I give the food 5 out of 5 stars! The food tasted amazing. Everything was delicious and perfectly done. The presentation was perfection. Ambiance was beautiful. We sat in the indoor patio. We were greeted and seated by a sweet Caucasian lady. She was all smiles and prompt. Then a different lady came to get our order. She's Pacific Islander(?) she came off a bit rude. One of the rolls we got could have been ordered in 3 different ways, she didn't ask how we wanted it cooked and walked off. The gyoza was available in pork or vegetable, also no option given to us. My husband had to go chase her down to ask for vegetable gyoza because we can't have pork. The food was really great but wish the service matched. read more

The owner takes pride in the preparation and execution of her menu. I stopped by for lunch just as they were opening today and enjoyed the seafood salad (greens and apples, mixed sashimi over a bed of rice. The homemade dressings were delicious as was the miso soup. I'll try some of the lunch bento boxes next time I visit. read more

Third time here and, wow... if you are trying to decide where to get sushi in the area, no need to read the rest of the review, just go. You won't be disappointed. Service: great food: fantastic and super fresh seating options: a little bit of everything. They have nice outdoor seating (if you are not from the area, always have a hoodie) the marine layer can roll in early. Indoor seating is limited, but comfortable. Very clean, very large and the citrus combo was really delicious. No fishy smell, very fresh and highly recommend. 10 piece sushi- came with salad and miso soup. Salad was amazing. Not your typical just bagged lettuce and carrots. Fresh, came with strawberries, pineapple, beets and a nice dressing. The miso soup was also delicious. No tofu but did have seaweed and the taste was almost too salty but not actually over the line. Really enjoyed the miso soup. Here's where the lower score comes in. The actually sushi I was so disappointed in. After having such an amazing lead up, it just flopped. Rice to fish ratio was off, too much rice. Not sure if it even was sushi rice but there was something definitely off. The rice didn't hold its shape and it was dry and bland. Usually some mirin or rice vinegar is mixed to add a little hint of flavor but nothing. This led to the fish also being bland and dry? Can raw fish be raw? It wasn't inedible but it really had zero flavor at all. There was also too much wasabi, for my taste. I love nigiri but this was very disappointing. I would go back to try other food but I think the nigiri I will skip. Still if you're in the area, stop by and grab some food. read more

Went for lunch on Saturday with a friend. She had the chicken teriyaki and I had the Diablo roll, which was supposed to have salmon on top but they had to substitute a white fish instead (which they told me ahead of serving it). My friend loved the teriyaki--big portion, good flavor. My roll was good, but pricey at $23. Service was friendly and quick, and the outdoor patio was pleasant. Every time I come here I'm very happy with the food and service. The fish is always great quality and taste very fresh. But aside from the sushi and rolls, there's many other fantastic choices. Really disappointed about my experience. The food was still very good, however there was a staff member who was bullying the other staff terribly and were loud about it at that. The restaurant was not busy at all so we could hear every word of it. We heard him berating a kitchen staff member for not ringing a bell when food was done, making fun of the sushi chef in a really uncomfortable way, and just being generally loud and obnoxious with his remarks to the other quiet and seemingly respectful staff members. The sushi chef looked at us after one of the exchanges and looked so embarrassed. Not sure what was going on with this guy, but it was uncomfortable to listen to, especially when you're trying to have a nice meal. Other than that, I suppose the experience was just fine. Waiting is not a problem but no acknowledgement I'm standing there is rather poor. Just a simple hello would have been nice. Food ordered was the scallop dynamite, a good serving of scallops, good serving of sand calms, and onions. Sadness comes when drive from the Marriott Vespera Resort to pick your food and found out the quail egg was missing and clearly it's states in the all this seafood is served on a bed of rice and there was NO RICE. We just rediscovered this place in are eating there at least once a week. And then we take home a jar of kimchi. Which is so good and good for you. They have a sample trio on the menu. It's really hard to follow Goshi... Ordered a sashimi platter. Our waiter, though pleasant, was not accurate. I ordered a seaweed salad, he brought a house salad instead I was not given rice (though the menu states sashimi places come with salad, miso AND rice). When asked about this, he said "oh sashimi plates don't come with rice"... The meal was ok. The cuts were not all tender, some did not bite through well, which greatly can be related to the way the fish was cut. Not thrilled with dessert either. Matcha green tea cheesecake. We've moved to the Central Coast this year and we've been trying to eat at all the local restaurants. In our eating adventures, we've discovered what we consider the best sushi spot. Not that the others were bad, but Umi was not only delicious but the sushi chefs truly know what they are doing. Fish is fresh and in our sashimi platters they really don't skimp out on the fish. They serve you chunks of fish. Which did not disappoint us at all. Their appetizers are just as tasty. My husband is not to fond of miso soup, but he loved theirs. Their service is great, they don't leave you waiting around. The owner was very kind and came out and checked in on us. We appreciated that. We also got the veggie Asian wings were phenomenal!!! Sooo good hands down the best we have tried. Son ordered the California roll can't go wrong with a simple yet delicious roll, he ate it all. Also ordered the Volcano roll, not a repeat, prefer the fresh Salmon over baked flavor. It was preference. Coho roll ok, again preference nothing wrong, just that I wouldn't order again. The quality of the food is good, but the prices have definitely gone up in the years since I first visited. Even in the last six months the price for food has increased up to $2. Ordering food to-go for lunch, it's interesting that there is now an extra charge for extra sauce for a salad where they normally hand you the entire bottle. Sauce containers cost pennies, so I'm not sure why that extra price was added other than for profit, especially since I was not warned of the extra charge when I ordered. It definitely makes me less inclined to visit the restaurant that I used to pretty regularly visit (about twice a month). For half the price, I can get a similar dish at the other competing sushi places around or head to get poke. I still love the food but this has turned from a regular spot to an indulgence once every couple months, if that. read more

Quality and service are always excellent here but make sure you allot enough time as they take great care of making the food so this is not in ideal place for a quick meal. I tried something new this month called the seafood miso soup, or is it miso seafood soup? It was delicious and had shrimp, scallops, mussels, clams and fish. Having dined here twice in the last month, my wife and I experienced both ends of the dining spectrum, both in service and food quality. Our first visit compelled us to speedy return, as the service was very good, as was the food. My wife had a grilled fish dish that was very well prepared, and as always when trying a new (for us) Japanese restaurant, I chose the tempura, as how well the tempura is prepared is the benchmark. Our first time in, we were seated in the main dining area just in front of the sushi bar. The grilled fish was excellent and the tempura was prepared very well, as if someone knew what they were doing, as tempura requires an experienced hand. (BTW, Yes, I have had extensive training in Japanese cuisine under a top-notch Japanese chef). Our second visit was somewhat less that good both in service and in food preparation. Both dishes were way overpriced for what they were (tofu stir fry and pork cutlet). My primary gripe was that the tonkatsu seemed to be of a commercial pre-made frozen cutlet, paper-thin and deep fried like a formula chicken-fried steak in a coffee shop. Not only that, there was no traditional hot mustard anywhere in the house. Definitely NOT $28 worth. And, to boot, we were seated in the 'forgotten corner' of the outer patio and an inattentive trainee was semi-assigned. Once to food was 'dropped off' we were basically forgotten, and I even had to chase down the server to get my card run so we could leave...of course she had forgotten. (Sigh!!) And there weren't that many people there yet. Oh well...no more visits from us. read more

Just an incredibly delicious restaurant with amazing servers and ambiance. The food is amazing, the short ribs are something i dream about now! So juicy and thick and tender. We've never had better tempura. And so many rolls to choose from! Everything has been fantastic. And ask for Maddie, she is so full of light and joy, she makes the experience even greater. We make a point to stop here each year as we visit the Central Coast. Sashimi is amazing and the owner is very talented in her preparation and presentation. They know their fish and offer premium fish choices for your traditional sushi or sashimi. Don't remember if they offer a traditional omakase menu, but the Chef did spend some time to speak w us to share and explain her fish choices for our meal. That was a nice touch. My son loves cut rolls, their rolls are quite generous and you will have allot to choose from. read more
