I love Umi, but my god, update your hours. It's 6:41 on Wednesday and you're not open. That sucks when you make dinner plans.

Doors wide open, open sign flashing, allowed us to take the time to peruse the menu and get excited about our order (which was significantly overpriced), an hour before closing and then all of the sudden they tell us that they are closing early and that we can't order food without any form of explanation. I've had the sushi before and it was nothing to write home about, let alone charge $20 a roll, but they happen to be the only sushi spot around, so I guess they can set their prices to be whatever they want. Wouldn't normally write a review, but man, such rude service. read more

After living in Arizona for 4 years- I haven't had much chance to eat at an excellent Japanese restaurant. UMI Sushi was definitely worth the long trip! I had the salmon nigri and vegetable tempura. Both wonderfully prepared. The service was friendly and efficient. I'll be back! read more

We've always been happy when we visit but our latest visit was a disappointment. They need to change the oil - we had 3 items. One deep fried roll and one calamari - both came out with the breading being very dark - and the breading tasted terrible. In addition, the calamari rings dripped grease. Yuk. Our Dragon roll was ok, not great but ok. We will give the another chance but if that visit disappoints us we won't be back. read more

There aren't many restaurant options in Ocean Shores, so you'll mostly find sushi, rolls, and teriyaki. That's one reason this place stands out--they offer a wider variety compared to others in the area. The ownership has changed maybe about a year ago and with that, the menu has shifted more toward more different types of rolls and ramen. My husband and I have dined here more than a couple of times since the change. One thing I noticed right away is that the service has improved--the staff are much friendlier now, which makes a big difference. That said, I do miss one of the dishes from the previous menu. That was a " bibimbap with sushi " type of dish. The food back then was very good, but the service wasn't as welcoming. Now it feels like the opposite has improved. I've also ordered takeout a few times, including bento boxes and teriyaki. The food is tasty, but the prices are a bit higher compared to other teriyaki spots. I understand that Ocean Shores has fewer customers, so pricing may be different, but slightly lower prices could attract more repeat visits. Would I come back? Probably yes--this is one of my comfort food spots and there aren't many alternatives in Ocean Shores. read more

I came here on a rainy day and had lunch. I started with the calamari starter. This was over cooked and wasn't what I was expecting. It's calamari rings. Then I ordered a roll with popcorn shrimp on top along with tomago amd tobiko. Their sushi is lovely. No problems there. The service is prompt and attentive and it's a small local restaurant with general decor. I'd come back for the sushi. It's actually decent for being so far from suppliers. read more

Food great, comfort not so much, but it is often uncrowded, and was open on Easter. Service always been good.

This was one of the first restaurants I decided to try in ocean shores. The food was pretty good and the service was decent as well. Ambiance was a lot more casual and they were not too busy when we got there. I ordered food for the kids and they loved it but they do not have a menu for kids so be ready to pay for adult meals for them as well. My only complaint would be the price, I know sushi can get expensive but this was one of the more pricey places I have been to for what you get. They are close to the water so I'm sure there are plenty tourist willing to pay. If you want sushi though and don't mind higher prices then you will probably enjoy this place. read more

This place is unreasonable and Guilty of false advertising. We presented ourselves at 7:15pm for dinner. Door was open. Sign advertised 8pm closing. We were denied seating and only offered to go ordering. Place was clearly not prepared to receive guest as promoted. The family behind had to leave as well. I'm very frustrated and trying to express my disappointment without going into the impact this had on our plans for the rest of the evening. Suggest you consider another option! Solid sushi! My husband and I tried this place today. He got a bento box and I got the "shogun" plate, which was a combo of nigiri and sushi rolls (chef's choice on the nigiri). I also added a couple of pieces of unagi (eel), my fav. We each tried everything....was really yummy and fresh! Tempura was really light and crispy. We'll definitely be back. My boyfriend and I came here this past week for dinner. We originally were going to go to Genie Pizza down the way, but they were cash only and so we went to Umi instead. Umi is a family-run restaurant. The owner's cute daughter greets you by the door. There is a television with cartoon shows playing in one corner of the restaurant. I ordered a bento with teriyaki chicken, tempura, and spicy tuna roll ($19.95). The bentos came with rice, miso soup, and salad. My boyfriend ordered the same except with gyoza instead of tempura. The miso soup was hot and not overly salty. It comes from a mix like most other miso soups. They serve it in cute barrel-like bowls with soup spoons. Traditionally, you drink soup right out of the bowl without a spoon, but maybe they're trying to cater to a more modern audience. The bento box was more than enough for me; my boyfriend ate some of my mine because he wasn't quite filled by his. The tempura was the best part of the bento; it included potato, sweet potato, broccoli, shrimp, and onion. Some vegetable pieces were slightly undercooked, but not terribly. The tempura sauce though was watery and tasteless- you're better off just using the soy sauce provided at the table. The chicken teriyaki was okay- the sauce was kind of thick; you can tell it comes straight out of a bottle. The spicy tuna roll was also just okay; it was a bit too mushy for my taste but at least had a kick of sriracha to it. The rice was slightly too mushy. The salad was not going to lie, pretty sad. The cabbage was wilted and the salad dressing was overly thick. Service was good. We were quick to be served, granted it was around 8pm and so there were only a few other diners in the restaurant. In summary, this was the Asian food I was expecting in Ocean Shores. Just passable for those who want something other than fish or pizza, but nothing to rave home about. The portions are a joke and for the price the quality and flavor is a terrible. The Katsu was so dry, borderline jerky. The flavor of the honey garlic chicken was ok but the portion is tiny, absolutely not worth $23. The generals chicken is about half as good as a mall food court generals chicken. The portion is so small seriously I wouldn't pay more than $8 for it if I was starving. The yakisoba was meh, the sushi was meh. Door dashed $150 with of food to a condo and it was a mistake. They count on the fact people are new to the area and will pay for it but don't do it. For the price they at least need to be serving a decent portions. We also had the Calamari tempura which was good but again 8:50 for 5 calamari rings. Mu husband ordered a chicken yakisoba. The chicken was tasteless and again very small amount. I ordered the shrimp fried rice. It was also tasteless and the amount of shrimp was also a joke and was the king of shrimp we use in cocktail shrimp. The tiniest you can find. Both plates came with a tiny portion of salad. Also tasteless. I just had a bite and gave up. Drinks are on the bottle and the tea came already made in a cup. I don't know if it comes with refills or not. I wonder if their sushi is better then the food we got but at this point I am pretty sure I won't be back. The service is as horrible as the food is. Waiter was not interested on being there at all and never came to check on us. Definitely I do not recommend this place. Food was luck warm, asked for extra teriyaki sauce. They informed us it was an extra cost. We didn't ask how much, but should have. The bento box was already $21.99 + $2.00 for 2 tablespoon of extra sauce. I am a resident of Ocean Shore and will not return to this restaurant. Charging me extra for sauce when Teriyaki should have had ample amount on it. Very sad. read more

There aren't enough stars to express how much my wife and I enjoyed this meal. We ordered the Umi Combo which consisted of nigiri, tuna, and crunchy roll. It was just the right amount of food for the 2 of us. In addition my wife had green tea and a small hot sake and I had a large sake. There was a large order ahead of us, but even so we didn't have to wait that long. My grandparents came from Japan in the early 1900's so I've been eating sushi all of my life so I appreciate a good sushi restaurant. We come to Ocean Shores every few years and this is the first time I've ever noticed this place. I asked our server how long they had been in business and she wasn't sure, but the current owners took over this past July. We ordered lunch here a couple weeks back for pick up and overall the food was pretty good! We ordered the 3 item bento (chicken teriyaki, mixed tempera and sashimi) and came with a side of miso soup. The food was good and flavorful but compared to your average bento, the portions were really small! This was $16.50 before tax which isn't terrible for lunch prices but definitely did not expect portions to be so little. We also ordered the Shogun sushi combo ($22.50 before tax) and I was surprised with how good everything was! The portion and variety of this combo was great. This is a great option for Asian food if you're in ocean shores. Will definitely order from here again next time and will try their other items! read more

This is an update of a review that I made a couple of years ago. That review was harsh and very critical and although I said I would not return I did go back just recently, as everyone deserves a second chance. After doing so I must stand by my original review and say if anything All aspects of this business have gotten worse. I am shocked at the fact that they are still open. the service is rude and arrogant and quite honestly I've had better sushi at a gas station. I didn't have high expectations going here but it had overall decent reviews, so figured it would be fine. After getting to the restaurant, there was only one other customer. It took a while for the single server to come over and take our order. The food came out fairly quickly but they didn't give us any plates. After waiting for a while, I ended up getting up and getting my own. Didn't come to check on us the entire time, didn't refill our drinks, and when we were finished, had to go to the counter to pay because he wasn't coming back. He seemed uninterested in serving, would drop off food, and then leave before I could ask anything. Extremely poor service and I wouldn't go back even if the food had been excellent. As far as the food, overpriced, although that's expected. The spicy tuna and rainbow roll were fine, but nothing to rave about. The dragon ball was a bunch of imitation crab with almost no tuna. So first I want to be really clear about what I am reviewing...because it doesn't matter how great the food is, if you have a waiter that is horrible with customer, it ruins the whole experience. I am a true foodie, love food and usually the experience of dining! I Yelped this place prior to coming and so was looking forward to eating here. I realized when we arrived it was going to be a mixed experience, because there is alot of Korean influence, it wasn't just Japanese. There was a group of us that went to eat...probably about 10 of us. We order our food from a male waiter...and he was very rude and short. Didn't answer questions and didn't act like he wanted to be there. So we get our orders after awhile and this guy...serves me from the other side of the table and hit my friend in the head twice by reaching across him to put my food on the table. So the second time he reached across my friend, I asked him if he could walk around the table and serve my food from my side...and he comes around and says, " Can you just grab it, I don't have time!" I don't know about you, or how you would act if someone said that to you...but the hairs stood up on my neck!!! It took everything I had not to respond to him with the same attitude he had! After counting to 25...I went up to the register and talked with a woman there, I am assuming that she was the owner, not sure. But after explaining what the waiter did...I also made sure to let her know that he was rude and had hit my friend in the head twice by reaching across him to put food on the table and that it wasn't ok. Obviously other people have complained about him, as I saw some of it in the reviews...and so why would you want someone like him being the face of your business and interacting with customers....she said that they had issues/problems with him before and that they were trying to work with him and train him. Suggestion: keep him in the kitchen away from customers, he just hasn't ran into the right one yet! The experience with this waiter, wasn't going to ruin my evening, because I know that I can write about it here...I know that I am a fair person, but when you have a business that relies on the your customers liking what you present, it would seem like you would care about how one of your employees treats your customers! And so the best apology you can offer is to change the behavior...what did they do...they sent him back over to the table!!! Are you kidding me? Had a very nice lunch today at UMI. Four massive portions of sushi and seaweed salad. The rolls were well made and the flavor was excellent. They handled the onslaught of a large convention being in town with slightly slow but very friendly service. Will be back next time I'm in town. read more

I loved this place. They had unfortunately closed early the first time I wanted to eat there, but that's whatever. When I arrived on my second attempt, I was sat within seconds and was pleased with the variety on the menu. The price of a large supporo was fair and the bento box I ordered was perfect. Came here years ago for sushi and it was a 5-star experience. Not sure what happened (new owner?), but now it is mediocre at best. While sushi isn't the first thing you think of at Ocean Shores, UMI Sushi hit the spot. One of the things they didn't have on their menu was ikura, salmon eggs, so my kids had to forgo one of their favorites. All that we did have was good, though service was a little slow since there is only one waitress and one sushi chef; lucky for us there was only one other table at 7 pm on a Saturday night. They close at 8, so everyone else must have been having pizza, as there are several pizza places in Ocean Shores. read more

Came in here the other day and we were the only table in the restaurant there were three of us. The waiter came over and gave us menus we asked for water and he just was texting on his phone for about 10 minutes we finally asked him to come to our table so we could order. We asked for 3 checks and he took our order. He now brought the water with the beer. We then received our food which was very good and then at the end we asked for the check and he gave us one check and just walked away. So for a beach town the sushi was good the service was horrible. But I think those are the times we are now in. read more

Hadn't been here for two years and I'm sorry I went. There were 3 other tables with diners yet the waiter was oh so slow. Speaking of the waiter he wore a down ski jacket because it was so damn cold in the place. Sure they save money by not heating the place but I'm not going back. My pet peeve is that they serve fish and call it CRAB. At best it is imitation crab aka krab aka surimi. In fine print at the bottom of the menu it clearly states that. But on the menu it says Crab. When people read that they think "Crab". We live in Washington State where Dungeness Crab is abundant. read more
