I absolutely love the place. The only reason I'm giving them 3 stars instead of 5 is because 2 separate times a week apart I called to order sushi to go. Both times the person who answered the phone said can you give me one moment then preceded to put me on hold never to come back 10+ minutes later. One chef didn't have a mask on, our rolls were pretty tasteless I had one with eel and it was poorly made and flavorless. The firehouse roll has a salad on it which caused the roll to be completely soggy. Tempura was the only good thing, could have used more than two pieces of shrimp but it was the only redeeming thing. Ok, you guys, it's been a minute since I've reviewed this place so it's high time to update. 1) the food remains DOPE. Fresh sushi made with care in crazy cool combinations. 2) the service is really good. Sometimes it feels a tiiiiiny but slow- but it's only because the servers are working so hard to give excellent customer service to everyone. If it was fake, they could be faster. I'd rather a waiter ask "how's everything?" and MEAN IT instead of "how's everything" as they are walking away to a table they think will order more or get a better tip from. ***PS waiters, I'm broke as heck, but when I save up to buy food instead of make it, I damn well make sure I tip well, cause I've worked customer service and I know the struggle. Don't judge a book by their cover. Sometimes the richest people are the stingiest. How do you think they keep their money? Be nice to all customers :) 3) the price to value: for Japanese food, which is relatively expensive, they don't skimp. If you aren't sure what to order, I recommend a "bento box." It's basically small portions of several things. Think "dim sum," if you are familiar with Chinese food. They give you rice, miso soup, salad, and then a main and 2 California rolls. Soooo user friendly. If one thing sucks, you still have a bunch of options. (In my six yrs dining here, NOTHING sucks.) and they don't gouge you. The "prix fixe" (French for: limited menu, but good food at a REALLY good price) bento is a life saver for people on a budget or never tried Japanese food and are scared to try :) That's my review to date. Hadn't had sushi in a long time and decided to take my friend with me. We arrived to a semi-full restaurant and were seated immediately. Not long after being seated our orders were taken by a young lady who didn't really introduce herself but jotted it all down. I ordered the Dragon Roll along with Tuna Sashimi while my friend ordered up a spicy roll of some sort. After some conversation with my friend, at least 15 mins or maybe more, an older lady approached our table asking if we had ordered. We both looked at her and said we did then she asked who took our order. Unable to come up with a name she said she'd take care of it. Now we are thinking our orders were never placed and then it was confirmed when the waitress came to our table to confirm our order again then we basically got an "oops". After that the owner or restaurant manager came to our table with many apologies. By this point we were annoyed but the food came shortly after that and was very good. Our waitress came by to make sure we were enjoying our food then we didn't see her again, perhaps she isn't ready for the floor, just saying. After a bit we got the check but it wasn't our check rather the table behind us and they had ours. A quick switch was made and I paid the bill. Here is where things got interesting. The bill was supposed to be $31.03 but they ran the card for $.03, really?! At this point I had given up, if I were to have said something they would've probably overcharged me so I just went with it, added a tip and made a beeline for the car. When we walked in, we were greeted by a lady who I think was the owner and she was very nice and friendly! Select rolls are also half off on the weekdays! There's a pretty wide selection and although it's not the best sushi I've ever had, it was pretty decent especially for being half priced. Our waiter was also very helpful and checked on us often and after our meal, the lady that greeted us came to our table and chatted with us for a bit which was nice too. My 15-year old niece and I decided to try this place out because the place that we were going to go was closed on Sunday. Fortunately for us, Umi Sushi was open. We were in there around 6pm on a Sunday and it was pretty dead. I think that we were the only table in there for a while. The person who greeted us was super nice and let us sit wherever we wanted. She brought us menus right away and immediately got us our drinks. The menu is extensive and close to being overwhelming. There has to be around 100 Special Rolls on there. That being said, there's obviously something for everyone! We weren't starving or anything, so we went with a deep fried California roll and a Sushi Boy roll. For an appetizer, we went with the Shrimp Kushi (teriyaki shrimp on skewers). The deep fried California roll was great. It was the shredded fake crab in the middle, not just a stick, and an ample amount of avocado. They sliced it diagonally and while it was aesthetically pleasing, the pieces were too big for one bite. That aside, it was freaking delicious. The Sushi Boy roll consisted of spicy crab, salmon, avocado, fish roe and a unagi/special sauce. That thing was insanely delicious. It wasn't cut diagonally so it was extremely easy to rapidly fire the pieces down my gullet. The Shrimp Kushi came out after our food did, so it wasn't so much of an appetizer as it was a delightful accompaniment to our sushi rolls. You got two skewers with three shrimp on each one in a fairly sweet teriyaki sauce. They were good, but I doubt that I'd order it again. Overall, this place rules. The interior is very modern and well lit. They have two large TVs in there that each had a baseball game on when we were there. Our food came out super fast and even though that was probably because we were the only ones in there, it's always nice to not be ignored. We will totally be coming back to Umi Sushi. read more

Disappointed in the variety, seemed to only have a lot of different rolls but few non sushi options. Everything seemed mediocre with the food and my boss and I felt a little underwhelmed as we left.. They always great me with this Japanese saying (no idea what it means) and the owner always seems to be very personal with you.. like you are the only customer in the entire restaurant. This restaurant's food is really really delicious, but some of the employees can be a bit unprofessional. I love their food, which attracts me here constantly. The service is horrible here. Some of the waitress are lazy and some don't tend to their customers for a long period of time. There was a time where I waited an hour for my food. It wasn't even busy. I was super excited when I noticed a sushi restaurant was going across the street from Sushi Garden because I often get Sushi cravings on Sundays (the one day Sushi Gaden is closed), because I have a short lunch break (there is almost always a 15-20 min wait for a table) & because I just knew that any Sushi joint that dare go across the street from Sushi Garden would have surely done their homework & tried everything on the menu to make sure their Sushi was just as delish if not better than the competition. I was sadly disappointed. The decor is nice, very modern with lots of taupe and brown & an eye catching sushi bar. I was seated immediately- YAY no wait! The staff immediately greet you & make you feel really comfortable and welcomed, they even thank you as you leave and are just super genuinely friendly people. I ordered the Tempura Scallop roll & my friend ordered the Crumbled something roll. They arrived in less than 10 minutes but no soup because it isn't served with your rolls & costs extra. My TS Roll had the same amount of pieces as the TS roll across the street but each slice was very thin and small, almost half the width of a normal slice. The TS roll also have a very strong fishy taste and smell which bummed me out bc who wants to go back to work smelling like a fish bowl? The 3rd strike was that the roll was also dry... despite having sauce drizzled on top. So not only was I still hungry, had a strong fish taste in my mouth but I was also super thirsty and for the same price I would have paid to be full, kissable and quenced across the street. I would try this place again. Maybe... just to give it one more chance... to try one more roll. But only if it was Sunday. And only because the staff was so nice. The waitress told us to take a seat and then came over right away to bring us beverages. She was very personable and friendly. We ordered 4 rolls and a miso soup. Came here last night with a group of friends whom I haven't seen for over a year all together. The staff were very gracious in the amount of people we had in our party. First we said 5 people but then it grew to 6 and they easily accommodated us. If you have a party of 6 or more, I would give them a call ahead of time so that they can be prepared. Food was delicious and all of our food arrived at the same time. Crunchy Roll, Spicy Dragon Roll, Dragon Roll, Teriyaki Benito Box, Spicy Ramen, and an Assortment of Sashimi was what our party order on separate tabs which was no problem in keeping track for them. Atmosphere was dark, but also lite well by the over hanging lamps. Normally the place is quiet/moderate, but because we were there- we definitely made the place loud for sure. Sorry! Earlier today I ordered delivery from Umi. It had been a while since I was there in person but I didn't consider it bad by any stretch. Today was different. At first I was ready to blame the delivery driver on the state of how the food arrived, until I looked closer and tasted it. The rolls included in the bento had partially unrolled, which isn't going to happen from the box being tipped if made correctly. The salmon teriyaki was mushy. Even soft salmon will still flake, but this just mushed when pressed with a fork. The sunomono, the cucumbers were not crisp, and showed signs of ice crystal defrost. Sunomono is also supposed to be a rice vinegar based cucumber salad, yet there was more liquid in its container than there was in the miso soup. There was also an odd bitter flavor to it, and after a couple bites I tossed the rest. The only reason this is even two stars is that the gyoza were perfectly fried, and even arranged nicely in the box, which makes me feel even more that those were not prepared by the same person who made the salmon teriyaki, and the presentation not the fault of the driver (since that would have been messed up too being in the same bad had it been the drivers fault). read more

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars because the service is absolutely terrible!! This was my first experience with sushi in the Modesto area and I hope it's not indicative of the rest. I'll start with the good. The customer service was excellent. Our waitress greeted us immediately and brought us to a table with no wait. She was friendly and quick. Our drinks were always filled and she checked up on us from time to time. My husband and I ordered the mixed tempura to start. No complaints with that. The tempura was light and crispy, not oily tasting at all. It included two decent sized shrimp and a mix of veggies. The menu was extensive, overwhelmingly so. There were about 100 different rolls to choose from. There was a page of rolls offered at half price during the week, the majority of them came to about $6, which was a good deal. We opted for a Miss Kim roll, a Blue Ocean roll, a Jay Jay roll, and a Jack roll. It seems that all of the rolls are covered in sauce, sometimes more than one. I was a little leery, as it may be a way to cover fish that isn't quite fresh. The Jack roll arrived first and we were surprised to find that the shrimp tempura inside it was pre-cooked and cold. Not the best way to start. My Jay Jay roll fell apart when I picked up the pieces. The Miss Kim roll was pretty good but the Blue Ocean was very fishy tasting to me. The wasabi was watery and the ginger was the generic pink variety. We finished the meal with green tea mochi, which were cut into pieces and served on tooth picks. The table next to us had ordered bento boxes and they looked quite good. I think you might be better off ordering that sort of thing here than the sushi. So, to sum it up, the service and atmosphere were great but the sushi itself was mediocre. It reminded me of stuff you pick up at the supermarket. read more

Woman comes to take our order simple enough: Redhead gets the MJC Roll I go with my standard Tako Hamachi Spanish Mackerel Roll arrives, it's good, we actually really enjoyed it. Redhead starts asking about the Tako and suckers and how everything is going to taste. Tako arrives....excited...one of my favorites. #Frozen in the middle... Frustrated and irritated already from the "How You Pay" comment this ship is sinking fast. Then comes the Hamachi, tastes old and smells. The Daikon is brown and wilted. All I wanted is fresh fish especially since I have an issue with fish in the valley for this reason. The server woman comes over and The Redhead and tells the woman that it is frozen, they literally go back and forth for a minute saying frozen. Finally walking away looking confused. Final straw - Spanish Mackerel comes out... The color is off, the smell is noticeable and the fish is falling apart. The Daikon under it is quickly turning brown. I take a piece and try... I hold it in and The Redhead sees me take my napkin and I pull it to my mouth as I empty the fish into the napkin. Couldn't take it anymore. Pushed the food away and left it. Paid with our card and left frustrated. They took off the Tako, but I left no tip and I have no desire to step into that facility again. Third time going here. Last time the rice in the rolls was mushy. This time- Ramen - I swear I paid $7 for chicken flavored instant ramen and with a few bits of over cooked mushy cabbage and carrots. Oh and a poached egg that was pretty much hard boiled dried out crap. I should have known better when it didn't say what kind of broth they use. Portion was small compared to places that serve proper ramen. Golden Gate roll - got it because I'd never had steak in a roll. Couldn't even taste the meat. The other two rolls pretty much tasted the same as each other. All the sauces seemed watery. The overall taste was just bland, like maybe the ingredients weren't fresh or something. Even the wasabi was weak. And the presentation wasn't really great, if you care about that. The place was cold inside. The bathroom needed some work - dusty vents, weak lighting, mineral deposits, missing seat liners.
