls, came with miso soup, rice and a salad. This was so delicious, it was really good. When I came back to my office near by, my co worker ordered from them too, it was her first time eating here too.. and she even said it was delicious, she ordered the bento box #50. Ordered from Umebana for the first time today. I'm impressed by the price value of my dinner! Teriyaki chicken has a good grilled flavor to it! Fried chicken is crispy and tender. Assorted tempura is crunchy and decent. I used to order from Bento ya for Japanese comfort food. I was sad when it's closed, and now I found a replacement that's even better! Was driving on Huntington Drive and since it was lunch time saw this place and decided to give it a try. The inside is very roomy with a good number of tables to eat in. I sat and the lady brought me a menu and took my drink order. I went with the beef teriyaki and mixed tempura bento box. The beef is the thin sliced type with a nice sweet teriyaki sauce. The tempura was 1 shrimp and some vegetables, glad no broccoli. I like broccoli but not as tempura. It was nice and crispy. There were 4 pieces of California roll, rice, and a salad. I ate all of it. For a place where you need to order food at the counter before you sit, the interior of the restaurant is fairly nice. The woman taking the order was very friendly as well. Prices are pretty good too so was looking forward to eating here. Unfortunately the spicy tuna bowl I ordered was not good at all. The rice tasted cold, old, stale and there was way too much lettuce all over the bowl. It was hard to eat, not much to eat and unfortunately not satisfying at all. I probably just skimmed the spicy tuna on the avocado and just ate that together. Friend who ordered the chirashi said the same thing about her rice. Also ordered the hamachi roll which had 8 pieces.. tasted alright, even though I was a little unsure about the color of the hamachi but again the rice was stale. The menu provided a good amount of options from bento boxes to rolls!!! Service was quick and fast!!! I got the bento box that came with karaage chicken tempura rice salad and miso soup! The miso soup was really good and enjoyed it didn't taste bland like other places! The karaage chicken was fried and seasoned well and was really delicious! Tempura was also well fried not burnt and the tempura veggies were on point the veggies themselves were nice and soft while the outside was crispy creating a perfect texture to munch on. The portions of these bento boxes are great there give so much food that it's worth the $14 dollars! Additionally got milk tea without boba and was refreshing!!! gotten both take out and eaten in house here both are good options, but i have to say, the service here is very, very nice! I ate here with my baby niece and when she dropped her pacifier while we were ordering, the owner (maybe?) offered to clean the pacifier for us :) The food! Its very good! I've tried the lunch bento boxes and hand rolls and salads here and they are all excellent. I like that they have more lunch options than just beef or chicken teriyaki for the bento. They have spicy pork, fried tofu, and some fish as well. We ordered a teriyaki 'bowl' for one of the kids thinking it would be smaller than the bento box, but it was huge! Plenty of leftovers for the kids. I also like the tempura here better than most places. The batter seems thinner, crispy-er and the veggies are cut better. All the sushi we ate here tasted very good and fresh. The sushi rice wasn't sticky or gummy like some other Japanese restaurants in the area. Also they give you the option to have brown rice if you'd like. And i like the canned green tea they have here. The salads are also really good. The entree salads have nice options for toppings like spicy tuna or barbecued chicken, and the mixed greens are not just iceberg lettuce and purple cabbage like other cheap Japanese restaurants. only thing i would not reccomend is ordering the tofu for a to go order. because it is fried and has teriyaki sauce, it gets soggy very fast. Delish. I haven't fully explored the Umebana menu yet, however, I can say I've had a teriyaki Bowl delivered, and it was spectacular. Twice now, We've walked in to picked up a to-go teriyaki bento box, and both times been pleasantly surprised. It's nice to have another cool place to grab some decent comfort food here in Duarte, other than Las Palmas Mexican, which I absolutely love as well (the family rocks). The cool thing is that both places are only a few doors away from each other in the Grocery Outlet shopping center at Huntington and Buena Vista. So you can change it up. As far as I'm concerned Umebana and Las Palmas are the two most consistent and satisfying casual restaurants in Duarte. I am happy there is another close Japanese restaurant in the area. The first week they opened back up they were a bit overwhelmed. The food is very fresh, and there are more staff to attend to your table. My test for sushi is the spicy tuna hand roll. They serve it finely chopped, not my favorite however the addition of the piece of avocado took it up a level. I also try the Unagi nigiri sushi, it was done perfectly. Since then I have had the Tempura Udon and one of the bento lunch specials. So glad they are open again under a new name, but no lack of quality and customer service! See you soon. read more
