So me and my friend came in and got a not so inviting server. Didn't catch her name since she couldn't greet herself but she had hoops on with an eye on her left elbow. The manager was really nice and brought my food out to me with a genuine smile so maybe the server was having an off day. I payed 8.95 for seaweed salad that came in a small portion bowl and the food it's self was either dry or too salty. Umi's has been open for a few years now and has bettered their service and food with time. Umi's is definitely one of my go to spots in Modesto, CA. The owner: Ms Kim is dope and remembers all her guest. She's super nice and hooks it up from time to time. The restaurant: Very clean looking and located across the street from walking greens and Marie calender. Great for small parties. On this day we had a group of 8 which was great. When we had 20 it wasn't as fun (just like any other dinner people are so far away from each other, feels like there not even there. I definitely recommend smaller parties of 6 to 10 Max. The food/drinks: First off they have $0.99 Sake Bombs All Day Er Day! Secondly they have a 50% off rolls menu good for MON-THUR. The Hamachi Kama (fish collar - yellowtail) is great here. The sashimi salad is always on point here. Although, yesterday they layered everything instead of mixing it all up... new chef new style? Recommend rolls- Umi special, cherry blossom, and the lazania(I think that's how they spell it, baked roll). Buffet Man sez: YEEEEAAHH Baby! This place has got it going on! Did not try any rolls this time around, but their bento boxes are solid in terms of quality and quantity. They've only been open about a week or so. After I finished my combo bento, I finished the wife and daughters, too. So it was a "buffet man" experience to me. You must try the tempura ice cream dessert, too. NIIICE. They are going to give Sushi Garden a run for the money... especially since they are just across the street. I came here for dinner and was surprised by how fresh the sushi was. I ordered the Super White tuna, a fish that isn't readily offered elsewhere. It was a buttery fish and very yummy. Their sake nigiri was super fresh and left me craving for more! Our table also ordered a couple sushi rolls, among them the Sushi Boy and the Dragon roll. It was quite satisfying and made me wish I had a bigger stomach so I could try more rolls. Their selection of rolls is seemed endless. I was impressed with their creativity. I am definitely coming back to try all the other options on the menu. So far, it doesn't disappoint. Everything our table ordered was fresh and tasty. I also have to comment on the decor. The restaurant looks amazing, a modern Asian theme. I talked to the owners of the restaurant, an older couple in their late 50s to early 60s. The wife told me that she spent months putting the restaurant together with her own hands. I was shocked at first due to her age and short build but as I watched her work the restaurant from the dinning area, I could see that she would be able to pull it off. She has lots of energy and seems very passionate about her restaurant and serving its patrons. The effort her husband and her put into the restaurant really shows. Just knowing that her and her husband was involved in the process of constructing and designing the place makes me appreciate the place a little more. They've got style! read more

I'm giving them three stars because the food is always good. I have been here a handful of times over the last year and the experience is always great. The service is good and the food is good however, after today, I don't think I will be coming back. I came with a friend and our kids. We ordered our food and our two bento boxes came mixed up. For example, I ordered Katsu and California roll and my friend ordered teriyaki and Gyoza. My Katsu plate came with Gyoza and her teriyaki came with California rolls, not a big deal. It can easily be fixed but instead of them taking it back and fixing it they brought us extra plates so that we could fix it ourselves. That wasn't the breaking point. I was willing to look past that. My friend had a toddler that needed to use the restroom so she went there and said that the bathroom was absolutely disgusting. She didn't even want her toddler to wash his hands, she just gave him hand sanitizer instead, so he wouldn't touch anything. That makes me wonder if the bathroom is that nasty what does the kitchen look like? We went ahead and ate our food anyway since we had already ordered. Then we got our bill. I noticed that on the ticket they added a 15% service fee to our bill, which is basically a tip. We paid by card and when we got our receipt back to sign I noticed that there was an option to add a tip. We were already automatically charged for a tip, so why would we have to tip again? I think that's kind of sneaky. Needless to say, I don't think I will be returning or recommending this please to anyone anymore. read more

The family came to have lunch here because the Sushi restaurant we were going to go to was closed. We looked across the street and said, "Let's try it!". We were NOT disappointed. My mother is 91 years old. She walked into the place and the staff greeted her like she had just won a contest. They were so kind, so very respectful to her that I was in love the the business before we had been given a menu. The menu is pretty good. I am not an expert on Sushi but it seemed to me to have all the standard stuff necessary for a Sushi restaurant. So, I asked for help ordering and the lady who waited on us ( I think she is an owner but I could be wrong) was absolutely DELIGHTED to help me. She ordered me several dishes and every single one was tasty and fun. I have no idea what the stuff was, but it was good. As I said, I am hardly a Sushi expert. Honestly don't know where to begin.. Either the terrible service or the food poisoning my whole family got. To begin the server seemed to be in a rush to leave and pass her tables. Which I then understood because the second server came around she seemed not to do her job very well. Very rude and walked away before we could answer or ask for anything. Second, why was there only one server outside and one sushi chef at the bar doing to go orders, serving, greeting and packing to go orders?! Third, the california is a simple roll to prepare. Imitation crab, avocado, rice, seaweed. How come the crab was hard? like it had been sitting out for days. Fourth, it's not too hard to ask for refills, ask if everything is okay. Again occasionally two ladies would come out from the back kitchen and then go back inside... I go here weekly on my lunch break with my coworkers and when I need a relaxing place just to talk to friends. Ernie the head chef always make sure I am taken care of. And when I don't know what I want you can bet him to recommend me something. Last week I went there is a new server named Ari which was amazing! Amazing. We can in about 30 minutes till close. They were warm and welcoming . "Mamma" made us feel at home instantly offering drinks. Ernie gave us a great conversation and the rolls could not have been better. It had taken us a long time to find the right sushi home. We hate the in and out with no feeling. Have been coming here for a while now for lunch with my friend. Stopped in for lunch on Monday. My friend was very concerned as the waitress was not wearing a mask as I have a compromised immune system due to cancer. She politely asked her if she didn't mind wearing a mask as she was concerned for me. The waitress got very offended, left our table without saying a work and walked over to the sushi bar to talk to someone behind the counter. She never returned! We ended up leaving and going somewhere else. I did not think it was an unreasonable request as we are currently under a mask mandate so actually she should have been wearing one anyway. read more

I've been going to this restaurant for quite some time. I've been to all the sushi restaurants in the Modesto area and this is one of my favorites, along with Osaka Sushi. What I like about this restaurant though in comparison to Osaka Sushi and other sushi restaurants is: 1. They don't close in the afternoon. 2. They're open 7 days a week. 3. If you're "fat" conscious- they automatically use white meat chicken for their teriyaki chicken (ie: bento box)... you don't have to ask for a special request on the breast meat and have to pay a higher price... Their fish is high quality/fresh and their food is consistently good. My kids enjoy this restaurant and the staff is always friendly. Plus if you go during M-Th afternoons, they have 1/2 priced rolls- good/big selection to choose from. My ONLY complaint is that they do not have a kids menu. They do carry apple juice (Martinelli's) though and my kids like that... Neither child cares for soda so that is a plus!... read more

This place is pretty good! My cousin and I have recently started to follow a vegan diet, so it was cool that they had an actual vegan roll and it was really good! I don't remember exactly what was in the roll but the vegetables inside were fried, and they add a teriyaki sauce on top which I was told was vegan as well (teriyaki usually is). I also got an Avo-Q roll, which is just avocado and cucumber inside, but that was surprisingly delicious as well. The menu was a little overwhelming and confusing, & the vegan rolls aren't specially marked so they were a little tough to find. However, our waiter (I didn't catch his name) was very helpful and informative. The service was quick, the food was good, and we were not disappointed! I recommend asking for the sauce on the side if you're not a fan of too much sauce on your roll. I will try that next time and I'm sure it will be perfect! read more
