Consistently fresh fish; Im big on hamachi and can be pretty picky about it. I love that we have a good sit down sushi spot here in town. Can't remember which rolls we had but the group split 5-6 different ones, which we all liked. Have been here maybe seven times, good for a date but also chill for kids. The servers always make great recommendations when the kids dont know what to get and want something new. I almost got two flavored lemonades last time we went, but Nyah recommended my girls split one since it's a huge serving and they are tiny girls! I was honestly pretty surprised by their sushi. The way they cure their fish, remind me of a Japanese style sushi and not an American sushi restaurant, which caught me off guard. I travel the coast regularly as my work requires travel, but honestly this was probably the most "traditional" tasting sushi restaurant from coastal Washington to Northern california. The staff were friendly and service felt somewhat like a casual dining service. Here is the criticism portion, while I very much enjoyed the food, it also made me have higher standards as it is a more traditional Japanese style sushi. I personally felt like all the nigiri were great, but the spicy tuna roll that came along with it wasn't the best. I feel like it was an item that was there to make it more suitable for American customers, but honestly it didn't really feel like it belongs as the sushi is more traditional, focusing on more simple flavors but with depth. The rice proportion is a little big, but not only that, i feel like the texture of the rice was a little on the mushy side, and it also lacked flavor. I was a bit disappointed that there were repeats in the deluxe nigiri since I am honestly ordering this so I can try multiple of their flavors at a simplified/refined state. i did end up ordering Saba(mackerel)/unagi(eel) separately as I was craving stronger flavors and I was curious as they had it on the menu, but it wasn't on the deluxe I had ordered. It was really good which added to my disappointment. Overall, I think it is a great sushi restaurant, but it can do with some improvements to become a GREAT one. read more

when I 1st walked in, I loved the ambiance, space seemed limited in size but has a nice open room setting & relaxing dark color scheme, although not comfortable seeing the large glowing red floor heater by one table setting near the restroom exit, it was gone after the couple sitting there left so I'm sure it was there for them. Realizing since post covid business costs have jumped dramatically & labor limited, I expected prices to be a little higher than is used to be dining & service taking a bit longer. In this case, overall the service was good, considering there were only 2 servers & 1 chef that I could see with I think the owner running around in the back, but everyone was spot on friendly, even the chef that delivered my meal. I had the crunchy roll with miso soup & hot green tea with a cucumber roll as a fresh closer to my meal and green tea mochi ice cream for desert. The miso soup was perfectly delicious, something I always love to start my meal with, a whole pot of hot green tea that perfectly complimented my whole meal, and the crunchy roll with tempura shrimp, avocado, & such was very very tasty, although the rice with the slices was not very firm to hold with chopsticks & dip into the wasabi & soy sauce, ended up eating them carefully by hand, and the waitress was kind enough to check with the chef who complied with making the cucumber roll in the more traditional way rolled with the nori on the outside. I was a little disappointed in not really getting to try out my new pair of SnowPeak chopsticks I got as a gift, should have asked for a tempura shrimp roll without the crunchy specialty, rice might have been firmer, but overall the meal was delicious, a little spendy at about $28 for all of it not counting tip which was more than adequate, but the chef did do a little extra with the cucumber roll, I had plenty of nice hot green tea, and every one there were very friendly & attentive with me. Might have been more economical with other menu choices, but that is what I typically order for sushi which usually comes in a combo with 2 rolls not counting the added cucumber roll. I had a hard time navigating thru the menu, which had so many choices, but was not clear if the miso soup & tea went with the meal or what, I couldn't find just a tempura shrimp roll, & don't like having to ask so many questions of the menu although the cucumber roll thing is somewhat of a deal with me, being a favorite my mom does for me when I visit, and she once told me while dining out that the cucumber roll is a nice refreshing course at the end of a sushi meal to "cleanse your palate", especially done the more authentic Japanese way, although I didn't ask to have the cucumber sliced in thicker spears like she does. Really others should try it, see my picture to get the idea... Overall score was more around 4 of 5 stars for food & service with minor room for improvement, & I feel bad but I had to be brutally honest & give it a 3 not feeling the value was there for a meal I consider more casual than big treat & fancy dinner fare. Good grief, I love sushi so much but man their sushi tastes like the stuff you can buy in the 7/11 gas station. For $60 for 4 rolls you would think they would have amazing quality sushi. The rice was practically dried out like it sat to air for most of the day. The nori did not taste very good and their fish just tasted okay. I had to drown my food in soy sauce and lemon juice to make it somewhat palatable. The imitation crab was meager and sad as well. I may be spoiled by Aya Sushi in Olympia because at least I can trust I will have real crab in my sushi. And for the same cost. The spicy scallop roll had no scallops. Just some of the same quality sushi and some spicy sauce drizzled on top. I could not finish my food and ultimately chose to dump it. What a waste of $60. If you love sushi do not come here. If you think trailer park 7/11 sushi is good sushi then this would be the place for you. read more

I had to come to this town for work, and as a Texas transplant to this area I was very open minded about food. I checked Yelp and this places did a decent enough review business to give it a try. The ambiance was average. Very much what Americans expect of an Asian style restaurant. I have not spent a lot of time up here, so is a space heater next to a table an average thing? I will say that walking in, I stood there for a while in front of their "wait to be seated sign." Similarly when I was finally seated, it was about ten minutes before my waiter/waitress came. The menu is simple. Sushi, ramen, udon noodles etc. I took a Quick Look, found a local brewery on draft (Steam Donkey), gyoza (I'm fond of them), and an advertised spicy roll, vampire roll. When my waitress eventually arrived, I order my appetizer, main course and drink at once. My gyoza were probably the best I have ever had. Crisp outer shell, well seasoned inside, infused with matcha for veggie and left crisp and brown for pork. Seriously, loved this. And the miso soup, delicious. My sushi roll, was disappointing. Especially at their price point. Imagine a California roll with imitation crab, that they added sriracha rice to the top and up charge you almost 20 for, what you get is a mediocre dish, you pay through the nose for. Just didn't think the quality matched their price point. Service 2/5 - they were friendly and polite, but I waited a long time for a table and to make my order. Food: 3/5* - gyoza and the miso were good(5/5) , sushi was average (3/5). Menu needs some dish diversity but might try again for the gyoza. read more

Excellent Service!!! We had a great time and the Sashimi/Hamachi was delicious!!! Melted in my mouth and tasted like it just came out of the ocean. The Sushi Alaska was yummy and we enjoyed their Udon too. We love stopping of here on our way to Ocean Shores, and it's our go to in Grays Harbor. We will be back! BTW, try their lemon-aid it's bottom-less and it's real. Thank you for sharing your delicious food. I've always gotta order the westport, vampire roll and Philadelphia. Other good ones are the tiger roll, Alaskan roll, and volcano roll. The avacado boat and calamari is delicious. Even on a busy end-of-summer holiday weekend Saturday evening, we had absolutely superb service and food at Samurai. After a day at the beach, we were driving back through Aberdeen and found Samurai using Yelp. In the mood for sushi, the reviews indicated a promising possibility. Our server, a very pleasant young man, took our order and started bringing food. We had ordered five items, miso soup, a side of rice, and tea. The soup, rice, and tea came immediately. Our server notified us that one of the items was out of stock, but when the sushi came, it had been substituted with smoked salmon sushi. The quality of the fish was absolutely tip-top. We were very impressed with everything, but were particularly impressed with the unagi (fresh water eel), the yellowtail, and the smoked salmon. Both the smoked salmon and the "regular" salmon were extremely fine-grained, just melting on the tongue. The pieces of fish used in the sushi were very generous. Wow. My wife and I have had the opportunity to have sushi in many places around the world, including at the Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo. We've been eating sushi for decades. Our selections at Samurai were among the very best we've ever had. read more

Got takeout, most of the items were pretty okay but tbh. The fish was fine but not particularly flavorful. At my favorite sushi places, I generally avoid fried items because I want to enjoy the fish in it's simplicity - here I found the rolls with fried items to be enjoyable (I generally order these types of rolls at my partners request). This was my order: Avocado boat: nice spice level but weird and dense filling Blackjack roll: decent size but bland. Philly: pretty typical philly roll as far as I could tell Diablo roll: all the fish products were deep fried and garnished with some jalapeno that really tied the flavors together California roll: ok Salmon tempura roll: probably one of the better rolls out of the bunch. 5 rolls and 1 appetizer and the bill was around $100. Not unheard of, but not cheap either. Would have expected more in terms of quality for the price. read more

Nice restaurant with great service. It gets pretty full, even on a weekday, so reservations are recommended. Like all fine dining, it's pricey but you get nice thick pieces of fish and husband said that the rolls are great too. Only complaint would be that they don't have soy paper for the rolls. I don't do well with seaweed so I was limited to nigiri and tempura, which was great. This will be our go to place for sushi and it's nice having it so close by. Best sushi I've had in a long time. The quality of fish is unmatched. This restaurant could hold its own in Seattle or Portland. To find a gem like this in Aberdeen is a gift from the food gods. Tuna tataki? Perfect! The chirashi bowl is a generous gift from the sea. The sizzling plates a bulgogi look amazing but I can't cry myself away from the sashimi and nigiri long enough to try! Sadly there are not many sushi places in Greys harbor area. Our expectations were too high with seeing the awards they have received in recent years. They had no market fish such as sweet shrimp or fatty tuna. We were charged for scallops which we didn't receive. The rice was off it was not sticky enough because it was undercooked . They also do bot give ginger or wasabi unless mentioned. We did get our sushi Togo because that is all that is available which is understandable. However maybe eating in would be more enjoyable because the atmosphere seems nice . The Itamae seems nice. read more

Horrible customer service. This is 2nd time I am trying to get in here. First time we drove there because they website said they are open, but they were closed. Second time we came 22 mins before closing, and they didn't even let us order to go, and kicked us out because they "stop taking orders at 7:30 PM", come on..... I honestly think this was discrimination because we were Ukrainian, and in our 30s. And seem like they had only old people there with deep pockets. What a garbage business and waste of time. The reason I give two stars and not one is because the food was okay but the service was distasteful. I was given an immense amount of attitude for simply asking what vegetables were in their ramen. I was shocked to say the least. I also asked for no spice and was given a bowl of spicy chicken ramen. Well I came here for lunch on the first Friday of Lent with hopes of building a bento that is seafood and vegetables like shrimp tempura and vegetable tempura with rice and sides but their bento box menu isn't flexible enough so I had to order from the appetizer menu. So it's my feelings that a build able bento list could work because it creates more combinations without going outside of the products on your menu or your kitchen. It's not complicated because traditional bento restaurants and delicatessens have okazuya style bento building on their menu. Perhaps these guys haven't been exposed to traditional okazuya service? I'm not sure if they'll consider this menu option? But a man can dream and have hope can't I? read more

This place is my dream come true. I moved to Hoquiam in April 2017 and immediately found Samurai. I ate there at least twice a week for 9 months.
